Due to metamagic they are very good damage dealers. How are they for buffing or cursing?

Terribad. Unlike older editions, they don't get the spell spam they once had. Limited spells + lack of resources is just worse all around than the wizard who can customize his buff list to the task.

They have one thing going for them and that's multiclassing. They make excellent Paladins, Warlocks, and Bards.

Sorcerers are very, very good at Face skills, almost as good as a Bard. Both have high CHA and can cast Enhance Ability (Eagles' Splendour), but a bard has the edge due to Expertise.

Great. Metamagic lets you do things like duplicate buffs or charms (Twin spell), or cast enchantments or illusions (charm, etc) in public (subtle spell).

Best buffers in the game. Haste twinned is fantastic. Best buff at the best time (around 5th level).

Due to their high charisma and access to persuasion, intimidate, and deception, they are often good face people, spokespersons, or con-artist type characters. With charming type spells this is often helpful.

Their access to arcana, religion, and investigation can make them a good knowledge person or investigator if you don't have a wizard or knowledge heavy bard in the party. Can also be useful for identifying creatures and giving you their weaknesses.

Besides damage dealers, they do have a fair number of defensive and buffing type spells which can be applied on others. With font, they can be fairly good at buffing. Making the entire party invisible is likely easier for them than say a wizard who has to use more highly level slots. The ability to use meta-magic to extend or twin spells can be useful for this.

The meta-magic feat subtle spell makes them useful for casting spells in social situations -- charms, detects, etc. -- without being noticed.

The meta-magic feat heighten spell can be extremely powerful in save-or spells... such as blindness, suggestion, hold monster, etc.

Dragonic bloodline gives them some AC and more hit points. This may make them slightly better than wizards if caught in melee, in dual-class combinations, using racial weapons (or feat weapons) in combat. Alternately they may be able to take a few more minor hits from ranged weapons or spells.

Short answer, anything they learn spells for. With metamagic they are the best casters in the game at the few spells they know. Damage is a popular choice because it's easy to use and applicable in a number of situations.

They have a reduced spell list compared to the wizard (wizards have 214 spells and sorcerers have 130 spells) and it mostly loses utlity spells.

Looking at 1st lv spells they drop

Alarm
Find Familiar
Grease
Identify
Longstrider
Protection from Evil and Good
Tasha's Hideous Laughter
Tenser's Floating Disk
Unseen Servant

So basically most of the OOC spells (they do get good skills instead though)

Edit: realised this post was better without the quote since it wasn't directly replying to the quoted post.
