What is the point of flesh to stone? Flesh to ice is a level lower and things immune to petrification are not immune to it as it doesn't turn the target to stone.

Temporal Statis can be used on someone on your side when they are about to die. It is also useful for dealing with Tarrasque-like problems, which can't be killed. Simply TS someone, tie a few iron balls to them, then throw their inert body in a volcano. Sure, they are not dead, but it'll be very, very, hard for anyone to bring them back.

He's arguing that flesh to stone can do all that and is lower level without material component..

Spell descriptors? Someone immune to "earth" type spells or polymorph/petrification spells wouldn't be immune to temporal stasis - which is reason enough for the higher level, perhaps?

Temporal Stasis is the safe option, if you don't want your prisoner to erode over the millennia or simply get smashed. That's quite a bit more powerful than simply suspending them.
