Just wondering if the paladins 10'' aura fallows the same guidelines that the reach weapons do in the exaple here (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat/space-reach-threatened-area-templates)

I had a player use the idea that movement doesn't exactly represent distance since every other corner movement adds 5"

Logically it could make sense but it just doesn't feel right.

_ O O O _
O O O O O
O O X O O
O O O O O
_ O O O _
This would be the right range for his arua if i'm not mistaken

O O O O O
O O O O O
O O X O O
O O O O O
O O O O O
He seems to think this is the aura range.

You graphic is correct.

Aura of courage
At 3rd level, a paladin is immune to fear (magical or otherwise). Each ally within 10 feet of her gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against fear effects. This ability functions only while the paladin is conscious, not if she is unconscious or dead.

All we need to know then is what is ''within 10 feets'' of the paladin. So if he could move there in 10 feets, then it's 10 feets. (Including the 2nd corner square limitation).

Finally, make sure you don't confuse it with a 10 ft radius, like they are calculated for spells. Spells emanate from an intersection of squares (the corner), while auras emanate from a square(each sides of the square). (Or many squares for a larger creature).

10 ft radius (the middle is the starting point) (12 squares total)
XOOX
OOOO
OOOO
XOOX

10 FT movement/aura (Exactly like yours) (18 squares total) (the difference is that the player, at the center, is the starting point, and expands the aura)
XOOOX
OOOOO
OOPOO
OOOOO
XOOOX

Finally, here's some candy for that player that would like a larger aura:

Spell:
Widen Aura (http://www.dxcontent.com/SDB_SpellBlock.asp?SDBID=1971)

PrC:
Inheritor's Crusader (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/i-m/inheritor-s-crusader)

Aura distance, just like anything else remotely similar, is approximately circular.
Your example is correct, his version is not.

I had a player use the idea that movement doesn't exactly represent distance since every other corner movement adds 5"

And he has a better idea to approximate non-grid movement with a square-grid?

Alternating 5ft./10ft. when moving diagonally actually winds up being fairly accurate for most "game relevant" distances. It mostly only suffers for very low and very high numbers (5ft. is borked, >100ft. gets a little squirrely).

Auras, spreads, cones, lines... they all work better in hexes:
