I know this has been discussed before under 3.5 but i've not seen it for pathfinder so I thought I'd pose it.

How would you approach a character in which at every level you must take a different class?
Assume: 20th level, no content restrictions.

For those who want to go into level by level detail on their approach, please feel free to use this as a guideline.

1st party PF only has 29 different base class and unless you go anti-paladin (requires Chaotic Evil), two of these will be incompatible so you have far fewer options. PRCs are an option, but most PF ones are back loaded and or requirement heavy.

The obvious suggestion is that Barbarian be taken at the first level for any build that uses it.

Yeah, I've done this before in 3.5, but it probably doesn't work as well in Pathfinder.

It's a good way to nerf psionics and arcane casting.

Forgive me if I'm missing something, but wouldn't it be a good idea to take a class that grant 8+INT skill points, in order to take full advantage of the 'quadruple skill points at 1st level' rule?

You are:

You are forgiven.

In the middle of something else, but there was an older thread similar to this, and you can fairly easily get 8th (?) level Arcane Casting with 12 levels and no 'shenanigans'.

I'll try to dig it up later.

Pathfinder doesn't have that rule.

You can still get 9th level arcane spells*this way without "shenanigans" but it's still a nerf because you'll have limited spells known and not be a wizard.

Oh. Wow, I wasn't aware Pathfinder had that rule. Okay. It still has the "full Hit Points at 1st level" rule, though? In that case yeah, Barbarian's probably a good idea.

I believe that is an optional house rule, but it is used heavily.

The maximum hit points at 1st level?

Hit Points (hp): Hit points are an abstraction signifying how robust and healthy a creature is at the current moment. To determine a creature’s hit points, roll the dice indicated by its Hit Dice. A creature gains maximum hit points if its first Hit Die roll is for a character class level. Creatures whose first Hit Die comes from an NPC class or from his race roll their first Hit Die normally. Wounds subtract hit points, while healing (both natural and magical) restores hit points. Some abilities and spells grant temporary hit points that disappear after a specific duration. When a creature’s hit points drop below 0, it becomes unconscious. When a creature’s hit points reach a negative total equal to its Constitution score, it dies.

Found it! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?307914-Pathfinder-Build-quot-Dip-Challenge-quot&p=16181445&viewfull=1#post16181445)
Post/thread is from almost exactly a year ago. Neat.

Note: the following avoids all shenanigans, up to and including "Spell-Likes count for early entry". This is why there are 3 "missing" levels.
[copy/paste]

The alignment, as you'll find out, must be Neutral Evil
Classes:
1) Wizard 1, INT based caster, gets Scribe Scroll as a bonus feat.
*1st level spells
2) Rogue OR Vivisectionist Alchemist, for 1d6 Sneak Attack
3) ?
4) ?
5) ?
6) Cyphermage, +1 Caster
7) Diabolist, +1 Caster, 'early' entry through use of UMDing the required spell (must be Lawful Evil, or within 1-step of)
*2nd level spells
8) Sleepless Detective, fairly easy reqs, nets another 1d6 Sneak Attack
9) Arcane Trickster +1 Caster, required 2d6 Sneak to enter (Trickster cannot be Lawful, combined with Diabolist, this leaves Neutral Evil,)
10) Veiled Illusionist, +1 Caster, requires Spell Focus (Illusion)
*3rd level spells
11 & 12) at this point we can easily qualify for any of the following: Bloatmage, Genie Binder (12th level only) Harrower, and/or Loremaster
* Caster level 7, with 4th level spells

Required Feats:
Scribe Scroll, freebie from Wizard
Cypher Magic, anytime before level 6
Spell Focus (Illusion), anytime before level 10
[various], whatever is required by your last 2 classes.

Going by level 11/12 we can easily get to level 14 with a caster level of 9 if we take all listed PrC's.
A few more PrC's have been published since last year, and a few have been left out of being listed above.
Thuvian (Natural) Alchemist (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/n-r/natural-alchemist) is good for a level

Other classes that potentially help, most of these fail due to Alignment restrictions.
Arclord of Nex (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/a-b/mage-of-the-third-eye): Should work, level 15, caster level 10
Envoy of Balance (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/e-h/envoy-of-balance) Must be Neutral (we are NOT divine, thus we can ignore the special deity restriction)
Hellknight Signifier (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/e-h/hellknight-signifer) Must be Lawful
Magaambyan Arcanist (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/c-d/magaambyan-arcanist) Must be Good
Spherewalker (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/s-z/spherewalker) Must worship Desna (CG, note, you don't need to be within 1 step to worship a deity, and the PrC does not otherwise have an alignment restriction)
Soul Warden (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/s-z/soul-warden) Must be Non-Evil

If we replace Diabolist with Thuvian Alchemist, then we don't need to be within 1 of LE. Our alignment will be TN.
So add in Arclord of Nex (level 15), Envoy of Balance (level 16), Spherewalker (17) and Soul Warden (18).
Finally, Field Agent (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/e-h/field-agent) allows a 1-time "+1 any casting".

19 levels, caster level 14, 7th level arcane spells.
Not too bad for an all dip-build.

EDIT: Genie Binder and Magaambyan are incompatible. One must be Good, the other must be Non-Good.

Huh, I rather like that approach.

Now what other than spellcasting can we focus on?
