((Note, while artifacts here are designed to be used in 5e, it would be a simple matter to adapt them for 3.5/ Pathfinder. Ignore the "Non-attuned" weapon enhancement bonus and instead use the scale here: +1-> +2, +2-> +5, +3-> +8. For items that cast spells, them may cast each one 2/ day, and recharge at the normal time. Everything else should work.))

So then, everyone who knows the 5e system knows that, typically, magic items are supposed to be rare, powerful and interesting things that are basically one-of-a-kind. They would also know that these weapons are not part of the PHB, and this makes us sad.

However! The rules for attuning magic items to your body are around, and if you look in back of the Hoard of the Dragon Queen adventure path, it gives you an example of an artifact-level weapon: Hazirawn. It's sentient, it's neutral evil, and it has a difference between when you swing it with attunement, and when you swing it without. All in all, it's a good template for an artifact weapon.

So I'm going to make some of my own. As a note, this is subject to change once I get my mitts on the DMG (which should have some rules) or a magic items compendium (which I fully expect to come out in the next year or so). I'll also randomly add to this list as time goes on, so watch out for that.

Armory of the Great Traitor

Anterson Asper, while a monster, created many great and powerful artifacts, and left them behind with his dimension lock as his legacy. Each has a history and name that any in the void can recite from memory, and while almost all of them are now lost to war and greed, any native denizens of the first plane would be able to identify them by sight. As well, rumors of where the lost artifacts might be found are still whispered to this day, and many great leaders send out expeditions to recover them in desperate bids to gain their power and some kind of advantage in their endless war.

This is but a short list of these wonders, the cliff notes on their history, and why they were created in the first place. This in no way tells the full story, and it should not be assumed that the full story will ever be told. It is merely a catalogue, set out for your amusement and perusing pleasure. Enjoy.

Agony's Edge
Weapon (scimitar), epic, requires attunement

A sentient (chaotic evil) scimitar, Agony's Edge communicates through the projection of images, sensation and emotion. Even if you aren't attuned with the sword, you gain a +2 on attack and damage rolls made with this weapon. If you are attuned then any creature you damage with this weapon must make a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage imposed on all wisdom saves, actions, bonus actions and reactions it takes as agony rips into its psyche. This disadvantage lasts for 1 minute. Further failed saves against this effect refresh the duration of this debuff.
Increased Potency: If you are attuned to this weapon, the attack and damage bonus increases to +3.
Agony's Curse: While wielding this weapon, you have a -2 penalty to your armor class, and take disadvantage on your wisdom saving throws.
Twinned weapon: Agony's edge has a partner weapon. If you are attuned to the weapon Tranquility, you are not subject to the penalties of Agony's Curse or any penalties that might come from having a different alignment from Agony's Edge.

Appearance: While it may have the rough shape of a scimitar, Agony's edge shares no other characteristics of the blade. Its edge is serrated, as if made of dragon teeth and stray bits of metal, it is bone white in some places, and looks to be coated in decayed flesh in others. Its hilt is made of bone, and the jagged edges and spines coming from the hand guard and pommel look like they would scrape and pierce the hand of anyone that held it. The blade oozes a corrupt, blackened ichor that hisses evilly when it touches an object. If one listened closely while in the same room as this blade they will hear it crying out in a razor's keen as it suffers for all eternity...

Creation story: Agony's Edge was created at the end of the Trinity War as an attempt by the great warrior and (at that time hero) to alleviate the suffering of the void.

Using his vast magical abilities, Asper began to siphon all of the suffering he could from the destitute and despairing gods and mortals who had survived, trapping it within a mortal being. He used one of the Dukes of Pain, punishing the monster for all of the crimes and genocides it had committed and its horrible, blighted existence. This was too much even for the being that fed on suffering, and it began to rip itself apart in a desperate attempt to make it stop. All it accomplished was the permanent ruination of its body, leaving it trapped in a corrupt, shattered form to scream silently for all eternity. One of the duke's arms shattered in such a way that it made the shape of this blade, and Asper took it as a memento of the end of the horrors spawned in the trinity war.

History: It was only ever used as a weapon by people other than Asper, who lost it shortly after its creation when the thief Alora Minove took it from his keep. Alora used Asper's gift of the dagger Tranquility to counterbalance the harm caused by this corrupt weapon of war, allowing the thief to maintain her sanity while also making her one of the best known dualists and diplomats to ever walk the worlds of creation.

After she passed into her twilight years, Alora passed her blades down to her children, and they to the generation after that. Eventually, the magics that created both blades became so used to inhabiting the same body that they began to entwine, paradoxically feeding off of and supporting one another. In fact, it was said that the weapons were so synonymous with one another that they were often referred to as the same blade, and there was no force that could separate one from the other.

And then Eo, driven mad by the betrayal of his son Apsu and the long isolation he was forced to endure in the crater of the first world, claimed the empty throne of Oblivion and all of the horrors remaining in it. With these he waged war on all of reality, starting with the denizens of the void worlds. Alora's family was among the first casualties of this assault, her line butchered and scattered almost to the last child and her lands burnt to ash. But one son escaped with both of her blades, and his name was Justin Minove.

Justin was a dashing swordsman who both recruited Asper from his long self-exile to lead the armies of creation, and who gathered the armies of creation in the first place. He served as Asper's right hand, walking among the men and inspiring them with his courage and spirit and fighting along side them. Wherever the combat was most fierce, Justin would arrive and lay waste to his enemies as the untouchable flurry of blades so many came to call him. Under his leadership, the armies of creation rolled over the forces of oblivion, cutting a deep, bloody swathe into the worlds of his enemies in a reckless charge. With an army of hundreds of thousands behind him, Justin aimed to storm Eo's throne room to kill the injured god and end the war, despite Asper's advice and direct orders to do the exact opposite and wait for reinforcements.

Justin led his men to their deaths. Eo knew he was losing, and he knew that Justin was reckless, so he set a trap for the hot-blooded fool and waited until he was too far inside for Asper to save Justin or his forces from the jaws of oblivion. In one fell swoop, the forces of oblivion collapsed on the forces of creation, cutting their troop count in half and removing any advantage Justin or Asper had been able to claim.

Justin was counted among the casualties that day, laid low by one of oblivion's generals, and Agony's Edge and Tranquility were lost. The former was claimed by the general, a grizzly prize taken for power, while the later was thrown away because Eo and the forces of Oblivion did not understand its power. Eventually the general was defeated, but the rumors become uncertain after that. Some of the most popular rumors say that Asper took the blade back, to end the horror and sorrow it brought to all of creation, saying that it died with him in the cataclysm that was the creation of the dimension lock, or if he survived that he kept it as a reminder of what horrors his creations spawned. Others say that Lucian, greatest of the dragons of creation and the first mortal child of the Mother took it to try and find some way to use the blade to absorb and end his mother's sorrow. And still others say that Ephiel, the right hand of Void claimed it as his own for his unknown purposes. Most likely, the blade is just lost in some long-abandoned battlefield, buried under the decaying corpses and crumbling fortifications, just waiting for someone with Tranquility to find it...

Tranquility
Weapon (dagger), epic, requires attunement

This sentient (LG) dagger may communicate with its wielder telepathically, using any language you understand. Even if you aren't attuned with the dagger, you gain a +2 attack and damage bonus made with this weapon. If you are attuned with this weapon, you gain a +6 bonus on all persuasion checks to convince a creature to cooperate or consider a treaty, and all creatures within 30' of you are healed by 2d10+2 damage and cured of a stage of exhaustion at the end of a long or short rest.
Increased Potency: If you are attuned to this weapon you increase the damage and attack bonus to +3 and gain the Spellcasting and Tranquility's Hesitance qualities.
Spellcasting: Tranquility has 6 charges to cast spells. As long as the dagger is attuned to you and you are holding it, you can cast cure wounds (1 charge, 2nd level slot), bless (2 charges, 3rd level slot), sanctuary (1 charge), detect good and evil (1 charge) and protection from good and evil (2 charges). Every night at midnight if Tranquility has fewer than its maximum charges, it regains 1d6 charges, this may not increase its current number of charges above 6.
Tranquility's Hesitance: When you are attuned to this weapon, any time you make an attack roll you make it at disadvantage.
Twinned weapon: Tranquility has a partner weapon. If you are attuned to the weapon Agony's Edge, then you do not suffer from the disadvantage from Tranquility's Hesitance.

Appearance: The silver knife itself has very little to differentiate itself from a normal dagger beyond the aquamarine glow pulsing around its edge. Instead, the largest indicator of what it is comes when someone attunes themselves with the blade, which requires letting it at least partially shape their features. Tranquility's edge is able to make even the most paranoid and war hardened man appear to be at peace, outwardly demonstrating the inner calm that the weapon grants them. A creature with this weapon stands straighter, more relaxed and calm. In essence, they appear to be eternally happy, and often hum a cheerful tune that Tranquility sings in their head.

Creation story: When the diplomat and baroness Alora Minove came to Asper requesting his aid in uniting the shattered courts of creation, the ancient hero went out into the wild, blasted lands of the desecrated first world for 10 days and 9 nights. When he came back exhausted, half starved and bloodied, he handed Alora a blade he called his heart, and named it Tranquility.

Some say that the blade was forged from the last of Asper's sanity, trying to explain the actions that he took later in his life on the madness that seemed so apparent. The truth is that the hero did everything he did while absolutely sane, and that he had gone out into the battlefield to find the soul of his fallen wife. Confronting her raging spirit was what he had dreaded most in his life, and it hurt him so deeply that he withdrew from the troubles of the planes for centuries. But he succeeded, and his wife, who's name has been lost to history, found peace, dropping the weapon that had claimed her life and infusing it with her final, joyful farewell. The dagger still carries this peace to this day.

History: Created as a tool of peace, Tranquility was gifted to Alora with Asper's blessing, though he likely would not have done so if he knew that she had taken Agony's edge as well. With both blades in hand, the baroness went out to reunite her people and make a name for herself. She succeeded at both admirably, and the reformation of the creation faction can largely be attributed to her and her children.

Tranquility was rumored to be taken by Monet, the peace bringer, a captain among the forces of Oblivion who almost brought an end to the void wars before Eo decried her as a traitor and had her executed in a fit of maddened fury. She was always seen with a certain unassuming dagger at her waist, which was suspiciously absent.

Rumor says that one of three things happened. Some say that she gave it to Lucian first child of Creation, begging him to take it and find some way to end the war. Some say that Asper came to her the night before her execution and asked for it back, assuring her that he would find some way to finish her mission. They say that, even though she knew he would fail, this is why she walked to the headsman with such graceful dignity. Most people, however, say that she threw the dagger out of her prison window and someone picked it up, carrying it away to some forgotten corner of the world. Wherever it is, Tranquility waits for a new leader to come and claim it, hoping to bring an end to the suffering.
