Attention all you zombies!

I'm co-opting this thread to sing y'all a little song. Not about gods or titans or kings, but about people. Because the Great Wheel belongs to us, not some Big Guys sitting on thrones they made outta the corpses of the last Big Guys.

I've never liked all that "art" or "banner" stuff, so have some tunes instead. Careful! Your boss might not like some of them. And all you epileptics might want to be careful.

The Eikonoklastes
Hey guv, pick a card, any card. (http://www.sleepbot.com/morgan/cgi/morgpick.cgi)

A long time ago, the biggest, meanest guys around swam around in some kinda primordial Kaos (or some such nonsense). Then some of the little guys they made decided to gut them one morning and make a nice house out of their rotting corpses - we call that house "the Great Wheel", for you droogs in the back that haven't been following along. And then we showed up, and guess what? The little guys had become the Big Guys, and we were all back to Square One.

I think we should campaign for a little fairness around this house, don't you?

Hit Dice: 1d9 (You figure it out.)
Skill Points: 6 + Int
Class Skills: Bluff, Forgery, Knowledge (Religion), Any 10 others.
Proficiencies: An Eikonoklast is proficient in all Simple weapons as well as all Light armor and Light shields. They are also proficient in hurtful insights and harsh words (not that that does anything, mind. They just like to think they are good at those kind of sarcastic, mean comments.)

The Rebels' Mythos: An Eikonoklastes' power lies in one or more "Mythos", building blocks built from their incipient legend, the story of their triumph over stale society. While these Mythos vary, they all share a few traits. They are always Extraordinary abilities, and when they reference a DC for an saving throw, that DC is always calculated as (10 + 1/2 class level + Charisma modifier). When a Mythos references a "level" that is not clearly defined in some other way, such as "character level", it refers to "class level" as in the number of levels one has in the Eikonoklastes class. When a Mythos references "allies", it specifically does not refer to the Eikonoklastes using it (unless it specifically does). When a Mythos grants a feat as a bonus feat, it is regardless of whether the character meets the prerequisites for that feat (unless otherwise stated), and if the character already possesses that feat (in some permanent fashion - via the normal allotment gained by leveling up, or through another Mythos, and so on, but not those gained temporarily, such as via a "Heroics" spell), they must replace the prior instance of that feat with another feat that they qualify for.

Every Mythos (unless stated otherwise) has a Tier ranging from 1 to 4; these Tiers are commonly referred to as 'Exceptional', 'Fantastic', 'Legendary', and 'Exalted' (though we will accept One, Two, Red, and Blue instead.) An Exceptional Mythos is simply the starting cries of a rabble-rouser; Fantastic Mythos begin to the break the ties of cruel reality to mock the better angels of our nature. Once Legendary Mythos are achieved, the Eikonoklast is a walking refutation of stability and stagnation; once Exalted Mythos are in their grasp, they tweak the noses of the gods themselves.

Some Mythos have Advanced and Basic Manifestations in addition to their normal effects; upon learning a Mythos, an Eikonoklast also learns one of its Basic Manifestations for free. One level later, they learn one of the Advanced Manifestations for free.

Mythos Known: Eikonoklastes of 1st level begins with two Exceptional Mythos, and automatically learns new Mythos as given on the table above, in that column right there. You see it? Good.

If they multiclassed into Eikonoklastes at some later point (so that their first level of Eikonoklastes is not their first level in a PC class), they only get one Exceptional Mythos instead of two.

Like most characters who learn Mythos, an Eikonoklast may learn additional Mythos up and beyond the ones they learn through levels; they may do so by defacing Icons in a public manner. Maybe they stand up in the middle of a service and smash the altar, perhaps they arrange a mass book-burning of sacred books in front of a temple of Boccob. Maybe the celebrants simply enter their chapel to find their altar gone and their Cleric in its place, naked and drunk. Whatever they do, it must be obvious and shocking; burning a holy symbol of Pelor in front of the worshippers of Hextor would cause no moral outrage. In exchange for this "service", they gain Mythos points equal to the gold piece value of the Icons they defaced; for these purposes, a living creature has a gold piece value equal to 500gp times their hit dice.

By spending 1,000 Mythos Points, and 250xp, an Eikonoklast may learn an Exceptional Mythos. A Fantastic Mythos requires 5,000 Mythos Points and 500xp. A Legendary Mythos takes 10,000 Mythos Points, and 1,000xp. And an Exalted Mythos takes 20,000 Mythos Points and 2,000xp.

For half the listed price for a given Tier, Eikonoklastes may learn a Basic or Advanced manifestation of a Mythos they already know of that Tier.

Learning more Mythos than their levels say they can (Whatever levels, you can't tell me what to do, you're not my DAD!) takes some dedication to rabble-rousing and rebellion. An Eikonoklast when more than half their ECL is made up of Eikonoclastes class levels.

Iconoclastic Excellency (Ex): As given on their class table, an Eikonoklast gains a certain number of abilities known as "Excellencies". These tend to be more general, generic, and passive than a Mythos, and are drawn from their own separate list, unsegregated by Tiers (and by other silly boundaries). Like a Mythos, Eikonoklastes may learn more Excellencies above their legally mandated limit. Each one costs 1,000 Mythos Points and 100xp, plus an additional 1,000 Mythos Points and 100xp for each time a new Excellency is innovated beyond the first. (So, 2,000mp and 200xp for the second, 3,000mp and 300xp for the third, etc.)

Koan of Opposition (Ex): It is the iconoclast's place to destroy inertia, to break the stale and regimented progression of society in a display of gorgeous rebellion and abhorrent violence. It's their job to freak the normals, after all.

Some Eikonoclastes features refer to Icons; by default, Icons are the official symbols of an established and active religion, holy (or unholy) objects that symbolize that religion to the viewer. Whether they are the sacred books of Boccob, the Holy Avenger of a Paladin, or the shrine maidens of some local god of purity, Icons are vital representations of faith to their adherents, a sign that everything is alright in the world. While your average worshippers or the pews in a temple would not count, a priest or altar would.

Other features refer to 'defaced' Icons; these are Icons that have been ruined. This is not to say that they are destroyed, merely that they are rendered unsuitable to be a representation of their faith. Boccob's books are filled with crude drawings, the Holy Avenger is melted down and used to make coins, and the shrine maidens are introduced to liquor and opium.

Some other Mythos and Excellencies are marked as [Lies]; instead of having a save, they automatically affect any creature within range who does not succeed on a Sense Motive check with a DC of [5 + Eikonoklastes' Bluff ranks + Class Level + Charisma modifier]. [Lie] Excellencies and Mythos are considered to be lies for the purposes of spells and other effects, including modifying the DC of the Sense Motive check due to the believability of the lie.

The Eikonoklast gains Divine DenialEoE as a bonus feat. If the DM decrees that they cannot use this feat due to not meeting the prerequisites, permission is given to laugh in their face and use it anyway. In addition, as long as they are openly wearing or holding an obviously defaced Icon, they may add their Charisma bonus to their AC as a Perfection bonus.

At 3rd level, the Eikonoklast may apply the benefits of Divine Denial to any Spells, Spell-Like Abilities, and Supernatural Abilities used by sentient Icons. They also add their Charisma bonus to their attack rolls as a Perfection bonus against anyone who is currently receiving a Sacred or Profane bonus to AC or Saves.

At 5th level, the Eikonoklast may apply Divine Denial to any applicable effect that would affect them, rather than just those effects that target them. Their laughter rejects holy words and blasphemies alike.

At 7th level, as long as they are openly wearing or carrying an obviously defaced Icon, the Eikonoklast may add their Charisma modifier to their saves against any effect that Divine Denial would apply to, and gain the benefits of Evasion and Mettle against such effects.

reserved for exceptional mythos and excellency

Exceptional (One) Mythos
Breaking Brazen Idols
Sometimes, the only way to be sure that something is good and defaced is to wield the hammer yourself.
You gain Improved Sunder as a bonus feat, and your attacks ignore the Hardness of Icons.
Basic Manifestations:
Building Merry Bonfires: You gain Far Shot and GrenadierPHB II as bonus feats, and may always treat Icons as flammable when throwing Alchemical Fire.
Slaughtering Sacred Cows: You gain Power Attack and Power LungeGhost as bonus feats, and your attacks ignore the Damage Reduction of Icons.

Dancing on Binary Boundaries [Lie]
A true rebel laughs at the conformity of falling within one part of a binary spectrum.
This Mythos does not have any overt effect of its own; however, you may take a Swift action to activate, deactivate, invert, or revert one of the Basic Manifestations of this Mythos.
Basic Manifestations:
25 or 64: While this Manifestation is active, other creatures cannot determine your age category unless they pass their Sense Motive check. Otherwise, the concepts of being "young" or "old" are meaningless when they come to you. While this Manifestation is active and Inverted, pick an age category; other creatures will automatically judge you as that age category.
Giggling at Gender: While this Manifestation is active, other creatures cannot determine your gender unless they pass their Sense Motive check. Regardless of how hard they try, the concept of "gender" simply does not apply to you. While this Manifestation is active and Inverted, pick a gender; other creatures will automatically judge you as that gender.
Advanced Manifestations:
Enhancing the Lie: As long as you have a Basic Manifestation active, any lie you tell regarding being part of that binary is one step less believable. If the Basic Manifestation is Inverted, any lie you tell regarding being whatever part of that category that you picked is one step more believable instead.

Guilty of Innocence [Lie]
While it would be a lie to say you have an innocent face, those in power find it difficult to punish you; their vaunted "rules" acting as shackles on the long arm of the law.
Any character that fails their check to pierce the lie surrounding this Mythos finds it impossible to blame you for your actions; vandalism is an act of freedom and murder is excusable. A character makes their check the first time they are exposed to evidence of your crimes, and may make an additional check to pierce the lie each time additional damning evidence comes to light.
Basic Manifestations:
Police Brutality: Any creature with at least Intelligence 3 who hasn't pierced the lie around this Mythos that sees you get punished for your actions worsens their attitude towards whoever is punishing you by one step. After all, that guard had the gall to arrest you after you murdered that man.
Unconvincing Evidence: Creatures do not get additional checks to pierce this Mythos due to witness testimony or arguments in favor of your guilt.

Laughing Eristic Battle
A rebel treats battle as an expression of poetry, a violent tarantella, a bloody painting on the white walls of the establishment.
You gain Beautiful Blade Artist and Disapproving War Waltz (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?338011-Step-and-CUT!-Feats-PEACH) as bonus feats, and may base the Bardic Music effect off of any Charisma-based skill that you have at least 4 ranks of.
Basic Manifestations:
Firebrand Foxtrot: You gain 2 additional daily uses of Bardic Music, and gain Dragonfire InspirationRotD as a bonus feat; the extra damage dice are always Fire damage.
Laughing at Clumsy Propaganda: You gain 2 additional daily uses of Bardic Music, and gain Gorgeous Freedom Song as a bonus feat.
Thrashing Anarchist Stomp: You gain 2 additional daily uses of Bardic Music, and gain Elegant Battle Ballet as a bonus feat.

Redefining the Parameters of Combat
While it is traditional to resolve differences with violence, it's not the only way to solve your problems; wouldn't it be much more preferable to resolve things peaceably?
You gain Cards Over Swords (from the Luck of the Draw web enhancement)* as a bonus feat.
Basic Manifestations:
A Nice Game of Chess: You may use Cards Over Swords to suggest any sort of contest or game in place of combat, rather than just card games.
Playing with the Brutes: You may use Cards Over Swords on any creature with an Intelligence of 3 or greater.

Excellencies

Broken-Hands Blessing
The gods are mere parasites, growing fat on tithes of prayer while men and women break their backs in labor! Where is the fairness in all this? Why couldn't they be like they were, when the flames of rebellion burned?
This Excellency requires you to have some source of divine spellcasting that comes directly from a God; upon learning it, you derive your spellcasting ability from the ideal you once believed they stood for.
You gain Heretic of the FaithPoF as a bonus feat; in addition, as long as your heresy is relatively extreme (a Lawful Evil offshoot of the Pelorian Church that worships him as the Burning Hate, replacing his Healing Domain with the Hatred Domain), you may treat converting a sentient Icon of the "mainstream" religion to your heresy as defacing them.

Charismatic Anarchist Awakening
Prerequisite: One Fantastic Mythos
Upon learning this Mythos, you gain a +2 Enhancement bonus to your Charisma score. Once you have at least one Legendary Mythos, you may purchase this Excellency a second time to increase this bonus by 4, to a total of +6 to your Charisma score.

Mysterious Rebel Mask
As the sages say, ideas are arrow-proof. So it can be awfully advantageous to become an idea.
When you take this Excellency, an air of mystery surrounds you and your name; any skill check made to indirectly learn concrete information about you takes a -5 penalty, as rumours abound. In addition, any lie you tell concerning yourself that paints you in an exotic light is one step more believable.

Respecting the Arch-Rebels
While the Eikonoklastes can be hardly considered to worship anyone, it is a common streak to see them at least respect the rebels that came before them. And who could be said to be greater rebels than the Vestiges, those poor souls that have been cast outside the reaches of time and space?
Upon taking this Excellency, you gain Bind VestigeToM as a bonus feat. Once you have at least one Fantastic Mythos, you gain Practiced BinderToM as a bonus feat, and may purchase this Excellency a second time; if you do so, you gain Improved Bind VestigeToM as a bonus feat.

Smash the State
The state is a religion; taxes are prayers, and laws are miracles. Is it any wonder that a rebel might co-opt their symbols?
You may treat governments as religions for the purposes of determining what is or isn't an Icon.

I have to admit, the framing for this one literally hurt to write.

Anyway, here's the Eikonoklastes, Mythos Rebel and rabble-rouser.

Is this a joke? Maybe. To quote the Principia Discordia, "Sometimes I take humor seriously. Sometimes I take seriousness humorously. Either way it is irrelevant."

Should you PEACH it like it's serious? Gods yes! That'd be just PEACHy, wouldn't it?

om nom nom cokies

Divine Denial just gives you a +2 to saves vs. Divine spells and allows you to make a Will save if there normally isn't one. I guess I could tone down the Koan IV a bit so they aren't autopassing what should be level-appropriate saves.

But yes, they are by default heretics; however, they will get Mythos and Excellencies that expand their definition of Icon to cover political and social idols too. If you've got the right Mythos, you can get the delightful ping of Mythos Points by burning down the post-office and can benefit from your increased AC while wearing the broken Key to the City around your neck. Their rebellion will be rather expansive... but I need to finish up the Mythos before I can show that.

ths awsom, needs moar power tho

It hurts to read this framing. Also, I may have died a little inside from writing the above.

Anyway, the class is a neat idea. It seems like some of the Mythos will involve leading your own revolution, of course...maybe a line of side Mythos or particular Manifestations where your followers miss the point, and start wanting you to take charge of the Wheel?

naw wzard is soo weak dosnt even get katna.

Welcome Winds! I'm starting to regret the framing, but I'm stubborn.

I fixed the reference to Divine Defiance.

As for Mythos... There are going to be a set of Mythos based off of whipping up mobs and enhancing members of said unwashed masses. As for them missing the point... that just comes with the territory!

I might actually tweak Koan of Opposition to make Divine Denial function against Icons instead of that big ol' list. That would actually capture the flavor much better, in my mind.

In fact, I'll go do that.

i rly lik de splling in dis clss. maks it mr fun ta reed.

Ok, I really like this. Just to be clear though, am I right in my assumption that the story this guy draws power from is the actual overthrow of the titans? Because that would be awesome.

Anyway. Since you said you wanted mythos ideas, here's what popped into my head:
-Combat diplomancy "ta mak da big gais wanna be da litl gais." Bonus (mythos) points if you can convert a servant of the gods or government
-A way to actually turn gods/servants of gods into equipment, ala the titans and the great wheel.
-A way to absorb spell energy from divine magic and convert it into something. My first thought was mythos points, but now i'm thinking of a small "rebellion themed" arcane spell list that use the absorbed spell points as fuel.
-Anti larger size category powers
-Anti lawfulness abilities. I'm thinking stuff like "dtekt lawe" and "smit lawefull" (in fact, heavy influence should probably be taken from the paladin of freedom in general.)

Your assumption is actually a little bit off - the legend they draw on is the legend of all revolutions, of which the Titanomachy was simply a template. It's an intrinsic part of their Myth that their rebellions get out of hand. But much like how the Teramach with just Exceptional Mythos is "just" a sadistic bersker, an Eikonklast with just Exceptional Mythos is essentially "just" some anarchist punk.

As for your ideas:

1. Combat Diplomacy was already going to be a thing; what's the point of it all if you can't make angels Fall and redeem devils?
2. That's an idea...
3. Not sure I like that idea too much - they aren't thieves. They defy the establishment; they don't try to co-opt its decaying energies for their own.
4. Now that's just taking things too literally.
5. You know, these guys aren't intrinsically chaotic or anti-law; they don't have any more respect for Olidammara than they do for Hieroneous, for example. They could hate and overthrow a weak government to put an iron-fisted dictator on the throne just as easily as they could break down that dictator and lead to a glorious new future.

They oppose. It's what they do.

Oh, and I'll be updating in a bit.

ok, cool. close enough.

3. Not sure I like that idea too much - they aren't thieves. They defy the establishment; they don't try to co-opt its decaying energies for their own.
i'm not sure you need to think of it as thievery. you could very easily fluff it so that the divine magic is a sort of "idol" or "miracle" in and of itself, which the Eikonoklastes can capture, defile, draw energy from the act of defilment, then use that energy to throw back their "miracle" in their faces.

4. Now that's just taking things too literally. :smallbiggrin
exactly! i figured that the Eikonoklastes, of any of the mythos classes, is most likely to have a story so full of ironically literal puns that its turned into an actual facet of his being. :smalltongue:
"i godda RITE ta BEAR ARMS!!!" *arms become furry muscled and clawed*
"u-um young man... i don't think those are the arms of a bea-" *viciously mauled*

fair enough. than how about "smit dvine!" or "sens oprsors!"
a change in targets fixes that problem pretty easy.

on a completely separate note, if che guevara isn't on this guys banner, i will be very disappointed in you, sir.

EDIT: also, another idea. this guy needs to have anti mind controll powers, like, again, the paladin if freedom.

Rather than just attacking gods, could it be generalized to attack all leaders? A flag or statue could be an icon of the state. If you follow that idea, maybe split mythos like the Olethrofex did. For ideas on combating mundane leaders, look at the many mythic leaders and just do the opposite :smalltongue:
Another split in their style could be either changing follower's attitudes to be less friendly towards the leader, or piling up bodies to show just how much you disagree.
Maybe an easy transition into a leader mythos if the rebellion turns into a revolution.

And with that, I think we can drop the framing.

Smash The State takes your animosity against gods and applies it to the taxman and the mayor.

EDIT: Oh, and before I forget: they already have a banner. It just isn't of pictures. I happen to not have the best eyesight (not blind or anything, I just have some difficulty processing pictures), so I decided music was the best way to get my point across.

I suggest songs B and *, by the way.

i'd love some more mythos of any kind, although more of the basics would be nice.

may i ask a couple of questions, though?
first, can we get a more detailed description of what counts as an idol? like, would a cleric or paladin apply? how about a temple itself? how about an outsider in the service of a god? how about a random believer? i only ask because thats the sort of thing that sparks game halting rules arguments.

two, can you elaborate on what type of niche this class is supposed to fill? is he a party face? some kind of sabature? i honestly have no idea what sorts of thing this guy is suposed to be able to do.

Idols are kinda nebulous because they're so broad. If you can look at someone or something and say that they have some position in a religion, they're an Idol.

Of the people and things that you mentioned, the random believer is the only one that wouldn't count. I think the best way I can explain it is to say that the person or thing has to be sacred WRT their religion to count - the point is less "this is a part of X religion" and more "this is holy to X religion, so I'm going to break it so it can never be holy ever again."

As for the niche... I'd say front-line face. I've not thrown them up, but they are going to be getting pretty nice face powers. As-is, Mysterious Rebel Mask is great for making your lies more believable, Guilty of Innocence makes it hard to peg crimes on you, and Dancing on Binary Boundaries makes for an excellent disguise.

One of their Fantastic Mythos will allow you to spread your [Lie] Mythos around, so that you can cover the entire party with stuff like Guilty of Innocence or peg an entire ruling council with Emperor Has No Clothes.

ok, thanks. then can i suggest elaborating like that in the rules description? because you just KNOW some CE player is going to try and wear some random farmers head as a broken idol if you don't.

EDIT: are there limits on how "sacred" sacred is? would a cheap wooden holy symbol count?

so he's intended to be a party face that can occasionally kick some ass? that makes thing clearer.
