Nar Shaddaa. Not so much a wretched hive of scum and villainy as a bustling and active hive of scum and villainy.

You'd landed here a few days ago, looking for work and a place to hole up. The last job had gotten very active when Durgis discovered that the cargo you'd been paid to move was not, strictly speaking, owned by your employer. Worse, the REAL owner was apparently rich enough and motivated enough to hire bounty hunters to track you down and take it back. Several astronavigational twists and turns, two intense gunfights, and one turn impersonating a troupe of dancers later, you'd completed the job and decided that it was time for some quiet.

The steamy rusting smell of Nar Shaddaa hits you as you all wake up in the cramped side room you are renting from the Transdoshans that own the docks. Outside, the garbage skiffs are moving with their customary slow pace, bringing a clatter that almost drowns out the hubbub of the street above you. It's going to be an uncomfortably moist day, from the rippling gray skies above.

Heading up into the docks, you all stop for a quick breakfast at one of the dock foodstands (the Jawa running it was uncharacteristically silent when you'd asked what kind of meat it was) before heading over to your docked ship. Over the past few days, Zanak and Aayla had been going over the old rustbucket to figure out why the environmental controls had abruptly decided to switch to a setting best described as "Mustafar's Moist A**hole". Durgis had spent the days making calls to try and make things right with the owner you'd pissed off, leaving Alistair and Magnus on sentry duty (which usually translated to "catching up on Twi'lek soap operas").

So it was to have been today. Zanak and Aayla would have finished taking apart the starboard air circulators, Durgis would have made some wheedling calls to a "respectable" businessman on Corellia, and Alistair and Magnus would have discovered whether Jans would go through with marrying M'tak even though Rassp had threatened to kill himself if she didn't run away with him (Spoilers: she wouldn't).

All of this was to be disrupted by the arrival of your new client.

He was waiting by the door to your docking bay: a spindly-looking Bith with two medium-sized crates next to him. He was dressed in slightly frayed academician's robes, and clutched at a datapad with anxious energy. As you approach, he rushes over you.

"Ah, hello, yes, please, excuse me," he trills metallically in halting Galactic basic, "You are for hire, I hope? I am told that you might be able to get me where I need to go . . ."

Magnus

"Of course she'll do it, its almost too good a deal to refuse. I swear it will go that way for a better plot. You know they'll spend three episodes on talking him down from killing himself." Fingers interlaced behind his head, he comments almost boredly on the soap opera coming through the vid. After a bit when the others start to leave to check on the ship, Magnus follows, if only for the conversation.

"As long as the crates aren't full of Rodian slave girls, you might have found what you're looking for," Magnus looks at the Bith quickly, then his crates, then scans the closest part of the crowd and few balconies for threats- he had always been paranoid since that invasion, better if they don't get the drop on them for their lack of attention. If nothing else, his blaster pistol was a comforting weight against his thigh.

"Zanak did you clean the air scrubber filters?! I still smell that... that... that smell in the cockpit and in the hold." Aayle said, popping her head out of an access hatch underneath the Smoke Screen. Her blue lekku hung down from her head as she was sort of suspended upside down for a moment until she realized that they had a client. She swung down gracefully, like the dancer she'd once trained to be and landed on the duracrete landing pad's floor. "Where to?"

The Bith looks uncertainly at Magnus, and then nods.

"Ah, yes, witticism. No, no, only archaeological implements! Excavators, unit cleansers, stratigraphic analytic tools, sample storage, all here!" he buzzes, patting fondly at his two crates.

"As for destination . . . er, it is not the popular place to go."

He leans in and whispers so that only you all can hear it.

"You have heard of Korriban, yes?"

Magnus

Crossing his arms and tilting his head slightly to the side, Magnus says, "Wouldn't be going if there wasn't a paycheck in it, I'd bet. Who told you we're for hire again? That determines quite a lot of how this will go." Magnus isn't trying to be too standoffish, but someone has to be a hardass when the group's rep and creds might get put on the line. Really, he will appreciate the work after the downtime. Eating better than they have been is nothing to sniff at either.

Thinking to himself, he wonders if Marquand sent him their way. If it was him, he probably oversold what they have. Again. He swore in his head he would have to have a talk with him about doing that. That damn Aqualish never listens. Good guy, just doesn't listen when we tell him to keep it quiet.

Zanak was covered in grease. While Aalya had given him the job of "assistant mechanic", his lack of technical background meant that he spent most of the time holding things in place, or doing the dirtier, more mundane work of keeping a starship running.

"Look, I'm telling you, she knows that Wallak has been a Rodian the whole time," he said, pulling a thin twig from his jacket pocket and placing it in the corner of his mouth. A twig from the malalu bush acted as a mild stimulant--and a somewhat more addictive narcotic--when chewed.

He fixed the Bith with an unfriendly stare as it made its offer.

Korriban, of course everyone had heard of it even if only in passing. While the Chiss had once allied with Korriban it was not something that they liked to be reminded of. "Korriban you said right? My blue friend makes a excellent point and passage to Korriban comes at a premium my friend. We don't work for charity and theirs expenses to think of" Hopefully enough to cover our debt from our last botched "pay day" and have enough left over to at least get rid of the smell in our ship thought Alistair to himself. "You have enough afford us right? If we're heading to that place then we really would need to know what's in those crates prof. for sure. You'd be surprised how many people fake shipping manifests and other documents. We have to pack it correctly you know. It really would be ashame if something happened to it or you or especially us on the way to Korriban you read me?"

The Bith draws himself to his full height (not that considerable) under Alistair's sudden aggressive tone.

"I shall pay anything you require, sir, but I certainly doubt that Mister Marquand will continue to recommend you then. My research may very well blow the field of Old-Republic-Era Sith Archaeology wide open! Now, what do you say to that?"

Damn Marquand, he resists pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head at the mention of that name, I swear he tries to send trouble our way.

"Well, if Marquand sent you our way, there must be some merit to it. We do need to check the boxes though, proper declarations on shipping manifests will aid us quite a bit on passing the few blockades on the way and if you have anything to hide, we would much prefer to know now, rather than later." Magnus says this just as a matter of fact, paperwork might be dren at the best of times, but it might keep them out of trouble. Some of it, anyway.

"Yes, good, quite!" he nods, somewhat more agreeably to the others, "Crates can be perused at your leisure, no question. Might I store my equipment in your ship prior to our departure, whenever that may be? Unless you have loose ends you are wishing to-"

As he speaks, you all start to feel a tickle in the back of your mind. You've all had plenty of experience with trouble, and something in your gut is telling you that trouble might be closer than you think . . .

You hear them before you see them: the tramp-tramp-tramp of boots striding purposefully down the halls of the spacedock. There are five thugs, of various species, coming at you with blaster pistols in hand and thuggish looks firmly affixed to their faces. You wouldn't normally notice them, but for the relatively small number of people around in the early morning that makes them easily visible even at MEDIUM RANGE. Likewise, you CERTAINLY wouldn't have noticed the armored figure lurking a LONG RANGE distance behind them, lining up an illegal-looking rifle for a shot at you. If you had to guess, you'd say you'd missed a bounty hunter from last job.

The Bith still doesn't quite see the danger, though. He peers up at Alistair, curiously.

"Apologies, what did you say?"

So, in case I didn't make it blindingly obvious: the thugs are at Medium range from you, and the bounty hunter is at Long range. You're in a spaceport, so there are stalls, crates, cargo, spare parts . . . any manner of thing! If you can give a reasonable description of what might be nearby and what you want to do with it, I'll allow it.

Magnus leans out to peg the troublesome Gammorrean, only to feel his new blaster wound given him a twinge as he overextends himself. Twitching involuntarily in response to the pain, Magnus accidentally knocks over one of the plasteel crates, denying himself cover! Snarling through the hurt, he manages to shoot the Gammorrean in his big fat gut, even as the Jawa lobs a steaming pile of mystery meat at him. The combined pain puts paid to the porcine thug.

Meanwhile, the Transdoshan was not expecting intervention! Alistair pounces at him like a cat, and the reptilian gangster moves too slowly, too late. There's a nice new scar along his eye now, and he's wearing a new frown to match it.

Magnus sends off a volley of shots at the bounty hunter. After some initial skittering, a blaster bolt gets him square in the chest. The bounty hunter wheels back, clearly winded.

Meanwhile, the two remaining thugs advance to Close Range, intent on bringing the fight over to Magnus. While the other lays down covering fire, one scarred Aqualish comes sprinting around a stall and lays into him with a truncheon.

The Bith gapes for a moment, torn between the desire for safety and the need for whatever was in those crates. "Aww, fer..."

Zanak whirled around and jogged back into the starship. He barged his shoulder on an airlock bulkhead, stumbling forward into the cockpit, where he swung himself up and over the back of the pilot's seat and into a sitting position. He flicked three or four switches with a confidence gained in imitation of Aayla, not in actual expertise.

"No different than a swoop," he muttered to himself, and pulled the yoke backwards. The ship slowly lifted off the ground, and began rock backwards, hovering out over where Magnus and the professor were lying, with the rear thrusters aimed at their attackers. The two thugs stared up at the craft with blank, uncomprehending expressions. The starship came to a halt, and Zanak activated the sub-light drive and hit the throttle.

One desperate dash, and everyone has made it into the ship. The Bith yowls pitifully as Alistair slings him over his shoulder, and the gunslinger feels a small but painful pop in his shoulder as he yanks the crate inward, but soon enough everybody is in the ship. As the doors close, you get a last glimpse at the bounty hunter firing wildly at you all, but not nearly accurately enough.

The ship slowly comes to life under Aayla's expert hands. Power conduits thrum. Engines rattle and roar to life. Generators throb. And the air . . . well, Aayla and Zanak had never quite managed to get those environmental controls fixed, so the air feels like a bantha enema. The Bith's eyes seem to be swimming as he sways against the crate he's leaning on.

"Ah . . . ahhh . . . oh, help . . . help me . . ." he murmurs and whines to himself.

Aside from your client's discomfort, the crates are in the loading bay, as are Magnus and Alistair and the Bith. Aayla and Zanak are in the cockpit. The ship hums with life, in defiance of the bounty hunter and the thugs shooting in utter futility outside.

Thinking back, you remember something that had passed you by during the gunfight. The bounty hunter had been using a Tenloss rifle. Now, Tenloss are illegal and have been for a while, but there are plenty of weaponeers out there who still work with the things. You haven't heard of any on Narr Shaddaa, but during the last job you'd pulled, the guy you'd ticked off had been a well-off arms smuggler . . .

The Bith looks at the two of you, confusion in his eyes.

"I promise, I do not know why anyone would attack me! Please, this is all that I am aware of: I have been studying Old-Republic-Era Sith mortuary practices since I became graduated from university. I am an adjunct professor at Correlia University at Coronet City, and I have been given a grant by the Hego Damask Institute for Antiquarian Study to do a small dig. I have wanted to do a direct study of Korriban from the time that I was an undergraduate, and this grant finally allows me to do so! Please, I . . . here . . ."

Fumbling in his pocket, he produces a holocron that shows a map of the planet's surface. After a brief view of the whole planet, it zooms in on what looks like a lumpy stretch of desert along the equatorial region.

"See here?" the Bith points excitedly at a series of blobs, "That is the Valley of the Dark Lords, one of the main burial areas on Korriban. Most of those tombs were heavily looted or damaged during the Clone Wars, but see HERE . . ."

The holocron image moves slightly, revealing a surface with fewer lumps. The Bith points out a number of other, smaller blobs.

"Based off of probe imaging and remote gammatometry, THIS looks to be a set of earthworks! The data are preliminary, but earthworks like these are at consistency with Late Old-Republic Era Sith tomb building practices! And there's NO record of it! This could be a vital find!"

His eyes are shining as he turns to you, and he abruptly quiets down as he sees your nonplussed faces.

"So, ah . . . nothing particularly worthy of a blaster bolt, no! Would someone have reason to attack YOU, perhaps? Gentlemen in your line of work perhaps draw the ire of unsavory characters," he counters, a smidge condescendingly.

With a sigh Alistair turns his head to Magnus.

The bith gingerly goes to the crate and picks up the box labeled "Comparative collection". He begins opening it up and carefully sorting through various artifacts, muttering to himself.

In the cockpit, Aayla's had an easy time of it. In-atmo flight over Nar Shaddaa isn't as marked out as in some of the Core Worlds, granted, but the on-faith nature of policing around the planet makes it pretty easy for an experienced pilot.

The tricky part comes when you break atmo. Nar Shaddaa has seen its share of dogfights and scrapes around its orbit, and the light dusting of junk that coats the outer gravity well attests nicely to that fact. It's a tricky thing, getting around some of the junk, and this is while calculating the route to Korriban (which isn't pre-set into your nav computer to begin with on account of WHY THE **** WOULD IT BE?)

Okay, so this'll require two things: One Average-difficulty piloting check, and one OTHER piloting check of unspecified difficulty. I'll calculate the difficulty myself based on how fast you're going on a scale of 1-3 (Aayla's call).

Aayla handily shimmies the ship through Nar Shaddaa's debris field. There's some bobbing and weaving, but anyone staring out a porthole will be able to appreciate the utter grace and skill displayed by the pilot of the Smoke Screen. It's hypnotic, almost, and the ship weaves into place for a hyperspace jump.

With some calculations on the fly, Aayla manages to get a close-enough-for-jazz set of coordinates for Korriban which SHOULD put you in orbit with the lone planet. As she punches them in, she sees an incoming hunk of old chassis bearing down on the ship. A lesser pilot might have simply moved the ship out of the way, but Aayla punches the throttle and slides into hyperspace at precisely the right moment. The jolt of acceleration slightly destabilizes everybody, but . . .

The engine room, ever a charming mess, now has a uniquely disastrous spin to it. One of the generators now has a fresh coating of vomit all over it, along with a rather nasty dent.

It is not difficult to identify the source of this vomit and dent.

There is a Rodian lying in the middle of the engine room floor, curled up in a fetal position and bleeding. He (?) is outfitted in light ceramic armor and carries a whole toolbelt full of nasty-looking implements of combat and sabotage. Judging by the open vent just behind him, it seems as though he'd been hiding in the walls when Aayla's fancy maneuvering had sent him flying out into the generator.

Once the prisoner was secured he'd see if he had any wounds or needed medical attention. "This sneaky little fellow is going to tell us all the answers that the prof couldn't answer. Who paid them to gun us and why"

Once they have the sabatour secured Alistair touches his finger to his ear comm and updates Aalya regarding their situation. "Aalya looks like we had a rat in the ducks down here. He did some damage but Magnus and I are on it. We secured the rat but we should have him looked at since he's thrown up all over the drive from your fancy flying...it's not helping the smell of our ship none"

The Rodian stirs and groans ineffectually as you take off his armor and weapons. He (definitely a he, now) thrashes drunkenly as you restrain him, but his coordination is not so good at the moment. As you work, the Bith hesitantly comes into the engine room and watches, eyes wide.

"I dun' . . . knowwww youuuuuuu . . ." the Rodian slurs a bit, with another light flailing. He's bleeding pretty heavily from the proboscis.

Meanwhile, up in the cockpit, Aayla's completed the hyperdrive jump. It's about sixty hours to Korriban, which gives her sixty hours away from the cockpit barring one HECK of an unprecedented emergency. She settles in, about to FINALLY relax, when she gets Alistair's comm message.

Aayla hits the comm with a alarmed, "What?!" And then she checks every gauge, dial and readout in the cockpit for some sign the ship is coming apart, but it all looks normal. Well, all normal except for the smell, she really had to get that fixed. "Be right there." She says with a sharp clip in her voice.

A few moments later she walks in on the Alistair tying up a Rodian in her Engine Room. "Who's that? And why is he on my ship?"

"Don't know who he is. Yet. Just that he snuck on the ship and I had some stuff handy to tie him up. Guess he was back behind those pipes in that really tiny hatch in the celing. Don't know why he wanted to get that close to the secondary air intake, insulation's been shot for a while now. Bet he got pretty cold." Magnus relayed some of it with what was no more than a shrug overlaid with mild curiosity.

"If he's trouble, we can always space him. From this height, just another thing burning up on reentry. Heh, I bet he burns pretty." Dark humor, for sure, but he was fine with sitting back for a little while and seeing how this all developed. Blaster close at hand, of course. Trouble seemed to be staying fairly close this run.

Unlike in the vids, it doesn't take very long for someone knocked out to come to. In short order, the Rodian is sitting up, approximately. At least, he looks conscious enough to answer any questions (although he's only managing to glower right now).

Aayla looks down at the Rodian, "Who are you? And, why are you on my ship?" where this goes from there depends entirely on how he answers each successive question.

Alistair

As Aalya finishes Alistair deploys one of his Vamblades and runs it along the floor near the sabotuers legs. "I'd recommend doing as the lady says friend. My pal here wants you to burn up over Nal Shadaa but we're not unreasonable here. We're in a business as I'm sure you can appreciate and in business it's all about who you know... and who you know is what we want to know Now you want to leave here presumably with all your skin still attached to your body and all of your blood still inside of you preferable. How you do that is by answering us. Now if you don't want to play bal I can turn you over to my friend here and he can show you just what the wrong side of a air lock looks like. Personally pick talking but it takes all kinds I suppose...your call friend"

The Rodian's proboscis seems to curl amusedly, even as his head sways back and forth.

"'A-'A-'A! Call this an interrogation? Patoki tol' us you were somethin', but I din't think pathetic! 'A-'A-'A"

Kaga Patoki is the name of the weapons smuggler you all had ticked off over this past job. A Verpine with a chip on his shoulder the size of a Rancor, he'd been in business with everybody from the Hutts to the Exchange. It was during your last run that you'd realized that the shipment of Kashyyyk Land Shrimp your employer had commissioned you to transport had in fact belonged to this man. After a wild ride with some angry bounty hunters, Alistair and Magnus had done their best Boondock Saints impression on Kaga, and you all had assumed the matter had ended. Your initial employer (a human named Ini Peek) had been killed, Kaga was dead, the bounty hunters had gone off in a huff, and you all had feasted on the Land Shrimp in celebration (and subsequently spent a few hours each on the toilet because, for all the supposed delicacy of a Land Shrimp, that s*** will come back on you).

It looks like things weren't QUITE as conclusive as you'd thought . . .

"I happen to have ideas best discussed out of earshot of 'polite' society, several of them likely showcasing mild to moderate insanity, all of them detailing very antisocial, very bad behavior. Believe me, you would much rather give the information willingly, as opposed to be handed to me.

Burning up on reentry would be your merciful death, for the war and my experience has taught me much, not much of it good. The truth will spill from you if you are left to me. Your screams will haunt this ship for ages. This is simply an unpleasant truth, not just an empty series of threats.

Giving up information quickly and accurately is the best help you can offer yourself. Do you need a moment to decide your fate, or was I clear enough?"

Aayla listened to the monologue Magnus, and then with a lok between Alistair, Magnus and the Rodian she then dismissively waved her hand in a sweeping motion. "Airlock him."

"Pity, I think we're high enough the oxygen'll just boil out of his blood before he burns. Watching him suffocate isnt nearly as fun. Sure I can't have some fun first? I have a few tools I want to break in." Magnus crosses his arms and leans against one of the drive nacelles, just waiting on orders. "Either way, just say the word and he's spaced."

"Come to think of it, would you mind getting me that rigging harness in case he gets fiesty? I just don't happen to have a spare grav chute and respirator handy. Maybe some impact glasses too. Safety first, right? Don't want to have to file a claim with workman's comp for something like that."

The Rodian looks amongst you all . . . and decides he doesn't like his odds.

"'Ey, 'ey, what! Are you stupid? What do you think Patoki'll do to you if you kill one of hers? Come ooooooon!"

He leans in earnestly.

"Listen, she ain't worth antagonizing! Come on, drop me off wherever you're headed an' I'll tell you anything you wanna know! Come ooooooon!"

Magnus plants his hands on the back of the chair the Rodian is attached to, leans it back, and starts to drag it towards the airlock. "Last chance to talk. Next stop is the surface of the planet or the viewscreen of some unlucky passing starship." He manages to clumsily shrug on the harness on the way there. Wouldn't want to get sucked out with the garbage, after all.

Aayla waits until Magnus is hauling the Rodian into the airlock before speaking again. "You say you'll tell us what we want to know, start telling. If its good we'll drop you off nice and safe somewhere. If not," She shrugged, in a manner suggesting she didn't care what happened to the green skinned stowaway.

When they arrived at the airlock door, she gave another set of instruction. "Mag, just lock him in there. I'll do the jettisoning, myself." Aayla was hoping the Rodian would spill his guts faced with eminent death by vacuum, she's say anything to keep from being sucked out an airlock without a vac suit on.

As he walks out of the airlock, Magnus punches a few commands into the pad by the door, closing and locking it and arming the manual override. He starts to take his hand away, "Heh, almost forgot to turn on the coms," an punches in another quick command to enable them.

Walking away from the airlock, he says to Aayla "He's all yours. Override is armed too, just pull the lever and he's spaced."

"Alright alright alright look! Look! Here's what I got! Mrs. Patoki, she's HACKED OFF at youse guys! Like, woah! She's pulled out all sortsa stops, got a bunch of nasty folks comin' at you. Kilo Markov, th' guy I was with? Ohh, he's just the tip of a naaaaaasty iceberg! They know your ship, your faces, your names, anything Mrs. Patoki could dig up!"

The Rodian's face in the airlock is unabashedly wheedling.

"Look, keep me alive, I'll stay in a bunk, not give ya no trouble. Once ya dock somewhere, jus' let me off and I'll tell ya everyone who's after you! I swear it, man! I SWEAR IT!"

Alistair

As the Rodian begs for his life Alistair listens to his words. He was fairly certain that Aalya was blufing but the situation was getting out of hand. Magnus' appetites had been a issue in the past and present and Alistair assumed that they would be an issue in the future but right now they had a job to do. As the Rodian finishes a longer than comfortable silence settles and the confidence that Alistair had that Aayla was bluffing about spacing the sabotuer. Alistair moves next to Aalya and puts his back to the airlock, leans in, and speaks low so that the Rodian can't hear him.

"Alright Aalya you've had your fun, it's time to end this. There's no profit in spacing this sack but if we turn him we can at least gain something in the long run." Alistair looks her in the eyes as the silence decents again. "We can be better people than this. We've never been hero's but we don't need to be villans."
