Scion of Thanatos

The Scions of Thanatos are warlocks who have learned eldritch secrets of death. They have crossed over to the other side of the grave, tainting their souls with the power of necromancy. These tainted warlocks can call up armies of the undead at a moment’s notice, break even the strongest of revenants to their will, and destroy the very souls of those who oppose them. Warlocks are feared by almost all who see them, whether rightfully or not–and the dark power of the Scions is part of the reason why.

Class Features
All the following are class features of the Scion of Thanatos prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency
You gain no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Invocations
Whenever you gain a new Scion of Thanatos level, except at 2nd, 6th, and 10th levels, you gain new invocations known, and an increase in caster level as if you had also gained a level in an invocation-using class to which you belonged before you added the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained.

Corpsecrafter (Ex)
At 1st level, you gain the Corpsecrafter (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Corpsecrafter,LM) feat as a bonus feat. Its effects apply to undead you create through the The Dead Walk invocation, even though it is not a necromancy spell. In addition, if you gain any feats that have Corpsecrafter as a prerequisite, their effects also apply to undead created through your invocations.

Rebuke Undead (Su)
At 1st level, you gain the power to rebuke the undead. Your effective cleric level for rebuking is equal to your Scion of Thanatos class level plus your Warlock class level.

Eldritch Blast (Su)
At 2nd level, and each subsequent even level, the damage dealt by your eldritch blast increases by 1d6.

Necromantic Prowess (Su)
At 2nd level, your eldritch powers of reanimation improve. Whenever you use your The Dead Walk invocation to reanimate a creature, you may choose to reanimate it as a ghoul. You must use 50 gp per HD of the reanimated creature, rather than 25 gp, worth of black onyx as a material component if you wish to make the invocation permanent. If you do not, then the undead crumbles to dust after 5 rounds/caster level, rather than 1 minute/caster level.

Eldritch Rebuke (Su)
At 3rd level, you gain greater control over the undead. Whenever you rebuke undead, you may expend two daily uses of that ability instead of one. If you do, any undead that would be rebuked are instead commanded. This does not alter the limitation on the number of undead you can control.

Defiling Presence (Sp)
At 5th level, you gain the ability to use unhallow at will as a spell-like ability, with caster level equal to your own. In addition to the normal effects of the unhallow spell, time spent in the area of this effect is halved for purposes of the duration of your The Dead Walk invocation. However, you may not tie spells to sites unhallowed with this ability. If you use this ability a second time while a previous unhallow effect is still present, the previous effect ends.

Greater Necromantic Prowess (Su)
At 6th level, you can raise even more powerful and intelligent undead. Whenever you use your The Dead Walk invocation to reanimate a creature, you may choose to reanimate it as a ghast, mummy, or shadow. You must use 50 gp per HD of the reanimated creature, rather than 25 gp, worth of black onyx as a material component if you wish to make the invocation permanent. If you do not, then the undead crumbles to dust after 5 rounds/caster level, rather than 1 minute/caster level.

Evil Dead (Su)
At 7th level, you can invoke infernal energy with your necromancy. Whenever you create an undead with your The Dead Walk invocation, you may choose to apply the fiendish template to it, even though undead cannot normally be made fiendish. A fiendish undead is treated as having two additional HD for purposes of determining how many undead you can control.

Ghostly Form (Sp)
At 9th level, you can become an ethereal, ghost-like creature. You may use ethereal jaunt at will as a spell-like ability, with caster level equal to your own. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 2d6 minutes before you can use it again.

Eldritch Necromantic Prowess (Su)
At 10th level, you become a true master of necromancy. Whenever you use your The Dead Walk invocation to reanimate a creature, you may choose to reanimate it as a mohrg, spectre, or wraith. You must use 50 gp per HD of the reanimated creature, rather than 25 gp, worth of black onyx as a material component if you wish to make the invocation permanent. If you do not, then the undead crumbles to dust after 1 round/caster level, rather than 1 minute/caster level.

This might blend well with my Necrolock (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1745177) (that's a terrible name compared to yours, I know).

Good flavor. Have you considered giving +1 invocation level at every level though? There are enough full spell casting PrCs to justify it.

The full spellcasting PrC's are in the wrong, newer classes generally lose a level or two, and if they don't then they should. (Not trying to be rude, just saying that PrC's are supposed to have a cost).

Rebuke undead could use some rewording, since you use "level of invocation-using class" elsewhere.

Quite possibly the best Warlock PrC ever made. It has a common theme, it has Invocation progression, but not a full progression, to make it balanced, and the abilities are just nifty.

One thing: on Defiling Presence, rather than being able to cast it as a spell-like ability at will, why not just give him an Aura of Desecration (or Aura of Unhallow, perhaps) like the True Necromancer has? As written, a single Scion of Thanatos could defile half a country in a single week, just by traveling and dropping down an Unhallow at regular intervals...

Pretty nice- the warlock doesn't get enough support, and this works, especially for warlock baddies.

Also, nice touch with 'evil dead'.
*Chainsaw-hand*

The only thing that doesn't make flavor sense to me is the ghostly form- none of the classe's abilities are tied to ghosts at all, it can't create ghosts, etc...perhaps a shadow form, or a form that grants certain aspects of the undead?

Nope - the way it's worded, he can only have one Unhallow active at a time.

Huh. The way I read it, I thought it meant if there's already an unhallow in the area, this new unhallow will cancel the previous one.

Right-o. Nifty as unhallowing the whole world would be, I wasn't gonna give it to these guys.
