Olaf the Handsome stamped his feet and blew on his hands, rubbing them vigorously to get the blood flowing again. He sniffed and sneezed, his breath coming out in clouds of misty fog.

"Never seen it turn this cold so early in the month," he said to himself, peering at the blue water ahead. He stepped away from the ship's tiller at the rear and walked forward to look down at the centre of the deck.

"Ahoy down there! Looks like we're in for a bit of early frost. If you value your dangley bits you'll keep them well wrapped. And no fires either, those ropes in the rigging are tarred and they'll go up in a flash if you start mucking around with open flames. I'm thinking we're a day or two out of port and there's an island nearby if we need to make landfall. Now can one of you come up here and hold the tiller for me? I gotta piss like a racehorse and I ain't doing it here or frostbite's gonna take half an inch off."

In the sky above a lone seagull wheeled in lazy circles around the crow's nest, screeching in the hopes of scraps. The waves of the sea rolled gently around the boat, the wind pushing firmly against her mainsail. The deck rocked gently from side to side, cutting the crystal blue like a knife and kicking up plumes of white froth. A dolphin's shadow skimmed along five feet of the starboard bow, occasionally leaping into the air in playful joy.

'Sure thing, chief!'

Says Nicolaj as he eagerly jumps behind the boats rudder. His long warm coat is pulled up high covering his neck and half his face. It's clear from his stance he takes a bit too much enjoyment from steering the boat and sure enough he fancies himself captain of a mighty pirate ship for a moment when he closes his eyes.

'Wouldnt want you to have to piss sitting down for the rest of your life, after losing the last half inch!' He jokingly shouts to Olaf with a glint in his eye and a cheeky smile.

It's been an enjoyable voyage so far, and Nicolaj is in good spirits. He takes a deep breath and relaxes while he takes in the beauty of it all.

Most of the paladins Rhôn has met would pretend that wasn't funny, and certainly not acceptable behaviour. She, however, won't deny it. She will, however, continue throwing up over the side of the ship. She was excited to be on one for the first time and to see the ocean, but ...blegh.

Nicolaj takes the tiller in hand, holding it steady while Olaf heads for the head. The frosty, unnaturally cold winter air bites at his nose and hands through his thick furs, but doesn't detract from the joy of the scene. Far off in the distance his eyes spot a small blot of darkness on the horizon, no doubt the island Olaf mentioned. Judging from their course they'll pass quite near the land, and for a moment Nicolaj considers whether there might be dangerous shoals or sandbanks in the water. So far Olaf has proven to be competent enough a sailor, but his demeanor has been less that of a professional seaman and more like someone who may have once had a past involving piracy. In any case, he keeps his navigation tools and maps with him at all times, seeming in the habit of lacking trust in others even on a small vessel like this.

As Rhôn gives a final dry heave and wipes her mouth, Olaf strides up and claps her soundly on the back.

"Surprised you ain't thrown up your boots too by now, the way you've been going. We've had weeks and you still don't have your sea legs lass?" he chides, grinning with a mouth half full of yellowed teeth. Overhead the seagull caws and dives, picking up a chunk of something unidentifiable from the mess floating on the water beside the boat below Rhôn. It retreats to the top of the mast to enjoy its meal.

"If you need to lie down you feel free to go below. Heck, I'll even let you use my bunk. Perhaps I'll even join you in it," he says as he grins lecherously, absentmindedly picking at a scab on the back of his hand. "Ol'e pointy-ears looks like he's enjoying himself well enough over there, I think I could spare five minutes."

Rhôn grins through the queasy feeling in her gut...not knowing if it's sea sickness or the thought of this man touching her. "Five minutes? You sure you're up to it, old man?"

The grin on Olaf's face broadens, his eyes roaming up and down Rhôn's figure hungrily.

"Give me half a tick to siphon the python and I'll be there," he says, backing towards the hatch leading below decks.

He takes the steps down below with practiced ease, grabbing a nearby bucket and sighing with relief as he fills it. Then he scoops it up and walks back above deck, the bucket's warm contents steaming in the frosty air.

"That's good Nicolaj, you hold her steady as she goes!" he shouts up to the Sorcerer, pitching his waste over the side of the ship. Suddenly, a gurgling growl cuts through the air, and a slimy clawed hand appears on the railing in front of Olaf as he reels back from the monster!

The same instant, Nicolaj feels a tremendous jerk on the tiller, strong enough to nearly knock him flat.

Unstable Terrain - the rolling and movement of the deck below your feet increases the DC of any Balance or Tumble check by 5, and you must pass a DC 10 Balance check to run or charge. Failure by less than 5 means you fail to move. Failure by 5 or more means you fall prone.

(Nerjin, Dexter136: Since you haven't posted your character's actions yet I'll be assuming they're below deck. It will take you a move action to appear on the tactical grid, after which you may take a standard action if you wish.)

Please note you may roll any saves the enemy requires on your turn to save delays. The link gives the creature's AC for attack rolls, please also roll damage for each attack regardless.

Rhôn whirls at the sound of the growl, initially thankful for a distraction. However, when the reality of the situation hits her, the contents of her stomach finally settle into what feels like a deep pit. Wasting no time, she walks as quickly as the rocking ship will allow, retrieving her shield from her back then equipping it, to stand beside the lecherous (and delusional) old man.

Exactly as described. Moves to J6 with two move actions, drawing her shield during the first and arming it during the second. She is wearing her spiked gauntlets and therefor threatens.

Hearing the commotion from above Frae moves to the deck of the ship with Shia in tow. He had expected the trip to be uneventful and did not prepare for any excitement. Seeing the the creature climbing over the deck Frae turns to his wolf and snaps his fingers before pointing at Olaf.
"Protect him Shia."
Shia runs towards the creature climbing aboard the ship and Frae, not comfortable with the swaying of the ship, steadies himself and pulls out his sling.

I'm assuming that we appear in D3 or D4. Frae uses a free action to use handle animal to command Shia to defend olaf. He gets a +9 bonus on a DC 10 check, but I'll still roll it.

'Holy mother of Ty...!'
Nicolaj struggles to keep on his feet and grips the tiller tight. He strains to keep the ship under control.

Initially shocked, his mind is now racing. Did it come from the island? Maybe. But the island could prove paramount for survival should the ship fall prey. He decides he wants to keep options open and tries to keep the ship on course as it is, barely passing the island.
The jerk to the ship was weird too.. It occurs to him there might be more of these creatures about, and he immediately looks behind him and around him.
Sensing his masters stress, little Willbert scuttles out from Nicolajs sleeve and also peeks out over the ships deck alert for danger.

Keeping both hands firmly at the helm, Nicolaj has no attacks or spells to resolve.

Nicolaj senses the helm feels oddly loose under his grasp, like something may have happened to the rudder under the water.

The monstrous creature clings desperately to the side of the ship, shark-like teeth bared in a feral snarl. It seems it didn't appreciate its ambush being interrupted by a bucket bath. Seeing the path on both sides occupied by the defenders, it attempts to climb sideways and board next to Rhôn.

Rhôn's attack swings wide, punching the railing in front of the creature and sending splinters of wood flying. Shia, however, manages to bite solidly onto the creature's hand as it reaches for purchase, sinking teeth deeply into the flesh and causing green blood to ooze from the wound.

Nevertheless the creature manages to climb across the side of the ship and board, rising up to menace Rhôn with its claws. Now fully revealed, it appears to be human in shape, but with a fish's head full of sharp teeth and covered in slimy scales. A small bag of woven seaweed hangs from its side, the belt forming a rudimentary loincloth, but aside from this it is naked.

Olaf, finally shocked out of his inaction, withdraws a safe distance away to allow the armed adventurers to deal with the threat.

"Er, you don't suppose maybe we should have checked it was really dead? Ah well, I don't think it'll survive that long in the cold water anyway."

"Now the way I see it, we can go one of two ways. Either we stay on course and try to make it to Brownstone or we divert for the island. I'm throwing my lot in for the island. There's a small fishing village we can make for to lay up and make repairs. Place called Korfos or Courtous or something. I'll check my map but with the wind as mild as this we should be able to drift in to port without too much trouble. I'll need all hands available to help guide her without a rudder to steady. Seeing the kneeling priest beside her, it is obvious. "My thanks, brother Pelorian." Location: Korthos Island, Western Sea

Over the next eight hours the adventuring party labored with Olaf to wrestle the crippled vessel into port. It came limping in just as the sun began to set, more driftwood than sailboat. But finally, after the bitter cold of the open sea, the party could now enjoy an evening on solid land in a warm tavern with a pint of ale and a cooked meal.

The village itself was little much to look at. The port was the main feature, well sized in comparison to the rest of the town and filled with all manner of fishing vessels, most barely more than the size of a dinghy. The largest ship in port aside from theirs looked to be a merchant vessel, strange and out of place among the tiny fishing boats.

The rest of the village was composed of a scattering of simple thatch roofed houses, most with their own gardens to grow simple crops. Uphill from the docks a church or temple of some description watched over the town, and far in the distance there appeared to be a large manor house surrounded by a tall fence.

Then, surprisingly, was a wall fully encircling the village from the waterline on each side. The construction was a solid log palisade, and not to old either by the fresh appearance of the wood. Already the party could spy points of torchlight moving along the wall as guards patrolled the perimeter.

Olaf held a brief conversation with a guard that wandered over, curious about the new arrival. He explained his vessel's predicament and obtained permission to dock for repairs, but when he started to ask for assistance the guard began shaking her head and making emphatic gestures of denial. Eventually Olaf gave up in disgust and turned to find the party.

"Right, looks like we'll be here a while folks," he said, walking inside the warmth of the cabin and rubbing his hands to get the blood circulating. "The guard I just spoke with said we can lay up here in port until we do our repairs, but there's nobody available to help. Seems the town's had some trouble with the same creatures we got attacked by and nobody wants to be down on the waterfront if they can help it. The fishing business has become a high risk profession around here. I figure I can get the repairs sorted in a week or two at most, but I can only work on the rudder proper when the tide goes out, and bugger working in this cold for long anyhow."

"Anyway, if you want an inn there's one two blocks up the hill. Sign out the front is the Wavecrest Tavern, they have rooms and food. I'll be staying on the Maidenhead in case any of these local chuckleheads thinks it might be easier to make some coin lifting her cargo instead of catching fish, but you don't have to stay here if you'd prefer to get back on land again."

Rhôn is sorry about his ship, but she certainly won't be staying in it for the night. Highly interested about the opportunity to have cooked food and an actual bed, she leaves for the inn almost immediately. If anyone else decides to go as well, she will wait and walk with them, though. She wants to know more about the town's problems, and intends to ask the innkeeper about them when getting food and a room.

Arriving at the Wavecrest Tavern, the group walks into the common room. The place is cheerfully lit by a large fireplace at the rear of the room, a full log serving to roast the cold away from their bones. Tables are scattered through the room, many occupied by locals taking the opportunity to enjoy a mug of ale and a bowl of stew. At the entrance the long service bar is staffed by a barrel-chested man with a dark beard speckled with grey, and roaming the room serving the tables is a young woman of attractive looks and comely figure.

"Hail travellers," the tavern keeper says, walking around the bar and shaking their hands. "Heard news we had new folk arrive today. Come in and take a seat, I'm sure you're tired from your journey. You look like you had some trouble?" he says, nodding at Rhon's wounds. "But where's my manners. Welcome to the Wavecrest, I'm Sigmund Bauersdotter, owner and operator. Can I offer you anything?" He guides the group to a free table, motioning with his head to the serving girl. "Oh, we don't allow, er, 'dogs' inside I'm sorry," he says to Frae, nodding towards Shia.

Rhôn smiles easily as the man greets them, "Well met!" When he asks what we would like, she replies, "A full meal of whatever you have, and a good bed, for each of us, on me. I owe these folk my life...and the dog too. Could you please make an exception? He helped bring down one of those fishmen when it attacked our boat."

Paying for a decent room and good meal for each of us staying at the inn, and some meat for Shia.

Frae looks displeased at the mention of Shia being a dog, and more so that he won't is not allowed in the tavern, although he is glad to hear Rhôn speak on Shia's behalf.
"Thank you Rhôn. This is a very nice tavern, Sigmund. I am Frae and my 'dog' is named Shia. I can assure you that he won't cause any trouble, he is quite well behaved."

Frae begins to divide the sack of gold taken off the creature between everyone while he waits for Sigmund's response.

Frae gives 112 gold to everyone else, keeping 108 for himself.

Sigmund scratches his beard as Rhon outlines Shia's defence, finally nodding his head.

"Fair enough, you can bring your pet in if it's that well trained. But any mess Shia makes you clean up and if he starts barking he goes outside. If you're wanting rooms I have common rooms that sleep four at five silver per night, or private rooms for two gold each. The roast of the day with bread and cheese is five silver a plate, stew is three, ale or wine is a silver per mug. If you want a beef bone for Shia I'll check the kitchen and see what we have."

The tavern keeper looks on with an impressed gaze as Frae distributes the gold among the group, amazed at the amount of funds these travellers seem to carry.

"If you're looking for supplies there's Dax Boon up the road. His general store usually carries a bit of everything. He'll be open by eight in the morning tomorrow. For now though, let me get your orders."

The innkeeper takes the group's requests and motions the serving girl to get them from the kitchen. She returns as Phaedo is asking about trouble, and her eyes widen. With a crash she drops the mugs she was carrying and they spray across the floor.

"Kaja! Apologies friends, I'll get you replacements. My daughter seems to be unusually clumsy today."

"But father," the girl exclaims, looking with hopeful glances at the adventurers. "This group fought off an attack by the Sahuagin. Surely they're able to-"

"No, Kaja," the tavernkeeper exclaims firmly. "I'll not have you sending them to disturb the rest of the honoured dead on some imagined fantasy. Lars is gone; you need to accept that and move on." He gives an apologetic look at the group. "I'm sorry. My daughter was in love with a nobleman in town named Lars Heyton, but he passed away two days ago and was buried in the family mausoleum in the graveyard behind the church. She can't accept this and move on."

"Father, you don't understand! I've heard voices from the crypt. What if he's not really dead and he's calling for help?"

"Kaja, speak no more of this. Go fetch these good folk their drinks." Turning back to the group, the tavernkeeper sighs and shakes his head. "It's hard raising a girl on your own. I lost her mother ten years ago. She's got her mother's looks and her father's pigheaded stubbornness. Listen, if you're looking to earn yourself some good will around here speak with the major at his office in the centre of the village. His daughter was kidnapped. We've been getting attacked by some cultists from outside the city walls. They're taking folk in the night and hauling them off to gods know where. He's been offering a bounty for her return."

After exchanging a little more small-talk Sigmund leaves them to their meal, then later shows the group to their room.

"Lars is a talented Wizard. His whole family was," she says, dabbing her eyes now. "They weren't just some rich family of nobles that frittered their time away on dalliances. The Heytons were a good family, one of the first to settle here. Their skills made this town, and their magic protected it. Now Lars is the last of his line left alive. This trouble with the cultists has claimed everyone else in his family. He's strong, smart and brave. He was investigating this trouble, said he'd found a lead on wiping out the threat of the death cultists once and for all. Then all of a sudden we hear that he's dead? They didn't even have a wake, just a closed casket carried from his mansion to the graveyard."

"Well I can't accept that," she said. "Jacoby the gravekeeper threatened my father to have me brought up on charges of trespass and interfering with the dead if I came back to the graveyard snooping around. I hate that greasy worm. The way he looks at me makes my skin crawl," she said, holding her arms across her chest and shuddering. "Lars said he loved me, told me he'd protect me. My worst fear is that even though I know it's not true, even though I'm sure it's impossible he's dead, I fear perhaps I'm wrong, that he really is down in that coffin, or that his ghost now haunts the mausoleum and his soul cannot rest because of me. Please, I can't bear not knowing. It's tearing me apart inside," says Kaja in a wavering voice, before breaking down completely in tears. Still sobbing quietly, she turns and leaves the room, unable to bear the heartache of speaking about the matter any more.

Huddling close against the cold the group pick their way through the darkness towards the graveyard. The dim moonlight offers enough visibility to see about five feet in front of them, though everything is obscured in deep shadow. In the distance the hill upon which the local church sits looms menacingly in the darkness. With soft footsteps the adventurers let themselves through the rusty gate and into the graveyard adjacent to the darkened building.

Headstones and crypts fill the gently rolling earth of the graveyard. Despite the cold the ground feels soft underfoot, like some enchantment keeps the earth loose to allow easy digging for new arrivals. In the distance a crow caws hoarsely, fluttering its wings in the inky darkness.

The Heyton family crypt is unmistakable, by far the largest in the graveyard. It's also easy to see that someone has beaten them to the crypt, as a lantern light illuminates the doorway of the mausoleum, held by a gaunt looking man with long greasy black hair and a large hooked nose. He peers around in the darkness warily.

"Kaja, is that you sneaking around again? Go home girl and don't come back, or I'll teach you a lesson you won't soon forget."

'Jacoby I presume?' Nicolaj lets his voice be heard from our of the darkness and waits a moment before continuing.

His ears, revealing his Elven heritage he shows quite prominently. Every time Jacoby tries to say something Nicolaj continues speaking as if unaware that the grave keeper is probably highly suspicious at the moment.

'I'm afraid I missed the service. I assume you are making the tomb in order after the burial, to clean it once more after the viewings?' Nicolaj takes a step forward and shows his face, trying to appear as kind as possible. He unpins his holy symbol and shows it to Jacoby.
'Would you be so kind and place this token in his tomb? Lars Heyton was a dear friend. It is quite rare, although it looks ordinary so please be careful with it. I feel I can trust you, you have that sort of face you know? Of a good person, I can tell.'

'I'm afraid I missed the service. I assume you are making the tomb in order after the burial, to clean it once more after the viewings?' says Nicolaj, walking forward and revealing himself.

The trio of adventurers descend into the Heyton family crypt. Apparently whatever secrets the gravekeeper may have kept, he wasn't lying about the spiders. Thick cobwebs cover the nearby surfaces, far more than would be expected in a tomb so recently used. A narrow path appears to have been cut through the hanging sticky strands leading further into the crypt. From a faraway distance, the adventurers hear some kind of moaning noise, echoing like the sound of wind in a cave.

The steady glow of Nicolaj's holy symbol illuminates 20 feet ahead. Besides the webs, the room ahead appears to have shadowy recesses in the walls, likely for the coffins of the Heyton family. There appears to be signs of passageways leading both east and west from the room.

Reloading his crossbow as quickly as possible, Nicolaj fails to line up his shot accurately and the bolt whistles past the spider and clatters off the stone walls of the crypt.

Phaedo however swings his mace with solid skill, crunching deeply into the spider before him and causing the creature to leak foul fluids. The monstrous spider doesn't appear to be dead, but it's certainly looking worse for the damage it's sustained.

Then the spiders attack the adventurers, the two facing Rhon and Nicolaj making bite attacks, the others throwing their webs.

The halfling's second toss is far more effective than the first, hitting the spider square in the mandibles. The vial shatters, spilling corrosive acid directly into the monstrous creature's face and splattering the surrounding floor. It emits a hissing shriek, spasming in pain from the blow as the acid eats away at its eyes. Despite the gruesome injury however it appears to remain conscious and dangerous.

Note that from K3 to K8 is 25 ft. and thrown vials have a range increment of 10 ft. Each range increment incurs a -2 penalty to hit past the first, so in this situation 3 range increments would have applied -4. As a halfling you get a +1 size bonus to hit, a +1 racial bonus to thrown weapons, apply your dexterity modifier of +3 and Point Blank Shot feat for another +1. Therefore the shot would have only had a +2 bonus to hit after adding these together, not +6. Since you rolled a 16 though it still hits the target.

She feels the blade turn the spider's internal organs into ruin, and with a spray of gore she puts one boot on the creature's face to wrench her sword free. A gush of internal fluids pours from the monstrous spider's mouth, and the stench is foul, like rotted meat. Despite the mortal wound however, the spider remains barely standing, teetering on the brink unconsciousness of but still dangerous in its death throes.

Quickly glancing down the side corridors, Rhon can't see any sign of movement. The 18 seconds of combat with the spiders doesn't seem to have roused any other creatures inside the mausoleum.

Then he turned toward his newfound teammates and saw how worse for wear they actually were. Bloody, oozing wounds covered the weapon-toting pair in front of him. Half a dozen spider bites at least. The skin near the wounds, raw and inflamed, fighting off the venom deposited within by the foul mouthparts of the now-dead spiders.

In the darkness of the night a crow caws menacingly among the shadowy shapes of the tombstones.

Following the small light of Tad's lantern they hustle down the road and arrive without incident at the tavern. The door is locked at this late hour, but a minute of knocking summons Sigmund from his bed and he begrudgingly opens the door, muttering something about only vampires and sneak-thieves being about this time of night. With relief the group walks into the tavern and lets the fire still smoldering in the hearth warm their aches, then they return to their rooms.

Rhon, Phaedo and Nicolaj are surprised to discover Frae and Shia aren't in their beds where they'd left them. The room appears to be empty. Leaving the mystery to be solved another day however, the three fall into their beds and sleep a deep, dreamless sleep that belongs to the utterly exhausted.

A huge chunk is missing from the pastry … presumably being chewed by the little rogue, his cheeks filled to bursting with the sugary mess.

He enters the room. "Mmf-ngh. Ighh opp Bff-fth" He says, spilling some crumbs down the front of his shirt. To the untrained ear, it was nothing but gibberish … to anyone practiced in the art of talking while one's mouth was full it sounded suspiciously like: Morning! I've brought breakfast.

"Right then, We'll meet up after it's dark. I'll do some asking around, maybe there's more to this story than this Kaja girl you had mentioned had let on."

Tad will spend the day out and about in town performing two separate Gather Information checks.

The first of which will be in the merchant's quarter … or what passes for one anyway in Korthos. No one would have had more interface with the riches people on the island than the families who did regular business with them. His main goal will be to find out more about Lars Heyton (what type of man was he, his standing within the community, the circumstances of his death, what the townsfolk's general impression of him was, etc).

The second check will occur in and around the docks. Sailors are usually in the know regarding the seedier side of a city. Tad will ask around about the rumored Cultists on the island (seeking general info), about disappearances related to them (do they happen often, what happens to the victims, are they ever heard from again, etc).

I'm happy to role-play either or both of those conversations, but here are the rolls in any event …

(by the way … totally forgot Tad's CHA was seven! I thought it was higher for some reason when I cooked up this cockamamie scheme! Here goes nothing!)

Tad spends the morning walking around the small shops in Korthos. He discovers that the majority of the merchants eye him with suspicion, especially as he doesn't make any purchases. Not only does he fail to learn anything of interest about the Heyton family, he also is on more than one occasion asked pointedly to buy something or leave. He does however get a good sense of the available wares at the merchants, which cater to the typical needs of a small fishing village. A variety of merchandise would be useful to the common adventurer including alchemical items, but there's a poor selection of any masterwork weaponry and precious little masterwork armor barring that made of leather or the odd suit of scale mail. A few stores stock potions or scrolls but there appears to be no market for more valuable magical items.

His afternoon spent at the docks yields far better results. With the current situation in town none of the fishermen are braving the waters, so there's plenty of workmen idle at the docks and willing to spend the time gossiping like old fishwives. He spends several hours with one crew scraping barnacles off their boat, listening to them discuss the situation with the cultists. The farms outside the village walls are mostly abandoned, and those that haven't fled their properties haven't been heard from in weeks. The kidnappings in town usually happen in the early hours of the morning, first beginning a few months ago and happening infrequently, but in the last week or two they've been occurring more steadily, sometimes even two or more people in one night. They are typically people who live alone or have few connections inside town, though the mayor's daughter's abduction caused quite a big stir. So far the guards haven't been able to catch how the kidnappers are entering the town, though the wall is patrolled day and night and the waterfront is guarded as well. Various theories abound as to the fate of the kidnapped, and on the occasions when scouts from the village have spotted cultists they've reported some have familiar faces. Certainly not all of the kidnapped are accounted for, and speculation of a far more gruesome fate than forced conversion seems to be assumed. One sailor said he overheard a scout telling the wall guard they'd traced the cultists to their lair, but the sailor doesn't have any clue where it might be or how to get there. He does remember the guard's name, Ursa Jernsward. The biggest fear, however, is that the reports of the white dragon spotted in the nearby shipping lanes is allied to the cultists somehow. If that is true, the sailors feel their town is doomed, since there's no one who could possibly slay a dragon near enough to render assistance.

Tad rejoins the group sometime after dinner and fills them in on the goings-on in town and on the docks. It is told in the typical fashion of a teller of tall tales, with as much (perhaps more) emphasis on the mundane parts as the pertinent bits.

"… and that's how I learned about all about barnacles." He concludes cheerily.

Tipping his chair back, he glances at the moon. "It's time." He says, an irrepressible grin spreading across his face.

She shares Tad's grin. "Well, with luck, that poor man is still alive. If anyone has gone into the tomb today, they will have seen the dead spiders. Let us approach the graveyard quietly, with no light. Assuming you are all willing, of course. Hopefully, we won't come across any trouble, but of course we will."

Finished with their preparations for the day, the adventurers head stealthily into the night. The cold is as bitter as ever, a deep chill that freezes to the bone and threatens to snuff out all warmth found outside the embrace of a soft bed or roasting fire. But glory and treasure wait for no man, and so they proceed under cover of darkness to the graveyard to seek the answer to the fate of Lars Heyton. Their approach is unnoticed, for nobody would be foolish enough to be out in such cold weather without good reason. In the distance the walls of the village move with the torchlight of the guard, and up the hill the mansion of the Heyton family sits silent, dark and dead. Finally they arrive, dismayed to observe the door to the crypt is ajar. Someone or something is inside!

Tad shifts his weight from side to side, using the movement to keep warm. It was nights like these that made the young halfling wonder why in the world did he ever leave his burrow in the first place. Sure adventure, treasure, and glory were all fine … but smoking a nice pipe by a roaring fire seemed just as good right about now. Gods, but he hated the cold!

Tad unslings his pack and begins to ferret out his lantern. "I could sneak on ahead." He suggests. "I'm rather good at getting around unseen."

"If I run into any trouble … I'll give a yell. Otherwise, count to fifty and come in after." He says, handing the lantern over.

Tad will head into the crypt, dagger drawn. Using Move Silent and Hide, moving at half-speed down the staircase. He wants to check out the main room the party had been in before. If the coast is clear, his plan is to check the two passage ways that branch off of the main room (for lights, sounds, signs of activity, etc) … but will go no deeper than that.

Listening at the door of the crypt, Rhon thinks he might have caught the whisper of a moan from inside, but the distance and depth along with the thick stone walls means he'd have to step inside to hear it clearly.

Moving down the stairs, Tad holds his dagger ready and creeps quietly along the dirty floor. Once inside, he lights his lantern to provide illumination so he's not stumbling around in the dark.

The room that contained the spiders is largely the same as the night before. The corpses of the spiders still lay where they fell, and the musty smell beginning to come from them is enough to force Tad to keep a wide berth for fear of losing control of his stomach.

There appears to be no danger in the spider's den. Creeping slowly along the wall of the western passage first, Tad holds his lantern up and peeps around the corner.

The floor of this room is thick with droppings and debris. Several clumps of what appear to be spider egg sacs are stuck in the corners of the room. There are two dessicated corpses on the ground, humanoid by their shape, and they look like they've had all the juice sucked out of them. The walls are filled with alcoves for the coffins of the Heyton family, which appear undisturbed.

Moving silently to the opposite end of the crypt, Tad peers around the corner of the eastern corridor.

The coffins in this room have been smashed and vandalized. Pieces of wood and piles of old bones litter the ground. There's some kind of symbol painted on the eastern wall of the room.

Phaedo casts a minor spell of light on his holy symbol, while Tad is telling them what he's seen. Rhôn listens intently while the little man speaks. When he is finished, she frowns in thought, then speaks in a soft tone, "I think we should go through the room with the smashed coffins. It seems the more likely of the two, and we would do well to avoid the spider's weakening poison early in our venture."

Sheathing a weapon is a move action and moving 10 feet is a separate move action. Nicolaj requires a BAB of +1 or better in order to draw a weapon as part of a move action. Nicolaj's spear stabs the prone skeleton straight through the heart! At least it would have if the creature had any internal organs. Without these, the attack sadly fails to deal the creature any harm.

Phaedo's swing with his mace strikes the shield of the skeleton attacking him, deflecting the blow before it can do any harm.

They seem to be drawn in dark brown liquid that has dried and congealed into lumps in places. It appears to be a stylized skull now that you can take a moment to consider it, and beneath it there's some sort of curved moon shape. It's not a symbol you personally recognize as being part of any arcane ritual or spell, though perhaps it's religious in nature. He keeps quiet as Nicolaj studies the symbols on the wall and follows Rhon's action and lifts one of the shields the animated dead was wielding. A puzzled look comes over his face as tries to slip his wrist, then forearm , and then shoulder into the strap of the shield. He shakes his head to himself as crouches completely behind the shield.

He pops his head over the edge of the shield with Rhons words, "Wait...what is going on here?" One eyebrow arched sharply and his head turned just slightly. His eyes dart from one party member to the other with a serious look of puzzle on his face.

Casting around for something to use to open the nailed coffin, you think that it's possible you might be able to slide your sword's tip under the wood and use to lever up the lid. Of course, given that this weapon wasn't designed to be used in this manner it's also possible you might damage it in the process. You could also simply try to pull the wood away using your own strength alone. Or you could just smash the coffin apart like the vandals had done in the previous room.

Roll a DC 18 Strength check as a full round action if trying to open the coffin without destroying it. Using your sword for leverage applies a +2 circumstance bonus to this check, but as it's not designed for this task a roll that fails the DC by 5 or more will warp the metal, resulting in a -1 penalty to attack rolls with the sword until repaired with 8 hours of work and a DC 10 Weaponsmithing check or a spell to repair the damage such as Make Whole or Fabricate. Smashing the coffin follows standard rules for damaging objects, the coffin lid is 1 inch thick and has hardness 5 and 10 hit points.
