Yea, so I've got a new DM trying to convert 3.5 to a space opera theme. Magic becomes cybernetics and ****. I've told him it isn't really the best system for it, suggesting shadow run and traveller. He won't listen. Any ideas to help in either direction?

d20 Modern has books that work with that
d20 Modern: Future and d20 Modern: Cyberscape are the direction to point him in

If he wants to go into a less technology based space faring campaign, Spelljammer might interest him. Not sure how much 3.5 content is out there though.

There is always T20, the traveller conversion to the d20 system...
Books are kinda hard to find though...

Dragonstar is D&D in space, with lasers and blasters and FTL ships and robots and cybernetics and computers etc.
It also has all the normal D&D stuff like dragons (they got tired of being killed by adventurers so they took over a lot of the galaxy), mind flayers, drow, magic, outsiders, etc. There's a lot of magitech stuff too, but if you want just plain non-magical stuff it should be easily refluffed.
It's for 3.0, however, but the conversion shouldn't be too hard and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that people have made conversion handooks.

Seconded. It is a fantastic system, and pretty well balanced (though force users can still get out of hand). I would say take the classes, talents, feats, vehicles, droids, skills, weapons, refluff the races, and maybe cut back on the force aspect unless you want "magic in space." Note: Magic in space is very fun!

It is a fantastic system

Well now. To give a slightly less glowing view of SWSE: I detest the skill and Force systems and think they should be burned at the stake of Bad RPG Mechanics. The rest is pretty decent.
