Starting gold for a level 3rd character

I was wondering what would be the starting gold for a character at lvl 3. The character would start with gold to spend on whatever and then he would choose a magic item equivalent in gold to what someone his level would have. So basically how much spending money should they start with and how what price should there magic item be?

Character wealth by level is listed on page 135 of the DMG. For a 3rd level PC, it's 2700 gp. Half of that would be a reasonable amount for a character's single most expensive item.
