You stand in Brindol, one of the central towns of Elsir Vale and also the largest in the area. Life had been peaceful for all the citizens of the vale for the last decade, when the war against the Red Hand of Doom was finally won. During your travels to Brindol you have heard bits and pieces of the story of the Red Hand of Doom and you know that everyone in the vale has been hearing rumors of small attacks on the town by packs of hobgoblins, which was a large portion of what the the Red Hand army consisted of.

Ten long years have passed since, but people have been on edge since hearing about the attacks, spurring merchants to hire mercenaries and adventurers seeking fortune and/or fame to escort them through the vale to Brindol. Since you have been in town, you have been hearing rumors that some of the newer councilmen have decided to rely on local and passing adventurers to help defend the town and put a stop to these attacks once and for all.

I'd like everyone to give a basic idea of what their character would be doing shortly after arriving in Brindol.

Dale Keter, Wild Mage

Dale Keter walked into town, with his trusty mule, Chesa, in tow. He wore plain-looking and practical clothing that let him blend into the crowd. Still, Dale did not completely trust his safety to his ability to hide in plain sight; on his belt, at either side of his waist, hung two fancy daggers bearing the trademark of a famous blacksmith on the edge of the Vale. Neither of the two blades were Dale's true weapon; hidden in his long left sleeve was an magic wand made from a fallen branch of an ancient oak, a focus for Dale's otherwise unfocused wild magic.

"Enough introspection, Chesa, time to get to work." The mule tirelessly carried most of Dale's stuff on the long walk to Brindol, including his small but precious cargo of cinnamon spice. Three pounds of the sickeningly sweet substance would fetch a pretty penny and help pay for his first month or so in town. The sorcerer's first stop would be the market, where he'd bring the spice to his customer and get paid for it.

The young elf sees the town from afar, seemingly tired from his long journey in the wilderness, he is filled with awe and curiosity for this new "world". Having never been in a human town, Yrian stumbles in through the north gate and through the market clumsily bumping into people, tents, mounts, and whatever he crossed, overwhelmed with the amount of people and flowing trade, in his mind the contrasting memory of the stillness and grace of the silvery elven towers and cities dotted with the tallest trees.

After shaking this first admiration, Yrian sternly remembers what he is here for, setting forth to walk the town, looking for a certain temple of Selûne he heard about, the Moondust temple it was, surely it would be not harder to find than the previous days barely eating through his journey... Wait, eating, that's one thing he hadn't done decently in days, that thought crossed his mind right as he set eyes upon the sign for the Antler and Thistle. Speaking to himself in a low tone, in elven "Surely a fitting place to come about any information around here... And anything is better than these dry rations as far as human cuisine might go.", assertively nodding in silence, he furrows his brow and walks into the tavern, hoping to get some food, rest, and information about his brother and the others in his squad.

Mandil Freowineson (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=43543)

Mandil entered the town and proceeded to the marketplace. There he endeavored to see who if anyone was trying to do anything about the threat to the north as well as seeing if there were any devotees to Waukeen in that area or the street of the guilds. He spends the rest of his time browsing through the streets and trying to determine what merchants are relatively honest in dealing and which ones are successfully acting unscrupulously for his future reference.

Hadarai Liadon, after spending days trying to escape from the thickly dense woods just east of Dauth, after traveling 30 long miles due north with only the ragged clothes on his back and whatever food he could find, after escaping death, not once, but twice, fighting filth fever from dire rat bites, stumbled through the south gates of Brindol. Wandering through the streets, he got many prolonged looks from passersby. Completely ignoring them, he was intent on finding something to eat. Looking ahead, he saw the tattered sign of the Brindol Gentleman's Club. Knowing he wouldn't get much with the five silver pieces he had left. But he was determined to get something, some food, maybe a drink, possibly a job if he's lucky. As soon as he stepped through the door, all eyes turned to him.

Nervously, he approached the counter, "What can I get for five silver pieces?". Everyone listening, which was everyone in the tavern, erupted into an immense chorus of laughter. A blush came to Hadarai's face, and he knew he should probably leave. The barkeep felt sort of sorry for the poor chap, "Here, sit down in this booth here. That's right. Just sit there and I'll get you something to eat. No, don't worry about paying, this one's on the house." Haidarai relaxed in the nice leather cushioned seat that he had been offered. He woke up to the smell of cooked fish, straight from the Elsir River on the north side of town, complimented with sliced potatoes for flavor. "Someone needs a nap", the barkeep said as he returned to serve his other guests. Hadarai quickly mumbled a "Thanks" before burying his face into the potatoes, drawing more cautious looks.

He did leave one of his precious pieces of silver on the table, which prompted more laughter from the drunk guys sitting in the corner. Blushing once more, he scurried out of the tavern to find a place to spend the night, but not before he slipped a few gold pieces out of the pockets of the intoxicants. "This should be helpful later" he thought with a smile.

Ugh... English 9 Lyceum has ruined me! Almost every sentence begins with a gerund or gerund phrase! spending traveling escaping fighting wandering ignoring finding looking knowing. 9 in the first paragraph!

Kuranath stops for a bit to adjust his grip on the pulling cart. The two-wheeled wagon, loaded with a towering stack of sacks of grain, wasn't meant to be pulled by human hands. His traveling companion rushes to his side, Are you ok? Is it too heavy? Kuranath gives him a reassuring smile, Not at all Maurice. Just getting a firm grip. He sets his feet, bends his knees, and then straightens up, lifting the cart up behind him and pulling it forward with each step. The effort is brief and he falls into a steady walking pace. Maurice falls in beside him. I can't thank you enough Mr. Kuranath. My wife and I had heard of you, and the folks around here speak well enough of you. But what luck that you were happening by when you did. When my mule went lame right there on the side of the road, I just didn't know what I was going to do. I certainly can't haul all that weight around. He spares Kuranath a sidelong glance, It isn't too much for you is it? Kuranath chuckles, Worry not Maurice, worry not. Here we are at the gates already, and the market is not much further.

The two enter the south side of Brindol, and begin to make their way to the market on the north side of the town. The people are still bustling around the city as they always are when Kuranath stops on through. Everyone seems to have somewhere to go, and he knows it will be even more crowded closer to the market. He catches the people around him looking at something and Kuranath follows their gaze. A pale, bedraggled elf with dark red hair had shambled into the city before them, and the man looked like he could use a hot meal and a good night's rest. Maurice had spotted the elf as well, Hmmph, let's steer clear of that one. As they pass by the Gentleman's Club, the pair watch the elf hesitate before walking through the door. Kuranath winces with sympathy and shakes his head.

Once at the market, Kuranath helps Maurice unload the cart, lifting the heavy grain sacks with relative ease. Are you sure you can get the cart back on your own? he asks. Maurice waves away the question, Yes, yes, of course. Thank you Kuranath, thank you. I wish there was more I could give you for your help. No need. I'm glad I was there. Maurice reaches into his pack and pulls out a heavy sack, Just what we agreed on then. I certainly have no use for these. Kuranath accepts the bundle, some items left behind by a couple of cattle thieves Maurice and his neighbor had chased off his property one night. Before parting, Maurice holds onto Kuranath's arm, How long you going to be around? Kuranath looks at the man questioningly, I don't know. Not long I think. Maurice shakes his head slowly and lets go of Kuranath's arm. Too bad then, too bad. Have you heard what's happening son? Kuranath doesn't say anything, letting the man continue. Hobgoblins. Groups of them roaming around the Vale and attacking people. They say it's bad. A portent of things to come. Kuranath frowns, I have heard of some attacks. He thinks of Lamuriel, and his frequent visits to the North. He hadn't seen of heard from the elf in some time. What of it? Maurice grows visibly shaken, Do you remember the Red Hand of Doom Kuranath? No Maurice. I had not yet come to the Vale then. But I have heard stories. What you've heard is true, all of it, and worse. The farmer starts to wring his hands as he speaks, his eyes fixed on distant points, Goblin hordes, giants terrorizing the Vale. Many lost their lives, and all lost someone close to them. And now... it's happening again. Kuranath slings the sack over his shoulder and readjusts his traveling pack, It sounds like a job for the lawmen Maurice, but hopefully it will not come to that. Maurice pulls on Kuranath's arm as the half-orc turns to leave, The lawmen won't be enough. They weren't last time and they won't be this time. We need men like you Kuranath. Men of character and strength. Kuranath shrugs his arm out of Maurice's grip, but the man's earnest and fearful expression seems genuine. I... will keep that in mind Maurice. Maybe I'll stay a little longer. The farmer nods his head thankfully, Good good. Thank you Kuranath, and turns away with his cart to begin the journey back home. Kuranath shakes his head after the man and finds a spot in the market where he can go through the items of the sack and determine what, if anything, can be bartered or sold.

-Dale:

As Dale steps out into the marketplace and begins to try to sell his wares, he is momentarily distracted by a bright glinting light from nearby. Looking over to see where the light came from, he sees a tall dark skinned merchant standing next to his wagon holding a small metallic object in his hand, which is creating the glare of sunlight.

Dale recognizes him instantly as a trustworthy associate named Garick that he has done work with in the past, and begins to make his way over to him. Garick grins and says, "I would say fancy meeting you here, but we both know why i was sent. Our 'friends' have arranged for me to be your liaison in the area, and if they believe you are worthy of the effort, you my friend, are in good favor indeed. Report to me with all your findings of these attacks on the town, and make allies to help you bring them down. Trust me, a lone hero usually turns out to be a dead hero. Make allies and keep them close....... well maybe not too close.... we all know what happened last time." He says the last with a knowing wink. "I've heard some of the councilmen are checking on local talent in the taverns, since that's usually where they like to hang out. Get to the Antler and Thistle by nightfall, i know that's one of the places they plan to recruit from."

-Yrian:

Yrian steps into the Antler and Thistle to a very friendly atmosphere. Only three of the tables had people sitting at them, but everyone seemed to be in good spirits, laughing and joking amongst themselves. Four men sat at a table in the back corner playing a rousing game of cards of which apparently quite a few coppers were on the line. A large hearth burns low in the center of the room, casting a cheery glow around the dimly lit tavern.

As Yrian glanced over to the left, he sees a long bar, with a tall bald man cleaning some copper mugs. Stepping over to the bar to ask for food and drink, the barkeep greets him with a big grin. "Well met! Food and drink, coming up quickly sir. Please, take a seat, We'll have it to you very soon."

Within minutes, a lovely half-elf lass brings his food. "Good day to you sir, i couldn't help but notice you have the look of the road about you. My father works for one of the councilmen for the town and he gave me instructions to spread the word that they will be coming around to attempt to hire people such as yourself to help out the town. He should be coming around in a short while if you are interested."

-Mandil:

Mandil slips back and forth between this merchant and that, attempting to determine if any dirty dealings are going on, but as far as he can tell, everyone is sincerily open and honest with each other. The main thing he knows is that all the merchants are worried and talking about the recent attacks on the town. He catches small bit of conversations about councilmen hiring mercenaries and adventurers to help defend the town against the hobgoblins.

"...said some people are missing..."
"...heard they are recruiting right out of the taverns!"
"... told me they stole..."
"... -ler and Thistle among others..."

-Hadarai:

Hadarai had just stepped out of the Gentleman's Club and turned the corner, when a figure stepped out of the shadows, grabbing him from behind and placing a dagger to his throat. "Too slow Had, much too slow..." With a laugh, Hadarai was released, turning to find an old friend standing before him. The stocky dwarf stood taller than most, with a patch over his right eye. Hadarai had never known the dwarf's true name, everyone in the dungeon had always just called him Cyclops for short. "I finally got out myself, just took me a little longer. I'm back in with my old guild and they want to set up a small 'business' here, if you get my drift. I wanted to let you know i would be around if you need anything. If i were you, I'd get myself over to the Antler and Thistle, word has been going on about councilmen coming around trying to recruit people to help defend the town. Maybe those men will have some decent coin to steal. If you happen to get hired on, even better. I'll be working on setting up a guild front. Good luck."

-Kuranath:

As Kuranath was walking through the marketplace, everyone turned to look as he came by. Finding a merchant to sell his items, he inquires why he keeps getting stares from all the local merchants all of a sudden. "Word on the street is that the councilmen are really trying to hire some men to counter the attacks we've had on the town recently. You are getting so many stares because you are a healthy strong fellow and people are putting their hopes into people like you to keep them safe. I would say it's safe to say if you headed over to the Antler and Thistle tonight, you would be in the right spot to get hired on and make some coin if you are interested."

"Hello there," Dale greeted Garick. Then, going straight to business, he replied to the man's orders, "The Antler and Thistle by nightfall? Good, that should give me enough time to unload my wares and get the coin to pay for a meal and a few nights' stay if I don't get hired right away."

Dale then went around visiting his various customers to deliver the spices that they ordered, then headed to the Antler and Thistle for some rest and relaxation and to hopefully get hired on by the local authorities.

Kuranath looks around at the people staring and whispering, fear and hope are on mixed display among them. He turns his attention back to the merchant, The Antler and Thistle? The merchant nods his head. I know where it is. He picks up his belongings and straps them back over his shoulders and makes his way to the river. The people watch as he leaves, whispering more excitedly, probably wondering where he is going or what he will do. Kuranath wishes he could put their fears to rest and make them feel safe. If a person needs help, he will help them. But Brindol? The Vale? What could Kuranath do to stop an army? He had chased off cattle rustlers, and occasional goblin bravos coming down from the Wyrmsmokes to prove themselves. But something like what he had heard of the Red Hand of Doom? Still, he is the strongest looking man he can see in the market today, and he can't ignore that. He shakes his head, gives the people staring at him a passing glance, and continues on. He'll wash the grime of the road off at the banks, and make his way back to the Antler and Thistle just before sundown to hear what the councilmen have to say.

Mandil suddenly realized that he might be wasting time if the town was already recruiting for the force to go out. He found the next group that seemed to be whispering and addressed one of them.

Excuse me sir, do you know which taverns they are recruiting in? I was looking to go and help against the bandits.

He then started out towards the tavern(s) indicated to try and join the recruiters.

Yrian looks quite surprised with the friendly atmosphere, his eyes move across the room and the patrons as slowly walks over to the bar, still getting used to the smells of burning firewood and cooking around. As he approaches the man, he poses himself fully erect and nods almost methodically in silence, then taking a sit on a tall stool, sighing as he rests his feet a bit and lays his backpack and shield with a heavy *thud* against the wood below his stool (feet carefully placed over the bag so no one could take it, of course).

Lost in his thoughts, preocupied with his missing brother, Yrian almost doesn't notice as the half-human comes by, which kind of surprises him, as he instinctively lets a disapproving look escape his face for a brief moment before his manners take over and he smiles courtly as she speaks, then responding "Your observation skills do serve you right, milady, for long I've journeyed and so I've heard of these troubles your people were facing lately... I will talk to this councilman of yours then, and do what I can to help, so likewise he might help me with some information..." then nodding slowly, as to dismiss the lady and turning over to his plate of food, trying to identify the contents of the soup and bread, but eventually giving up and eating it, chugging down with whatever is available.

Haidarai rubbed his neck were the dagger was. He never really liked the spiteful dwarf, but he kept Cyclops around for company. With a stomach full of food and a good nap under his eyelids, Hadarai felt more confident. It took a little bit for him to figure out where the Antler and Thistle was, because most people just ignored the tattered newcomer. As he approached the next tavern, he saw a well groomed man (with large pockets able of carrying large amounts of coin) walking toward the same location. Refusing the temptation to check for cash, Hadarai asked, "Hello! A 'friend' here told me that there may be some trouble around Brindol. Is there anyway that I could help?"

The inside of the Antler and Thistle is warm and inviting and the atmosphere is cheerful and light as people sit and drink and laugh with friends. Long and short tables are scattered about the tavern in seemingly random order while in the center of the room a large hearth casts cheerful flickering shadows along the floor and walls. Along the left wall runs a long bar with a tall bald man pouring drinks and placing them on serving trays for the two slender women to take out to the various tables.

Looking around the place, you see several people fitting the bill of "mercenary or adventurer" types sitting lazily in their seats, apparently waiting for the councilmen to come around and hopefully hire them. Off in the back corner of the room, four men sit at a table that is currently holding quite a nice pile of copper and a few silver pieces as they play endless hand after hand of some type of card game.

As the front door squeaks open, two gentlemen, one human and one half-elf, walk in without closing the door behind them, stepping towards the center of the room. After looking around at the people around the room, the half-elf speaks up in a loud voice, "Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen. If we may have but a moment of your time. My name is Eoffram and my friend here is named Travik and we are two of the councilmen that represent Brindol and much of the vale where security is concerned. The council has never really been the type to hire mercenaries or the like to defend the town, but drastic times call for desperate measures. We've come to hire some folks to help defend against these hobgoblin attacks among other things. We aren't going to discuss any particulars until we've hired some folks for sure and feel like we can trust them."

Kuranath spends most of his time down at the riverbanks washing off the dirt of the road and thinking on what Maurice and the merchant had said. He doesn't like to think that someone like Maurice might be attacked by hobgoblins. The man is tough sure, and strong. He is a farmer after all. But Maurice is no warrior. A good man, with a good heart. He'd fight to protect his family and home. But against hobgoblin marauders... well, Kuranath knows better than anyone, the savage men that raid out of the wilderness, the dark parts of the world where decent folk don't go, those men are vicious. Their cruelty would swallow Maurice and his family whole before the farmer could raise his arm in defense. Kuranath looked around. The same can be said for the tanner a ways down the bank, and for the tax collector making his way back over the bridge. The porter hauling goods at the docks, and the boys skipping stones in the water; none would fair well. His eyes track the guards at the city gates. The guards and militiamen would fare better. But Kuranath had spent years on raids with the Storm Fury clan. Guards are trophy kills, targeted first and ganged up on to take down, prove your worth, and strip of gear. Let the weak men and women and children flee in terror while the fighting men get slaughtered first. Then do what you will with the rest as you please.

He grimaces at the memories of his early life. He has been atoning ever since he came to the Vale. If he really wants to make things right for the things he had done then, he will take up the sword to defend the Vale.

After washing, he packs up his gear a little tighter, and spends the rest of the time sharpening his sword and wiping it with an oilcloth. As the sun begins to set, he makes his way to the Antler and Thistle. The atmosphere is light and jovial; strange given the reason for the meeting. Some men are enjoying games at the tables, while others, those with the looks of mercenaries, wait with bored expressions for the proceedings to begin. Kuranath sits near the hearth, leaning against a column and closing his eyes.

He doesn't nap very long, when two gentlemen enter the tavern. One a human, the other looks like an elf, or maybe a half-elf. The elf speaks, "Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen.

Kuranath stands to his feet, but does not say anything. He wants to know what is going on, but will let others with more mercenary experience ask the questions.

Dale is the second to stand up, and the first to comment on the councilors' announcement. "Food, drink, and shelter (and a bit of coin) and I'll be happy to volunteer in killin' these pests. Kill 'em all and let the goblinoid gods sort 'em out! Yeah!" Dale tries to get the tavern patrons excited, hoping to get them to echo his cheer.

Yrian turns around on his stool, looking over as the councilmen start talking, listens carefully, then, after the rather excited man speaks, he simply raises his hand lazily until he is noticed, then nods and puts it back down, crossing his arms and waiting, as he stares at the councilmen and others who have stood up already, slowly analyzing them with a serious face.

Mandil Freowineson (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=43543)

The elf entered the inn after spending a little time searching and saw from where he stood in the rear of the inn that the recruiting was already in progress.

"Count me in as well. Never let it be said that elves or honest tradesmen hesitated when goblins threatened. I say we drive these wretches away and repay the gold that you spent on us a dozen times over and will count on those with me to do the same."

His voice boomed through the tavern causing several people to involuntarily glance over their shoulders.

The voice and font size is due to his using Thaumaturgy to cause his voice to boom three times louder than normal.

Everyone had been cheering and chanting a rousing cry of "Kill 'em all and let the goblinoid gods sort 'em out! Yeah!" before turning with a start at the loud booming voice coming from the entrance to the tavern. "Count me in as well. Never let it be said that elves or honest tradesmen hesitated when goblins threatened. I say we drive these wretches away and repay the gold that you spent on us a dozen times over and will count on those with me to do the same." Several people looked around with half drawn blades, wondering where this commotion had come from before sitting down and sheathing their weapons.

Before anyone can respond to the wood elf's loud proclamation, the door is pushed open by a short old man with long white hair holding a walking cane in his right hand to steady his footing. "Eoffram! Travik! I knew you two were up to no good! What is the meaning of this outrage! Hiring mercenaries off of the street? The council will be beyond angry!"

Travik stepped forward with a scowl at the newcomer. "Tomas, Eoffram and i have every right to defend this town as we see fit. We've sat on our backsides long enough old man, these attacks must be sto---!"

Travik gasped to a stop as Eoffram dove past him, pushing the old man to the ground with a cry of, "Look out!" Crashing into Tomas and rolling him out of the doorway, Eoffram rolls to his back and you can clearly see blood beginning to pool under his shirt where a crude dagger is protruding from his side as four humanoid creatures scurry in from the tavern entrance. The two in front stand tall with red-orange skin, yellow eyes and wide mouths sporting many teeth. They wear worn chain mail, with long swords in one hand and shields in the other. The two behind stand shorter and somehow more sinister as they glare with glee in their eyes, holding a short sword in one hand and small bottles with flaming rags sticking out of the tops in the other.

In a panic, people begin running for the back door out of the tavern.

I'd like everyone to let me know where there character is currently sitting or standing in the tavern, and since i'm taking the time to do that, everyone might as well go ahead and roll initiative. The 'R' will be the bartender, I'll place other npcs next post.

As they rush in, the hobgoblin and their goblin kin are surprised at just how many people are standing around the room. They hesitate momentarily before attacking. The other people in the tavern mostly cower in fear, other than the barkeep who pulls a club out from under the bar and the men at the corner table in the back who begin trying to scrape up the money on the table with haste.

Players are the color coded boxes (I tried to get them as close to your speaking colors as I could. Councilmen are in orange with their name initials inside the box. Light blue diamonds are what's left of the NPCs in the tavern and the black (hobgoblins) and red (goblins) boxes by the doors are the bad guys.

Kuranath is not quite sure what to make of the men that showed up to the meeting. A few are quick to volunteer, but don't seem overly concerned. If the threat is not so grave, then Kuranath will leave these men to it. He had not intentions of staying long near Brindol. When he is about to speak and ask the councilmen what has been occurring in the area, something happens.

An old man abruptly enters and begins to argue with the councilmen. Before they can resolve their differences, they fall or dive to the floor, and reveal a group of goblins entering the tavern. The place erupts into panic as people try to flee through the back. Kuranath spies the blood seeping through the half-elf's shirt, and his eyes track up to the hobgoblin standing over Eoffram. He charges forward with a furious bellow, drawing his greatsword in a smooth motion and bringing it to bear against the attackers.

Mandil was not expecting this attack and is annoyed that he does not already have weapons to hand. Instead, he pulls out his shield and turns his head upward: "Waukeen, these fools dare to disrupt a simple gathering in the middle of town and try to interfere with a contract and damage a place where much trade and business is conducted, I call on you to give them what they deserve.

He gestures toward the forward goblin and a flash of light seemed to envelop it. He then advanced to block one of the gaps between the tables, hoping to hem them in.

Mandil is drawing a shield, casting Sacred Flame, and moving to L9. He has not yet drawn his sword.
For Sacred Flame: N6 takes [roll0] Radiant Damage or can make a Dex save DC 13 to halve that.

Yrian looks especially surprised at the invasion, he knew human towns wouldn't be as save as elven havens, but still, getting ambushed by goblins inside a tavern was not on his plans, despite a moment to realize the situation, he quickly springs into action, diving to the wooden floor as he grabs his shield and rapier out, running forward and crouching almost as low as the table, then jumping over it to the other side, quickly reaching the invaders and slashing his rapier upwards with a proud shout "Haaah!" then raising his shield as the moonlight shines over it from outside, claiming "Let those who disturb the peace of this graceful night face me!" standing right in the way of the goblinoids would they try to rush into the tavern.

Yrian:
Yrian springs forward to face off against a hobgoblin that was eyeing Travik, stabbing forth his rapier, but the creature easily manages to bring up it's shield in time to deflect the thrust.

Hadarai:
Hadarai had been standing by the door when the foul creatures had burst in, and stabbing quickly, pierces the side of the goblin as it howls furiously. Blood begins to flow profusely from the wound and the creature obviously in much pain, turns his attention to the elf.

Mandil:
Mandil begins to cast and searing flames flash down from above and burn the hobgoblin facing off against Yrian, it screams in pain as the smell of burning flesh wafts around the room.

Kuranath:
Kuranath runs towards the hobgoblin standing over Eoffram, slashing his mighty sword towards the creature before it can finish the helpless man off. The hobgoblin barely manages to awkwardly duck and bring it's shield up to catch the blade on the edge.

Dale:
Taking partial cover around the fireplace, Dale takes out his wand and a wave of magic bursts forth into the enemies, dropping the goblin engaged with Hadarai and the hobgoblin still smoking from Mandil's fire.

Red 1 (O5) and Black 2 (N6) are down.

The hobgoblin facing Kuranath slashes at him with it's longsword, but the huge half-orc shrugs it off in his rage.

Kuranath takes 9 damage, but is halved by his rage and rounded down to 4 damage total.

The goblin in the back still standing, winds up and throws the bottle in it's hand at Dale, but it's aim is badly off and it flies into the east wall, shattering and igniting the wall on fire.

Hearing screams from behind, you look to see two hobgoblins and a goblin that have come in from the back entrance, the screams must have come from the hastily evacuating people in the back.

He then quickly darted off through the tavern and faced off against the other goblins there to try and slow them down at least. As he reached there, he drew his sword.

Kuranath's blow almost strikes true, but at the last instant the hobgoblin shakes off its shock and raises its shield, catching the greatsword before it reached its flesh. He hacks at Kuranath, but the half-orc knocks the blow to the side with his bare arm. It still cuts and draws blood, but Kuranath does not seem to notice. He trades blows with his adversary when one of the other fighting men in the tavern strikes it with a bolt of energy. Kuranath takes advantage of the opening and strikes.

If N5 is already dead, then I guess I will attack N6 (the only other one I can reach). If so, it is an automatic critical hit (4d6+5) and half-orc adds another weapon die (2d6). I would choose to knock him out instead of kill him, which I read can be done in the PHB. He would simply go unconscious and remain stable.

Angry at himself for his previous clumsy attempt at a thrust, Yrian shakes his head negatively, gritting his teeth and furrowing his brow, while using his shield as a barrier in front of him, he graciously and quickly raises to a correct and elegant pose of elven swordsmanship, before attempting another strike at the same hobgoblin, while shouting furiously in elven, ~Haah! Yrian:
Yrian stabs his rapier straight through the hobgoblin that had crumpled in front of him, it oddly doesn't cry out, but merely violently spasms for a couple of seconds before going limp.

Hadarai:
Hadarai follows suit, impaling the goblin slumped over next to him through the shoulder blade and down into it's body. It shudders slightly and goes limp, the bottle with the burning cloth in it rolling to Hadarai's feet still on fire.

Mandil:
Mandil gestures and again, searing flames flash down from above and strike the hobgoblin fighting Kuranath, it screams and burns, staggering back as it's skin blisters and it's armor begins to smoke.

Kuranath:
Kuranath swings his sword down on the hobgoblin, but as it was hit by the flames, it staggers awkwardly to the side, dodging the big half-orc's weapon merely by chance.

Dale:
Dale takes out his crossbow and the world around him seems to warp inwards for merely half a second. Without hesitation he pulls the trigger, his bolt flying out and catching the staggering hobgoblin right in the eye, exiting it's skull in an explosion of blood and brains that splatter all over Hadarai, who luckily was bent forward, stabbing the goblin in the floor. The bolt flies over his head to thud into the wall.

The goblin at the door (O7) dives for the bottle at Hadarai's feet and skillfully picks it up and throws it in one solid motion. The bottle flies over Yrian's head however, and smashes into the fireplace, setting fire to the area around it.

The hobgoblin at F4 turns and advances on the bartender, who was behind the bar with his club, attacking him with it's longsword, knocking the club out of the terrified man's hands.

The hobgoblin at D6 sees Mandil coming and goes after him, slashing with his longsword but Mandil backpeddles and steps back from the slash as it whistles past his throat.

The goblin at D4 moves forward and winding up, throws it's flaming bottle at Kuranath's back. The throw is good and the bottle shatters splashing flaming liquid on Kuranath, Yrian and Eoffram burning and blistering them somewhat, their skin and armor smoking as they beat the flames out. The floor catches fire from the liquid pooling on it.

Kuranath, Yrian and Eoffram all take 2 points of flame damage and are standing in fire.

Again, I think I got everything, but do not hesitate to point out anything I missed or might have done incorrectly. :)

Hadarai:
Hadarai catches the goblin at the door off guard as it had turned to throw the flaming bottle at Yrian and stabs it in the side, his blade driving so far into the creature it protrudes out of the other side before he pulls it free and the goblin falls lifeless to the floor.

Mandil:
Mandil slashes his short sword at the goblin and steps to the side, causing the creature to dodge back and to the side, putting it off balance making it an easier target for his allies.

Kuranath:
Kuranath takes a running leap and jumps onto the bar next to the hobgoblin harrassing the barkeep. As it raises it's longsword to attack, Kuranath brings his sword down in a low sweeping slash, cleaving the creatures head in half. It stands momentarily as if it isn't sure what just happened before crashing to the floor.

Dale:
Dale brings up his crossbow and fires at the hobgoblin that Mandil has maneuvered into position, his bolt blasting into the creatures back, through it's heart and almost flying out of the other side. The creature lurches forward under the impact of the bolt thudding into it's back and falls face first into a chair nearby before hitting the ground.

Members of the city watch come in moments later, checking on injuries and organizing people into a fire brigade to get the fires under control.

As everyone looks around, they see all enemies have been defeated. Tomas goes to check on Eoffram. "Quick Travik, go find a healer for him!"

There should be no need to go for a healer as I may be able to assist him myself. One so dedicated to his city's well being does not deserve to die for such a petty reason.

Mandil walked over to the fallen man and rested his hands upon him for a moment and then steps back. He should now be able to recover safely. Now, I think we need to continue the discussion we were having about going to deal with these beings. Where else are they operating and who are their leaders? How many of them are there and what plans and other resources do you have to beat them?

As he surveys the damage to the tavern, and the bleeding Eoffram, a throaty growl escapes his mouth. One of the elves rushes forward to heal the councilman. Kuranath closes his eyes and takes a slow, deep breath. His anger and energy begin to subside, and the grip on his greatsword loosens. The city watch appears and Kuranath opens his eyes again. He sheathes his sword and turns to the whimpering man behind the bar. Hopping down to join him, Kuranath retrieves the club from the floor and hands it to the barkeep, Here you go, you dropped this. Dale Keter, Wild Mage

With the fire seemingly under control, Dale went around the inn to recover spent ammunition. He had used two bolts in that fight, and was able to recover the one bolt that tore through a hobgoblin's heart. It was soaked in blood and gore, but was still serviceable. He used his Prestidigitation cantrip to scrub the grime off of it before he placed it back into his quiver. The other bolt was broken, half of it stuck inside a dead hobgoblin, the other half scorched by the now dwindling fire.

That done, he turned his attention towards looting the dead goblinoids. Maybe he'd find something of value (which he'd split with the other defenders), or more importantly, vital intelligence regarding the goblinoid operations. Maybe a signet or a letter or maybe even orders from a superior...

I'll spend 1 point of lay on hands to stabilize anyone around who might be dying, if there is.

Then gathering back near the councilmen, he says with a grin of satisfaction "So much for 'hiring mercenaries off of the street', hmm? You're lucky you still have a head over your shoulders, wouldn't be the case if not for these 'mercenaries'...", crossing his arms and remaining silent after that.

As you search the corpses of the creatures, you notice they have very little in the way of money, 3-4 silver apiece, 17 when all tallied up. Some of the local watch come in to make sure the fire is out and check to see that the councilmen are ok before heading back out into the town to search for any more of the fiendish monsters that might have slipped through the gates in the night.

Kuranath is lifting some knocked over chairs and tables when Eoffram stands to his feet and the councilmen begin to speak. The others that braved the goblins gather around, so Kuranath sets the chair in his hands down and walks over to join them.

..... Perhaps this is some small group out to cause mischief, or perhaps this is part of something larger. That is what we must know. We have the money to hire allies such as you, we have men to hold this town, and we will be calling on them to double our watches. But we need men such as you to leave the town, find this foe and crush it in the hole it calls home. What are your names strangers, let us get to know one another before we do business.

He listens as the others introduce themselves. The merchant, Dale, doesn't seem like much at first glance, but Kuranath saw his skill with magic. Kuranath's strength has failed him few times, but one of the times it had, an apprentice mage had saved him with magic. The arcane was a mystery to Kuranath, but he knew it was a mystery to most goblins as well, and that can be an advantage.

The elf-painter Yrian seems a mixed bad. Obviously a warrior, and skilled with a sword. But this mission seems personal for him. That may cause him to be rash. And while Kuranath doesn't consider himself an orc, he knows that many people do. He wonders if the elf makes light of Gruumsh as a slight to him. Time will tell with this one.

When the elf-cleric named Mandil offers up the longswords, Kuranath takes one. He tests its weight in his grip and flourishes it a couple of times, Serviceable, he says to Mandil, and nods his head in thanks. Another elf, and another of the faithful. He was able to heal Eoffram, and that will be useful in the days to come if they venture out together.

The elf that introduces himself as Hadarai seems skilled enough, and his proficiency with the bow will be a boon when the goblins come charging through the terrain at them.

I am known as Kuranath, and while I would sooner stay here to protect Brindol, I know the Vale better than most. If you aim to bring the fight to the goblins before more venture forth, I can lead the way.

Eoffram listens patiently to everyone in turn, smiling and obviously impressed with everyone's skill and willingness to defend the people of his town. After all the introductions are made, Tomas and Travik leave to check in with the city watch while Eoffram formally introduces himself to the group. "My name is Eoffram Troyas, and I am but one of the councilmen of Brindol, but Travik and I have been voted into primary defense positions within the council. We came up with the idea of hiring adventuring heroes after seeing several come through the town and hearing the tales they told. The council has fought us on this, insisting that we keep the matter in house, so to speak. They say we rose up and beat these creatures ourselves, and can do so again, but they do not realize that it was adventurers like yourself that led that charge and ultimately won the day for us."

Eoffram sits down at one of the scorched tables and sighs wearily, "Like it or not, we need strong young heroes like yourselves to do what we are unable to, meet the enemy on it's doorstep and crush it beneath your boots. So far, these attacks have been relatively small in scope as far as we can tell, not many deaths, and they have been focusing mainly on property damage rather than all out carnage. We are prepared to hire you five at an appropriate rate for your troubles. You have already collected a small amount of armor and weapons to keep or sell, and possibly a few coins from this lot. Undoubtedly you will find more as well in these creature's lair, should they have one. That combined with what we will pay you should be a decent wage indeed!"

Dale Keter, Wild Mage Adventurer

"Gentlemen." Dale looked at each of the other four heroes with his piercing brown eyes. "I propose an equal share of the loot if we are to work together. The remainder we can put into a group fund to cover minor expenses and supplies."

"Also, Councilman Troyas, I would like to request board and lodging and supplies as an advance on our pay. Food for us and our animals, ammunition, travel supplies, maps, and other necessities. I'd also like to examine any records related to the last invasion, maybe even talk to those who lived through it. We also need to talk to those woodsmen who may have an idea of where the goblinoids are based."

Dale Keter's Objectives

1. Get extra supplies.
2. Gather information on possible goblinoid hideouts.
3. Eat, drink, and rest to get ready for the journey tomorrow.

That wage sounds reasonable Eoffram, though I do agree with Dale as to wanting access to the information you already have. Other than that, food rest and an early start sounds good to me as well.

The cleric then turned to the rest of the party: Well, as most of us are elves, that will help with keeping watch at night. Also, it means that we don't have any money-grubbing dwarves to complicate dividing the spoils. I look forward to working with all of you, although please forgive me Kuranath if I seem obtuse at times, I have never worked with one of your race before.

Once the meeting was over, the cleric made sure that all of the swords were policed up and then prepared to go out with Dale on a quest for information.

Kuranath's brow beetles at Mandil. "Obtuse"? He doesn't know the word. He scowls, and gives a pointed look at Yrian and Mandil, Well hopefully you elves are quick learners, because our enemies, he gives one of the charred corpses a kick, won't see a difference between us when we are storming their camp.

Councilman, have you a clue as to where they may be striking from, or if they are gathering forces somewhere? Where are we setting out to?

Eoffram nods to Dale, "Your food and lodging expenses will be paid by the town, and any animals you have will be well taken care of when needed. As for the offer we make for your services, I will have to address the council and come to an agreement." Eoffram turns to Kuranath, "We will find out what information you need to know about these beasts if we can, but these attacks come most recently and we have had no information detailing these beasts in the area in a decade."

As Eoffram gets up from his chair, a huge crash can be heard from the northeast, the direction of the marketplace, closely followed by a great angry bellow the likes of which you have never heard before.

Yrian

The elf simply listen closely, with a serious stern look on his face, but nodding along and seemingly satisfied with the deal, though his mind clearly wanders about other business aside from loot and hobgoblins, as his eyes often wander off the window. As Kuranath speaks, he just scoffs, smiles wide and says in a tone of friendly joking which hinted just a bit of sarcasm "Worry not." he moves his hand forward sharply, almost poking the half-orc at the side of his stomach "Enemies are on the 'other' tip of the blade, hmm?", he raises his hand high to pat the half-orc on the shoulder as he walks by smiling...

... only to suddenly stop a few steps ahead, alarmed by the loud crash outside, followed by a horrible noise one would hear in a nightmare... No one really alerted him human towns would be like that, not at all. He freezes and turns his head over his shoulder, looking at the others for a brief moment to know what is going on, but his instincts quickly kick in, making him draw his blade once again, stare forward and stride out the door, ready to take on whatever might be coming.

"Oh, hell no..." It didn't look like Dale could get some well-needed rest just yet. Were there more monsters attacking town? "Gentlemen, shall we? After you." Dale motioned for the other heroes to go before him, as they were the fighting types and he was just a simple merchant who happened to know some magic. Besides, you didn't put your crossbowman in front of your swordsmen. That was just bad tactics.

Kuranath has half a mind to yank the elf by his black hair, but a loud crashing sound and an angry wail interrupt the thought. They all look in the direction of the marketplace. Dale motions to them, "Gentlemen, shall we? After you." Kuranath moves into action, following Yrian out the door with greatsword drawn.

Hadarai had fallen asleep at a table in the tavern soon after the fight had ended. But when he hears the crash from outside, he immediately wakes up and draws his sword, still slightly gory from the battle. "Huh... What? Obtuse? I'm awake!" he stutters out as he jumps to his feet. Though he dozed off, he still heard most of the conversation around him. Seeing that his new found companions have heard the crash and the soon followed bellow from the marketplace, he comments, "I'm sorry that I didn't get to earlier, but thank you Mr. Councilman for this opportunity. It seems that I am needed outside, so... that's where I'm going to go," he ended, still drowsy from his rest. He drew his rapier and nodded towards the rest of the people in the room before embarking through the door.

As you leave the Antler and Thistle and race down the street towards the marketplace, you hear mighty bellows from the creature and men crying out in pain. Before you get there, you slide to a stop as something big lumbers around the corner. You have heard of ogres before, but never have you seen one, let alone been this close to one. It stands ten feet tall, dressed in merely a loincloth and brandishing a large club in one hand. It has a harness locked around it's waist and over one shoulder, binding it securely to a drawn wagon, on which two hobgoblins stand holding burning casks of pitch. One of the hobgoblins reaches forward and hands a cask to the ogre and then picks up a bow lying next to it and strings an arrow. One of the city guard comes running out of a side path into the street and raises his sword against the mammoth creature before being swatted like a fly on it's club, flying a good thirty feet away and landing in a crumpled heap.

Mandil steps forward and begins to yell orders to his team mates, which seems to make the ogre mad for some reason. It slams it's huge club on the ground, lumbers forward slowly due to pulling the wagon and brings it's arm back and hurls the cask of burning pitch it was holding. Fortunately it's aim is dreadful and the cask sails over everyone's head and hits the ground behind them, erupting in flames.

The hobgoblin holding the second cask hands it up to the ogre and grabs another one and sets it on fire with it's torch. The second hobgoblin draws it's longbow and fires an arrow at Mandil which falls short and buries itself in the ground right in front of him.

Kuranath's javelin flies through the air and impales the hobgoblin preparing a new cask for the ogre as Mandil gestures and flames manifest over the hobgoblin and lance down, the creature crying out and falling off and under the wagon. The ogre moves forward, running the wagon over the hobgoblin on the ground, crushing it under the wheels as the behemoth stupidly forgets the burning cask in it's hand and brings it's club down at Yrian in it's rage. Yrian dodges to the side and shoves his shield up enough to deflect the massive weapon with a mighty clang, his hands going partially numb for a moment from the impact. The hobgoblin on the wagon fires an arrow at Yrian, but again, misses it's target badly, the arrow flying off to the side.

It slides lifelessly to the ground immediately.

As the ogre rears back it's club again to smash the pesky elf in front of him, it notices movement to the left and turns to look as Hadarai's dagger comes whistling in to embed itself to the hilt into the huge monsters eye. The huge eye pops with a spray of blood as the creature screams in rage and agony.

As Yrian withdraws his weapon a bolt of fire flies out of the second story window and streaks by Yrian's face to crash into the last five casks of pitch in the back of the wagon, setting them ablaze. Yrian turns to spring away, holding his shield as a partial barrier between himself and the wagon as it explodes into a huge ball of flame, the concussive blast throwing him all the way across the road and into the wall of the building nearby with bone crunching force. The ogre, caught fully in the blast and harnessed to the wagon, is fully engulfed in flames which ignite the cask it was holding in it's huge hand. While the bulk of their raid was attacking this side of the city, another small force came from the south, specifically attacking our hall of great valor. They have taken items we had enshrined after defeating the red hand of doom, a decade ago. This was a planned attack, to take things we won as a city, to break our will, to lower our morale. Kuranath helps Yrian to his feet, and waves Eoffram and the others over when they arrive. They are all attended to by magical healers as Eoffram relays the news about the artifacts that were stolen from the city. He watches curiously as Yrian reveals his connection to these attacks through an ornate scabbard recovered from a previous attack. After Eoffram answers some questions, the groups makes its way to the Red Door.

Once there, Kuranath avails himself of the accommodations and sits down to a hearty meal. He then gives himself a proper bath and sleeps the rest of the night away. In the morning, things commence rather quickly, as it is discovered that hostages were taken the day before during the attacks.

The half-orc growls at Mandil's insensitive handling of the news, but Dale's attempt at smoothing it over calms him somewhat. Kuranath nods his head as Yrian speaks, Please, for the sake of your people, tell us you have some idea of where they've been taken.

At Mandil's words, many members of the council begin to mutter, wondering if they have the group of adventurers they feel is right for the job. Dale's quick words and Yrian and Kuranath's genuine sincerity seem to calm them somewhat though and they get back to the business at hand.

Eoffram shakes his head slowly, "We do not know where the creatures are based yet, but during the attack last night some of our guards managed to take one of them prisoner. We have not yet got any useful information out of the creature, but we hope to be able to get it to give us the information we seek."

Tomas speaks up from a table nearby where he has been putting some final touches on a parchment detailing what the council expects. "I've drawn up an agreement here as per your elven friend there requires. We agree to pay all your personal expenses while you work for us and are based in Brindol. That includes food and lodging for you five and any animals you may have. We agree to have our blacksmiths and leatherworkers fix your armor and weapons as they may need it. Our main concern right now is first and foremost getting our people back alive. We've suffered enough losses here, we don't need any more if we can help it. Bring our people back alive to the best of your ability and we will pay you the sum of two hundred gold. Second, we want our treasures back, stolen from our museum. They aren't worth much when it comes to money, but the items stand for something to our people, the stand we took against the red hand years ago. We feel that if word gets out that they've been taken, morale in the city will weaken and decay. For each of the items you bring back, we will pay 50 gold."

Eoffram steps forward and cuts Tomas off before he can speak again, "The main thing is our people! We've lost seven to those things out there." Eoffram begins to write descriptions of the missing townfolk on another piece of parchment. "First up is Kartenix, our guard captain, he's a tall man, human, short brown hair and a beard. Next up is his son, Thurann, the boy is only eight, and looks much like his father. Next is Jalissa, an acolyte of Oghma, she's a tall and slender half-elf with long blond hair and green eyes. Then we have Sertanian, the castellan of the hall of great valor, he's an older human fellow who served as a soldier in the war against the hand years ago. Next up is Mirtala, one of the town cooks, a slender older lady, brown hair to her shoulders, very shy to outsiders. Zerriksa is one of our town elders, a human woman in her seventies, cranky doesn't begin to describe her and rumor has it she plays with dark powers, but of that, we have no certainty. Last but not least is Adronsius, he's a dwarf and also the town herbalist."

Travik steps forward with another list written on parchment, "The museum items they stole, an ornate, gilded dragoncrest helm, a ceremonial platinum longsword, a set of three shields with the Red Hand insignia, each with a charred hole near the center, a set of iron gauntlets with extensive filigree and a heraldic battle standard depicting two hands clasped in a handshake. We've managed to scrape up four healing potions from Adronius' shop for you, I wish we could do more, but that's all we can spare right now."

With your permission, do you mind if I scan the text your scribe appears to have just finished copying over there?

He spent a few moments reading it and then looked up:

Your terms and assistance sound and look more than reasonable and I will be happy to do my best to accomplish them. Since you mention a prisoner, would you also be interested in more persons to question if we brought them back with us?

The elf seemed a little more restrained in his response this time and it seemed that he had noted the reaction his words had aroused.

Regarding the prisoner, Dale replied, "Gentlemen, I'd like to talk to the prisoner before we leave. We have a serious lack of intelligence for our job at hand, and I want to know what we're up against before we go charging in, swords drawn."

As for the contract, Dale said, "These terms are generous and acceptable to me... us."

As for the townspeople, "We will bring these folks home, Councilors, in one piece."

And finally, regarding the stolen items, "We will do what we can. Hobgoblins tend to be more sophisticated than their smaller and their bigger goblinoid cousins, and would most likely take good care of the items as war trophies."

Dale will now go interrogate the prisoner, with a little bit of persuasion and a little bit of Charm Person.

The council thanks everyone for their understanding in their time of need and agree to letting Dale and anyone else talk to the prisoner to try and get some info out of him. They summon a guard to take you to the marketplace where a small stage has been hastily set up as an open holding cell for the prisoner.

Just as Eoffram said, there’s a lone hobgoblin in stocks and shackles here. His wounds from last night’s battle have been bandaged, but a number of tomatoes on the ground near him and on the surface of the stocks indicate that his treatment hasn’t been completely kind. He takes one weary look at you and says, “I ain’t saying nothin’ unless you people let me go.”

"Good morning, warrior," Dale greeted the hobgoblin prisoner. He chose to address the hobgoblin as a warrior to stoke the creature's ego and make him pliable to persuasion. "How are you holding up? When the others finally emerge, Dale beckons him with a head nod and Kuranath falls in line beside him. Dale mentions that they are going to interrogate the prisoner. Kuranath grunts, 'bout time.

A guard leads them to the marketplace, where a hobgoblin has been shackled in makeshift stocks. Kuranath stands to the side, giving the others a chance to speak with the hobgoblin. Words are not one of his strengths. He watches silently, arms crossed, with a scowl on his face.

Yrian stands just behind Dale as he speaks to the creature, the curiosity is clearly seen on his face, it was the first time he had a chance to see this monster in a "calm" environment, not in a territorial defense, ambush on the elven lands, or at the attack that day before, he stretched his neck as he could, to get a glimpse at it - a somewhat different creature, fearsome bestial features, but able to reason somehow, reason for villainy, for certain.

As the hobgoblin speaks, Yrian reaches out for Dale's shoulder, gently pulling him towards himself without turning the mage whole around, as he whispers to his ears from behind, trying his best to not let the prisioner hear his words "Strike a deal with it - he'll be free from this town, but shackled to us as he shows the way to his lair, we can decide what to do with him later.", then letting go of his companion's shoulder, stepping back again, crossing his arms with a hint of a smile on his face.

Dale Keter, Wild Mage

It seemed to Dale Keter that there was something more sinister going on than a simple smash-and-grab with a dash of hostage-taking. This prisoner's group was most likely intended to simply cause as much damage as possible and draw the town's attention away from... some other thing that wasn't clear to Dale. It also seemed to the sorcerer merchant that Merrik the hobgoblin was simply a low-level grunt and didn't get paid enough to know about the details of the operation. Still, he wanted to confer with his new party members to determine their next course of action.

Dale motioned for the party members present for the interrogation to follow him to the far end of the area where Merrik the prisoner was being held. "What do you think, Misters Yrian, Kuranath, and Mandil," he asked his companions. "Do you think he knows more than he has told? I get the feeling that he doesn't know much more than he's told us."

Kuranath snorts and drops most of his gear, keeping his sheathed greatsword in hand. He saunters past Dale and takes position beside Merrik, just outside the hobgoblin's view. It wasn't his plan to get caught Dale. Those people they took don't have much time. Ask him where he came from and where he was supposed to go after the raid. "Wait, wait, I will draw you a map to where we were supposed to meet after the attack on the town. Please don't kill me, I didn't kill anyone!"

The guards release Merrik from the stocks long enough to let him draw a crude map leading north out of the city into the mountains nearby. He tells you he has not personally been there yet himself, but had been shown a map like this many many times to drill it into his memory.

As Dale comes back to discuss with the group, his words ring sour in Yrians long ears, he looks over to the hobgoblin in disgust, waving his head negatively for a brief moment, "Spare the grunts the details, hmm?" then startling over Kuranath's sudden movement, he looks slightly surprised and amused... seems like the beast would answer beast to a more direct approach... more like the doings of his people, might be. He laughs almost silently and applauds as the hobgoblins draws the map "Splendid, friends! That is all we needed, let's set foot on the road and head there as fast as we can. No doubt there they will be prepared for us... as we will be likewise."

The elf cracks his finger joints and looks north for a moment, then drawing his sword and leaning against it while kneeling down on the dust, he closes his eyes and mutters some prayer to himself, "Great Lady, grant your guidance to our hands in saving the people from this town from suffeting any more under the vileness of those who dwell in the dark and abide by its mischiefs. Shine your bright moonlight over us and may your wisdom be ours in judging right from wrong amidst this chaos", then standing back up, eyes still closed, he draws what seems to be a crescent moon in the air with his hand, ending in a closed fist against his chest. After this, he looks over his shoulders at the others, nodding and waiting for them to act.

We're working like a well-oiled team, thought Dale Keter. These gentlemen will do well in protecting the region. "Alright, Merrik, you have been very helpful, and I am a man of my word." Dale turned to one of the guardsmen and made his request which was really more like a command. "Guardsman, I need you to go to Councilman Eoffram and tell him that Dale Keter respectfully requests that the hobgoblin prisoner be transferred from the stocks to a secure cell to await his trial. His cooperation has earned him that much." Dale made sure to let the hobgoblin, Merrik, hear his command. If he somehow survived the town's wrath, Dale thought that he might be able to use him more.

"Friends, before we go, I have to pick up some last-minute supplies at the general store. I will be back in less than an hour." Dale was going to report to his "friend," Garick, regarding the latest happenings. Well, he wasn't really going to report to him in person, just leave a message at their usual drop off point for Garick to pick up. The message, written in the semi-secret language of Halfling, would include the following:

1. The names of the party members, with a request from Dale to try and dig up any dirt on any of them.
2. The names of the kidnapped townsfolk, again, with a request to find out their secrets.
3. Descriptions of the items stolen by the raid yesterday.

"Well, this is awkward." Dale was the only one in the group who couldn't see in the dark. Humans were made for aboveground functioning during daylight, and didn't have the fancy ability to see in the dark possessed by the other common races. For now, his inability to see in the dark was a liability.

He then glanced at the hobgoblins and raised his voice: "Waukeen, if you want me to spare these despoilers of cities and not have them pay the price they justly deserve for wanton destruction of property and harming of others, do nothing. But if not, please lend the light of your justice to me thy servant.

He is moving forward to one square back and right from Yrian. He is then casting Sacred Flame on the crossbow bearer on the right who must make a dex save of 13 or take [roll0] radiant damage.

Kuranath's blood quickens when the door screeches open and he hears goblin voices. He follows his allies into the chamber, seeing two goblins before them with flails, and another two at the back of the chamber with crossbows. Yrian calls out to them, We come in the name of the people of Brindol! You have no escape! Surrender your weapons right now and we may spare your lives!

Kuranath cries out, None will be spared! as he charges forward and brings his greatsword to bear.

Move - Starting on the stairs at the very edge of the map, Kuranath moves 5 squares to stand in front of black 2.

Dale:
Dale steps into the door way on the stairs and bringing out his wand, points it at the goblin crossbowman to the left and a mote of fire streaks out and strikes the creature, it winces in pain as it tries to keep it's weapon steady.

Yrian:
Yrian runs forward and stops slightly away from the hobgoblins, raising his shield and bracing himself for the fight to come. His commands to surrender all but ignored.

Kuranath:
The half-orc charges forward and brings his greatsword down at an angle, catching the hobgoblin in front of him off guard, the weapon slicing down the creatures side and catching on ribs, cracks a few. The hobgoblin cries out in agony.

Mandil:
Raising his hand to the goblin in the back on the right, Mandil summons flames from the air to burn down on the goblin as it tries to dodge and doesn't make it. It cries out as it's flesh sizzles momentarily.

Goblins:

The goblin on the left fires back at Dale in retaliation, but the bolt flies over his head and cracks into the stone wall.
The goblin on the right can't get a good shot in on Mandil and raises it's crossbow to fire at Dale instead, catching him in the shoulder with a bolt.
The hobgoblin on the left, seeing Kuranath come charging in swings it's longsword at him but misses badly and hits nothing but air.
The hobgoblin on the right swings at Kuranath, but falters a bit with the pain in it's side, striking him with only a glancing blow.

Dale takes 5 points of damage and Kuranath takes 2.

Mandil looked at the situation and frowned: Yrian, are your honorable needs satisfied now? Dale, two on one works great so let's try it.

The cleric stayed where he was but gestured again: Waukeen, may your light shine on them as brightly as the reflected light of smelted gold in the eyes of a dwarvish craftsman.

Mandil is staying stationary but using Sacred Flame on the one on the right, ie the same one Dale targeted. Target must make a DC 13 Dex saving throw or take [roll0] radiant damage.

Yrian turns over to Mandil, just shrugs and nods, "We'll do what we have to!", steps ahead more concentrated, facing the hobgoblin defiantly and slashes his blade in a wide arc in front of him, amidst his battle shout.

Kuranath hears the click-clacking of crossbow fire, but doesn't take his eyes off the hobgoblins before him. The one on the left tries its hand at killing the half orc, but Kuranath steps out of the swing, dodging the attack completely. The one in front of Kuranath seizes the opportunity and thrusts forward. He cuts Kuranath but leaves only a shallow wound, wincing in pain from the blow dealt by Kuranath. Kuranath snarls at the pain and lashes back.

Dale:
Dale steps forward behind Yrian to gain a bit of cover from fire, aiming his wand at the goblin crossbowman in the back to the left and a bolt of fire streaks out, but misses and hit the wall with no effect.

Yrian:
The paladin steps forward, slashing his sword at the hobgoblin in front of him, who easily brings up his shield and blocks it.

Kuranath:
Kuranath stands his ground and slashes at his foe, but the hobgoblin ducks, bringing his shield under the big weapon and pushes it up and to the side, evading it's bite for now.

Mandil:
As Mandil raises his hand up towards the crossbowman that Dale was targeting, fire falls from seemingly nowhere and burns the creature as it hisses in rage.

Goblins:

Goblin 1 fires it's weapon at Yrian since Dale has moved behind him and catches him in the shoulder with a bolt.

Goblin 2 reaches over and opens the door next to it slightly and then takes aim and fires at Kuranath, but the surprisingly quick half-orc dodges to the left and avoids the bolt as it flies past and shatters against a wall.

Hobgoblin 1 swings it's sword clumsily at Yrian, who bats it aside with his shield, then steps backward five feet.

Hobgoblin 2 swings it's sword at Kuranath as he is dodging a flying bolt and catches him off guard, slicing his sword across the half-orc's chest, then steps backward five feet.

The braziers on the floor slowly begin to slide south, as a stream of fire flares from the right brazier to the left momentarily before dying down again

Yrian takes 8 points of damage and Kuranath takes 6.

Mandil sighed and glanced at the others. For the moment they looked ok but that wouldn't last long at this rate. He quickly ran down his list of options and raised his hand again:
Waukeen, it seems that this individual is singularly unenlightened as yet as to the benefits of mutually agreeing to peacably disagree. Please further illuminate his thoughts.

"Ack!", the elf bites back a curse while angrily staring at the goblins in the back, his hand instinctively reaches for the wound, quickly turning red, stained with his blood. Shaking off the pain quickly enough, Yrian reacts in time to slash at the defensive opening the hobgoblin in front of him just gave.

Dale:
Seeing Yrian take an arrow to the shoulder, Dale ducks down and focuses his fire on the hobgoblin facing the paladin, trying to help him out. Another bolt of fire belches from his wand, burning the creature badly as the stench of burned flesh permeates the room.

Yrian:
The paladin slashes at the hobgoblin as it attempts to retreat and it dodges out of the way, he then steps forward, slashing his sword at the burnt hobgoblin again catching the creature off guard, his sword biting into the creature's side as it falls to the ground.

Kuranath:
The big half-orc slashes his giant sword at his foe as it steps back and catches it in the neck, nearly severing it's head in one clean blow. So caught up in his rage, Kuranath swings again at the falling body, but his sword merely whistles through the air cleanly.

Mandil:
Mandil raises his hand up towards the crossbowman that shot Yrian and once again flames falls from nowhere to light the creature on fire, it turns and tries to run for the door screaming but the flames overcome it and it falls to the ground still smoking.

One Lone Goblin:
As the goblin watches it's comrades get cut down, it panics, not sure what to do, eventually turning to run curiously towards the door to the left rather than the partially open door behind it, unfortunately running right in between the two braziers as they stop and flare up, magical fire flashing from the right to the left, catching the goblin and burning it to a crisp on the spot.

300XP = 100XP for Mandil, Kuranath and Yrian.

Well, that was a bit of a struggle. I don't know if we want to take an hour to rest. If we want to push on, I can heal one of you. Also, Dale, could you figure out how to protect ourselves from that magic trap? I was going to search the bodies unless someone else wanted to and then check the doors for mundane traps.

Once he was finished, Mandil started checking the bodies for any gear, coins etc. He then placed his hands on whichever individual was deemed to most need healing and intoned a blessing:
Waukeen, please aid this person who is smiting those who would sooner steal than buy. His service is such that I beg you to take it into account and grant him as much health as he has taken from those who would harm your cause so that he may continue to aid it.

Once the chamber is secured, he will check the doors on the other end of the room for traps.

Kuranath impales both hobgoblin corpses, seemingly to be sure of their deaths. He flourishes the greatsword back into a proper grip and watches the lone goblin consider his fate before taking off to escape. Kuranath nearly gives chase before a magical flame erupts between the two braziers and incinerates it. Kuranath squints suspiciously at the metal bowls filled with flame, What sorcery is this? he seethes.

Does Rage end at the end of combat or does it last right up to the minute? If I can keep it for now, I will and maybe I'll get a couple of turns out of it if we run into another encounter in a nearby room. If not, then he is not seething :smalltongue:.

Yrian, how should we handle healing?

Yrian seems really paralyzed while looking at the goblin running to its death, covering his eyes briefly with his hand when the goblin goes *FWHOMP* and its ashes fill the room. Then turning over to his comrades, he directs Mandil over to Kuranath, bowing gracefully and thanking him for his healing with a brief smile and bow. Taking his glove off and pulling the arrow out while gritting his teeth in order to show no pain (in which he obviously fails after an inaudible "ouch"), the elf then conjures up a light-blue glow around his hand and with eyes closed, he touches his own wound, speaking in elven ~Grace me with your soothing light, oh Lady of the Night.~

Mandil can heal Kuranath, since we're both at 8 hp off, I'll just take half out of my pool and heal 5 on me, hoping my AC will be enough to save these 5 other points for you guys.

The elf then looks around the room suspiciously, trying to figure out how the traps work, but then turning over to Dale and raising one eyebrow, "Any ideas?".

Dale nods and steps forward towards the braziers that are slowly scraping across the floor, keeping his distance as they come to the south portion of wall in their path and after a short pause and a flashing line of flame, begin to slide back towards the north. "Well it seemed that the braziers did not start moving until the goblin with the crossbow in the back opened that door to the north. Let's see if I can do anything to stop these things."

Taking out his wand, Dale points towards the door cracked open directly north and a spectral hand appears and pushes the door closed, after which, the braziers immediately stop moving and no more fire flashes between them. Dale turns to you with a nod, "That takes care of that, now to armor up." Pointing the wand at himself, he mutters a few words and glowing armor shimmers over him before becoming transparent, then suddenly, a well of darkness opens under the sorcerer. Dale falls in with a short cry and the hole closes up as quick as it opened, leaving you very, very confused.

Breathing heavily, ready for another threat to arrive, Kuranath's rage threatens to wane as Mandil's healing touch takes away some of the aches and pain of his injuries. Kuranath's gaze snaps toward the elf, but he is able to channel his fury away from his ally, They would have heard us. We need to move!

Dale manages to piece together how to disarm the roving braziers, and does so with ease by shutting the far door. Kuranath looks at the trapped door suspiciously and says, The left door that the goblin fled toward, that's where we should go! He moves to lead the way. Dale takes the time to cast another spell, one to bolster his defenses. But when he finishes the incantation, a well of darkness opens up beneath him, and the intrepid human drops right in. Kuranath dives forward to grab hold of Dale's flailing arm but the hole closes just as soon as it opens up. Dale!

Kuranath jumps to his feet and scrambles away from the spot his comrade just stood, What happened? Where is he?!

The elf looks surprised, shocked really, as he pulled out the arrow from his shoulder, he walked forth and looked around, trying to find the mage, hoping he used some invisibility trick, but soon realizing that wouldn't be the case... "Dale?" he whispered, looking to the sides, hoping to not draw any more attention than what was already heard from the room. Yrian takes a few steps ahead, still avoiding the fires, trying to check the room the goblin fled towards.
