Templates for a dog

so i'm playing a game next week as a ranger starting at lv 3. and i was thinking of buying a riding dog (i'm a halfling) and was wondering if there was any templates like Warbeast. The state bonuses and i love how i can just train any animal with this so my question is are there any other templates like this?
Other inherited templates are welcome but i am really interested in the 'Trainable' ones.

Nooooot really, no. There's not really any trainable templates besides warbeast. If you make the dog your animal companion at level 4, then it'll get some decent bonuses, but past that....

On the other hand, if your DM ever sends were-creatures at you....A werewolf dog would be amusing and potentially quite powerful :smalltongue:

Except that the Warbeast template is more or less include in the riding dog stat. The riding dog is basically a dog with the warbeast template and a few differences.

The Magebred template is for animals. The Dark and Shadow templates are usable on animals. They all are pretty good.
Spellwarped creature too, but the LA is +3.

Woodling makes them plant-like without making them into plants and gives some SLAs based on charisma, IIRC.

Greenbound is a more extreme version that just makes them into a plant, so make sure not to mix those up.

But yeah, you can't train a preexisting non-warbeast creature as a warbeast, that's a misinterpretation. What you can do is buy a warbeast, and then train it using the same DCs you would use to train the base creature. And as mentioned, a riding dog is already a "war creature" and thus doesn't qualify.

The confusion over Warbeast continues to befuddle me, but it's largely down to WotC having totally botched or neglected their updates in the edition-revision turnover. *sigh*
