In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

Someone needs to drive the wagon, no animal handling skill required. Also please give me a marching order. Info: The cart is moving at a slow pace.

Osrik - 13hp (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=45865)

"I don't like this. Too warm for a real mountain."

Osrik sits at the front of the wagon, reins in one hand and shield at the other. He seems calm, almost relaxed on the surface, but looking closely, you can see his eyes darting back and forth to the sides, and sometimes even up into the sky.

Stealth (for the cart): [roll0]
Not sure what mod to add to this, +1 from wisdom for animal handling? In any case, PHB allows stealth checks for slow-moving land vehicles, and I'm proficient, for whatever that's worth. I guess if any would-be robbers are listening for the cart rather than actively watching the road, I might keep it quiet enough to pass by unnoticed.

Also, if possible, I'd like to keep my shield equipped while driving the cart. If I'm going to be a sitting duck, may as well be a well-armored duck. 18 AC with the shield, 16 without.

Mika - 10 (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=27439)

Shifted awake from a morning bump in the trail, her eyes blinking to bring the world into focus. An early morning chill hung in the air, but the Druid seemed happy to start creating a small meal of dried meats and berries as a snack.

Mika sat working near the edge of the canvas, watching the world slowly appear then disappear behind them. The trail seemed to go for days behind them, but it only was about a two day trip. Mika's eyes shifted towards the supplies they were shipping, before she gave a quick smile to the other elf and tiefling. The trip had been pleasant enough and although she was new to dealing with other species, she seemed to enjoy the comradey that the other three provided.

"The trail seems very quiet today." She said and looked up to the other two for a moment and suddenly offered a strip of beef covered in a crushed berry glaze, "I hope this is nourishing, tiefiling." Her smile didn't fade until after she sat back, "I've yet to gather your names, mine is Mika Camino of the Balance." She cut another three strips of beef and applied the glaze to it. With another offer to the High Elf, Mika would then make her way in the cart to the driver, offering him a cut of meat.

Elocin - High Elf Fighter - 13/13hp (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=46950)

Ah dwarves... as true to their storied selves as ever, she thought. Elocin had had little to do with any but her fellow elves most of her life and it was refreshing to witness first hand the differences other races exhibited in daily life, she wasn't too sure of the tiefling that accompanied them, spawn of the marriage between mortal flesh and demons, the texts she had read posited that they could never truly be free from the influence of their cursed parentage. Though she was sympathetic as well, it was their parents crimes that had brought them into this world, not their own. Still, she would keep a cautious eye out for trouble.

Walking beside the cart the replacement crossbow, given to her after her longbow was stolen, resting lightly on her shoulder a case of bolts ready and fixed within easy reach at her thigh, she kept a watchful eye on the path ahead. She hadn't felt safe since the robbery and didn't want to take any chances in this less cultivated area of land.

Accepting the proffered meal and smiling lightly in thanks, Elocin tilts her head and examines Mika Camino silently for a couple of seconds then starts to introduce herself in elven, "<My thanks. I am Elocin Meliamne of->" she blushes remembering the others of the small group might not speak her language. Clearing her throat she starts again, this time in common, "I am Elocin Meliamne of Cormanthyr and Myth-Drannor. I am curious as to what it is that has been found in Phandalin? Our employer seemed quite excited to be started."

Many thanks, lady elf replied Gaius with a grin, accepting the offered jerky. For future reference, though, I don't have any abnormal dietary needs

Based off his admittedly short interactions with the two, Gaius suspected that neither of the elves had spent any appreciable time around tie flings (or non-elves), and found their naivety (which had been unmarred thus far with open hostility) amusing. To be completely honest, he had found the whole journey thus far enjoyable, and was looking forward to the easy, legitimate paycheck that would be waiting for him at the end of the road.

Offering a slight nod to both of the elves, Gaius continued I am called Gaius, pleasure to formally make both of your acquaintances. As for what our fair employer has found, I can only suspect that it is worth more than forty gold. Glancing up towards Osrik, Gaius asked Master dwarf, have you seen anything of note?

Osrick chuckles to himself and shakes his head. "History, eh? Well, ye shan't be disappointed, lass. It takes more than a 'simple mine' to hold a Rockseeker's interest. There'll be much history to write down, I can tell ye that much."

Osrik shifts in his seat, causing his armor to clack and clatter as he sits up even straighter than before and peers around him and up into the sky. Something about this place feels wrong, and it's not just the warm weather. More quietly, he says to himself, "Aye, much history to be written. One way or another."

The Druid smiled as she leaned back and toyed with her wand while she chewed the delicious berry and meat snack. Her eyes would watch her new found friends with interest. She didn't carry the stigma towards her redskinned ally that the others in the city carried. She looked towards the front, "Have you come from a great mountain Master Dwarf?"

The Druid's attention caught her ally's tense attitude and she shifted to a more attentive posture, "I shall join our friend." Mika shifts though the cart and around the supplies moving though the front canvas and looks out onto the trail.

The warlock cocked an eyebrow at his companions - their slight change in demeanor caused a slight shiver to run down his spine. Shifting his grip on his rod, he swept it up, resting it on his shoulder, and meandered closer to the wagon.

History recording can be quite interesting. History making sometimes involves a bit too much bloodshed for my taste

Doing his best to keep a nonchalant air, Gaius continued Have any of you ever been to Phandalin before? I don't mind getting paid for a few days walk, but I really haven't anything flattering about the place.

About an hour after mid-day, as your group comes around a bend in the trail, you spy two dead horses sprawled in the middle of the trail. The corpses are blocking the path roughtly fifty feet in front of your current location . Each has several black-feathered arrow sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Tch. Either these bandits are too cowardly to fight a ready foe, or they're incompetent enough to leave bodies lying about to tip off their prey. Either way, a cowardly, incompetent arrow is as deadly as any.

As it becomes clear that there is no immediate threat, Osrik lowers his guard and picks up the rest of his weapons, still keeping his shield and a javelin at the ready. Turning to the rest of the group, he continues, "You two stay here, where it's safe. I'll take a look around to make sure there's no cowardly bandits hiding in the woods."

Nothing? she wonders not finding any movement ahead of her. If she was going to try get closer she'd feel much safer with the shield to protect her, shrugging off her pack while she exchanges her crossbow for her shield, maybe it was her vantage point that was wrong, maybe there really was nothing to worry about and this had happened days ago. That thought going through her head makes her examine the dead horses a bit closer, looking for wet blood or anything to indicate that this was a recent kill.

Her shield in hand, she then starts to creep forward along the ridge line, closer to the dead beasts hoping there was nothing to find, but that the new location would let her find it if there actually was. This would be alot more effective if i wasn't dressed in all this metal, she worries angrily at the reminder of her stolen armor when her chainmail clinks softly in time with each step.

Turning around, Gaius peered back along the path, checking to see if anyone was moving up on their rear. The bandits, if that is what they were, may have shown incompetence by leaving the bodies of the animals on the road, giving up part of their element of surprise, but it could just as easily be a ploy to ensure that they stopped delayed at this point of the road. That said, they would still likely need to move the dead animals to move on, and a moments investigation could shed some light on the situation.

Steel yourselves, bandits do not live long if they are this incompetent, and a corpse that large works as well as a boulder when trying to stop the progress of a wagon. Any idea if the two horses belong to our employer and his guard??

Your search of the goblin bodies yields 9 copper pieces, two servicable, albiet shoddily made, sets of leather armor. One set of of singed leather armor with burn marks on it, two crudely made scimitars and wooden shields, two rough shortbows, and roughly 2 dozen arrows. There are no dicernable markings or other notable possession on the corpses.

Your investigation of the area confirmss that the horses have been dead for just over a day. On closer inspection of the area near the discarded empty map case you see signs where two human sized persons were possibly dragged away into the northern forest.

Elocin is successfull at moving the dead horses from the trail by pulling them away with the oxen.

Mika accessed the arrow and quickly set to working it back out. When it slipped free she quickly wrapped a salve covered leaf bandage over it, "This will help you forget the pain." She smiled as she squeezed the leaf tight over the wound. When the wrap was finished Mika hopped off the cart, watching the oxen drag the horses to the side, "Those are clearly our patron's horses, but where is our patron and his friend?" If the party chooses to take a short rest, as proposed by Osrik, you can roll up to as many hit dice (of the type(s) you have levels in) and restore that dice plus your constitution bonus to your HP.

Example: Osrik, Dwarven Paladin would roll 1d8 and add 3 to the result. Restoring lost HPs up to, but not exceding, his maximum. 8/13 +5 = 13/13

This ability can be used as long as you have hit dice left (you have 1 at level 1 and gain one for each level) and those dice are returned to you after a long rest (8 hours).

Goblin 2 is startled by Mika's fire bolt and watches his ally fall, burning, to the ground. The goblin takes off running for the cave, shouting loudly.

"We be attacked!"

Gaius releases the stroed magical energy from his rod, hitting the goblin (goblin 2) a grazing shot across the front of its thigh (-2 hp).

Elocin takes aim and burries a bolt into the goblin's shoulder (-6 hp). The goblin yells even louder if possible and continues into the cave mouth, disappearing from sight.

Osrik throws a javelin at the running goblin, hitting it in the back (-9 hp) just before it makes it to the cave. The goblin falls to the ground dead.

Mika runs into the opening, following the goblin in a flurry. Her wand hand ignited a puff of flame in her hand. She cursed in elvish as he moved to gain cover into the cave. Her eyes spotted a burst of energy skim the goblin's leg, while a feathered bolt hit his shoulder spinning him around. The javelin streaked downward in an vicious arc just as it was forced to turn, catching it with his breastbone. His small form arching back and squealing in pain, before falling silent. Her hand slowly flared down as she moved to the edge of the thicket and waved her shield, speaking in elvish, "Well Done."

"They have guard dogs. Quickly, we might be able to get past without them yowling," she whispered back to the others before starting forward herself.

Tracing the path they've taken, he realizes that if they turn left again, they will be heading towards the face of the mountain, while the path to the right most likely leads further in. It was just a guess, but the pat to the left should end in a dead end. If they fight the goblins there, they would have nowhere to run, and likely no friends close enough to help them.

Osrik's strike hits the goblin squarely in the chest, breaking several of the goblin's (goblin 3) ribs (-8hp). The goblin shrieks in pain.

Suddenly a slightly larger goblin appears at the top of the escarpment, with what appears to be a very roughed up human male who is fading in and out of conciousness at his feet. With his scimitar at the man's throat, the goblin speaks in broken common, "Stop! No more fight or da humie dies!". The remaining two goblins take on defensive postures... awaiting the groups actions. The one that was just hit by Osrik spits a glob of blood onto the floor by the dwarf.

She wasn't actually sure if the almost battered looking human would be any value to anyone if he didn't get his wounds looked at soon anyway.

"What do we care about a human?" she says attempting to sound haughty indicating their demi-human group with a flick of her shield and stepping sideways, placing one of her booted feet lightly on the back of a unconscious goblins neck. "Though... It would be a shame if you killed him, then we'd have no reason to keep your family here alive."

Osrik's charge and attack catch the goblin hiding behind a stalagmite off guard. The goblin tries to fend off the dwarf's hammer with its bow, but fails. The hammer blow crushed the goblin's skull (-7 hp). It spasms once before sliding to the ground, dead.

Both spells hit the goblin (-10 hp) in the back. It falls to its knees, then to the floor as it croaks out its warning one last time.

As the goblin falls, you can take in the room it has fled into. A medium sized chamber about 30 by 30 feet. You don't look around it much, as the most prominent features of the room are the two goblins armed with swords and shields and a wolf, which looks considerably bigger then the starved specimens you came upon bellow. But your eyes are immediately drawn to the towering goblinoid standing by the wolf, wielding a wicked looking morning star and shield. The goblinoid yells out to you, "Klarg, will make a throne from your bones! Ripper, attack!"

[spoiler=for Osrik and Elocion]
You witness your companions attack the last goblin. But then you witness the surprise that registers on their faces. You aren't sure what it is they are seeing, but it can't be good.

Both goblins watch as their fellow falls to the floor. They scream in rage as Klarg shouts. They both charge Mika, who they saw fell their fellow goblin. The first goblin (goblin 1) swings it sword at her and scores a hit on the druids thigh (-3 hp)as Mika is still in a bit of shock from seeing the bugbear. The second misses as Mika comes to her senses and brings her shield to bear, diverting the blow harmlessly away.

Osrik and Elocin see the goblins come from around the bend ahead and attack their friends. They aren't aware of any other enemies...but they are pretty sure two goblins didn't cause the shock they saw just a moment ago.

Elocin's bolt strikes the goblin square in the temple (-12 HP). The goblin falls to the floor without even making a sound.

Next the bugbear moves forwards and attacks Gaius. Klarg swings his morningstar in an arc, connecting with Gaius' ribs (-11 hp). A sickening cracking sound echoes forth, as Gaius is knocked sideways by the blow to land on the cavern floor. Gaius lands on the floor and lays there breathing irregularly, a wet cough that trickles blood from his mouth.

Osrik and Elocin now see what caused the look on their friends faces.

Seeing his friend fall, Osrik rushes forwards, places his hand on his friend's chest, and whispers a quiet prayer as wispy trails of light wash over Gaius, closing his wounds and returning color to his flesh. With his friend out of immediate danger, he brandishes his hammer and shield at the bugbear, taunting him. "Why din ya try that on me, yah bastard!?"

Move towards Gaius and the Bugbear, 1 HP of healing on Gaius, taking him up to 1 HP.

Giving Mika a quick glance to make sure she wasn't wounded, a despairing look passes over Elocin's face before it was replaced with anger. That devious damn goblin! He never mentioned that Klarg wasn't a little green-skin or had a huge pet wolf, and the way they were tearing into the rest of the group made it look like they might be lucky to get out of here alive. Not a particularity devout elf Elocin nevertheless found herself silently praying as she aimed a shot at Klarg's head, <Corellon, Oghma. Help us! Don't let these hideous goblins gnaw on our bones.>

See the OOC thread for my thoughts on pulling Osrik away. Also note that Gaius is currently not beside Ripper, nor does he have anything blocking his line of sight.
