View Full Version : How to give clerics access to arcane spells for crafting

For wizards, by planar binding a Ghaele, you have access to almost all of the cleric spells for crafting.
How about clerics? I know that miracle grants you all arcane spells level 7 of lower... but miracle is a level 9 spell. That means you won't have access to it until level 17, so is there a way to give clerics access to some low level wizard spells like shrink item or secret chest before level 17?

First, remember the cooperative item crafting rules (DMG p.215). The spell requirements can be met though another spellcaster- so you can get a friendly wizard to cast the spell for you, or even pay an NPC to do it.

If for some reason you have no access to a friendly arcane caster, there's the Spell domain which is granted by many gods of magic. It gives you Anyspell and Greater Anyspell, which let you prepare wizard spells in your domain slots.

Edit: Planar Ally may also be useful, but may require some discussion with your DM. There are a few potential outsiders that can cast arcane spells, for instance the Couatl (9 HD, LG, casts as 9th-level sorcerer). More importantly, it is possible to call an Aasimar (or Tiefling if you're evil) wizard using Planar Ally (there's an example in the BoED).

Or you could take the Magic domain and use scrolls for arcane spells.

Thanks for telling me about the spell domain. A quick question for anyspell, does it limit you to 1 arcane spell? I need shrink item (level 3), and secret chest (level 5), so I need to use greater anyspell exclusively.

If I can only use one greater anyspell, then I guess I can use that for shrink item and then use planar ally to get a Mercane (outsider) who has secret chest as a spell-like ability. Now if someone would answer my other post "Can you choose your planar ally?" because it seems like clerics have no control who they can summon via planar ally.

It'd be awesome if it weren't for the 1/2 wizard level thing. Secret Chest (level 5) needs a level 9 wizard, which in turn requires a level 18 cleric, at which point I can use miracle >.<

I guess I might combo this with spell domain so I greater anyspell secret chest and just buy 8 scrolls of shrink item...

Regarding anyspell, remember that items take several days to craft. I don't know whether you're required to be able to cast all the spells on the same day, so you might be able to cast greater anyspell for shrink item one day, and for secret chest the next. Or if you're 13th level or higher you could prepare greater anyspell in your 7th level domain slot as well.

Regarding planar allies, I've posted in that thread.

Also, you could take both the Spell and Magic domains and do both. You could use the scrolls earlier too; you just have to make caster checks.

!!!WHERE DOES IT SAY THAT!!!
I wants to verify this!!!! If this is true then truly, all of my current problems would be solved!

edit: Also... I'll need a spellbook. Can clerics write their own spellbooks? o_o
I guess as long as the cleric successfully makes the spellcraft check, he/she can write in the spellbook as there is no mention of spellbooks being exclusive to wizards. In fact, even a fighter can write a spellbook if he has spellcraft, but just can't prepare and cast it.

Pretty sure you need to be able to cast both on the same day because in RAW you need to cast both everyday you work on the thing

You could use the scrolls earlier too; you just have to make caster checks.

I'm a little confused about this part. It says you don't need to cast the spell, just have it prepared, but I can't prepare it because it's in a scroll... so can I just possess the scroll and it will become blank during crafting or what? :s

By RAW it says through the use of a spell completion item... so I guess I need to use it.

I just need 8 scrolls of both, but I'll probably be able to cast shrink item without any problems, so guess I need to just spam secret chest.

DC for secret chest is 9+1 = 10
My caster level is... probably 5 so
1d20 + 5 >= 10 80% of the time. I like these odds.

So hopefully my DM gives me spellshops XD.

Alright so my current solutions are:
1. Go only magic domain and spam the secret chest scroll. On average I should only need 10 scrolls (this solution is great as it works in core only settings)
2. Go spell domain and use planar ally to get a Mercane to cast the secret chests

and one pending solution is...
using domain spell slots 6 and 7 to cast greater anyspell twice.

A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower level spell

Of course, some DM's may argue that the phrasing of the rules for Domain Spells in the Cleric class:

With access to two domain spells at a given spell level, a cleric prepares one or the other each day in his domain spell slot.
takes precedence over this, but I don't think that was the intention. In fact, the 3.0 FAQ agrees with me- while this answer is not in the 3.5 FAQ, I don't think the relevant wording changed:

The Player’s Handbook says that a cleric prepares one or the other of the two domain spells available to the character at each level each day. This implies that the cleric cannot prepare a lower-level domain spell in a higher-level slot. It also implies that a cleric cannot use metamagic feats on a domain spell since that would require a higher-level slot. Wizards who have specialized in a school of magic would seem to face a similar restriction. Is that what was intended?
No, that ’s not what was intended, though the wording of the rules certainly implies that is the case. Each domain slot can hold a spell only from one of the cleric’s domains, but a cleric can use metamagic on domain spells (which makes them fill higher-level slots), or the cleric can simply prepare a domain spell in a higher-level domain slot.
Specialist wizards can likewise fill their bonus spell slots with lower-level spells or with metamagiced spells, provided the spells are from the wizard’s specialty school.

Ok, thanks for all your help, really. ^_^
Please know that you have helped me a great deal and now I can go to sleep in peace! THANK YOU! Both Belkarseviltwin and ranagrande. Spell Domain if I can, if it's unavailable then magic domain.
