I've been wondering what ways there are to increase speed, and what the fastest possible movement speed is, both self generated and with buffs from others involved.

So far, I have:
Barbarian 5 (+10 feet)
Monk 2 (+10 feet)
Monk 6 (+15 feet)
Monk 10 (+20 feet)
Monk 14 (+25 feet)
Monk 18 (+30 feet)
Druid Wildshaping (not sure what the fastest form is, though)

Mobile (Feat) (+10 feet)

Cunning Action (Dash as Bonus Action)
Expeditious Retreat (Dash as Bonus Action)

I would love to know what else I am missing!

Going with Wood Elf gives you a base speed of 35, which I believe is the fastest base speed in the game.

Also, adding in a couple of levels of Rogue would bring on Cunning Action, which allows you to Dash an additional time per round as a bonus action, increasing the speed dramatically. (EDIT: I see you mentioned Cunning Action, but you didn't mention any Rogue levels).

Cunning Action is only available to those who take Rogue 2, which your build is missing. Additionally, it doesn't work well with Step of the Wind (Monk) and Expeditious Retreat (Buff) because they all use bonus actions.


Two levels of Fighter will give Action Surge allowing you another Action and bonus action to dash.

You don't need another bonus action, because you can use your Action Surge to Dash.

I actually worked out the top speed once before. It requires outside buffs but the fastest you can go is just under 120mph or 150mph depending on how/if your DM lets Wildshape stack with other abilities. Here is all of the stuff from my notes:

5 Barbarian, 10 Monk, 2 Fighter, 2 Druid
Base Speed: 75' base speed, 85' with Longstrider (outside buff), 95' with Transmuter's stone (outside buff). 190' with dash, 285' with bonus action dash, 380' with action surge dash, 950' with haste (outside buff) 1045' with maneuvering attack (Outside buff)

Warhorse: 60'
Base Speed: 100' base, 110' with Longstrider (outside buff), 120' with Transmuter's stone (outside buff). 240' with dash, 360' with bonus action dash, 480' with action surge dash, 1200' with haste (outside buff) 1320' with maneuvering attack (Outside buff)


Also worth mentioning is this guy which is entirely self-contained and is fast and can also jump like a madman:

3 Rogue, 6 Wizard, 2 Fighter, 4 Monk, 5 Barbarian (Wood Elf, 20 Str, 20 Dex, Mobile feat)
Jump: 13' high. 26' high with 1 Ki point, 39' high with Jump spell, 78' high with both Ki and Jump spell, x3 (234') with Boots of Striding and Springing
Speed: 75' base speed (Transmuter's stone), 85' with Longstrider. 170' with dash, 255' with bonus action dash, 340' with action surge dash, 850' with haste

giant eagle have an 80 fly speed

after haste exhausted 300'

edited was missing mobility and extended durations were off removed wood elf as it replaces base walking speed doesn't add 5 to speed. added distance able to travel per round after haste wears off.

Expeditious Retreat (dash plus extra bonus action)
- Self-obtained through Magic Initiate

So a pure Monk can (with a few party buffs) move at:

35+30+10+10=85 BASE, Double when Hasted, which in single round nets him:

170 (action)+170 (ER dash)+170 (ER bonus dash)+170 (Haste action)+85 (reaction)=765 feet

Heck, even without a party, assuming the Monk can find someone to cast Haste into his spell storing ring, he can move 600 feet in a single round. He just loses the Transmuter and Battle Master buffs.

Yeah but with out said spell storing ring and someone to cast haste into it, the way of the four elements monk is stuck with:
(60(Ride the wind)+10(mobility)+30(unarmored movement))*(3 actions(move+dash+step of the wind)) 300'

Other monks are stuck with
(35+10(mobility)+30(unarmored movement))*(3 actions(move+dash+step of the wind)) 225'

Arcane trickster can do:
(35+10(mobility)+10(longstrider))*2(haste)*(4 actions(move+dash+cunning+haste))=440'

the speeds range from 260' = 29 mph to 1300' = 147 mph
