I was looking through the monster manual for a bit, and I wondered, out of all the possible player races (ignoring templates and racial hit dice), has the highest Level Adjustment?

Try the ELH. It's gotten some of the highest LA's in the game.

Actually, the ELH has one of the smallest LAs, with the Atropal having like -25.

I'm confused...in my ELH the Atropal don't have a listed LA. How are you getting -25?

Many of the monsters in the ELH have an ECL at the beginning of the monster chapter. Most of the listed ECLs are less than the monster's HD, which means that they have negative LA.

The Sillit Nerra from the Fiend Folio has +18 LA.

On page 156, the ECL of various monsters in the book are listed. ECL=LA+RHD. Some of the monsters have ECL<RHD. This would require LA to be negative.

Attropal:ECL 44=66RHD+LA. LA=-22.
Protean:ECL 36=44RHD+LA.LA=-8.

In core the Guardian Lammasu has +10, and some demon has +9.

But technically the highest la is +infinity because many la adding templates can be added an unlimited amount of times (like half dragon).

I specifically said to ignore templates.

Is this just flat LA or is this starting level? The avoral gardinal for eg has an LA of 8 but has 7 levels of RHD so your starting level would be 16 with a class level of 1.
some RHD can be ignored as you can de-level the creature but others especially at high levels can't really do this so cannot be ignored.

I specifically said to ignore templates.

DMG 2 has non-template abilities that can be added at a LA cost. Apply one of these infinite times. :smalltongue:
