View Full Version : Swift Actions For the Mundane classes

I find the mundane classes have alarmingly few options to use their swift actions, and was hoping the playground could help me either identify potential uses, or help me brainstorm some new ones.

At present, I only have two ideas

+5 ft movement (must be used in addition to a move action, and this movement provokes an attack of opportunity, and is in addition the 5 ft step that provokes no attack of opportunity.)
When two weapon fighting, as a swift action, you may attack with the weapon in your off hand. You may not use this option if you take a full attack action, or other full round action.

So Playgrounders, hit me with your best ideas and critiques.

Tome of battle has boosts, which are swift actions.
Skill tricks are also usually swift actions.

outside of that, not that many.

I guess a few could be:
-Increase shield AC
- Increase Dodge AC
-feint with a weapon
-trip an additional target within reach (wave strike from PF)
-Grant shield AC to ally
- limited bullrush
- extra attack after successful disarm.
-increase accuracy of an attack
-increase damage of an attack
-limited distance tumble
-spur a mount to move faster than normal
-jump (already considered a manuever)
- scramble up a wall using a reduced climb check
- Clothesline (unarmed attack if moving past a foe and they miss AoO)
-increase range of thrown/missile attack
-cleave into an additional enemy in reach.
-heal checks to stablize bleeding word.
-bypass shield bonuses to target's AC.
-reduce miss chance by a fraction on the attack.
-poison a weapon (possible with certain equipment)
-increase DR/(x)
-increase DC of attacks that require saves.
-switch places with adjacent Ally
- fear affect shout
- rally effect will to increased save
-prepare a counter to a phyiscal attack
-increase DC required to make a defensive casting/ shooting check
-give spell failure chance to injured spellcasters

Style Feats are a swift to activate. Many items are as well, and so are some class features like rage powers.

If you add in ToB/PoW you get a lot more - stances and boosts are swifts and are capable of a variety of effects.

You could probably homebrew some ad-hoc uses up but I don't think it's necessary.

Yes they are.

Don't use them, you filthy monk.

Hey, Brawlers can take Pummeling Style too.

But you do sort of have a point. Pummeling Style/Charge is useful enough that you're probably going to want to stay in it all the time, thus obviating the need to spend a swift action to change styles. Sure, Dragon Style can be good for the mobility, but it's better to just get a fly speed and hang on to your pseudo-Pounce.

I don't understand by what you mean by that. :smallconfused:

I think to do that you Dip 1 in Monk and 1 in styles fighter. Then you go into Vivisectionist or Synthesist and take Feral Combat Training. Make the Bigger Fish slam build.

One thing I've thought of is to allow you to use a standard action to perform a swift and a swift to perform a move. Neatly handles the problem of the ubiquitous spirit lion totem dip.
