I like the idea. Forges the PC group into something more concrete/binding from the start. Adds some really fun layers to the DMs' side of the story as well - plot hooks, baddies, conspiracies, etc.

I agree this is really great, and I don't know why people on your blog find the Secret Society benefit overpowered.

Something you should consider is how this interacts with how the normal background system provides skill/tool proficiencies as well as starting equipment packages.
