Argos is one of the twin Jewels of southern Krypton. A few miles east of Metros, near the border of the Central Plains, Argos is the current seat of House El. The great House once held Metros as well, but in recent decades it was taken from them by political maneuvering on the part of Luth-Or. Each of you has made your way here in response to rumors that the patriarch of House El is putting together an expedition to the northern wastes. His offer of gold was enough to draw some, others are in it for favors. Still more are in it for doing the right thing

Barda, Abiin Sur, Rakta, and Tim are met at the gates of Jor-El's manor by a woman in armor. She's tall and seemingly of noble bearing, and has a sword at her hip, and a shield blazoned with the symbol of Kal-El hanging on her back. Her long dark hair is in a braid, and falls over one shoulder.

"You've all been expected. My name is Tana Lor-An, I've been instructed to bring you before my Lord."

She leads you inside, taking you across the grounds to the door. The lawn is well trimmed and smells fresh, and flowering dogwood trees line the path up to the facade of the manor. The door is dark hardwood, inlaid with the crest of House El, which unsurprisingly bears much similarity to Kal-El's holy symbol. Tana leads you down a hallway and to the Lord's study, where Jor-El himself is waiting for you. He wears a simple gray robe, and stands next to a young man.

Jor-El appears to be in middle age, with wrinkles at his eyes, and gray in his beard. His head is shaved, and he smiles as he sees you walk in.

"Good, I'm glad you all were able to make it. Thank you, Tana."

The young woman nods and stands by the door.

"I thank you all for answering my request. Each of you brings something unique to the table, and will be rewarded not only with gold, but with part of my own private stash..."

As he trails off, he removes a cloth from his desk, exposing a small pile of bright green jewels. Kryptonite. A rare and valuable gemstone worth far more than most people can afford.

"I'm sure you have many questions, even you, Kon-El."

He looks to the young man at his side.

"I'll take the time to answer them now, while I still can. And know that I'm sending my vassal, Kon-El along with you, as my emissary."

Tim raises a hand. "Yeah, what exactly are we gonna be doin' out in the wastes?"

Jor-El nods, as if he was anticipating that question.

"I'm glad you asked. The wastes are of little consequence, what matters to me, and to all of Krypton, is the Fortress. It was once a mighty temple of Kal-El, but since the fall of the Martian Empire, it hasn't been safe for pilgrims to cross the Red Desert. The Fortress of Solitude has stood empty for centuries. None know what lies inside it now. Traps. Monsters. It could be crawling with Orcs. I'm sending you all to reclaim it. Others will secure a road through the desert, but the Fortress itself must be made safe first. Once you do so and return, you'll receive your pay."

Kon holds his place at Jor-El's side, a smile crossing his face as he sees Barda among the adventurers. Without lifting his hands from his side he gives her a little one handed wave. Mouths a message silently.
"Good to see you again."
He snaps back to focus as Jor-El unveils the gemstones and his jaw drops just a little before his decorum takes hold.
"I serve at your pleasure, sir. You have given me gifts beyond measure. I have my name thanks to you, and no need of gems."

"You're too modest, Kon-El. You're undertaking a dangerous journey, and deserve the same rewards. And..."

He pauses and smiles sadly.

"I'm proud of you, boy."

Kon smiles warmly at his adopted father.
"Then if I may indulge my pride in my name, sir, reinvest my share into the resulting route. If it brings honor to our house it will serve me better then personal wealth."

The young man looks around at the finery within the room, especially the kryptonite on the desk with a gaze of absolute desire. This was more wealth than he had ever seen, with it he could raise an army and raze Thanagar to the ground.

"Might be a bit overkill there my friend," he thinks to himself amidst his daydream of burning Hawks screaming to their impotent gods,"but enough thinking about genocide, the rich guy is speaking." Thus he pays attention to the others and what they are saying, particularly the young Krypton and his master.

After the Krypton, Kon-el asks for his share to be used in the name of his house, Rakta sighs, another soul too kind for this world. However the young Raven finally speaks up,"So can we expect other groups to be interested in this fortress? Or are we the only ones looking for it?"

Abiin Sur steeples his fingers, pondering over the nature of the quest. Was it dangerous? Of course. Was it the right thing to do? Maybe. Jor-El seemed to have noble motives, but there was always a chance that he had something he was hiding. Nonetheless, despite his previous experience, Abiin Sur likes to believe the best in people. "A noble cause indeed. Though the journey is long and perilous. While we remain in Krypton, we should be relatively safe, but what if we come across the Legion of Doom while we cross the Red Desert? Would it not be wise to have a larger group? Or is stealth more important?"

Jor-El puts his hand on Kon-El's shoulder, squeezing it for a brief moment before letting his hand fall back to his side.

"Consider it done."

At Rakta's question, Jor-El sighs.

"I would have liked to believe that the Clerics of Kal-El would be interested in the Fortress, but they all seem to think it's too dangerous to reclaim. Which brings me to your Question, Abiin. I cannot know for certain what dangers you will face, but there is someone who can. I would advise you to seek out the Oracle. She dwells in a shrine near the border with Gotham, on the western side of the Arkham Hills. Her advice could prove crucial to your quest."

Barda gives a smile to her friend. Small even for one of her kind, she carries herself with power.

"Likewise" she mouths back.

Her attention returns to their host.

Jor-El nods towards Tana, who brings over a map.

"The Oracle's shrine is about a hundred miles north of here. It could take you several days to arrive. From there, she can hopefully give you guidance on how to best proceed. The route follows the road, so you should be safe. You may encounter a Raven Clan camp a few dozen miles outside of Argos, though given present company, you ought to be able to pass."

With that, he rolls up the map and hands it to Kon-El.

"I wish you luck. Tana can escort you to the edge of the city, should you desire her to. She can go no further, I'm afraid. I must also ask that you keep the nature of your quest secret. Many would try to dissuade you, in the lands you're about to cross. Farewell."

He bows his head and allows you all to leave. Tana leads you back out of the manor and to the gates.

"Do you all have the supplies you need? We can stop in the city to replenish your stores, my Lord has given me a small stipend with which to purchase goods for your journey."

"We'll need to pick up the necessities, like food and water. Otherwise, I'm content with the gear that I have." He looks to the others, adjusting the strap on his pack. "Though I would be more than happy to acquire more. I would rather have more than we need than not have enough."

As he steps away from Jor-El's side, Kon-El pauses. Though words would do a poor job conveying his thoughts he takes a moment to get a good look at his adopted father. His eyes convey thanks and love enough. He is somber as he exits the chamber.

His dark mood though evaporates as he remembers his new company. Darting forward he pulls Barda up into his arms and spins her around in a hug, his laughter echoing off the walls.
"It does my heart well to see you, Friend! Am I mistaken or have you put on yet more muscle? Perhaps it's merely bulkier armor. We will have to see on the road. Do you still find time to cook?"
Dropping his friend somewhat carelessly Kon's bright eyes dart between the rest of the party. There is a moments pause as he taps into his magic, a brief and nearly imperceptible flare of laight from the symbol of Kal-El that rests beneath his jacket upon his breast. Making swift use of a fox like cunning he puts name and titles to faces.
"Abin Sur! I am honored to be in your presence, good sir. I have heard great things of your gifts. To uncover such treachery so soon into your training and still have the strength of character to bring it into the light. I know that with your help our venture cannot help but meet with success."
He stops short as the trappings of Rakta's office meet his eyes, but his smile does not falter, nor does his good cheer.
"And you sir, of the Raven Clan I take it? There magics are nearly without parallel. Now I know we have no fear of those that walk beyond death. Though you may not follow the same god as I we both serve the light. I know my father trusts you in this. And as such, we are nearly brothers of a sort. It is good to meet you. I'm sure we'll have much to talk about and debate in good faith."
Tim... Makes him stop completely. Barda may recognize a slightly quirk that reaches Kon's smile as he looks over Tim, lingering on the actor's body.
"Now you, sir, I know not what to make of. I would have thought my father sent me along to function as the face of our endeavor, but your looks are far too fine to go to waste. You are I hope in some way withing the public eye? T'would be a shame to waste your blessings."

Barda smiles. It was very good to see her friend again. It was always nice to see his genuinely charming spirits and personality. "It is good to see you again as well Kon, and I have still been working out. The side effect is a hearty appetite. So yes I do keep up with my cooking." When she gets set back down she adjusts her armor back. This trip wasn't going to be bad.

Tim smiles warmly, though he manages to be a bit more subtle with his gaze. "I'm glad you think so. Tim Drake. Part-time actor and full-time revolutionary. Before the flirting begins, Abiin Sur smiles and thanks Kon-El kindly. "I only did what was right. I only wish I had acted sooner. But I am confident that we can do great things together, all of us."

He walks mostly in silence while Kon-El and Tim are talking, and decides to engage Rakta in conversation. "I'll admit, I'm not terribly familiar with the worship of Trigon. In Korguar, we mostly revere Rao and Hera. What, besides him being the patron of your race, draws you to him?"

ChaosArchon
2014-12-11, 01:47 AM
Upon Abiin's questioning, Rakta thinks for a moment,"He saved my life, or at least marked me as one of his heralds which stopped some of his priests from killing me. So despite all he might stand for, I do owe him at least my life. To be honest before then I hadn't given his teachings much heed, just another aspect of my people which had only brought me more heartbreak than joy. I still don't know why he interceded on my behalf, perhaps I have some larger role yet but I know not."

"Ah, I see. Gratitude can be a large factor when it comes to choosing a god to worship. I, for one, am glad that he spared you. Perhaps this quest is part of your greater destiny. It would be an honor to have you with us, Cleric of the Light." He pauses, his voice dropping to barely above a whisper. "But do take care. I may be open when it comes to the identity of your god, but I do know what Trigon is capable of, and the depths to which he and his followers will sink. Harm an innocent, and I will end you. I have a duty that takes precedent over Jor-El's errand."

Rakta grins and continues the facade of having a civil conversation with the Green Lantern,"Oh this trip is going to be absolutely divine." The tiefling too then lowers voice and any trace of a smile vanishes,"While my god might be the very prosopopoeia of evil, I am not. But I will tell you something I've found in my life, it is that those who claim to do good and fight in the name of all that is sunshine and rainbows; they often leave quite the trail of bodies behind their glorious marches. So I know to what depths the followers of "good" can sink to, and what they can become, such as your master." and smiles for a moment and then continues,"and if I'm harming someone, you can be assured they are not innocent in the slightest. The Lord of Light sees all, and he knows their sins."

As Tana leads you all towards the northern border of the city, the group comes across what may be its first chance to prove itself. A group of young men have cornered a young woman in an alley. She's slender and vulnerable looking, a beautiful slip of a girl with short red hair and brilliant green eyes. Her attackers are tall and muscular, athletic looking and strong. Each of them shouts something along the lines of:

"Get out of here, freak!"

At the sight of Barda, Tim, and Rakta going for their weapons, the youths give pause. However, they seem to find Rakta's proclamation more comical and melodramatic than intended. The man standing in front, who seems to be their leader, sneers and turns back to the woman.

The others fall into hushed whispers as Kon-El speaks.

"That's Jor-El's son."

"We might be in trouble."

"Oh balls."

Their leader stops in his tracks, and turns back to look at you all.

"Kon-El, you don't know what this unholy creature really is. She's a shapeshifter. A demon."

His expression flips to a grin when the name pulls at his brain just so. Funny thing about being an actor. You pick up a lot of loose knowledge along the way. "A martian name would of course not be so out of place Tim. I don't know if it is as prevalent in your home nation but Krypton accepted numerous refugees from the Red Desert when Darksied attacked. As I understand it not all were so willing to help the dispossessed. Prejudices abound, I suppose."

Tim grins. He was from Gotham City. This wouldn't be the first time he'd stolen from aspiring thieves, and it probably wouldn't be the last. Bah. Kon. Sweet, sexy Kon. Didn't understand the pleasure he derived from his work. But before the others can act, Rakta heads towards their quarry without a word. Odd fellow. Bit of a temper. This could get ugly. Tim idly sweeps off his coat and vest. Though they looked stunning on him, scarlet and stealth made poor bedfellows. Fortunately, the robbers were focused on the interloper in their midst, which made his job a fair bit easier. He winds his way around the encampment, seeking shelter from prying eyes wherever it can be found. Tim bounces from cart to tent and back again. Only move when people were preoccupied. Always on their periphery. Eventually, Tim finds a hiding spot close to the discreet conversation and ***** an ear...

Yet he doesn't need to. One of the thieflings (heh) is practically shouting. Either their leader was an extremely good actor or, more likely, Rakta had accused the wrong man.

"Rakta, wait!" The Elf tried to call to his companion, but it seems as though he was too late. Abiin sighs, hanging his head and covering his face with one hand. If only the fool had waited for him to mention which group it was who had intended to rob them, rather than simply going to the nearest group. Surely the actual thieves would escape while the Cleric made a scene, but Abiin knew that placating the offended party was now more important. Otherwise, it could escalate into violence.

He walks over to the group and starts to pull Rakta aside, frowning heavily and looking to the Tiefling who spoke. "Please sir, pardon his foolishness. There has simply been a misunderstanding. We'll be on our way, and won't bother you again."

The Tiefling camp fades into the distance as you keep walking. Hours go by without incident, though night starts falling soon. "Amusing. Rakta... I want you to understand that I do sympathize. I imagine it is difficult to belong to a people as... Scattered, as the Raven clan. Any opportunity to draw your people close, to unite, must seem a god send, regardless of the god you feel favors you."
He pauses for a moment trying to decide how best to make his point.
"But I do not trust our new acquaintances. And would venture it that Jor-El, who funds our expedition, and put it together would not as well. So to be blunt, watch your tongue more carefully. Other members of our venture have taken a care to guard our goal. You state it plainly to men who not twenty minutes hence planned to slit our throats in order to stop us on house Or's behalf."

I'm having her cast Eldritch Blast, and using the Agonizing Blast invocation. On a hit, she deals 1d10 force damage plus her CHA modifier.

Rakta snarls at his attacker but grins as it is destroyed. As the last two scarecrows still continue to fight, Rakta raises the symbol of Trigon high above his head as it becomes brighter and brighter until the entire area is as bright as a warm summer's day. As the light spreads across the area, the two scarecrows are assailed by the light itself and crumble over in pain.

The Scarecrows scream and shield their sunken eyes as the light burns them.

Forehead dripping with sweat Kon reaches for the last of his reserves of mystical power, expending the enrgy he normally holds in trust. A final series of bolts fly from his eyes.

The last two Scarecrows crumble to ash, and the conscious prisoners let out a cheer. They're tied to a series of posts hammered into the ground. They seem to follow no pattern, just a collection of men, women, and children. Zinthos's corpse lies next to the group of posts, at the feet of a man with fresh bruises on his face.

Rac Shade had been having a rough day. First he was accosted by a group of Raven Clan Tieflings outside the village, during his travels, and then was dragged into a desperate struggle with the Scarecrows, Fey constructs produced in the darkest of Dream's nightmares. It seemed that things couldn't get worse, as the Scarecrows recognized him for what he was. Two of the Tieflings fled into the woods, and the one who stayed to fight was killed. Rac himself had his Vest stolen, which stripped him of much of his magic. He managed to take out a few before he was overwhelmed.

And then, a group of adventures came, and the six of them killed the Scarecrows. Seems like things were turning out okay after all.

One of the prisoners looks to the group, a young girl of maybe 10 years old.

"I knew it! I knew my daddy would send help!"

As the last of the scarecrows crumbles to dust, Rakta rushes over to Zintho's corpse and closes the still open eyes of the fallen tiefling,"Now you rest my friend, I pray you find enlightenment and pleasure in Trigon's eternal company. May every moment of your existence be spent by His side, and let the night never come lest it end His Radiance. One day you shall return again, among the rest of our fallen at his side, and watch as He judges the living and His rule shall last forever. Sanctus et eius noimne."

After he performs the last rites, he begins to dig a hole for the corpse.

Retrieving his dagger, Tim sets about cutting the prisoners loose. He smiles down at the little girl. "He sure did, kid."

The prisoners are cut free, some of the older ones carrying the children. The little girl squeals in delight and gives Tim a big hug.

"You were so brave!"

The others go about giving lots of thanks to the whole group. Another woman comes over to the little girl.

"Merrin Zon-Em! Your father must be worried sick. Let's get you home."

Merrin whines and stomps her foot.

"We're going home soon! I gotta thank these nice people, auntie!"

Her aunt rolls her eyes, but lets her talk.

"You're tall. How come your ears are pointy? Where'd you get that sword?"

Without pausing for answers, she goes to Rakta.

"How come you have antlers? And a tail! Was that man your friend? I'm sorry he died..."

She goes to Kon-El next.

"I saw you shoot fire out of your eyes! That was so cool! Can you teach me?"

Then to Abiin.

"Hey! You're a Green Lantern! And a Elf! I've never met an Elf before, how come you're bald?"

She stands in the middle of the group again, apparently now awaiting her answers.

Tim laughs a little. "Yes, I suppose I am." He tracks the hyperactive child with his eyes, a somewhat difficult task. "My ears are pointy because I'm a half-elf. Half elf, half human. And, the sword..." His smile slips a little. "The sword was a gift from a friend."

Strings of unkempt red hair fall across the bruised face of Rac Shade. His thin wrists are rubbed raw from the ropes and the gag has a smell and taste that brings worse things to mind as he tries to avoid imagining what else it's been used for. Was he supposed to do something about the scarecrows? He hopes not. There's the vest too, bad things could happen with it. He thinks about the forks and the roads are slick and overrun with roses.

You can never tell where your path will lead until you walk it, or maybe that's just him. The six strangers who banish the wicker nightmares loom large in his mind. The song strikes a cord only he can hear. He knows that refrain. The man with the red breast, omen or truth, he can see the blood dripping from his heart, cuts him free.

"'Ank you" he slurs through his swollen jaw as he tries to haul himself painfully to his feet. "'Ey 'est. Dey took 'ey 'est. 'S dang'rous. Gotta fin' 'et".

Tim snaps from his thoughts and approaches the injured man, brow furrowed. "I'm sorry? They took your what?" Something dangerous, but what on Earth could he being going for with 'est?

For maximum simplicity, Tim is in fact wearing a vest.
