The newcomer's welcome bar reminds us to:

Please be sure to read and abide by the forum rules (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=1) and to confine all "hello" posts to the new members say hello here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249974) thread.

Unfortunately, the link goes to an old, closed thread. Particularly for newcomers, it's a bit confusing. Only the fact that the thread was closed kept me from unintentionally committing a bit of thread necromancy with my first post... I saw the "Closed" marker and went hunting for the new one.

Unfortunately, the link goes to an old, closed thread. That is true. Updating that message is not trivial, though, so in the meantime, I locked the thread and provided a link to the new one. When the time comes, I'll update that post to the new, new one, if need be.

Particularly for newcomers, it's a bit confusing.Hopefully, only newcomers are seeing that message, but we do apologize for any confusion. The redirect is not ideal, but hopefully it's not so burdensome that it prevents anyone from saying "hello."

Only the fact that the thread was closed kept me from unintentionally committing a bit of thread necromancy with my first post... I saw the "Closed" marker and went hunting for the new one. This made me smile. So, the only thing that kept you from committing thread necromancy was that I made it literally impossible for you to commit thread necromancy? That seems pretty effective. :smallamused:

Don't get me wrong, the link is wrong, and you're absolutely right that it adds an extra click or two for new posters to find the hello thread. This is exactly the kind of thing that we want posters to point out in Board Issues, and I appreciate you doing so. But the workaround is in place because outright changing that link is more complicated than one would think and lower priority than many other things. So for now, the work around will have to suffice.

Link corrected. Thanks.
