View Full Version : Forum Name Ego Search

Aron Times
2014-11-10, 07:29 PM
Earlier this morning, I typed, "Joseph Silver" into Google Search. This was the first result:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Silver

Joseph Silver (1868-1918) also known as the "King of Pimps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimp)", was a man who terrorized women in Johannesburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannesburg), South Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa) during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

My reaction was as follows:

 :frown:  :annoyed: :amused:

I originally chose Joseph Silver as my name because Joseph is the English version of my real life name and because silver = second and I'm the second one with this name in my family (the first one being my late grandfather). I had no idea about the historical Joseph Silver until today.

What about you? Do you have the courage to ego search your own forum name?

Piggy Knowles
2014-11-10, 07:35 PM
From the first hit:

A reference Herbert Asbury’s The Gangs of New York.

Piggy Noles (misspelled Knowles) and Bum Mahoney both appear as being part of the river pirate gangs of Manhattan’s lower east side in mid 19th century New York.

They reappear together with Tommy Shay as part of the Hook gang:

"Another member of the Hookers was Piggy Noles, who stole a rowboat, repainted it and then sold it to its original owner".

I generally get people misspelling Knight, which is fine by me. It at least makes it marginally harder to find me offline.

All I got out of this is a reminder that one of these days I have to go around the internet and close down all the various accounts I've left behind over the years.

Hiro Protagonest
2014-11-10, 08:48 PM
My name is a slightly different spelling of Hiro Protagonist, main character of Snow Crash. It was entirely unintentional. I'm just gonna let people assume I've read it as it is apparently a good book. :smalltongue:

SaintRidley
2014-11-10, 10:24 PM
Apparently I'm a Detroit/Flint area rock band (https://www.facebook.com/SaintRidleymusic). I had no idea I was so tattooed, or that I was four guys, or that I was white until now.

Remmirath
2014-11-10, 10:42 PM
In a thoroughly unsurprising turn of events, this was the first thing that came up: http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Remmirath

The next several results are for a black metal band from Slovakia, which I did not know of, so that's interesting.

Dusk Eclipse
2014-11-10, 11:17 PM
So the first hit is a link (http://eclipsecolorthemes.org/?view=theme&id=1208) to... something, I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it is a theme, the second one to my Fanfiction page (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1331535/Dusk-Eclipse) (which is weird since I haven't updated it in years, and I took down my stories a while a go) and the third one is to someone's Youtube Channel.... that explains why I couldn't get that name :smallannoyed:

I need to say that am not that woman, and I'll feel sorry for her if she gets associated with/mistaken for me somehow.

Siosilvar's been nothing but me for eight years or so. As it should be.

SarahV
2014-11-11, 01:06 AM
Mine is pretty uninteresting since there are a lot of people with my first name and a middle or last initial of V.

The first result is my Youtube page, the sixth is me on Twitter, the rest are other Sarahs. Although I'm not sure if other people would get the same result as me due to the whole personalized Google search thing. Maybe I'm more liable to see my pages than another person would be. :smallconfused:

Siosilvar's been nothing but me for eight years or so. As it should be.I wish I had the same luck. I've found my name on Twitter, Instagram, Skype, and World of Warcraft (Among many other things) that aren't me.

Eldan
2014-11-11, 03:00 AM
"Eldan" seems to be an Israeli name and/or word. I did not know that. On, Wiki, there's Ironi Ashkelon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironi_Ashkelon), a sports team. On Google, there's "Eldan Car Rental, Israel", "Eldan Recycling", "Eldan Hotel Jerusalem" and "Eldan Law".

I can live with that. Like the name "Ashkelon".

No surprise here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvus_(genus))

Erloas
2014-11-11, 10:09 AM
Well on Bing the first 5 results are unrelated as they are assuming I spelled some other word wrong. 6-7 are me on a skiing forum and my PADHerder account. 8-22 are also assuming spelling mistakes

On Google it is a bit closer. The first page was entirely me. Paizo account, 3 Eve related links, a few forums (including this one) and then a lot more eve stuff. Including a photobucket account I forgot about as well as a deviant art one, nothing actually posted on the latter just needed it for something.

I found this one a bit interesting. "erloas is a Noob at IGN Boards. ... erloas. Last Activity: Dec 14, 2005. Joined: Aug 15, 2004." So it is almost 9 years since I posted anything and it still hits the first page.

It isn't a surprise that no one else comes up as me. This name was actually a randomly generated name from Dark Age of Camelot and I decided to keep using it after I left, but I did spend a lot of time playing DAoC so I had established it to myself pretty well at that point. I don't know of anyone else ever having used it, except my ex-step brother when he took my old WOW account.

Related to that, it is also why there is no great way to pronounce the name. Which is always a bit awkward when I'm playing with people I know and also makes it interesting to see what people pick when they are talking in voice comms.

A bit more surprising is that Loraes has a lot of hits and that is my primary alt name on every game, a simple anagram of Erloas. None of them are me.

Serpentine
2014-11-11, 10:32 AM
So... yeah, that. Doesn't work as well when it's just a word, huh?
I know that feel. Though last time I tried I discovered Gallery Serpentine, which is a pretty great Victoriana and gothicwear shop.

When I did it, a few months ago, Urban Dictionary was one of the things that came up. With obscene definitions. Making me wonder if someone went there in a huff after some debate or other, and put those definitions up.

Though it might turn out to be entirely unrelated.

And for someone who plays LoL. (Not me)

I used to be a brand of Finnish sportswear. After I found this out, I've been keeping an eye on the Finnish equivalent of ebay in hopes of getting a sports jacket about my size. Not much is on the market though. Damn, why did this company merge with another!

Weimann
2014-11-11, 12:01 PM
The entire first Google page informs me that I'm an Austrian football player in Aston Villa (http://www.espnfc.com/player/138905/andreas-weimann). Subsequent hits are mostly myself, as Weimann is in fact (part of) my actual last name. Then I get random people.

Well, 'Fabrius' isn't a real Roman name, but 'Septimus Fabricius' would have been a perfectly plausible name for a member of the gens Fabricia. Though apparently not anyone famous. The only 'Septimus Fabricius' I can find is some guy who lived in the 17th century and wrote a dissertation about medicine. Or something like that, I'm not going to translate enough of it to understand the context. That's probably just a Latinized version of whatever his actual name was, Septimus Smith or something, I don't know.

Jordan Cat

The next one seem's to be a blog on cat's.

Aand I'm actually studying Latin, and have done Ancient History and Classical Civ. in the past, so I really ought to have known that... Ah well.

Domino Quartz
2014-11-12, 02:49 AM
I just searched for my name. The first and third results pointed to the Domino's Pizza in Quartz Hill, California. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised by that. The second one (and quite a few of the ones below) were for fancy watches whose names contained "domino" and/or "quartz".

Gadora
2014-11-12, 06:58 AM
I am either an eyeball door from the Metroid series, or I am a pretty darn elegant lamp (http://www.luciitaliane.com/en/evi-style-en/gadora-en.html). I love being a lamp.

Heliomance
2014-11-12, 07:56 AM
It's all me. All of it. Every single one.

I know this, because I Googled Heliomance before I started using it, and got no results.

You are a quite impressive lamp. Considering they don't have prices and they don't even have a PDF catalog, it seems you are also a very expensive lamp. One of those "if you have to ask you can't afford it" sort of things.

Google tells me that I could have a Gadora lamp for between $650 (http://www.interior-deluxe.com/gadora-table-lamp-p15527.html?gmc_currency=1&gclid=CO7U-pja9cECFY9afgoduIcAlA) and $5,400 (http://www.allmodern.com/Evi-Style-Gadora-Chic-9-Light-Chandelier-GADORA-SO-6-3CHIC-L6085-K~AVIS1015.html?refid=GX46109960236-AVIS1015_11320168&device=c&ptid=75691842780&PiID[]=11320168&gclid=CLj8rvba9cECFRBrfgod2EwAjA), depending on the exact type. Also, I seem to be a style of lamp, rather than being a specific lamp. It's a shame I'm so far out of my price range, since I'd rather like to be able to own a Gadora.

I'd not actually looked into pricing before now, reasoning along the same general lines as you, but this search seems to bear out our suspicions. :smallfrown:

Also, according to a YouTube commentator, I'm 'hella tite'. Another compares me to Immortal Technique, who I actually know and somewhat like.

Gadora - I'd just like to add that you're quite a fetching lamp!

I'm me. Searching for Jormungand or Jormungandr gives you the demigod, of course. That said, a few pages in you get "Jormungand on Amazon - Low prices for Jormungand"

I should hope I'm not as cheap as they make me out to be...

Now people are gonna think I'm doing stealth advertising.
... I should have asked this company to pay me before requesting the name change.

As for my previous username... take your pick between the legendary swordsman (which named most of, if not all, the following), the battleship, the performance nutrition(!), the Japanese restaurants, the spicy mayo (damn, what's with the food), the university, the auto parts, the video game suggestion... all within the first 3 pages. The spicy mayo one is legit on the second page, not typing anything more.

Galen
2014-11-14, 02:17 PM
First search result:

Aelius Galenus or Claudius Galenus (/ɡəˈliːnəs/;[1] Greek: Κλαύδιος Γαληνός; AD 129 – c. 200/c. 216), better known as Galen of Pergamon (/ˈɡeɪlən/),[2] was a prominent Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher in the Roman empire.[3][4][5] Arguably the most accomplished of all medical researchers of antiquity, Galen influenced the development of various scientific disciplines, including anatomy,[6] physiology, pathology,[7] pharmacology,[8] and neurology, as well as philosophy[9] and logic.
Not too shabby.

Temotei
2014-11-14, 02:24 PM
Of course (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwhZ-TY_yFU).

Temotei's been my username since I was in 2nd grade because some parent came in claiming to know Japanese and was "translating" our names into Japanese. Mine (Timothy) was written down as Temotei. Brought it home and Mum loved it, so she's called me that since.

Alas, given that every fantasy universe and its associated MMORPG involves elementals or elemental effects, I'm not even going to bother.
However, if I use my alternate username for when I can't get this one apparently I'm a guy who fixes electric keyboards and posts YouTube videos about it. Fourth down is someone putting my art on a pony art site and tagging it with my name, sixth is my LoL account, but you have to go to the next page for my Deviant Art account.

Searching the username I use almost everywhere else (Lucyndaria) gets a few links to profiles of Lucy Daria, because apparently that's the same, and my dA account. I'm unique.

My old username (Asteron Questar) brings up my Giantitp first (yes, I'm an addict), Final Fantasy Tabletop forum, my youtube account I haven't used in years, mythweavers, my facebook account(even though I changed my name there), Shining Force Central....

Corlindale
2014-12-08, 12:11 PM
First couple of results are related to Fall from Heaven II, the Civ 4 mod I once worked on which has a hero unit named after my username.

The rest is the expected string of my various user profiles all over the web, some of which I'd totally forgotten about.

So I guess I'm fairly unique, though page 2 suggested that there might be some random guy named Corlindale who lived in the US in 1940.

As I expected, the entire first page is dedicated to my Alma Mater. What was surprising is that it took four pages to reach an entry not related.

Gnoman

Apparently I'm a Smurf holiday.

Lurkmoar

Big shock, it's meme related. (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/lurk-moar)

Shadowscale

An amazon book on dragons with my name, and a bunch of elder scroll wikis about my name.

Gnome Alone

Apparently I'm a Smurf holiday.

Congratulations, I always knew you had it in you.

Greenish

Related to that, it is also why there is no great way to pronounce the name.Huh, I immediately thought it'd be homonymous with "ear loss".

I'm a vague adjective, so I get a lot of hits (or, as I prefer to think of it, I get hit on a lot), but Greenish Warbler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenish_warbler) made it to the first page. No objections there. The suggestions Google comes up when typing "greenish" are far less pleasant.

Someone once asked if I took my nick after an alien vendor of the same name in some video game or another, but that was the first I'd heard of it, and have since forgotten the name of the game.

Togath

Search revealed...
A youtube page(not mine)
And characters in WoW named "Togath".
Oddly, none of them mine :3

As for the origin; It was the name of my first DnD character.

All I get are the many accounts I have made under this name. Looks like I am unique!

Gavran

No surprise here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvus_(genus))

Haha, nice. :)

An Enemy Spy

Several links about TF2, an article about a british spy, and... my FF.net account. Not gonna lie, I'm surprised I actually showed up.

Antonok
2015-01-05, 06:37 AM
Hmmm. I get a link to an unsuccessful DJ, a crapload of different accounts I've opened (and some that aren't mine), and the interesting fact that Antonok is a real (albeit rare) last name.

(I made this name a long time ago as a spoof of Mantorok from Eternal Darkness)

I know how you feel. (http://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavrani)

Was that not intentional?

Apparently I am a sculpture (http://www.jenluma.com/large-multi-view/Archives/90117-42-11236/Sculpture.html#.VKsSbFWJOuY). Pretty cool-looking, though.

Sir Enigma

Sir Enigma for Prime Minister of Australia! (http://https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sir-Enigma-for-the-Prime-Minister-of-Australia/125165610863646)

For the record, that's not me...

If I don't enclose the name in quotes, I get a lot of links to Sir Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations.

MKV

If I go to the disambiguation page for MKV on Wikipedia the last result is something called multiple kill vehicle.
:smallcool:
I have no idea what this is but is sounds awesome.

Jeff the Green

Bah. Mine comes up with a bunch of things that are like "...Jeff. The green...". Does anyone know how to force Google to exclude results with punctuation between words?

(Un)Inspired

Lame.

I got a link to a thesaurus website with the word uninspired then some articles on ways to fight boredom and depression.

To find a specific phrase, I think you need to place it in quotation marks.

So, for you, "Jeff the Green" ought to do it.

It still ignores punctuation.
