PF Soulknife Question

I have read the the SRD of the DSP Soulknife up and down and I'm still not sure: Is there a limit to how long your mind blade stays out? Why can't you just put it in a sheath and carry it unless you need to reform it to a different damage/enchantment type? If you can do that, please tell me. Thanks in advance.

1: As long as you need.
2: I suppose it depends on how it's fluffed, but why would you want to? It's not like it's faster to take it out of a sheath than to summon it up again. Plus, as I recall, it's described as vanishing when it leaves your hands with a long enough delay to be useful for throwing, when appropriate by bladeskill.
