So...what exactly is exalted?

Exalted in D&D means super-good, and comes from the Book of Exalted Deeds. Counterpart to Vile from the the Book of Vile Deeds.

Exalted is also an entirely different gaming system published by White Wolf (and then Onyx, but I digress). It is typified by playing virtual demigods that are capable of deeds that make some epic D&D characters seem pretty lame. At higher levels, any character of any build can reform the entire basis of reality, kill legions of gods, and/or save the world from any one of the seven on-going Apocalypses that the game presents as challenges. Good stuff. Narrative-based system, as opposed to D&D's more simulationist system.
