Right, these are both really basic, they are only my second attempt at avatars

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff29/exeson/Samurai.png

And this one is the same person, it tried to make it look like he is in the wind but it did not come out right

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff29/exeson/samuraiwind.png

They are also a bit small come to think about it.

The first one looks very nice, except that the feet look too thin to me, for the second one, I would consider changing the angle of his ponytail. I actually took me about 20 seconds to figure out it isn't his\her left arm(yes I'm a twisted person).

They look very nice for a second attempt.
Hope to see more of yours :smallwink:

I've been working on a style more... 'visible' than what I have right now, so I figured I'd start by imitating the Giant's style.

So I did this:
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e92/FlameMasterAxel/PaladinGuy.gif

That is my work. I just used the original as a referencing and size tools.
The original (from the forum avatar):

At first glance, they look the same, but on deeper examination, I can see the small imperfections. Eyes, Nose, Line thickness in the horse's neck and on the amulet, and the tail is off. Of course, that's good, shows that it isn't the same image.

It's like one of those "can you find all the differences?" games, where they have two panels with small changes for you to find.

If you did the image just by eyeballing, then I have to say that you have a very good eye for proportions.

The Extinguisher

When I'm looking at something. If not, I'm complete suck.

And it wasn't completley eyeball. I did the head and body, as well as the horses ears overtop the original and then moved them over. The head and body, because I always do it too small and long repectively, and the ears because they were a pain to do.

Well I for one thought that dragon was cute! I can't draw anything quadrapedal!

On that subject, here's my latest drawing, spoilered due to size. I've got into the time consuming habit of draw OOTS versions of characters I play in roleplaying games, and here's the latest. Strum the Tiefling/Elf Sorceror, with his cowardly familiar, Blitzkrieg the badger!

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/strum.png

Before you ask, yes the badger is smoking, it just happening on the first night of play and has become a character trait!

The badgers behind a rock because I can't draw the body right...anyone have any tips on how to do so? Comments on the rest of the picture are also welcome

Excellent work, Banjo - nice, clean shapes and good colours always result in a good drawing, and this is no exception

Generally, I find references to be a great help when drawing anything unusual, so a Google search will probably find more pictures of badgers than you ever need. Alternatively, try drawing something based on the horses or Shojo's cat.

I think the wings could be better, but the only way I can really suggest to figure out how is to compare with what the Giant's done. I think the head's a little "tall" and the body slightly large. It's not clear what the effect on the body is supposed to be. The arms should be coming out closer to the top of the body. The face looks pretty good, and all in all it's a very servicable first attempt, especially with regard to the proportions.

How about...
"That's pretty good?"
Or possibly...
"I wish my first one had been that well done?"

Some of the lines look kinda thin, but the style you're using seems to fit with that. The only thing I'm curious about is why the arms and eyebrows look kinda blurry and fuzzy...

The sword effect is cool, and the hair is very well done (and green! Yay!)

Got bored, so I made the squad of goblin NPCs I get to control in a PbP.

From left to right:
Unknown Name: Rogue, got vaporized by a BFG during our escape from Earth.
Lid: Fighter, none too bright.
Doc: Expert, the smart one, leader of the bunch, and wielder of a sadly uncharged BFG.
Joe: Barbarian, explosives 'expert'. Uses his unlimited supply of TNT to the exclusion of all other weapons. Including when in melee combat.
Mark: Ranger, thinks himself to be a secret agent.

I wanted to play my blue dragon, Streak, but my players (most of them being guys) apparently decided they needed another fem in the group so I got elected to bringing out my badass Stalker/Ranger.

My only consolation is she is badass, and I found this website that allows you to animate your .gifs, so I can show her in each of her three forms :D

A couple of Inevitables. I'm not really happy with either, but especially the Marut. I was trying to get the hugeness of it without straying too far from oots style... Maybe I do just have to make the limbs bigger. I don't think I got the elegance of the Zelekhut as well as I wanted to, either, nor the pose as determined...

I've made my complaints known to the administrator and two other mods, and have been promptly ignored. But when people go around calling other people idiots or using derogatory terms, while moderators cherry pick to warn people for saying literal nonsense that isn't even remotely directed at anyone, that's when I drop all respect for said moderation.

Four-armed characters tend to be on the ugly side, but yours doesnt look that bad. The effects on the rapiers are pretty cool, but the whole guy looks kind of flat to me.

The cloak feels off.. Unless the ends of the cloak are tied to his arms somehow, it shouldnt be extended so wide.

Thicker lines tend to look better with oots drawings.

Oh, and perhaps the head should be bigger. Not consistent with oots art, it is oots-style art right?

Vaugley, I'd rather do sleves and pants than sticks, It would be full non-oots if I could draw hands, but since I can't I use oots-style hands, which makes is preety much oots style art with pant legs/shirt sleves.
And assume the cloak is a Cloak of Billowing or somthing.

Fin, very good start, I must say. The head seems to be a bit oval, and it should be round. Lines should be thicker. 2pt/px for the main parts, and and 1pt/px for detail are the "standard" sizes. I award you a cookie for having good proportions. :smalltongue:

That's really nice, Fin. No.. don't worry about line thicknesses or ovla heads, that's only for OotS purists. just run with whatever style suits you. It's nice enough as it is.

I resent that. He did say "OotS style" not "here's my style." Yes, style is good. We all have it. There's nothing wrong with getting the basics down.

Is OotS Purist a neagtive term for one to resent now? It simply means that one is drawing in an OotS style, nothing more, and nothing less. What's there to get so pufffed up about?

*

The Giant has his own style, and so does everyone else. Staying pidgeonholed into drawing stuff the Giant's way, simply because Rich draws it so, is definitely not a way to progress.

People copy art styles to lay down the basics, true. However, it would definitely appear that Fin has laid down the basics already. He should explore his own style of drawing, not merely copy other peoples' styles.

Fin -

I'm just gonna say that I don't think that the line thickness or the size of the head are problems. Really, it's an awesome avatar by itself. For a first attempt, it's amazing. The only thing I would change is that for some reason the avatar looks a little small. Not a big issue, though.

Artemician -

Really beautiful! Interesting style.

http://s233.photobucket.com/albums/ee251/mambosurfer/th_Altairnative.png

I agree with Rex Idiotarum, the torso of your avatar is too long. However, looking at references, it appears that you intended for the torso to end at the belt, and the blob below would be Altair's legs.

When the Giant draws things that hang onto legs, like cloaks, mail skirts, etc, he either does not draw it,(for armour), or he draws the entire thing hanging down, obscuring the legs (cloaks).

While there are undoubtedly other ways to draw these objects, the way you drew it looks ind of wierd, so I would retouch up the hem of the robe, if I were you.

Rex Idiotarum

I would suggest, for clothes that extend below the waist, to have it square or flare outward, not curve inward. It implies that the hips and ass are lower.

What's there to get so pufffed up about? The way you used it carried a negative air. If it appears that he's trying to get the oots style - and furthermore, if he's posting it in a thread entitled OotS Style Art - we'll give him advice on how to achieve it and it would be nice if we weren't belittled for trying to get it right.
Fin, I think I actually like your first one better than the second... The arms are certainly too high on the latter, but that's easy enough to fix. The head looks a bit... blobby, too, but that could just be an unfortunate side-effect of the... hood? For the first, there's not much to say. The head does seem to be a bit oval, and the lines are maybe a touch too thin, but all in all it looks quite servicable.

Belittled? I have already clarified that for me, the term OotS Purist carries no insult, and intends no harm. If you got out of your way to be offended by it, then there's nothing further I can do -_-'

The head looks a bit... blobby, too, but that could just be an unfortunate side-effect of the... hood?.....

Oh.. I almost forgot. Yes, the hood looks quite awkward. Hoods are cut at the same time as the rest of the cloak, and as such the cloak and the hood should be streamlined. At the moment, your hood looks like an extraneous helmet. Retouch it such that it flows naturally into the cloak.

Nice party, Banjo! Is that for a webcomic?

I find that when drawing anything, references helps - try googling pictures of whips (or checking Wikipedia or something). I'd probably draw it as several circles of slightly differing shades, with a handle and end coming off, all as seperate objects.

Why is the drow's belly button blue? :smalltongue:

Also, a little detail on Fozzy's armour would help. I don't mean going in and covering it with random lines, but some small object to hold interest, like a medallion, or the skull of some strange creature, would make a nice little addition.

Nemglam... wow, your art is as impressive as ever. Fantastic use of colour and excellent shading! What software do you use? Also, do you start drawing every character from scratch, or is the first image a 'generic figure' that you adapt for every drawing?

Aaaand... here's some of my own recent art, a Warforged Ninja. The only detail specified by the guy who requested it was 'magenta details'.
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/8255/ninjaforgedyd8.pnghttp://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5164/ninjaforgedlf9.png
The second one has the brightness increased slightly for clarity.

Heh oh yeah, hadn't noticed how blue it actually looked, might be better in black I think. Thanks for the tips on the whip, I'm going to have a pop at that tonight and see how well it comes out. Fozzy does need something, the sash is their for that exact purpose, but I agree that he needs something else just have to think of something...

Yes, they are a gang of low level evil characters for a new webcomic idea I have. My first attempt at doing one didn't really work out, but I have more ideas for this one and I'm putting in more preperation to make sure it doesn't fizzle out like the last one. I have a lot of ideas for a group of anti-heroes, and these are the charasmatic little guys that are going to sit centre stage  Watch this space, and hopefully I'll have something in a month or so. I was asking for comments mainly because I want to get the characters right before I start making comics.

That Warforged is pretty impressive, but the change in brightness on the second one helps it quite a bit. My only little query is his left (from our point of view) boot, is the back supposed to be that jagged?

Nemglan - That's really impressive, especially the way you layer up bit by bit...I wish I had the patience to draw my avatars like that, they'd probably end up looking better!

Aye, CorelDraw.

Also, do you start drawing every character from scratch, or is the first image a 'generic figure' that you adapt for every drawing?

Usually from scratch. If I have a reference picture - like I had for say, this Mind Flayer (http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/1020/squidthingykw4.gif) (reference (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG187.jpg)) - then I'll trace the basic shapes and adapt them to a generic stick figure.

Hey Simius, I made that mistake here once, I vaguely remember you scolding me for it....however.....I used it not expresly, just an mistake from my dutch origin, since in dutch 'u' is a politer version of you...

Did I? I don't remember. I'm normally not that nitpicky, really.

As for the Dutch 'U', I had never thought about that way (though I most certainly Dutch myself). It's pretty funny, actually.

Also, I drew this because I was bored:

Wow, Doihaveaname? goes full OoTS again! I say, make the mouth, hands and arms black. They're pretty indistinctive at the moment. Also, try to make the spikes on the chain sharper. They look a bit blunt. Perhaps make the shadow/evil twin/whatever-it-is-on-the-background somewhat lighter to create some more contrast.

@Trazoi: That's quite good. Perhaps adding a bit more detail will make your goggles more recognizable as such. I mean, where's the glass?

1, if you're going to use Paint, take a look at the tutorial thread. It's floating around the second page of threads, I think. 2, the head shouldn't sit atop the body like that. Look at any avatar here and you'll see it should sit much lower. Take a real good look at the Giants work or the avatars here, and practice. He seems to be... lacking legs. Also, I'd suggest a 117px or 120px squ. box to start. You can open any avatar in Paint, saving a copy of it and using the space. I'm sure others will have more constructive advice than I.

Agree with everything else, if you use paint, it is better to start it large and then resize it in another program like Photoshop to remove the pixelation. Also the legs look really wierd...

Pirate Phane, hands can be surprisingly difficult to get right. I think the best way I can help you with that is to show you one of my more limby avatars:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h287/serpentine16/Avatarables/Serpentine/SerpMarilithLrg.gif
Unfortunately I messed up the one holding the mace when I enlarged the picture, but you get the idea.
The only other problems with that one that I can pinpoint are that I think the necklace should be behind the head, the lines could be just a little thicker, and the pants are too low (he looks like a homey :smallyuk:).
For your spellbreaker, it's hard to say... The sheer amount of detail makes it hard to see much ootsiness, but... I can't see anything to suggest it isn't. I think you managed very well to get all that detail in without it looking crowded (well, no more than the guys actually are in Warcraft).

Mause, it is definitely an improvement. The body's a bit off, too stiff and a bit skinny (or the head's a bit big). The hair needs some work, too. I think the best you could do is go back and compare it with the Giant's work.

Phane, you're definitely improving! Serp's suggestions for the blademaster are good ones. As for the spell breaker, I don't really see anything wrong with it. It's really very good. The only thing I would do is maybe make it a little less compact, i.e. moving his weapon and shield away from his body a little in order to make it seem a little less busy. I dunno

Anyway, some more Half-Wit stuff. I'm seriously considering starting it up again soon (this time with at least several comics drawn in advance, and maybe a little less hectic update schedule). :smallwink:

Hmm, yeah. I should probably work on that. I can draw heads pretty well, but I can never seem to get the body/anything else right. >_< That's why I love OOTS stick figures so much. :P

Oh, and I just figured I would post this because I just managed to retrieve it after a lot of searching. Which means I'm happy. So here. :D

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I couldn't move the shield from the Spellbreaker unless I wanted to draw one half of the avatar all over again, or recolour it.
Yup, I'm a lazy bastard. :3

Here's the fixed blademaster, though, and one other avatar I just did for someone in the avatar request thread.

The only real problem with your artwork, gnome, is the pixelation (and possibly the stiffness of the arms). I believe there is a way to deal with that, but I don't use paint and the like myself...

After a while, I've finally started getting back into doing the more OotS style avis. It's gotten kind of rough, really.

Sneak, your avatars are amazingly detailed as always.

My only suggestion is to modify the poses somewhat, especially that of the armoured guy with the green details. Currently, he's standing in a very symmetrical pose and holding his swords up in an odd way. If you made him kneel, or better still put him in an action pose (and some perspective might also be pretty fun), or some other, more interesting pose that you come up with, it would probably be one of the best on the boards.

The halfling has a pretty good pose already, although if he was leaning around the corner somewhat and looking at the people in the courtyard rather than just stepping out it might look more likely. Then again, that would mean the wall would have to move forwards, which would cover up some of the people.

Really, I'm only giving critiques because you said you weren't happy with them, because I honestly think they're both excellent avatars.

I prefer the Archer, mainly due to personal preference. Also IMO, the pose looks better, the fighter looks like he's in a forced posistion.

PP, it was pointed out to me the other day that a lot of avatarists, if they did the some of the feet seen on the Order of the Stick, would be terribly disappointed in their work. The feet are always very simple - simplistic, even. You mostly don't need to do the different pieces of it. I think I prefer the archer, too. However, the pants are a bit funny, and the hand over the face doesn't work - I think in the latter case, it might be better if you had the hand lower with the string pulled back. It kinda looks like it's casting some sort of voodoo spell over the bow or something as it is... Slightly thicker lines might help. In the case of the knight, the most glaring problem is that the eyes are too big. I've had a lot of trouble getting that right, but the eyes take up surprisingly little space in oots art. The other thing is that the arms are too stiff: I think that just having the shield arm holding the shield up a bit, so it's on a curve, and the other with the hand on its hip or something like that would make it look a lot more natural. The skin colour of that guy looks a bit odd, too. Again, slightly thicker lines might help. Oh, and it doesn't matter so much, but generally oots eyes are completely black. In all, though, they both look very good. You've definitely got "pretty" down.

A new avatar request, based on this (http://www.shiroitsubasa.com/shiroitsubasa/Kurama_Wall_800.jpg) picture. I'll just post the sig version, seeing as it has the whole of the avi in it:

Yareth: Very, very good, especially for a first try!

The only important thing that I would change is make it so the mouth stays firmly inside the beard. Right now, part of the mouth sticks out of his bear, and it just really bothers me. Also, the whole avatar seems kind of small, but that's not really a problem necessarily.

But all in all, it's great.

BRC: Awesome. I especially like the rhinos and all of the avatars in the last row.

Kigg: I think that's pretty good. I actually can't see any blurryness, but maybe that's just my magical anti-blurry compy. Anyway, just some advice:
-the eyes should be thicker and closer together.
-the mouth should be thicker
-one of the feet looks like it's coming out of the robe at a weird angle, maybe
Also, his hair is kind of shapeless. I am a firm believer that the hair of an avatar can really make a difference. Maybe it's because I love my own beautiful hair so much. :P

But really, it's very good. Just a few more things to fix up.

Serpentine: I love it. Looks a lot like the picture he posted. Really cool...even if it is VERY red. :P
