Oliana

Oliana grumbles as the pine needles prick her skin, and she then follows after Nalik, rather slowly.

Yelping at the barrage of needles, Deladus scoots as fast as he can after the rest of the group. Seeing Oliana fall behind a bit, he sticks with her, standing as best he can between her and the majority of the barrage.

Hertz

Nalik's order to run reaches Hertz only as a very distant voice, mumbling incoherent words. He does take a step forward, but that is all his body manages before finally giving in under the sonic blasts, tiny arrows and darts. With a weak groan, he collapses mistep.

Nalik

Naliks flight is not so blind as to miss Oliana and Hertz collapsing behind him. Trusting his armor to protect him, he drops back to the closer of the fallen comrades and offers up a prayer for Thors blessing on them. Once done, he will assist them in arising, and give them a push towards the apparent gap in the voices.

Dazed and confused, Hertz was more than glad to have Nalik's help. He followed his other fleeing companions, knowing perfectly it wouldn't take long before his lungs started aching again.

Once everyone actually gets moving, the needles stop. In the chaos, Ziran ends up in the lead, rushing through the part of the forest that seems less dangerous. The perception of that possibly changes as soon as he trips over something that he doesn't see, landing face first in a pile of thick, sticky mud. Right behind him, Hertz is able to stop himself from landing any more than a single foot int he muck that he can quickly pull back out. The foot part of his boot is slathered in goopy mud that clings stubbornly and feels very heavy.

Those behind Hertz can easily stop before they get to it, and go around it without too much issue. Ziran is stuck in the muck, 5 feet away from one edge, and is sinking. The mud puddle is roughly a square of 20 feet per side. The voices seem to have quieted, though it sounds like there is wind through the trees, or maybe a lot of whispering.

The third person who probably needed healing the most was Ziran, as a low hit-pointed spellcaster.

Muttering a curse, Hertz turns around to his remaining comrades. "Anyone has rope?" he asks gruffly, his tone clearly showing his growing irritation with this forest.

Oliana

Oliana grumbles a curse under her breath; anyone who understands orcish hears something about "cursed to hades forest ate my rope."

Oliana then shouts, "If you don't give me my rope back, NOW, I'm going to start taking out trees!!!!" Oliana reaches into her backpack and pulls out a couple small vials.

Deladus blinks in surprise at Oliana. Recovering quickly, he reaches into his bag and pulls out a length of rope to hand to Hertz.

"Keep hold of one end. You're stronger than I am." Hertz states as he curls up the other end in a easy-to-trow ball. For a moment he was tempted to tie the rope to Sin, using him a weight that'd make the throwing arc more regular, but he quickly dismissed the idea. Somehow, he doubted Sin would be very eager to make such an experiment.

With a slight smile, he threw the rope Ziran's way, calling out to the gnome "Catch and hold tight! We'll try and pull you out of there."

As for pulling Ziran out, I'd have Deladus do the main Strenght check and the rest of us providing Aid Another. If that's alright with everyone, here's my (probably lousy) strength check: [roll1]

The rope toss is perfectly placed, but Ziran's hands are already covered with the muck, and he is sinking fast. From the movements of his body, he is flailing around. From the look in his eyes, he is starting to panic. A stream of gnomish cursewords comes out of his mouth as Deladus expertly yanks the rope right out of his hands.

Before anyone has a chance to do more than realize that the gnome is not attached to the end of the rope anymore, he slips under the surface. Clearly, trying to go in after him would be suicide.

At the rate things are going, Hertz is wondering if suicide would not only be accelerating the current processus. He stares at the muck for a long, blank moment before handing part of the rope to Sin. "Can you tie this to the other side?"

Nalik

Ziran no!
Too late to come to any aid, Nalik watches with horror as another comrade succumbs to an untimely death.

Damn you! What have we done to you. We entered these woods by accident. You have trapped us, attacked us in many ways, taken and killed our comrades. At least you can show your coward faces.

Nalik falls to his knees at the edge of the mud.

Gaping wide-eyed in frustration, Sin watches as Ziran is allowed to sink out of sight. "Get him out! Someone get him out of there!" he yells pointlessly, entirely missing Hertz' absurd request that he tie the rope to anything.

Sin suddenly felt empty. Perhaps it was the loss of one of the little gnomes he felt a bit more comfortable with than the bigger folk, or perhaps he'd just pooped himself lighter while fleeing. This form still had a few peculiarities Sin hadn't become accustomed to; or had learned to ignore.

"Tick, tock, Drip DROP; another day, another dead. They're even burying themselves now! First Orcs, then orcs again, then rats, then a traitor, some more orcs, undead crawly things and flying impish things, now invisible crap that only cares to kill us all."

"All I wanted to do was see the world! Now my friends are dead; a friend to nature, slaughtered by a traitor, and now nature seems to protect his killer. So, there, nature! All you do is destroy those that would protect you; but now you have a new enemy. Me."

Oliana punctuates her final word with tossing a bottle of alchemist's fire at a near-by tree.

The flask smashes into the tree and bursts into flames that stick to the bark. After about three seconds, the trunk flares and sends out a wave of warmth. The effect is similar to that of a huge piece of flash paper. There is a *whumpf* noise, and the tree is just gone, leaving a bare patch of scorched ground and a fine mist of glowing ash that slowly begins to settle out of the air.

"Indeed. Perhaps even entirely in our mind." Hertz stated. "Nothing about this forest makes sense. We're lost. Hengist, Sarrock and Carter are even more lost, at least to us. And Ziran..." Hertz sighed, leaving his sentence unfinished. "It's been quite proven that leaving the trees alone doesn't get us any respite. Perhaps we should hack more of them down, and see if they all disappear the same way."

Sin's eyestalks wiggle for a moment, and he suddenly seems less distraught at the gnome's mud-swimming feat, and far more engaged regarding the peculiarity of the tree.

With a rather impish grin of his own, he encourages Hertz' lead, "Yes, let's. Even one good torch should make for a fine show."

Oliana

Oliana looks down at the flasks in her hands and her anger subsides a bit. Shrugging, she puts the flasks back in her back and pulls out a torch and her flint and steel. She hands the torch to Hertz requesting, "Hold this," and she proceeds to strike the flint and steel aiming sparks at the end of the torch, and not Hertz.

Once the torch is lit, she lifts the torch out of Hertz's hands gently, "Thank you." Oliana then walks to the nearest tree to see if it goes up too.

As Oliana walked off with the torch, Hertz was reminded of Ulrich, who'd been somewhat obsessed with fire itself. It seemed that lack of other spellcaster and the forest's continuous attacks had made a good job pushing her that way too. At least she's not doing this with some kind of demented glee.

The second tree goes up just as the first one did. The fine, glowing mist of ash hangs in the air briefly before slowly settling out.

Where the ash from the first tree is just now reaching the ground, tiny flares of green light blossom and fade.

Hertz

Hertz stares at the pale green lights and the ashes for a moment, before putting forward an idea in a slow, thoughtful voice. "It seems we can 'burn' the trees without any damage to ourselves - at least from fire, and for now. We should consider making our own way out of the forest, rather than following already-created paths." He glanced backward, wondering for a moment exactly where the three others were. "Staying in the forest to look for others will most likely be fruitless. The chances they'll try to exit it by themselves are greater than the chances they try and find us."

After another pause, he added more to himself than anyone else "I wonder if the tree'll grow up again. Or if the next one will be a solid and real one."

Lets start burning the trees, one at a time. I tried to be reasonable will whatever was keeping us here. If they do not want to be reasonable, we will burn our way out.

The third tree does exactly the same as the first two. The fourth tree, though, does not vaporize. Where the flames touch it, the bark starts to writhe, then a twig sprouts and grows, as if one was able to make time move many times faster than normal. For as long as the torch is left there, it grows and grows this new branch.

The next tree selected for fire exposure also starts to grow at an accelerated rate. The little green flashes of light from the first tree seem to be giving way to the accelerated growth of tiny new shoot. There are little green flashes of light now from the settling ashen mist of the second and third tree, as wall.

"That's... fascinating." Hertz crouched next to new sprout, observing it grow. He snaps out of it after a moment, realising that if they continued 'burning' trees, they'd be stuck in them. "Nalik, we should stop this. We're strengthening them."

Not good... or perhaps it is. Hertz frowns, bending over to pick the hammer. He'd barely held back a gasp when Nalik had disappeared, but now that the initial surprise had passed, he was considering the implications of Nalik's disappearance. "Oliana... have you ever seen something like this? In your opinion, if we hit the tree like Nalik... would we end up at the same place than him?"

oliana0

Oliana

Oliana stares blankly at the place Nalik once was. When Hertz speaks she snaps out of it and goes into wizard mode.

"Okay, Disintegration. But all his armor and whatnot would still be here. Probably not that. Uhhhh, teleport trap or spell? But his weapon should have gone with him for that; unless the impact loosened the grip enough that he wasn't holding it, technically? Invisibility? Combined with phase-shifting? Or, it's all a hallucination or we are dreaming."

"Wait, those arrows we were hit with. Did we check them for poison or other substances? But I'm not normally suseptable to sleep spells."

If one can use a pearl of power (level 1) to re-cast a level 0 spell, I'd like to cast detect magic on the area, and use that to narrow things down. Including looking at the arrows we were shot with.

"Calm down, Oliana. I don't think this is a dream - much worse, if you ask me." He looked around, frowning. "This could be hallucination, but the way everyone disappeared simply seems weird." Whirling the hammer in his hand for a moment, he finally made up his decision. "Wish me luck." he said, before smashing the tree with Nalik's hammer, a few feet above where the dwarf had hit.

Having never dealt with attacking trees before, Hertz promptly backpedals, getting out of branches' reach. At least from that tree... Hoping he had only animated by Nalik's previous attack, he kept a wary eye on the tree behind him. "What do we do now? If the entire forest comes alive, we're dead - I certainly can't take down a tree with my fists. Even if it doesn't, we've lost Nalik - he's probably with the others or something. Any of you has some original idea about how we're going to join them?"

Personal frustration was quickly taking over, and the fact he let it have an influence on his actions served only to make Hertz even more frustrated. They needed a solution, and the sooner the better.

The tree stops rather suddenly. A woman with golden hair steps into view from behind the tree, or perhaps she stepped out of the tree. She wears a gown of dark green with lighter green highlights. She has emerald green eyes and her feet cannot be seen under the skirts. The dress is made of some kind of fine, delicate fabric probably best suited to the pampered lifestyle of idle royalty. Aside from all of that, she is a beautiful woman. Her race is difficult to place. She might be human, but she may also have elven blood.

"What makes you think that there is any kind of choice here?" The woman doesn't seem to do anything, but some kind of shockwave rips through the air. The trees and undergrowth seem unaffected, but Oliana and Hertz are knocked down. They fall for a very long time. Everything goes completely golden for what seems like an eternity.

Sarrok...

As he emerges from the cave and begins to move forward, Sarrok stumbles on some loose stones. Falling face first, he seems to fall for a much longer time than just reaching the ground should take. There is a shimmer of gold across his vision, then he sprawls in a strange, yet familiar place. Strange because it is undoubtedly quite unexpected. Familiar because he has been here before. The stone floor under his body is that of the Citadel in Highgate. This room is empty, but only briefly.

Plus Carter and Hengist...

Carter and Hengist each coalesce out of a golden mist, lying peacefully on the floor as if sleeping. They lie a few feet from each other, with all their gear stacked neatly next to them, and waken a few feet from Sarrok. All three men recognize the place as one of the training rooms. One wall is covered with a floor to ceiling mirror. Each can recall being in this room, or one just like it for at least a few weaponswork sessions. It is otherwise empty, but only briefly.

Add a dash of Oliana and Hertz

The world resolves back from the gold and both land on their posteriors inside this training room, across from the others. Sarrok, Carter, Hengist, Oliana, and Hertz are now together here.

Hengist

Sitting up on the floor, Hengist groans, running his now green-tinged hands over his face. By Odin's beard... What a strange dream... Hengist blinks for a moment, realizes that he's not in the forest, and jumps to his feat, tripping over his own assembled belongings.

"Ngh." Hertz' first movement is to groan, then to sit up. His body hurt in many places, glancing pains from the nuts and sonic booms, wild runs and zombie bites. But more importantly, however, he felt like he was going to be sick. There should have been a choice - this was simply disgusting. True, death and life could not exist without one another, but this was a wicked way to show it. Surely Nalik hadn't really done that...

Glancing around, he realised his missing companions were also present. He didn't know whether or not he should be glad for that - it was indication enough that Nalik had, in fact, done something so stupid. Yet at least the others did live. Safe for Ziran... and Sin? "Is everyone... alright?"

Orcish guttural sounds come from the small half-elf, partly from pain and partly from frustration. She rolls over and stands up very grumpy.

"That B*#&$. Where's Nalik? Where's Deladus? And the floaty guy? I should go back there and burn her whole forest down for this. Completely uncalled for."

Oliana brushes off her clothes and rummages through her belongings to make sure nothing is missing.

“For some reason I don’t think this is real.” Sarrok said staring up at the ceiling. “Wait you two have been sleeping! I have been risking my life to find you Cater and you were just peacefully sleeping?” He lets out what could be considered a laugh and then bites his lip. Well… For what I gathered from a rather hungry dragon the enemy we face are nymphs. He also mentioned something about speaking trees. Hmmmm. From what he said it sounds like the world we are in is some how detached from the world we are from, and that this world is difficult to escape from. However he did not know how to get out anyway.” He stops. “Being a city gnome I do not know much about wilderness, perhaps Ziran woud have some knowledge. Hertz watched Oliana go for a moment, figuring he would need to restrain her impulses at some point. Hearing Sarrock's complicated and strange tale, he brought back his attention to the group. He didn't like the green tinge in the least, but everything in its right time.

"Woah, slow down, slow down. We seem to have lost Deladus and Sin, yes, and I can't explain why. They were with us when we were transported here. Ziran... I expected him to be with you. He sank in shifting sands..." He couldn't bring himself to explain Nalik just yet, so he left it to the others to bring their tales. "Hengist, Carter... what happened to your skin?"

Shrugging into his chain shirt, Hengist responds to the wizened old man. I, and apparently friend Carter, are among the favoured of men. We have been honoured by the children of Baldur, and now, it would seem, carry his mark and his blessing. Even now, I can feel his divine strength flowing through me. Where you, yourselves not welcomed by the children of the wood?

Clearly, he is quite pleased by what he views as an elevation in status, and begins reassembling his gear, stopping short when he hears Carter talk of a dragon. Dragon? You mean a wyrm? one of the loathsome childer of Loki?

The only living being to address us was this woman - who was remarkably similar to Sif - but she wasn't very conversational. She announced Nalik was giving up his life for ours, snickered at our question and then we were here..." He seems overly discouraged by how things went, and the utter lack of answers to his many, many questions.

"It's a relief to know you're not plagued by some strange sickness." He moves to shake Deladus awake, figuring it'd be better if everyone participated to the 'meeting'. "As for Nalik... Though I loathe the idea, I am tempted to believe that woman's tale. Sif is Thor's wife, and may very well have been sent as a messenger. For a messenger, her message was quite incomplete. We don't even know what the hell the danger was."

The door opens without difficulty. Outside it is a hallway that certainly looks like the Citadel. It is quiet, but not silent. The sounds of boots on stone can be heard, and of distant voices speaking normally. The air holds a hint of boot polish on it, but the overriding smell is that of the cleanser soldiers and recruits are forced to clean the floors and walls with as punishment for assorted infractions. It is a pleasant pine-y scent, though Carter and Sarrok can attest to the fact that it smells disgusting when you're actually doing the cleaning.

There is another door across from this one. The hallway extends in both directions with more doors. There are clearly branches off this hallway, and to the left, it ends with a large metal door.

As the group walks, a door on one side of the hallway opens, and several young men (humans, halflings, and dwarves) pour out, all dressed in uniforms of Highgate units, though they are not all the same. They each have a small booklet that looks fairly thin. It is possible to glean the title of the booklet, which is printed in large block letters on the covers: Uniform and Rank Handbook. There is also a uniformed elf that walks out without a handbook.

The 16 of them all stop to stare a little. The elf lifts an eyebrow and seems to be the only one actually evaluating the situation. "If you have a reason for being here, now is the time to spit it out." His voice is a little harsh, and he sounds really quite skeptical.

Carter, Sarrok, Hengist: The uniforms and rank insignias mark these young men as recruits in three different corps: archery, infantry, and secretarial. You also know that at this stage of training, recruits are typically separated by gender, but not race.
The elf is Sergeant Lysaen, and he trained all three of you in this very subject, as well as a few others. He is technically in the infantry. He would be remembered as fair, honest, and demanding.

Carter steps forward from the back, lowering his weapon. Once in the front, he turns to the side to show off his armband too. "We are the Defenders of Highgate. Our situation is complicated and it would not be wise to discuss it with random people we meet in the hallway."

Carter looks back the group and then turns back to the elf and says, "Suffice it to say, we don't intend to be here any longer than we have to. If you would please direct us to the High Lord or the Base Commander, we would be in your debt and on our way."

Wanted to ask for someone we know and have dealt with in the past but all of the citadel posts I found, no one had a name. Just men in plate armor. *sigh*

The elf gives the whole group a highly skeptical once over, but then he points to the metal door. "Fastest way. That'll put you out by the stables."

Through the metal door is, indeed, the stables, and the arena used for mounted training. It is outdoors, and the position of the sun suggests that the time is about noon. Once there, Carter, Sarrok, and Hengist can easily orient themselves. The Base Commander's office, about a fifteen minute brisk walk across the place, has a lobby sort of area with a small, uncomfortable looking bench and a desk. Behind the desk, there is a woman scribbling on some paper. She is human, and looks incredibly old, like she probably should have retired 30 years ago, maybe more.

She looks up as everyone walks into the area and blinks a couple of times. "Can I help you?" Despite her apparent age, her voice is crisp and clear.

Sarrok steps up and stands at ease “To be frank, madam, I am not sure that you can. My companions and I are the remnants of the Defenders of the Highgate. This may sound far fetched however please hear us out. Me and the other Defenders were transported into a forest, which I believe may exist on another plan of existence, after passing through the mountains to the north. After we were assaulted by what appeared to be nymphs(or perhaps even living trees) are party became separated for a period of time. However it appears we, meaning us standing here, suddenly teleported here leaving both our leader Nalik and one of our wizards Ziran behind. It really makes no since to me, in fact even now I am contemplating that you do not even exist and this all a figment of my imagination .” He ends with a shrug and looks to the others to see if any of others have anything to add. The ancient woman looks taken quite aback by what is said and stands up. "Oh my. I'll see if the Commander is available for you boys. And young lady. Just a minute." She opens the door that her desk is positioned to sit as a sentinel over and disappears inside the room, closing it behind herself.

The wait is short, and the door opens again. The woman steps back out and leaves the door open as she moves back to her desk. "He'll see you right away. Please close the door behind yourselves."

The Commander's office is incredibly clean and neat, with everything in its place and nothing ornamental. He is sitting behind his desk, a sturdy affair of plain wood. The man himself looks like he was probably a mighty warrior in his prime, but that time is long past. From what can be seen of him, he is still in decent shape, but his short hair and close cropped beard are gray and his shoulders droop a little, and there is a hint of what is probably a slight paunch. There are neat piles of papers and folders on his desk, one of which he is just closing and setting on top of a pile.

he scans the entire group, then in a gruff and grizzled voice, probably made harsh by years of shouting, he barks, "I don't see the Corporal, so someone step up and report."

Hengist

Growing short of temper, the Norseman pipes up. Noble Stallari, a great calamity has befallen your huskarl, Nalik the Dwarf. He has, it would seem, pledged his life to dark and unseen forces in exchange for that of myself and these other lithsmen in your service. It was in the enchanted grove of the Children of Baldur that he was lost, along the path we were set to survey while in pursuit of a vile traitor of your holdings. These others might speak more on that, for I know little of it, save that, if Nalik has pledged his life in exchange for my own, then weregeld is owed, and I must be returned to pay my honour-debt.

Moments later... we were here, together."

As the team moves off from the commander, Carter exhales and takes a couple deep breaths. Carter relaxes a bit and begins to walk towards the barracks, where he assumes they'll be staying. "Inside the citidel? We are back in Highgate and not even able to see our families."

Carter sighs and his shoulder slump a bit as he shuffles off towards the barracks.

The debriefing takes a couple of hours in total, as each person is interviewed separately by three officers, and only two at any one time. They ask a lot of questions and generally seem dissatisfied by the reports from everyone. Anyone who needs to requisition supplies can take care of that after their debriefing.

Quarters are assigned, with everyone put into two person rooms. Oliana has one to herself for this night. The beds aren't exactly luxurious, but they are more comfortable than the ground and have a roof, and if anyone is able to get this far into the Citadel to attack, they probably won't be going after Defender.

In the morning, the barracks mess, a huge room that could easily seat two hundred at the long tables, is open and available to everyone. The food is served buffet-style, and is fairly simple: scrambled eggs, sausage links, whole apples and oranges, fried potato wedges. Orange juice, water, coffee, tea, and milk are all available to drink. At dawn, the mess is full of people, all of whom are wearing uniforms, about half of actual soldiers and half of cadets. No officers are present. The soldiers and cadets are mostly human, but a fair number of all the other races are present.

Oliana

Oliana answers any questions grumpily and tries to ask questions of her own including questions to determine how long they'd been gone, what kind of activity had the town seen from the area they'd been stationed, would she be able to see her family before she was reassigned. She offered the notes that she had been taking during their ordeal hoping to get them back.

She still had the letter that Elis had given her to introduce her to his family. She would like to find his family and talk with them.

Once in her room she had time to think about what had happened. The wounds she had from the fight before had not completely healed. Her once long hair which had been a badge of pride for her--burners did not keep long hair for long--was now blotchy and missing in places. She thought of what this must look like and she sadly took her handy knife and began to saw away at her hair, cropping it short, keeping one long piece on the back of her head, behind her right ear. She slowly braided the piece and tied the end off.

She then tended to her own wounds and lied down to rest noticing how quiet the room was compared to the camps that she had gotten used to. Nalik's gentle snoring, the snarking comments about the day's exploits, the wind, the birds, the everything gone. She drifted off to sleep alone and miserable.

The next morning she wakes early and feeling a bit better she quickly prepares herself and hurries to the mess for breakfast, and her companions.

Hertz

Much like Oliana, Hertz's answers were short and nearly always followed by a question of his own. Not that he expected any results, since his questions revolved more around the strange forest, the mysterious woman and if they had heard of anything similar. That, and the pressing need for a competent cleric who would tend to the team.

When back in his room, he paced around for a while, pondering what had happened. Much of his diary got filled with random thoughts, wonders, a few answers, questions, questions and more questions. It seemed to Hertz that the more they lived together, the more confusing things got for the small squad.

Sighing, he eventually leaned back slightly on his side and attempted to get some sleep. He drifted in and out, unable to completely put out Nalik out of his mind. At least he wasn't disturbed by silence like Oliana -- he'd learned to ignore it easily in the monastery.

I am going to assume that everyone makes their way to the mess hall, and is generally together.
A silver haired dwarf exits the commanders office and makes his way to the barracks where the Defenders are said to be staying. He is wearing banded armor that appears to be as silver as his hair. He is prominently marked as a child of Thor, with Hammers emblazoned on his clothing, as well as incorporated into his shield. At his side he carries a quite odd looking hammer which appears to be the embodiment of a storm. On his right arm, he wears the armband of the Defenders, on his shoulder is an owl. He is also carrying a rope.

Although his silver haired would imply great age, his unlined face and spritely step give it the lie. At the moment, the storm that is in his hammer is reflected on his face. This dwarf is not happy about something.

Finding the barracks empty, the dwarf judges the time of day, and determines that the Defenders would most likely be in the mess hall. Spotting the group a bit separated from the rest of the soldiers. His face softens as he makes his way to them. He is only a bit surprised by the green tint to some oh their skin. He first walks up to Oliana and holds out the rope, then Naliks voice comes out of his mouth. Sif said that you might be wanting this. Responding to the questions both spoken and on the team members faces. There will be time to catch up later. This is not the time or place where we should do that. It is very good to see you all.

After everyone has finished eating. He will suggest that they head back the the barracks to catch up on what has happened to each member. He will bring a pitcher of water and cups with him. Probably Oliana's room, have you ever noticed that the girls usually get the bigger rooms? I am sure the guys have.

Now we can all report on what has happened to us while we were parted. I will start.

The moment that I hit that tree, I found myself alone in a room. A moment later a lovely woman who I later found to be Sif appeared. We spoke for a while and had tea. He pauses a moment as if considering what to say next. She assured me of your safety, and then gave me some information. Some of it is helpful, some is just disturbing. Looks at Oliana with sorrow on his face, Elis was turned through necromancy. We will no longer pursue him, but if we run into him again, we will treat him as if he is any other enemy. The other part is that Astryn is not the true leader of the threat to Highgate.
Pauses again and pours himself a drink of water, allowing the team to absorb the information that he just gave them.
If it ended there this would be a wondrous story, but it goes on. I don't know if there was something in the tea, but shortly after Sif left I found myself drifting off to sleep. In this dream I came to be equipped how you see me now.,
A dreamy look comes into his eyes,
I was shown the way to an Oracle who granted me the answer to a question. The question that I asked was "What do I need to do to uphold my duty to the city of Highgate by identifying and protecting them from the current and upcoming dangers."
Another drink of water.
I am not sure I completely understand the extent of the answers.
"Use the route that Highgate blocks to reach the orcs. Do not be distracted by the traitor, by the bard, or by your orders. Take no prisoners, let none escape.
Find Hergilash and Brosskidil and kill them. Once they are dead, convince the kobolds to join your cause.
Attack the gnolls indirectly, using guerrilla tactics. You need only reduce their numbers.
You will have to face Graxidezil before she reaches Highgate. If she reaches the city, it will fall."

drink
I do not know these names, or anything about gnolls or kobolds in the area. I intend to learn of them before we leave.

That ends my story, I see that there are some changes in some of you. Tell me what has happened.

After a moment he blushes and then stammers out, "I don't think I told her any useful military information, nor did she really ask, but I think that is where I picked up whatever disease I have now." Having decided upon a course of action not entirely under his control, as shown by his slightly darkening green skin and change of attitude, he ventures to the outfitters and begins requesting new arms and equipment.

Carter actually smiles when offered 3 hours in the city. He quickly gathers his stuff and heads out. Carter heads straight across town towards his father's house, hopeful he will catch him before work.

After spending time with Dad, Carter escorts Dad to work and then spends an hour or so wandering the city, trying to get a feel for what has been going on. When his deadline approachs, Carter heads back to the meeting place, arriving about 5 minutes early.

Carter sits down on the floor, closes his eyes and leans against the wall, tuning his senses and pondering this assignment and its future.

He will then return to Oliana's room to plan the groups next step. According to he Oracle, we need to follow he pass to the north to head off the pending invasion. I was hoping to find a way through the wall in my research, but I found nothing.

Carter prepares himself to head out through the tunnel and back to base camp when he realized that Nalik said no such thing. Carter does a double take when Nalik suggests that he accompany Sarrok on the mission. Carter almost goes along with it, but then speaks up, "Sir, I don't mean to question your orders, but my presence on this mission will cause Sarrok hardship. I am sorry to have not fully filled you in on my background, but before I joined the Defenders, I ran a business selling and installing traps into homes and businesses. Before that I worked with militia and constabulary defending the citizens and arresting criminals. So.. you can see, the very people that you wish Sarrok to talk to may very well hold a grudge against me and therefore not be willing to talk with Sarrok, or worse, they may attack us both."

Carter looks to Deladus and says, "I am willing to serve, but I thought you should have all the information before you choose whom to send as Sarrok's backup."

Carter steps back and if Nalik does not alter his orders, he moves over to Sarrok and prepare.

Sarrok and Deladus make their way through the city to Full Belly Tavern, the kind of place where the only thing innocent going on is the name. It smells like beer and fish with a light aroma of smoke on top. The fish smell is obviously not from anything cooking, but rather from the oil lamps that barely light the place up. There is a bar along one wall with a door that probably goes to a storeroom behind it. There are 15 small round tables scattered across the room and several explicit pieces of 'artwork' hanging on the walls. There are no windows.

The barkeep, a grizzled old dwarf by the name of Bruck, is the same as he ever was, his long beard gone gray many years ago, his leather apron stained in a few spots with something dark, and his hands just as quick as ever. The wenches, of which there are four at the moment (two human, one halfling, one dwarf), are all wearing dresses of a style that makes it perfectly clear they sell more than just drinks. They may well be the reason the place is so poorly lit, as they are not precisely high class.

There are ten patrons inside at the moment. Four are human (one has a wench sitting on his lap), two are gnome, and one is a dwarf, and the other three are halfling. Sarrok doesn't recognize any of them aside from the barkeep, and Deladus has never seen any of these people before.

Carter looks at Nalik with an expression of disbelief, then says, "Oh, come on. It would tower over the city if were that tall. We could see it from anywhere in the city and probably for miles around. It'd have to be several hundred feet thick to stay up. That just seems insane."

Carter turns and gestures towards where the city would be, had they all been outside, and then says, "Besides, how would a wall that tall help the city? Once it gets over a hundred feet or so, nothing will try to climb it. Right, there just isn't any additional benefit in having a 700' wall over having a 200' wall."

Carter looks back to the mages and queries again, "Even if it was that tall, can we simply fly over, given time to prepare the magic? We could even purchase a scroll if that would help."

Carter grasps his head for a moment and then says, "The wall is just the back wall of this citadel, extra tall and reinforced. There are archers manning the top of the wall, so there is a way up. There is no trick to it, other than maybe getting back in, but I'm sure if you put in an official request, we can work something out."

Response to the query regarding a 'standard mode of transportation from the south side to the north side of the wall': "There is no such thing. We do not send troops that way. Ever."

Permission for the unit to get up on the top of the wall is given.

Accessing the guards' walk at the top of the wall involves traipsing through the Citadel and climbing stairs. A lot of stairs. First the troop gets to the roof of the building, where everyone has to walk across in plain view to the back wall that rises 30 feet higher from there. The top is crenelated on both the inside and outside, and the heads of people can be seen up there in pairs, moving back and forth.

The stairs from the roof to the top of the wall are covered and the steps themselves have a curious texture to them. They seem to have raised portions, like a tread that would probably cut the bottom of a bare foot.

The team gets challenged on the way at every landing inside the building, at the base of the stairs at the wall, and again at the top of the wall. Each person is easily satisfied by a name, rank, and displayed armband, but they all insist upon getting that.

At the top of the wall, the floor that the people are walking on is set low from the crenelations such that one must be at least 65 inches tall to see over the top of the wall at the lower parts. For those who can see, the vista is breathtaking. The huge gap in the mountains is barren for about 100 feet, then the forest begins. The shimmer of a few lakes can be seen here and there, and more mountains rise up, far off in the distance. There are some cleared areas with rivers cutting across them like shining ribbons.

It seems impossible that orcs and gnolls and kobolds rule over those lands, as they look pristine from here.

But even better, there are guard here who might welcome a break from the walking back and forth to help lower us down to the far side. Right? There must be half a dozen men here, I'd think they could easily lower us down. Once we are down, they pull the rope back up and wait for our signal, at which point they reel us in."

About 9am

The group, gathered together once again, stands at the bottom of the wall. The rope snakes its way back up the wall as, presumably, the guards (who were nice enough to take care of the other end while everyone climbed down) pull it back up. The land before the team is barren, dusty rock for only about 100 feet, then a scraggly sort of forest starts. Really, once you reach the leading edge of it, which is an uneven line, there are short grasses, then progressively taller ones augmented by shrubs and some young trees.

By the time the area with actual growth is reached, the passage has widened some, to be far enough between the sharp slopes reaching for the sky that mere mortal brains cannot hope to guestimate how far apart they are without expensive surveying equipment.

Carter, no doubt at the rear of the group as it makes it way along the narrow passage in between the trees, turns and salutes the guardsmen along the top of the wall.

Glad they didn't drop me. Here we go again. At least this time we don't have an horses with us. Foul beasts.

He examines the area around him and his companions, looking for signs of threat, deadfalls, snares, and other forms of tomfoolery. He also keeps his eyes open for signs of edible plantlife, wildlife, and appropriate seasonings to supplement his stores.

Forest of Orcishness
about 4pm

The pace Hengist sets is an easy one, a mere stroll. The terrain changes from overgrown weeds to young trees to a more established forest. The fauna is somewhat scarce, but there are plenty of plants for Hengist to strip of berries and nuts as he moves through the trees. The sun tracks across the sky as the way is made through the forest, and it isn't until late in the afternoon that Hengist has cause to stop and examine tracks that belong to something other than squirrels and rabbits and move diagonally from southeast to northwest. Unfortunately, the tracks are the least of his concerns.

Orc. There is what looks like a squad of orcs moving northwest, not far ahead of you. They are armed with falchions that are not readied at this point. The one in the rear grunts something and they all turn before anyone has a chance to react.

Both groups spring into action, beginning a charge at each other. Weapons are drawn, teeth are bared, snarls are issued. There is a massive collision between Hengist and four different orcs. The first one just smashes into the hulking brute of a man, knocking aside his weapon with ease and hitting him high. Hengist falls to the ground, landing deftly on his backside just as the other three orcs bear down on him, weapons pointed forward. He is hacked to ribbons by orcs with feral grins of glee.

Hertz finds himself under assault, as well, with a group of orcs broken off to target him. The first one to reach him whips his large blade around with what looks like actual skill and slashes across Hertz' torso. The others are not far behind, pounding the ground with blades held aloft and menace in their eyes.

Hertz finds that one of his blows actually connects for once, thumping solidly into orcflesh. As Carter tries to nimbly somersault into position, the orc's blade hacks a line of pain down his leg. But Carter lashes out against the orc, thumping his flail soundly into orc's chest. His blow is so powerful, it carries the flail straight through to the next orc, smashing into its arm. The second orc howls with pain and rage.

Hengist grips his spear and all but surrenders as Nalik's dwarven legs carry him to the big man's side. He holds up his hammer in a warding gesture and a lightning bolt crackles through the air, slamming into the chest of the orc in front of him.

Oliana takes a few steps forward and tosses a small bead out into the trees. It impacts off away from the fight, but blossoms into a glorious ball of flame. Orcish squeals of angry pain come from within it, though one of them seems to have ducked just enough to avoid some of the blast. The flames dissipate as quickly as they appeared, leaving smoldering trees and burning underbrush.

Sarrok moves in and shoots his crossbow, sending it through the throat of the orc in front of Carter, finishing the job for him. Deladus takes a few steps back, uncertain how to approach the situation.

Three of the orcs turn and run for it, heading to the west. The other four remaining orcs turn to face the new threat and move to surround Nalik. The combined flurry of blades only scrapes up the dwarf, but in several spots.

Hertz, unable to see the orcs fleeing through the woods, moves in to help with those staying behind to fight. He jabs one in the arm, making it grunt. Carter bobs and weaves to avoid a swinging falchion, then smashes the head of his flail into that arm, shattering it. A deft flick of his wrist harnesses the momentum of the spiked head, sending it straight into the face of another orc.

Hengist shoves his spear into the orc still standing next to him, ripping his already significant wounds open a little more and rendering him unconscious. The spear remains stuck in the orc's side. Nalik swings his hammer, but in his excitement, sends the weapon wide of its mark. Oliana sends missiles of force slamming into two of the orcs. The one with Hengist's spear still in its side falls backwards from the impact, while the last orc standing roars in defiance.

Each person has about 3 feet of space in every direction separating them from the next nearest person, and Nalik, Oliana, and Sarrok are gagged. The tent has four poles holding the roof of it up, spaced evenly, and the tent is quite large. There is nothing else inside the tent at this time.

Either it is dark out, or the cloth of the tent is heavy enough to block out light. The location of the opening in the tent is not obvious.

Carter

*yawn* Carter just relaxes a bit. Ah. No guard duty. I slept like a baby. Aw, I've got a massive headache though, I must have slept on a rock or something. Carter tries to shift position. Hey. What the?

Carter says, "Look guys, this isn't funny. What if we were attacked right now? Nalik is going to be pissed off if he finds out."

Carter tries to slip out of the ropes. [roll0]

After that fails, Carter goes with the brute force method of escape, attempting to break the ropes which bind his hands.[roll1]

After that fails, Carter attempts to break the ropes which bind his feet.[roll2]

After that fails, Carter tries to 'jump' up, by thrusting himself away from the ground, hopeful he can pull the stakes up out of the ground. [roll3]

At least I've got clean underwear on.

Hengist comes unwillingly back into cruel consciousness. Argh... May all the Aseir damn it... My head...

Opening one eye, Hengist notes his captivity, and immediately begins to struggle against his bonds.

[roll3] To pull the stake out of the ground

Assuming all this fails, Hengist begins to assess the area.

Nalik

Almost before he tries, Nalik realizes that any attempts to escape would be futile, he tries anyway.

mmm mm mph mmph mmm mmmm

After a moment of panic when he is unable to speak, or free his hands or feet, his body stops reacting and his minds starts.

It is doubtful that their captors are Orcs or any of the other vulgar races, they would have simply killed the whole party. That implies either more intelligence by either all of their captors or at least their leader.

He looks around the room trying to assess the situation. Seeing nothing in the room, he tries to find Sarrok, hoping the little thief can wiggle his way out of the bindings. What they needed was more information.

I am assuming that will fail.

Obviously I get a nat 20 on a throwaway roll.

btw, that is a strength roll

Deladus

Groggily returning to consciousness, Deladys stares at the ceiling of the tent, blurred mind pondering the implications of a cave turning into a canvas domicile. Once awake, he sits his neck up and peers around the tent a moment before testing his restraints.

Oliana

"Ah leessth hey nneph huu co gah."

"Ah athf uh nneph phowp aphrep uor oofps."

Oliana twists her head to looks at the ropes attached to her hands, and tries to remove the gag from her mouth by rubbing it against her shoulder.

Translation (since it's not really important what she said): "At least they knew who to gag." and "I have a new found hatred for woods."

Also, if Knowledge Local, History or Geography might help her identify the folks that may have them, please let me know.

Hertz

Wondering why neither Hengist nor Oliana came to wake him for second watch, Hertz woke up to find himself tied. He tested the bindings without much hope - if anyone here had the strength to break out, it certainly wouldn't be him. At least I can fight without weapons once we are freed.

Carter

Carter continues to struggle at his bonds until he finally breaks free(in 20 rounds). In the meantime he begins to hear voices in the dark... "Hengist? Is that you? What is the horrible mumbling sound? I heard a story once.. when I was a kid about beast that was all mouths and would utter horrible spells and terrible secrets before ripping the flesh off you. You don't suppose it's one of those. I don't remember how Dad said you could stop them."

Hengist

Carter! By Thor's beard, it's good to hear your voice. Can you get loose? I can do naught against these blasted ropes! I assume they took the half-alf when they took me. Did you see them?

Hengist thrashes against his bonds again with renewed vigor.

Ah, a 'friendly' voice. Carter really puts his muscles behind it for a moment and then continues to take a 20. "Its too dark, I can't see a thing." Mumbling noises... "Ah! Did you hear that? Its getting closer!"

Hertz

"Carter, Hengist. I'm also here. It seems they put us all in the same place. I certainly can't do anything against these bonds, but if Deladus is around, he might also have a chance." Hertz pauses, considering what he could do. "We should make a role call. That's three of us already here. Nalik? Oliana? Deladus? Sarrok?" He'll pause between each name, giving the others time to answer.

Deladus

Calling out, Deladus responds to Hertz, "I'm here. But I feel.. weaker than before. I can't seem to break loose."

Frowning at himself, he strains against his bonds again before looking from side to side to see more of what is around him.

As Sarrok's name is mentioned, there is another muffled voice in the dark. "Aph! Mmheh. Unghi agh. Unghi oaph. Ay agh uh ohm ung oght oo igh?" This is followed by an annoyed noise of effort, then a rather defeated sounding, "Mm ungh."

Carter

Carter struggles and struggles and finally, hearing Hertz' voice says, "Hertz? You tied up too? Don't you have that thing with your shoulder? You know, where you can twist and get out of ropes and stuff?"

Carter finally puts together an heroic surge and manages to free his hands. Finally able to sit up, Carter smiles a big grin and looks around for something to cut the remaining ropes. Even without a tool, Carter unties his feet and then moves over to untie Nalik's hands, then Deladus, then Hengist, then Oliana, then Sarrok and finally Hertz.

Once Nalik's hands are free, he pulls the gag from his mouth.
Everyone quiet. Arrange all of the ropes, and be ready to get back into the same positions. We need to find out what is going on, and recover our gear.

Sarrok, see if you can move around and find out something about our captors.

"They managed to tie me quite effectively anyway." Hertz answered as Carter moved to untie them all.

Once free, he rubs his wrist and falls silent. Gear or not, he at lesat had the comfort of knowing he'd be capable of fighting should it be needed.

Deladus

Nodding his thanks at being released, Deladus stands and looks around the tent from the new perspective. Pointing out anything of interest to the rest of the team, Deladus otherwise does as Nalik instructed and gathers the ropes that were binding him to the floor.

Four small lights flare into existence around Sarrok as soon as he's freed, lighting up the tent nicely. After pulling off his gag, the gnome starts checking the bottom edge of the tent quietly and carefully, lifting it up very slowly. As he gets it just off the ground, dim light can be made out through the gap. He peers through the gap, then drops the edge quickly. "Orcs," he hisses. "I'll see if I can find a place to slip out." He creeps along the outer edge, repeating his experiment at one of the corners. He flashes a thumbs up and disappears, dropping the edge of the tent shut behind himself.

With enough light to see now, it appears that nothing was left in the tent with the team, aside from the ropes and stakes.

Oliana speaks quietly, peering about the room for anything they could use as a weapon. "Anyone skilled enough in rope working to make a net of these pieces? And then is anyone skilled enough in using a net to make it worth the time? Also, how effective would these stakes be as a weapon or for laying a trap?"

Still quietly, "We can also use the dirt beneath us to blind any that come through?" Oliana looks around to see if anyone else is game for setting a trap.

"Blind, trip and disarm a first rank and the fighters have weapons. Though I prefer throwing them from a distance, I can use a dagger in a pinch." In a pub, in a city, at a target and not being attacked by orcs.
