If so, what are they best at, class- wise?

If you're using the Dragon Magazine update that reduces their level adjustment to +0, the sparrows are pretty excellent for caster classes that don't need verbal or somatic components such as Warlock and Psion. Flight and Tiny size are both very excellent advantages starting at level 1.

If you're not using the Dragon Magazine update that reduces their level adjustment to 0, but have access to LA buy-off, then see above.

If you're not using the Dragon Magazine update, and don't have access to LA buy-off, they're not especially good.

it depends on what you actually want to do. as mentioned in the handbook, sparrow hengeyokai are a popular choice for warlocks.

since there's like a dozen different kinds and all give different stat bonuses, there's a lot of variance on what they're good at.

Where can I find these variants?

Variance. Between the original ones.

Anyway, Sparrow is generally great because it's very hard to make a character that small normally, and there's a pretty large amount of stuff out there (google the Other Killer Gnome) that can key off of that.

Badger Hengeyokai has a native burrow speed at LA +0, and is thus good for Spring Attack builds and Burrowing Power Psions.
