Random Rules for a Random Banter
waaaait for it.......

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Well? What are you waiting for? Get chattering already!

If you did show the work in some way, I would talk to him about it. Either you will find out that is not the reason, or you may get to improve a grade. From my experience, talking to someone about it is the best way to handle it. Your method clearly worked. Also, I strongly dislike people who believe their way is the only way, eslecially since there is usually another way.

Edit: I completely agree with LaZodiac on this.

I'm starting by just talking to him about it. Explaining that I did show all of my work and what my methodology was. Also owning up to the fact that I did have one mistake in notation. I forgot to say I was taking the variance given some variables, but that should have been inferrable from context.

EDIT: Also, I'm not mad about the reasoning, oddly enough. Although you can be sure I'm giving a very negative evaluation at the end of the semester. I'm more mad that he took off so many points.

In actuarial science and mathematical statistics, the method by which you got your answer is frequently more important than the answer itself. However, if you can explain your reasoning behind your method, you really should be getting some points at least.

Although if you got to the real answers, you must be doing something right. Maybe he just wanted to make a point about the methods to use. Or something equally idiotic.

The same goes for computer science, really. If your solution scales too poorly, or fails to follow established coding conventions, it may be failed per default even if it reaches the correct answer.

For instance, we have one professor right now who fails you on the course if you on two separate occations forget to document but a single loop variant. Or accidently name one of the handin files incorrectly. But then again, he seriously doesn't have enough time to deal with the overhead of renaming a huge bunch of files to be able to run their test scripts on them, and he hasn't been anything but clear about what the rules are.

It was about predicting time series. On one question, I solved it exactly correctly, I just "eyeballed" the prediction equation. To me, at least, it's a simple enough expected value that I shouldn't need to say I'm taking one. If it's a linear sum of past terms and error terms, I think it's fairly obvious that to predict it, you just plug predicted/observed values into the recursion and assume future errors are 0.

The other one was finding the width of a two-period prediction interval. Except instead of working with the error two periods from now, I used the actual time series. So I used that same recursive logic to find the predicted value in terms of errors and observed values. (I.e. things with known variance) Then I just used the usual sum of variance formula, with V(ε) as the estimate value we were given and V(observed value) as 0.

On a happier note, I think I found the two most obvious statements I've made in math classes recently.

If a=b, then a=b
V(X|X) = 0

Yeah, in easier cases it's possible to see what the answer "should" be. And it's tempting to just give it :smalltongue:

But I imagine that the point is to use the standard methods for the easy stuff, so that when the more difficult stuff comes around, it is already ingrained. You won't be able to do the same with a time series with a weird cyclical trend, or with non-zero future error terms, or whatever. I've always found it useful to state your assumptions at least generally, like

Assume future trends follow past experience, and
Assume future expected deviation is zero

and so on.

Might sound obvious, but sometimes it's what they want.

On a happier note, I think I found the two most obvious statements I've made in math classes recently.

Part of the problem is that I'm very much used to recursion at this point. My logic: Any given term is just a sum (because we're only doing ARMA right now). The expected value of a sum is the sum of expected values. All the terms are either constants, errors, or previous terms. Constants stay, well, constant. Errors we assume are 0. Previous terms are either other predicted values or observed values.

I won't deny that there might be cases where that doesn't work. But this is definitely a time where I'd need to see one to get why.

Both of these statements fills me with an immense satisfaction

Context:

If a=b, then a=b: I was attempting to see if the first n moments can uniquely define a set of n elements. This was the base case for n=1.

V(X|X) = 0: In that second time series question, I wound up with V(Y_T | Y_1, ..., Y_T).

I live in the cheaper suburbs, so no one really has their own driveways to shovel as we're all cramped in these blocks of flats. I kinda miss and don't miss doing it - I just have some really fond memories of doing it with dad when I was a kid, back when we lived in the countryside. If I could, I would join you! Why do people assume 1337-speech is read purely left-to-right, and that 7 represents T.

Neither of those things are true. 7 represents L. "L337" means "LEEL," "LELE," "ELEL" and "ELLE," none of which mean anything. 1337 means LEET, but if read purely from left-to-right, while otherwise doing the proper decoding, would technically be TEEL.

I don't know why I brought this up.

1337 Doesn't need an alphabet. I'm pretty sure it is just whatever looks like it goes. I saw this really cool study once where letters were rearranged, and some were replaced by numbers. It pointed out that as long as it had all of the letters or numbers, and the first and last letter was in the right place, your brain read it like normal. It was really cool.

The problem would be shoveling, if you needed to do it. Also, walking outside and driving. If you search for pictures of Buffalo city snow 2014, you will find pictures of cars and people out in the snow. I found one with two snow mobiles riding along the snow at the height of the top of a street sign.

I've hiked up to school with snow up my groin, it's fun. Honestly, I don't mind snow at all, but then again I have nothing that makes my life uneasy for having a crapton of it. I mean being dependant on a car would probably be the worst, because those things need so much maintenance on them.

Duck999

And as far as I know, the plows were not even useful to clear the roads, at least not at first. Snow is fun though, and I would gladly take that much of it if I did not have things I constantly needed to get to far away. Those tend to require a car drive. Maybe if I ever get somewhere where I am free for a few days I will hope there are 6 feet of snow.

Okay, grading update. I get the reasoning, even if no points is too extreme.

He grades first on conceptual understanding. Because he doesn't look at names while grading (makes sense), he couldn't tell if Student X understood he was taking a conditional expected value. Even if had he looked at the name, he would have known [Razanir] understands it. Again, I get the reasoning and won't try arguing for points back (on question 1). But I still feel like no points was a bit extreme.

That said, I'm not entirely convinced I was wrong on the second question. It sounds to me like we found the same formula, just with different logic.

Canadian car chase:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0isFjaXFUM

1337 Doesn't need an alphabet. I'm pretty sure it is just whatever looks like it goes. I saw this really cool study once where letters were rearranged, and some were replaced by numbers. It pointed out that as long as it had all of the letters or numbers, and the first and last letter was in the right place, your brain read it like normal. It was really cool.

I find the lack of driving, or any chasing, in that car chase highly amusing. Especially since there was the obvious way go just casually stroll up to the runasay car. Looks like somethig from a comedy movie...

Also, that is not the research thing I was talkig about, but it is similar. The one I saw also had letters mixed in.

Your mind can do incredible things to fix mistakes in what you read, often without you even noticing, but the point is that the claim that "as long as it had all of the letters or numbers, and the first and last letter was in the right place, your brain read it like normal" is completely wrong. You can jumble up the letters in a way so that it is easy enough to read. But, even following those rules, it is possible to jumble up the letters in a way so that it not easy at all to read. That "first and last" thing is complete bupkis.

The statement is that it would always work. Since it only sometimes works, the statement is never "accurate." Sometimes it appears accurate, and other times it appears inaccurate, but it's actually just the latter.

I was not happy to read about this either. You are right that this is a little less angry making than before. But still not good enough. :smallannoyed:

Of course, the human brain is only really good at fixing consistent errors. When the errors starts deviating from the pattern, it suddenly becomes very hard (I tried rearranging the letters, but neither 'y' nor 'u' are members of "approximate" http://i.imgur.com/ZRHtTJs.png).

While it is possible, I don't recall posting that image in Random Banter before. Was it perhaps someone else? If it was me, it would have been a looooong time ago.

Unless it was in a 10-ish-page quote storm a little more than a year ago, no you haven't. I've read every post in Random Banter ever since I joined the thread, apart from that single gap, and that picture was new to me.

Depending what type of ground you're talking about, that should either be a good sign, or merely completely harmless. Given, if it's the return pole of the voltage source connected to sensitive electronics, it could be prone to magic (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/magic-story.html). http://i.imgur.com/ZRHtTJs.png

Again, I'm mostly fine with it now. At any rate, it's a quiz. The worst that happened is that I can *gasp* no longer get an A+. And even then I might be able to, since he said I'm getting extra credit for paying attention. Which I laugh at, since I don't really pay attention. Much of class is me talking to the girl next to me, making insights on how to go about things more... sensibly. I won't say more easily. Just that it's more straightforward.

What I still don't get is the second question, and this is almost to the point of making a full thread about it. When making a prediction interval, I used a different variable than I was supposed to. Catch is, I fail to see how our intervals could ever be different, or at least have different variances.

Speaking of smells...It looks like we might get above freezing today, which means a trip out into the yard with boots and shovel is necessary. Otherwise all that dog poop is going to thaw and start stinking. :smalleek:

Fortunately I have kids and I can force them to go out there and help. No I can't just make them do it yet or they will go out and play in the snow and carefully avoid all the poop and yellow spots. In other words...not clean it up. So I am obligated to at least show them how to do it the first time, so that the next time (when it is colder :smallamused:) they can do it instead of me.

Oh! And I've decided to try my hand at crocheting again. Something I did as a kid, of course, but haven't done in...well longer than I can think. I found a cheap kit on amazon that included the yarn, the needles, and a pattern.

I plan to work my way towards this (http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/pdf/original.pdf)! Even though it's the knit pattern it gives me the basics for what I'll need and I found a crochet pattern (http://stormflycrafts.blogspot.com/2012/12/doctor-who-fourth-doctors-scarf-crochet.html) that I can consult also...

I know how you feel. If I'm exhausted, I go up to bed early, thinking that I'll go to sleep early. I then proceed to stay awake in bed for three hours or so. If I'm not tired, I go up to sleep later ... and still stay awake in bed for three hours or so. I bet it has to do with me using the computer before I go to sleep. I've heard that f.lux fixes that, but that orange tint sorta creeps me out. I should try it, though.

The thing is, the application is just a sent document, and the entrance exam is what matters combined with your grades. The exam for the programme I want to get into consisted of a written part (gang violence in Helsinki) where I reflected on my experiences in Glasgow (hit or miss), then an interview (hit or miss, I brainfarted a lot with Finnish, I wasn't that used to speaking it right after moving back to Finland), and activity tasks (3 minute activity planning & presenting + discussion of how youth workers can collaborate with schools)... I dunno. It's all hit and miss. It's all about how they liked me as a person, and that's what stresses me out. If I don't get in, I know I'll take it personally as a statement of "you're not enough". And it's a scary feeling I've been trying to brush off, but it's still sticking onto me.

Yup. I drew them a few months ago and made a Firefox extension to rehack the smilie table in the posting area to insert them instead. I've been using them ever since! http://i.imgur.com/haudcUB.png

My usual advice: Remember to read the textbook. It's definitely helpful in my life contingencies class, at least. My professor only really teaches the formulas and as separate entities. The textbook goes more conceptual, and explains how they're all the same algorithm. But in any case, as long as the professor didn't write the textbook, it usually explains it differently. So if the professor's explanations don't help, the textbook might just.

I've had teachers that teach you directly out of the textbook. They open it on their desk, then type in into a document while projecting it for us to take notes. That got really boring really fast.

So the bad/annoying news. I had an exam in a night class the day before break. The good news, though, that made up for it. I got to finish a proof the most epic way possible. By writing Q.E.D. in giant letters at the bottom of the page. (I just wish it would have been the last question, not second to last)

If by good you mean food quality, then that is an issue because Jamaican cuisine is amazing and you shouldn't be deprived of great food. If by good you mean "not seedy" well...you're not really having proper Jamaican cuisine if you don't see a guy prepare a chicken for you from fresh to food, if you catch my drift.

Note that everything I say about this subject is influenced by Anthony Bordain's show about "going to places and eating their food the correct, non tourist way" and thus I cannot be actually sure is accurate but Anthony Bordain is also a great person and No Reservations is a great show so I feel they may be accurate.

In the UK at least it's harder to get to university if you've quit once, as they start to question your motivation. That's what I've gathered from friends' experiences. In Finland it's pretty much "meh whatever come on right up", but some programmes, especially ones that have an interview part might put you under more pressure. I think it's as long as you're able to see how the previous experience has benefitted you, it's all a-ok.

Huh? No it's not. Not here, at least. You've been once before, you've got more evidence that you can use. It's easier the second time around.

Over here, huge advantages are given to first-time, directly-out-of-school students. There simply isn't enough space in the top universities to accommodate everyone. If you're a second-time student, you better have excellent references or an excellent motivation. Especially so if you don't finish your degree the first time round for whatever reason.

It's not impossible, of course. A friend of mine did three back-to-back degrees (with his professor's letter of reference, to be fair). Another friend switched degrees twice before he settled on one (he was already "in", so to speak. It's easier then). But if you drop out, leave and then apply again later, it's gonna be hard.

Oh, I'm talking specifically about your average day-class in-student universities here. The so-called "distance" universities are generally open to everyone who can pay, of course. It's not a bad choice over here, though. I'm seriously considering doing my MBA through one.

Huh. Well, here, getting in straight after school is tough, but if you wait a while, it becomes easier and your final school score (OP) doesn't matter as much. This is one reason gap years are pretty popular here.

I think it's completely alright to have an interview when it's a subject where you're required to work with people. They kind of put you under slight pressure and just test your motivation, I'd say.

I kind of want to get braces so all of my teeth can be fixed (overcrowding), but this is something that can't be fixed with braces as the issue seems to be entirely in my bite/jaw position. And it's kinda severe.

Magical fog has returned. It lasted all day before yesterday, and it looked truly wonderous to my eyes, with seas of floating light and a world dissolved in the distance (or as a good friend of mine remarked, as a game with too short render distance), but today it was gone all day before the evening. Now, however, the world is once again immersed in this sound-dampening fluid, a cool blessing for my tired ears.

I think it's completely alright to have an interview when it's a subject where you're required to work with people. They kind of put you under slight pressure and just test your motivation, I'd say.

*shrug* No idea. My jaws have kinda always been a bit crunchy, but lately I've had to crack them about 20 times a day. The dentist asked if I grind my teeth, but I don't, at least that I know of it...

*catches sympathies*

I kind of want to get braces so all of my teeth can be fixed (overcrowding), but this is something that can't be fixed with braces as the issue seems to be entirely in my bite/jaw position. And it's kinda severe.

Well I mean I had the issue where my bottom jaw extended further then my top jaw, so we put a quad helix on the top jaw to help push it out. I figured that there might be something like that for you, right? That or they have to break and then reset your jaw...which would hurt a lot and take awhile but WOULD work, presumably.

Either way, the situation sucks and I hope it gets better sooner rather then later x_X

So for some reason and somehow my idea of sewing together some wizard robes turned into sewing together a tunic instead. >.>
I dunno...

Thinking about my Advent Time Avatars for this year has been a tad stressful. My last year's idea, and many thanks to Cuth for creating it, was really good, but I have no idea what to pull out my sleeve for next week. And I really should get started, since I've planned to make all this by myself.

Ooh, awesome.

I've never crocheted before. I have knitted a few scarves before. My very long Slytherin-coloured scarf curls in on itself though, since knitting apparently tends to do that. Grandma crocheted the edges of the other one so it wouldn't do it, but I have no idea where that scarf went.

Today I learned that there is a thing called "The Day My Bum Went Psycho" and witnessed a review of a cartoon that ends with (I am not kidding here) every bathroom on earth revealing itself to be an alien, and leaving earth for good because one person abused his bathroom privileges.

...

My mind needs a rest...

Yeah, the Day my Bum Went Psycho is the first book in a trilogy by Andy Griffiths. I've read them at some point.

Fog is very awesome like that. I like to be outside in the fog.
I don't own a car, so I get everywhere by walking (and public transport, of course) so I don't particularly have to worry about seeing more than a few feet in front of me. I really like seeing the floating lights.

Not quite so thick, but I also like fog which I can see the outlines of trees through. It doesn't get foggy where I am at the moment very often though.

I have no idea how scary that could be as it's only happened to me in a car when someone else was driving and it was on a country highway. So, not a lot of cars.

Duck999

I wasn't driving the car either, but it was a highway where you would not be able to see other cars. I think I saw maybe two cars pass us going the other way, but only because of headlights. I also may have missed a lot. I don't think the highway was that popular, but it was the time of year where people would be traveling down that road. (It was winter and we were on the way to a ski resort.)

I had an experience like that in perfectly clear weather once. Was driving home from University to my mother's house and, due to various reasons, found myself heading north on the A1 at around 2am. I remember to this day coming to a stretch of road that had absolutely no other cars on it, no lights on the road, and no lights visible in the surrounding countryside--I was driving in total blackness apart from the piece of road that was illuminated by my headlights. I'm sure people who live in less populated countries than the UK would think that entirely normal, but here, it counts as one of the most eerie couple of minutes' driving I've ever done!

Maybe. I'm actually carrying my camera on me at all times since my trip, but I'm a little afraid it might not stick very well on film. Also, it's a very rare occurrence...

Well, it wasn't all too thick, but you could perhaps see at most 200 metres at most in the day (in the evening, the darkness made lights visible from a longer distance), so more nearby trees still had quite distinct silhouettes.

Aww, that's the best part of driving. When the whole world is nothing more than a greyscale cone fixed ahead of you, it's features slowly drifting into view and soon flashing out again as they pass by your side, all set to the soundtrack of the engine's gentle humming, and a two years old pop song on the radio.

The thing is, when there is that much fog, you can't really tell if there are cars everywhere. When the fog was receding it became clear, but while the fog was there, it was just as scary as if there had been cars everywhere. For all you know, there could be.

I have been a passenger in a car driving through almost entirely empty land once. There are very few houses, and there is a ton of space in between them. If you look out, you are very unlikely to see any sign of other people, except an occasional house. I can see how that could be eerie in a well populated area.

I used to (though not anymore) live in an area like that. Specifically, I grew up in the middle of a forest. Nearby there were a lot of cow farms and between my house and various relatives' houses there were miles and miles of nothing but grass and grazing cattle. Maybe a house here or there.

Rohirrim is actually a Sindarin collective noun meaning roughly "People of the Horse-Lords". Removing the collective suffix gets "Rohir", which is probably as close to a singular noun for "a person from Rohan" as we'll get.

I go to where my mother is from sometimes, and that is where there is the open land. Even in the middle of the town, where there are houses all around, you can see so much of the night sky. I will go outside at night and I consider seeing a few constellations a lot. When I visit the other town, I can go outside at night and see everything, including the milky way occasionally.

Oh, pets. I'm trying to imagine the difference between a cat doing that and a dog doing that, ER, and it's kinda lulzy. XD

In another Oh, Pets, moment, we went to the humane society today because we'd been thinking about getting another dog to keep ours company for a while and there's a discount on adoption fees on Black Friday around here.

Man, though. I think I was spoiled by the humane society back home, because although there were a lot of dogs there, it was also a lot more spacious and the barking was much less concentrated.

Unfortunately it seems like our dog has... forgotten how to other dog or else the humane society was triggering too many traumatic memories from before he was adopted by us, and he wouldn't interact with the other dogs at all as part of the required portion of the adoption process.

So it looks like we really do need to try finding the local dog parks and seeing where he's at with socializing with other dogs in a more relaxed setting.

I wore my Schrodinger's Cat T-Shirt and had to explain who Schrodinger was to the nice lady sitting in the Cattery when I went to visit with the felines while the paperwork was being filled out. So that was interesting. Also got kicked in the fact by a very exhuberant dog, and I think there's still dirt on there after washing it several times. XD

If we take the boiling point of Nickel at 42 atmospheres, divide by the speed of light, divide again by the gravitational acceleration of Saturn, divide yet again by the square of the average mass of an African Elephant, and multiply by seven Martian years, what is the result in Kelvins per square newton?

So this morning I woke up in an empty house (as I usually do; my housemates work unhumanly early times). And when I got out of the house, the streets were empty. No people, no cars. My neighbours weren't there. It was seriously like something out of The Walking Dead. I was actually relieved when I came across the first car on the road  It was just that moment, I guess.

Oh! And we are having scheduled power cuts here in the Mother City. This is somehow nothing new, anymore. They're working on one of the power plant's turbines, or something? Anyway. We were in a bar on Saturday, when the power went out. The staff immediately brought out little oil lamps for each table, and a row of candles all the way to the bathrooms in the back. It was actually really cozy! Make the best out of every situation, that's what we're all about.

And I met someone! Am very giddy at present. (Now to find out if she's straight, single and even interested. This stuff is hard :smalltongue:)

They are beautiful. I'm seriously considering getting one (or would be, if there were any available around here also, heh.). I'd probably just end up calling it Twilight or something though, continuing the naming convention I've had with pets for the past... 20 years? Something.

That stretched-curd thing... is it possible to do that multiple times for the same cheese, aging for a while in-between? Because it would be interesting to try making what start as four cheeses (one using each cow, buffalo, goat, and sheep milk) with the same culture, then (while stretching) combining them in sets of two: cow+buffalo and goat+sheep. After that, they could be aged a while and then stretched again, this time combining them into just one. Next, age it some more, do the injection-thingy that makes it bleu, age a while longer, and cold-smoke it.

Most complicated cheese ever!

You can only stretch at the beginning. But it's a fun idea.

If we take the boiling point of Nickel at 42 atmospheres, divide by the speed of light, divide again by the gravitational acceleration of Saturn, divide yet again by the square of the average mass of an African Elephant, and multiply by seven Martian years, what is the result in Kelvins per square newton?

Anyone feel like actually calculating this? Maybe coming up with an even more ridiculous math problem afterwards?

If you give me all the constants, sure. There is no way in hell I remember enough fluids stuff to work out the nickel one, though, and I don't really feel like looking the others up.

Is the dimensional analysis even correct?

Is the dimensional analysis even correct?

Well, we've got "boiling point of Nickel at 42 atmospheres, divide by the speed of light, divide again by the gravitational acceleration of Saturn, divide yet again by the square of the average mass of an African Elephant, and multiply by seven Martian years", which is (((temperature/velocity)/acceleration)/mass)*time, which works out as:

Using the following symbols to represent units:
temperature: T
time: s
distance: m
mass: kg
force: N

T/vel = T*s/m = x
x/acl = x*s^2/m = T*s^3/m^2 = y
y/mas = y/kg = (T*s^3)/(kg*m^2) = z
z*tim = z*s = (T*s^4)/(kg*m^2)

-assuming I've done this right. It's late and it's been a while.

Whereas "Kelvins per square newton" (disregarding the fact that "square newton" is meaningless except in weird dimensional analysis) works out as:

T/N^2 = T/(kg*m/s^2)^2 = T/(kg^2*m^2/s^4) = (T*s^4)/(kg^2*m^2)

So, strictly speaking, no. I'm pretty sure ender meant "square of the average mass of an African Elephant" to be kg^2, however, even though that isn't strictly correct in how he worded it. Not that a kg^2 unit really makes much sense, mind, but that isn't really the point of these exercises. The difficulty is likely going to be in finding some way to actually represent it in a way we'd find meaningful.

Doesn't your sleeping bag has that cord for shrinking the hole at the opening? And if the lock slides, a knot on the cord just above it should prevent that as well. Of course, I hope you enjoy the life of a juvenile butterfly after that, because it's definitely nothing for claustrophobics... http://i.imgur.com/rcxULF7.png

It sticks to wire insulation/plastics well and stretches, so if you need that for something, I suppose you could use it. Wikipedia has this to say on the matter:

As it is easily torn by hand, can be written on, and generally removes from smooth surfaces cleanly, it is useful for a number of other applications such as labelling (including colour-coding) and temporarily attaching objects to one another. It can be torn by hand or cut with tools.

Only for a little bit for feeling what you felt when you wrote it. Having a cheap hobby and enough small money to do it and enough free or cheap internet and book lessons is a big help. Today was a productive day, but not a particulary efficient one. Everything in my life is currently set to the backdrop of a looming sense of inexplicable dread, which can produce... curious... effects...

My only way of escaping it so far has been through complete escapism. I have a little bunch of that at hand currently, thankfully, but it doesn't resolve anything. I'm looking for causes, but so far, I haven't come up with much more than "stress, maybe", and so I keep toiling away at my mostly-on-schedule assignments in hope that getting done with them will solve it.
