Would a Psionic Factotum variant be too strong? Replacing Arcane Dilettante for something like Psionic Dilettante, or so...

One thing to consider is that, as PLAs, their abilities would automatically be augmented up to maximum.

Assuming they aren't instead given a PP reserve and limited repertoire of powers, probably drawn from the Psion list.

With that, though, they could take PP-boosting feats/items and take advantage of those.

A PP reserve and powers would open them up to even more potential abuse, e.g. getting a psicrystal.

I would give them specific PLAs and simply build in some kind of augmentation cap, similar to what dorjes do.

But you don't need PP reserves or powers just to get a psicrystal. All you need is ML 1, and according to CPsi, Manifester levels derived from PLAs count for prerequisites.

From Complete Psionics, page 48:

In the context of a feat or prestige class requirement, a
manifester level prerequisite (such as "manifester level 5th")
measures the character's ability to generate a minimum amount
of psionic power. It is a measure of the strength of a character's
psionic talent. Creatures that use psi-like abilities can qualify
for feats or prestige classes requiring a minimum manifester
level, provided they meet it. For example, Craft Universal
Item has a requirement of manifester level 3rd
