View Full Version : Pathfinder Natural Attacks Question

Hey all! So I'm currently running a character in a campaign whom I've decided to base around the idea that he is a bear, even though he isn't. As such, my current build is a Level 3 Shapeshifter Ranger/3 Beast Totem Barbarian. In doing so, my DM and I have identified a weird rule sticking point between us.

Now, for reference, my stats are as follows*:

Half-Orc Ranger 3 (Shapeshifter Archetype)/3 Barbarian (Beast Totem Archetype)
Str: 21
Dex: 12
Con: 18
Int: 10
Wis: 14
Cha: 8

Alternate Racial Feature - Toothy (Primary Bite Attack - 1d4 damage)

Skills are unimportant to my question, so I'm leaving them out for the time being.

Feats:
1 - Power Attack
2 (Combat Style: Natural Attack) - Aspect of the Beast - Claws of the Beast (2 Primary Claw Attacks - 1d4 damage)
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/aspect-of-the-beast
3 - Improved Bull Rush
5 - Extra Rage

Rage Power - Beast Totem (Lesser) - http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/barbarian/rage-powers/paizo---rage-powers/beast-totem-lesser-su

And, for reference, the Pathfinder SRD rules on natural attacks:
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/universal-monster-rules#TOC-Natural-Attacks

So, assuming I'm not attacking with a weapon, I have a couple questions:
1a. When not raging, how many natural attacks do I have?
1b. What are the attack bonuses on these attacks?
2a. When raging, how many natural attacks do I have?
2b. What are the attack bonuses on these attacks?

According to my DM, I have 3 attacks, 2 claws and a bite regardless of whether I'm raging or not. Because of the wording on Lesser Beast Totem, I believe I actually gain an additional 2 primary claw attacks, kicking me up to 5 attacks at full BAB, 4 claws and a bite. Who is right, my DM or me?

And, just to be clear, this was a totally accidental thing. When building the character, I was just trying to make a guy who thought he was a bear, so this feels somewhat odd.

*Nonstandard Point Buy: All PCs are given a pool of 80 points, no stat before racial modifiers can be above 18 or below 3.

You have 3 natural attacks, all primary, all at your full BAB. You can't use the same body part for two natural attacks. You have two fore paws and that's it. (Rear paws are Rake, I think?)
You gain the morale bonus on all three attacks when you rage

I -think- your claws will do the 1d6 damage of lesser beast totem.

You're right. You'd have 3 attacks while not raging, 5 while raging, and all are primary either way (assuming you don't try and also wield a weapon, which would make them all secondary).

So then I can't argue that I turn my feet into claws? I've always walked around barefoot just because that's how bears do.

Don't see why not. It would be rather odd, because claws on the back feet are usually rakes, but there's nothing to stop you. One ability says you grow claws, doesn't specify where, and the other just gives you claw attacks, without explicitly saying you grow claws. Don't see why you can't grow claws on your feet, then have your fingers harden into claws when you get angry.

Wait, I've had two separate opinions on the matter, one saying that it's 3 attacks while raging, one saying 5. I'm completely confused still!

One attack per limb (http://paizo.com/paizo/faq/v5748nruor1fn#v5748eaic9n88).

Claws go on the Hands (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2l7ns&page=466?Ask-James-Jacobs-ALL-your-Questions-Here#23274), not the feet. (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2oyuu?In-need-of-examples-of-bipedal-creatures-from#8)

You have 3 Natural Attack, regardless of Rage.
