View Full Version : Optimizing a 1-level Wizard dip for Dweomerkeeper.

I have an idea for a character I want to play. He's a cleric of Thoth that enters Dweomerkeeper. I plan on taking Cloistered Cleric for the Knowledge domain and taking the Spell and Magic domains as my remaining two. My focus will be utility (via anyspell on my mantle of spells, etc) and buffing.

Assuming that I do not use magical training/southern magician/alternative source spell and instead opt for a dip into wizard for a level, what can I do to make the most of it? I was thinking about trying to optimize the abilities of my familiar.

Anyspells spells are Arcane, so you automatically qualify for this prerequisite.

Assuming you're dead set in dipping Wizard, getting Abrupt Jaunt in place of your familiar is great, although you'll have to specialize in Conjuration. Swap Scribe Scroll for Improved Initiative (Martial Wizard) and you're pretty much golden

You can make good use of Customize Domain to revamp your cleric domains to include wizard spells you wouldn't normally have access to.

Optimizing your familiar will be tough without some levels in Wizard. Bascially, he'll just be a glorified scout that will cost a modicum of XP if he dies. If still want to do it, there's the Dictum Mortuum's Handbook (http://dictummortuum.blogspot.com.br/2011/08/familiars-handbook.html) on the subject.

Come on! Now you're just advertising your new handbook! Not that I care, considering it's a pretty awesome handbook :smallamused:

The Spell domain gives you Anyspell, which allows you to prepare and cast an arcane spell exactly as a Wizard does, i.e. it's cast as an arcane spell, so that could also help you meet that prerequisite without multiclassing.

For a Wizard dip, I would specialize in Conjuration, trade your Familiar for Abrupt Jaunt in PH2, and use the Fighter feat variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#wizard) (unless you need Scribe Scroll to qualify for Dweomerkeeper) to get something like Improved Initiative or Improved Toughness. Prepared spells should include Benign Transposition and Nerveskitter, and be sure to get wands of choice Wizard spells such as Command Undead.

Maybe I am! Still, if he's taking a dip, he might as well pull as much out of it as he can.

In addition to the ACFs Biffoniacus_Furiou mentioned, I'd recommend the Spontaneous Summoning (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#spontaneousSummoning) one. You lose your bonus spell for being a Conjurer (boohoo) but can spontaneously cast the Summon Monster line, including using your Cleric slots.

Hmmm... I did not realize that Anyspell actually counted as an arcane spell. I was under the impression it was given errata to make it divine.

As for the familiar I was thinking I'd use improved familiar with wands or something.

Most of the Improved Familiars require an arcane spellcasting level above 1, unfortunately. So unless you're using Anyspell to qualify (at which point you'd be using it for Dweomerkeeper) then it won't work.
