I've gone through the core books and the fiendish codex I & II, and I was only able to find a few eligible cohorts.
Succubus
Hezrou
Erinyes
Assassin Devil

These were the only ones with level adjustments I could find >.< (Dretches and the like not included due to their worthlessness)

Am I missing something here? List seems really small for evil characters. Get a Erinyes/Hezrou/Succubus then upgrade to assassin devil. Almost no one has level adjustments. Couldn't find an equivalent to the evil equivalent list in p.25 of Book of Exalted Deeds

I'll update this list of someone provides additional demons/devils (with proof of course XD), maybe even organize it by HD and ECL if it gets large enough (doubt it)

Dretches are hardly worthless, they're one of the lowest-LA qualifiers for Fiend of Possession (without cheese anyway).

Half fiend with savage progression for a 1 LA (Evil) outsider should count if you want PC levels. If you want a monster slap it on another creature with LA and refluff the result.

Nice list! I can't believe I missed the vrock but uh... where did you get the ECL 18? o_O
It says level adjustment +8 so isn't that ECL 8?
Bearded and chain devils are +6, etc.

I'm probably misunderstanding ECL calculation. Can you explain? :D

You are indeed misunderstanding ECL calculation. You need to read my monster handbook, link in sig.

I've read that monsters with "Level Adjustment: -" is unobtainable as a cohort. Perhaps you can teach me why :)
because from what I've read in your book, ECL is:
Hitdie + Class Level + Level Adjustment, so in my interpretation 0 class level and 0 LA means the ECL is hitdie, and nowhere on the thaumaturgist class description says LA - monsters are banned.

I think you're forgetting hit dice in your calculation.

Hitdie is right there in the quoted text... what are you saying? :s

I'm quoting a guy on this thread: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-249220.html

A Ghaele Eladrin (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/ghaele.htm), while having no listed level adjustment and is thus normally ineligible to serve as a cohort

Some guy later also says LA: - monsters are unobtainable as cohorts.

A vrock has 10 hit dice, zero class levels, and LA +8. That totals ECL 18.

Yeah, I am missing hit die from that calculation, but I was asking about the "LA: -" stuff when you quoted me :P

0 LA is entirely different from - LA. The former means you add zero to the formula, the latter means you have no idea what to add to the formula because the rules don't tell you, and in fact they explicitly tell you that creatures with LA - are not appropriate as PCs.

The reason is in the definition of level adjustment.

LA: - means "This is not for players" and players are not allowed to play as one. Cohorts somewhat fall into a gray area there and I am not 100% sure if the RAW explicitly states that cohorts need an LA. Though I am 100% sure that RAI states that they do.

Planar Cohort explicitly requires you to use the cohort's ECL. Per the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/thaumaturgist.htm):

To call a planar cohort, the thaumaturgist must cast the relevant spell, paying the XP costs normally. It takes an offering of 1,000 gp × the HD of the creature to convince it to serve as a planar cohort, and the improved ally class feature can’t be used to reduce or eliminate this cost. The planar cohort can’t have more Hit Dice than the thaumaturgist has, and must have an ECL no higher than the thaumaturgist’s character level -2.
