A PC in the game lost his memories from falling into the River Styx. I can't seem to remember the various ways in the 3.5e rules to regain lost memories. I think there was a Psionic power that did this but I don't remember which it was.

What are all of the various ways via spells/powers (or others really) that would return a characters memories back to him?

since his friends will know what memories they want to restore (or at least broad strokes) a casting of mindrape or programmed amnesia (depending on their politics) will do the job.

since it's an instantaneous effect, it can't be dispelled or removed with remove curse/break enchantment/etc, so only a new spell effect will do it.

psychic chirurgery, which is what you're thinking of does not restore erased or deleted memories (fluff) but it does do everything else (skills, feats, powers, etc)

Modfiy memory, the core 4th level bard spell can do it, I think (5 minutes only per casting, though).

They say that people's sense of smell is closely tied to memory so using prestidigitation to conjure a bunch of smells under his nose and see what comes to him.

Was it realy Styx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styx)? It's supposed to be Lethe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethe) that wipes away memories. Styx is for binding - that's where Achilles got his unbreakable skin.

If you're a player, then you'll need to ask the DM how to go about fixing it (by way of Knowledge checks - probably either Religion or The Planes), as the effect is reasonably clearly homebrewed. Welcome to the wonderful and terrible world of the side-quest.

If you're the DM, you get to make something up. Try reading through the entry for Mnemosyne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnemosyne) - it seems she presides over a pool that you'll very much want....

Thanks guys, that gives me a start to work with. I never knew of that Bard spell. It is only 5 minutes worth of memories but I could use that to keep up with the intrigue.

Nope, it's a Planescape game and the D&D version of the River Styx saps your memory away (DC 17 save as per the 3.0 Manual of the Planes). I'm the DM and it is definitely not a homebrew effect. It was the player's idea to have amnesia and he let me write the backstory for it. So he's learning more about who he is and the party just found out his real name last session. I was surprised by how everyone was very interested in this (not just the one player) and they may eventually decide to go on a side quest to help this guy out.

Thanks, that reminded me about some planar locations that can be used to restore memories. Now I just gotta jog my memory on what/where they were.
