Just got to level 2 diviner wizard; what are some tips and tricks through level 5?

Actually I was trying to think of the best spell to force a low roll... I'm thinking charm person.

Diviner is pretty much the only class that can use Magic Jar relatively safely. On days when you might die, don't cast it.
