In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

Someone needs to drive the wagon, no animal handling skill required. Also please give me a marching order. Info: The cart is moving at a slow pace.

Hader, 12/12

Hader has Inspiring Leader, so once per short rest he can give you all 3 temporary hit points. So, consider yourselves inspired!

Walking beside the wagon, Hader breathed deeply of the fresh air, took a large bite from his hunk of cheese, and smiled. Since coming to Neverwinter, he had been engaged in study with the clerics of Lathander for longer than he'd planned. They had had many questions about his manifestation of divine abilities, and he had been no less determined to get answers. Nevertheless, it was fine to be out in the open again, feeling the sun beat down on him, and the breeze whistle past, bringing a whiff of horse now and then which was not unpleasant.

"I think this is likely to be a safe journey," he called suddenly. "It's far too lovely a day to contemplate wicked deeds. If there are bandits about, I feel they must stay home and collect bouquets of flowers for their sweethearts! It would certainly be the wise choice. I don't know about you all, but this crisp air is making me feel as though I had the strength of ten men."

Hader had had little time to get to know his new compatriots, but they seemed decent folk. He sensed pain and loss from most of them, and much anger from at least one, but those feelings were only the symptoms of a loving heart that's been wounded. So Hader believed. He longed to connect with the decency in other folk, which, he had to admit, led him to speak during time that should otherwise pass in comfortable silence.

Kalaham peers out into the Triboar Trail. The clear difference between High road and here puts him a bit on edge.

Kalaham glances at Hader. "Hader, while I admire your positive outlook on life I would not let my guard down. Bandits care nothing of flowers and smiles. Only your blood on their blade and your gold in their pockets." Kalahams teeth clunch at the thought of it. "And lets not get started on the creatures that wander this land. When I was out with my platoon once we got a little cocky and relaxed on a day just like this." Kalaham looks off into the distance, thinking back to his days during his time serving. "We were on a supply run, should have been routine. We were only looking out for bandits and the like at the time. Didn't even see the Kobald troupe sneaking up on us. Before we could make a move two in my group had a javelin coming out of their chest." Kalaham narrows his eyes. "Needless to say, that beautiful day turned red quick. A necessary lesson for travel it seems." He then curses under his breath in dwarven. "Damn Kobalds."

Kalaham tightens the reigns of the cart and looks to see if anything lies in wait. He warns the others "You can never be too careful"

About an hour after mid-day, as your group comes around a bend in the trail, you spy two dead horses sprawled in the middle of the trail. The corpses are blocking the path roughtly fifty feet in front of your current location . Each has several black-feathered arrow sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Without taking his gaze off the horses and his surroundings he addresses Hader and the party. "It's hard to think this was an accident." Kalaham looks to the steep embankment on either side of the trail. "This isn't good... Everyone ready yourselves." He then pulls his sword from his sheath and ready's his shield. Kalaham looks out to his surroundings trying to discern if anything lies in weight. "It would be wise to take heed of our surroundings before continuing forward. "

Your group is surprised as 4 goblins emerge from the woods. Two from eaither side, north and south.

Two of the goblin fire arrows as the other two rush those nearest to the dead horses...

The first goblin (goblin 2) fires an arrow, which streaks towards Hader and lodges into the paladin's thigh (-3 hp), causing him clench his teeth in pain.
The next goblin (goblin 3) rushes at Ricroar and takes a wild swing, missing the nimble teifling, who sidesteps the goblin 's blow easily.
The third goblin (goblin 4) also takes aim at the distratcted Hader, firing at the paladin's exposed back scoring a perfect shot right in the middle of his back (-8 hp), as the arrow pierces the chainmail armor. Hader screams in agony as the arrow tears into his back, nicking his spine and lodging into his rib cage.
The final goblin moves towards Kalaham and attacks the fighter with it's scimitar. Kalaham is able to narrowly dodge the blow.

The arrow sinks into Halder's shoulder (-3 hp) causing the paladin to momentarily fall to one knoee before recovering to his feet. Hader is now breathing heavily, taking great gulps of air and wincing in severe pain with every breath. Blood is running freely from his three wounds. The goblin (goblin 2) retreats back into the woods and out of sight.

The goblin that had run towards Ricroar steps into the tiefling and swings his scimitar again, cutting the tiefling's thigh(-3 hp).

Goblin 4 takes aim at Kalaham as it sees the paladin go to a knee. The arrow puches through Kalahams chainmail into his left shoulder (-5 hp), before he can bring his shield to bear, causing the rough fighter to curse the goblin archer.

Hader tries to regain his feet, but feels the shooting pain from his injured spine. Though he wishes to leap into battle despite his woulda, he admits the severity of the goblin's lucky shot.

He struggles over to one of the dead horses and goes prone next to it, hoping to benefit from the cover it grants. He begins channeling divine energy through his hands to heal his damaged spine, pulling out the arrow as the worst of the damaged flesh knits itself back together (4hp). He deserves some of his divine energy for emergencies. If another ally were to fall, Hader would not be caught having wasted all his gift on himself.

The blade cuts deep into Rocroar's abdomen (-5 hp), the tiefling drops his weapon, as both hands go to his wounded abdomen. Goblin 2 slinks back into the forest as Ricroar clutches the wound.

The other goblin archer (goblin 4) seeing the tiefling helpless, draws back an arrow and lets it fly at the severley wounded tiefling. The arrow thuds into Ricroar's chest (-7 hp), knocking the staggered teifling flat onto his back. The goblin archer laughs with malicious glee as the tiefling falls. Goblin 1 grins wickedly at Kalaham afte it deflects his attack. It then cuts in low with its scimitar, the curved blade arching under Kalaham's shield and opening a gash (-4 hp), just above Kalaham's knee, but bellow the chain mail hauberk. Kalaham takes the arrow to his leg and continues forward menacingly at the goblin. He brings up his sword and shield and strikes down at the disgusting thing.

Kalaham's blade connects with the front of the goblins skull. He drives it through its face and down to its chest, slicing the thing open. Kalaham kicks it's lifeless body off his blade and spits down at it, cursing it dwarven "Back to hell with you!"

Congratulations! Combat is over, but your allies aren't out of danger yet. I'll give you guys one shot at stabalizing Ricroar before he has to roll his final save.

Searching the goblins turns up 2 crude scimitars, 2 shoddy wooden shields, 2 bent short bows, about 2 dozen arrows, 9 copper pieces, 2 ruined leather vests, and 2 rough leather vests.

Kalaham finishes collecting what he could salvage from the dead goblins. He walks over to Valken "Listen, I think we should take a short rest here and see if these guys come to by then. If not we can move out and see what lies ahead." Kalaham glances over at the dead horses. "If that is alright with you why don't you start making camp and I'm going to go see what I can determine from the dead horses. Our employers had to come through here, hopefully they made it safe but if not..." Kalaham pauses and stares off "I shudder to think what happened." He then turns and begins in the direction of the dead horses to investigate.

Kalaham looks at the dead horses to determine where they came from. He searches for tracks to see if there are any survivors. He searches the dead horses to see if there is anything of use on them as well. Depending on what he finds close to the horses he would expand his search a bit around the horses.

He then heads back to set up camp for a short rest. Pulling the cart close to one side of the embankment to prevent another ambush. He will share his findings with Valken and the party as they wake up. If they don't wake up in the hour or so Kalaham suggests waiting the extra time till they wake up.

Kalaham notices numerous tracks that could only belong to goblins and what appears to be 2 larger beings that appear as if they were dragged. The tracks end at the edge of the northern forrest. Going a bit further, he finds a worn foot trail that leads in a northeastern direction.

The horses themselves have nothing, save their saddle bags, saddles, and tack, which you could removed and place on the wagon, if you wish to do so.

Valken and Kalaham spend an hour moving the dead horses from the trail and resting, while deciding what to do next. Your companions are still unconcious.

Refreshed and ready to go Kalaham recants the information that he found back to the party. About how he noticed numerous tracks belonging to goblins. He shows them the drag marks that end at the edge of the northern forrest. He also expresses his finding of a worn foot trail that leads in a northeastern direction. Kalaham suggests that the bodies belong to their employers and if the party wants their money they should probably save the two.

Lowmoan

Hader agrees.

"These men may or may not be our employer and his escort, but whoever they are, if they are alive, they need our aid. After our encounter with these beasts I would leave no man to their mercy, for they have none."

"Another thing. I would not care to be caught unawares in battle again."

Hader's hand goes to his side, healed, but still painful from his near-fatal arrow wound.

"One of us should act as a scout. If more goblins watch the paths ahead, then perhaps their eyes will not be on the trees."

Valken hides the carts and ties the animals up in an area where they should be fine for some time.

The group begins to follow the goblins' trail. After about 15 minutes Ricroar stops the group and points out a simple snare trap in the trail. The group quickly disarms the trap.

Further down the trail the group discovers another trap. The trap is a 10ft by 10ft pit that is 10 ft deep. The group uncovers the trap and continues onward...

Following the goblins' trail, you come across a large cave in a hillside. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.

How would your group like to proceed?
