Hi there,

My gnomish sorcerer will soon be investing in a level of druid, and will be taking an animal companion. I was thinking either riding dog or wolf*. Anyway, I've been trying to find a decent mini to represent either or, and I'm struggling. The standard WotC wolf seems to be unavailable everywhere, and I've seen no sign of a dog miniature. Any thoughts?

*As a side note, I was also wondering whether gnomes could also use the wolf as a mount?

Thanks in advance!

You could try going to a toy-store (even at walmart) and looking for those pocket pound things. I have a ton of them because I'm a horrible person and adore the tiny doggies. Yes, my group was once attacked by a pack of dire wolf/poodles.

You could look into using any 4-legged animal as your animal companion.

Yes.

The art major in my group made her own mini's.

A side note, everyone hates her.

I like those, Rigeld. I assume they're to scale?

theyre designed for Heroic 25mm or 28mm... one of the two, I dont remember. Either way, itll be close/just right.

Huh, I'll check them out, thanks.

Any other suggestions?

Reaper is 25mm while the D&D minis game is 28mm. Unless you plan on using the biggest creatures from either company the scale is largely unnoticed at that level most games use.

Not to break the 1/15th scale realism, but am I the only one that uses d4s for animals companions and the like?

Well, this is my first tabletop campaign, and we've been using minis for complicated battles. Since I come from a Warhammer background, and I like the minis, I wanted something that actually looked like what my animal companion would be.

I don't think you are, my group used to use all kinds of things to represent people in combat (LEGO was one of the better ones btw!), but as our incomes got bigger we were able to afford more mini's for more things.

Playmobile people FTW! (though Lego rocks Squishy)
You can even equip them properly(ish)

I really like the winter wolf model (which I can actually find for sale!) but that would be way too big, wouldn't it?

if you have more money than you know what to do with, you could order a Goblin Wolf rider mini from Games Workshop. Goblins are about the same size of gnomes, so conversion may be easier.

So are the GW dire wolves about the right size for a DnD wolf?

Gnomes can talk to burrowing animals right, and a druid has the option of taking the badger (listed as a burrowing mammal in the SRD) as an animal companion.

Does this mean a Gnome Druid can have a Badger as a companion that it can converse with and explain complicated plans to, negating the need for tricks (edit - Or spells for that matter. I know Speak with animals is only a 1st level druid spell, but it's a spell that could be used elsewhere)?

Larger than a normal wolf, but smaller than a Dire Wolf. I'd call it a wash.

No. Gnomes can do that once a day, and it lasts for one minute. It wouldn't let them communicate complex information to their companion over the course of multiple encounters.

You could get the Timber Wolf mini from the D&D Miniatures game... That's from a much more recent set, so they're available on eBay at decent prices.

If you have a local gamestore somewhere, there might be people there who can sculpt one for you.

Just the other day, I got to admire a model made by a girl at my LGS. She managed to sculpt a microscopicly small squirrel as an animal companion for a character!

Oh yeah, I think I was confused as it lists it under the languages section in the PHB as well as spell like abilities.

Yeah, I like the Timber Wolf mini, though it's not on eBay right now, it will be. Also, I like the Winter Wolf, but I wasn't sure about scale, as I said earlier. Are these two to scale for a normal wolf?

The winter wolf has a large base, so it wouldn't work as an animal companion (though it does make a nice standin for the dire wolf that you get from Summon Nature's Ally).

I'm seeing a bunch of timber wolf minis on eBay right now though - maybe they're getting lost amongst the other timber wolf related items? Try looking for 'timber wolf deathknell'

Yeah. For some reason they didn't come up before. Thanks very much. The timber wolf is the right size, then?

Yes, it's got a medium base, and it actually looks bigger and meaner than the normal wolf.

In a pinch, you could always use actual cats and dogs to represent animal companions. Just hang a sign over their necks- WARNING! MINIATURE NOT TO SCALE.

Hehe, actually, my cat loves hiding things, so introducing her to 28mm figures probably isn't the best idea. :P

Who was it who said something about letting a cat loose to be the Tarrasque miniature?
