So I'm helping my friends choose items for there characters. The budget is that the magic item must be 500 gold or less. We have a Fighter, Sorcerer, Monk, Rogue and Ranger. They all need a magic item worth the of 500 gold.

For 500gp you are looking at cheap consumables only. most permanent magic items cost at least 1000gp. Unguent of Timelessness, and the various feather tokens are pretty fun to use and have a variety of uses.

If you could convince your friends to have a budget of 750gp, a Belt of Healing is a must have item for anyone for once a day cure moderate wounds. It'll pay for itself inside of a week over buying potions.

All of these are in the Magic Item Compendium and cost 500 GP:

Sorcerer -> Arcanist Gloves
Fighter -> Brute Gauntlets
Ranger -> Chronocharm of the Horizon Walker
Monk -> Talisman of the Disk, Boots of Landing, or Chronocharm of the Fate Weaver
Rogue -> Chronocharm of the Laughing Rogue, Shiftweave, or Troll Gut Rope

Does it have to be a single item worth 500 gp?

The back of the Magic Item Compendium has a list of items by price. Weapon/armor crystals might be nice for melees. Arcanist's/Brute's Gloves are both 500 gp. The chronograms are also nice. Potions might be handy (50 gp for level 1, 300 gp for level 2).

for 500 gp, I would likely go weapon or armor crystal.

if your DM will agree you can get reduced items from the DMG.

if it only works on a specific race or class, and only on someone with ranks in skill "X" then your budget is about 800 ish gold pieces, allowing a healing belt for each of you to use on yourselves.

Bracers of the Inquisition. beat people to heal them just use a bracers or something to reduce the damage they take vs healed, and no, it mist be lethal damage.

Why does it have to be lethal?

Not magic, but you can also go with masterwork weapons or armor. That extra +1 to hit can be handy at very low levels. Look into some optional materials as well maybe.
