View Full Version : [13th Age] A story of scarlet

It was supposed to be a day of glorious retribution. The rise of a hellhole only five days' march away from the Imperial Capital of Axis was an insult and a danger that could not be ignored. An entire legion led under High Prince Kelas himself, with arcane support and even a dragon knight cadre surrounded the once proud Castle Windgate, now overrun with spawn of the Abyss. More than one mercenary company offered its services...

Which is the reason you appeared on the scene. As members of the Scarlet Stripes Company, 1st platoon, fourth squad, you have fought against savage barbarians and brutish orcs, the feared cavalry of the southern kingdom of Salandar and even participated in the quelling of Baron Foren's uprising. After two weeks of besiegement, the walls were finally breached, only to realise that the castle's courtyard did not conform to the rules world you knew, being absurdly larger than it had any right to. You were there, among the first to break through against foul monstrosities, hateful wrestches, crazed cultists and abominations. Victory was close at hand...

Until the flame pillars and lightnings struck, reaping lives like wheat before a scythe. Some struck too near. You lost your conciousness. Hours later, when you opened your eyes again, you saw a ravaged battlefield filled with corpses, both mortal and demonic. Windgate is a ruin, the sky has a strange reddish colour and huges flames burn in the distance. It seems that you were left behind. It looks as if your platoon, among many others, was wiped out. And what's worse...you remember that the flames and lightnings came from behindyour forces.

So...what now, Scarlet Stripes?

The first things you feel when you regain consciousness are the foul smell in the air and horrible screeching sounds from above. Your ears are still ringing from the powers unleashed upon the battlefield. A copper-red fog has descended on the blood-soaked ground. Searching around, the corpses of mortal troopers and demonic warriors in every direction, you finally the rest of the surviving members of your squad. No one is attacking yet-that's good. No ally around though-that's not. In the distance you see large blueish pyres.

The main building of Castle Windgate, shaped like a grinning skull by the occupying forces, remains forbidding but at least the hellish flames seem to be gone. At the other side of the courtyard three wire-thin cloaked figures are searching the dead. No carrion had descended upon the corpses yet. Not a banner remains standing orunbroken, including yours. An eery silence has replaced the cacophony of the battle, broken only by those screeches.

Your move, Scarlet Stripes.

Rising, head aching and eyes burned by what little light the fog allows into the courtyard, Bazu picks through the corpses around him, both hoping and fearing to find a familiar face.

Was that... Indeed, he drew his wand out of a demon's throat. Apparently, the fighting at the end had been desperate enough that he had pressed the fang into service as a dagger. Could anyone have survived in the tumult of flame and lightning unleashed by... who had that caster been? He thought he had accounted for the mages who could work truly apocolyptic magical, but the style was new...

Searching for other members of the fourth squad, anyone else alive at all, Bazu finally risked calling out. "Scarlet Stripes! Anyone else still living?!"

A small form rises out of a pile of dead and runs up Bazu's back before whispering in his ear. "It's Knobby, ferret form. Shifted to hide." The gnomish scout didn't really need to whisper in beast form, but it was a heavily ingrained habit.

It was a bleak landscape but Knobby had seen worse. The sheer volume of death was impressive though.

Bogart wakes up with a dull throbbing in his head. As his eyes adjust to the horrors, he shudders.

"What was that?", he thinks to himself, before shakily standing to his feet.

Bogart rises, gloriously, his armor glinting and shining. Following the sound of Bazu's voice, he strides up to the elf. "As if this could kill me! I've fought through far worse plenty of times!" Bogart's sword appears to be drawn, as he surveys the scene.

Pointing to the cloaked figures, he says "Those aren't ours, are they? I think we should prepare for trouble."

"If they only seek to disturb the dead, we have nothing to fear." Bazu opens his ritual pack, allowing Knobby a place to ride in better cover, should the shifter desire it.
"If they clean up from the assault before, though... Bazu's wand falls into slender fingers, the dragon's fang still crusted by demon's black blood. "A suggested formation?"

"Fall in behind me," Captain Jhafaer orders, coming around the corpse of a demonic hellbeast the size of an ox. Her normally immaculate armor is singed and bloodied, and her shield has been dented by repeated blows. "Scout Whispercough, move to a flanking position. I don't like the look of that sky, I don't like the look of those ragpickers, and I don't like how alone we seem to be. Stay on guard."

She marches toward the thin men, sword and shield in hand. Her stance is wary but not hostile.

Nodding to the captain - it still felt odd paying deference to one of the dark elves, but that was practically the least of the hardships he'd suffered since his conscription. "As you say. Do we have a plan?"

Just in case or combat, he let his emotions still, muttering over and over the words in draconic that would allow him to summon up his power at need. "Beshtath, Gorenal, Mrathrox"

Rokku

A pile of gore shifted and a thickly muscled figure rose from it, yawning.

"Well," said Steel Jaguar, wiping blood and guts from his beard, "that was proper ****ed. So who else... oh, there you all are."

Still dripping, he ran after the group.

"So we're picking a fight with these fellas then?"

You walk to the trio, who seem absorbed over the corspe of a large ape-like fiend(probably a barlgura, the more versed in demonic lore of you think).

"Removing the eyes of this one without rendering it useless for ritualistic purposes is a delicate procedure. Please watch carefully...oh, I do believe we have company" says the tallest of the trio and turns around. It turns out that the speaker is a tall, lean woman with blue-gree hair and eyes, her skin bearing fine scales.

"Survivors, I see. That's good...we're here for educational purposes. I am arcanist lecturer Lev' vera. My high elven student is Oneran Thord(the wiry man bows) and the Tielfing is Boranal (crimson eyes watch you appraisingly) "

All three look wary, their hands not too far away from the wands in their belts.

Bogart takes a good look at their cloaks. Teacher and students they might be, but Lev'vera has concealed part of their identity. The elaborate runes around the hem identify the lecturer as a member of the Multigate Providers, a trading company dealing with arcane substances and material components across the planes with questionable legal status. Not exactly disreputable, but quite shady. Rumours claim that they have made extensive dealings with the prince of Shadows in the past. They can be good informants but always demand their price in full.

Loki_42

Bogart eyes the three, particularly Lev'vera.

"What educational purpose could you be getting from wandering around a warzone? Even if there doesn't seem to many things around left alive to do t he fighting."

Bogart sees the corpse they're over, and realization comes to him. He stares deeply at the group and then shakes his head.

"Wait a minute, this doesn't make sense. I killed a lot of demons, yeah, but not this many. How long have you three been here, did you see anyone else in the area?"

Jhafaer grunts and sheathes her sword. "If you're here for the demon corpses, we've no quarrel with you," she says pointedly, making it clear to the mages that there will indeed be a quarrel if they start collecting bits of the fallen Imperial soldiers. "And so I take it you've found no other survivors as you've been going about your 'educational purposes'?"

"Necromancers," the word emerges on a soft breath like a sneer. "Or is there some other reason they'd be bothering the dead? Terribly cruel, it is." The wood elf colors quickly, an angry flush painting his bare-shaven cheeks and he, as well, has his wand ready to bring to bear in an instant. Stalking over to stand next to the Braggart, the mage keeps one glaring eye on the Lecturer. "I think we'd be better off if these three were wiped out... Their sort of magic does not need to thrive in this world."

From my time as a Back-Up Ritualist, do I recognize what sort of use they might make of an eyeless, but otherwise intact, body? [roll0]

Teucros
2014-12-12, 04:41 AM
The genasi scowls. "My students are generalists, at least for now. But yes, I am a necromancer. I study the dead, call upon spirits, cast divinations, draw upon the forces of life and death and occasionally use them against my foes. I fail to see how my are arts are more cruel than incineration or electrocution. And no, I am not here for the corpses of your comrades."She sighs and mutters "Bloody close-minded Materials..."

In most cases, the answer would be an eyeless undead of soem sort. A really talented necromancer might be able to replace them with something really dangerous, like Bodak or Medusa eyes, but other than the Lich King and his favourites, these grafts are almsot unheard of. Definitely for the best.

Afterwards, the lecturer turns towards Jhafaer. "The fiends are enough for us. For example, these eyes, as I was explaining to my students, would be very useful to scriers and diviners. Demonic eyes in good condition post mortem are rarer than one might expect."

And fetch a good price, adds Bogart mentally.

"You're the first living ones we've seen or heard outside Windgate during the one hour we've been here, other than whatever monstrosity flies high above. We haven't managed to get inside Windgate proper. And that's all I'm willing to say. "

It is clear they want something from the inside. Perhaps a deal could be made for additional information. Otherwise, they seem pretty legit.

Brodencrantz
2014-12-12, 03:59 PM
"Our arts may both kill or maim our foes, but I have no need to twist and break souls to summon my power. Wracking the body is of momentary consequence. Damage to the soul..." Bazu shudders, then turns to the captain, voice dropping to a whisper "If what they say is true, perhaps we should make best time to windgate?"

Jhafaer gives the genasi a level look as Bazu speaks. "Damage to the soul ... is not currently our concern," she says. "Windgate is our target, but what concerns me is that our circumstances have very definitely changed. Unfortunately, we're missing a lot of information, such as what this thing circling above us might be, or what those magics were, or where the rest of our forces are."

She looks around at the corpses littering the battlefield. "I must admit, being this uninformed is making me rather edgy. I feel this strange need to hack up demon corpses ... especially their eyes. Oh, yes ... all those intact demon eyes are positively maddening." She smiles thinly at Le'vara and begins walking over to a demon corpse, drawing her sword. "If only I better understood my situation, I'm sure I would be able to control myself. And it would be such a shame if something happened to all these precious demon parts."

"You wouldn't..." says the lecturer, then thinks better of it, "Silver Folk. Of course you would. So be it...After the enfilade of flame and thunder, your High Prince ordered a retreat. The demons charged forward, smelling blood or perhaps fearing another aerial assault. Your soldiers fought well and in good order, but it was still a close call until reinforceents came, bearing the gauntlet emblem. Those demons who did not die then and there hid in Windgate proper or among the ruins. The flames you see were raised by you Imperials, cutting the area off. Satisfied?"

She looks to the other soldiers. "Banners with a fist sound like Crusade forces to me. We're cut off from everyone at the moment, but that wall of fire will come down eventually. And if this keep is still occupied by demons when the Crusade comes in, they will almost certainly claim it as the spoils of war. If it is instead occupied by Imperial forces, then the Crusade will have to leave empty-handed. Therefore, it is our duty to clear the remaining demons out of the keep and reclaim Windgate for the Emperor with all good haste. The battle is in our hands, gentlemen."

She nods to Steel Jaguar. "Any questions, or shall we follow the sergeant's advice and get to murdering?"

"Purge or cleanse would be a far nicer term than murder, captain. It does seem that's our only option." turning back to the lecturer, blue eyes flaring, Bazu speaks through a gritted smile, "So you're not with our forces... You're not with the crusader, or else you'd still be waiting outside that ring of fire. That means you either were attached to the diabolist's forces or came from Windgate itself. Which is it?"

"I'd still like to know what our new friends here want from Windgate. Be honest, that's why you're really here, isn't it. These demon parts are just icing on the cake, how could you have even known they'd be here when you came out." Bogart points towards Windgate. "So either you want something from in there, or you had something to do with this carnage. And I'm willing to cut you some slack."

Turning to face the rest of the Stripes, Bogart begins to speak. "It does sound like the Crusader could be here. Hopefully they won't cause us trouble, seeing as how we're both in the business of killing demons. Although, if they do pick a fight, I bet we can handle them." He turns to Knobby. "Do you think maybe you should scout them out for us? You did a pretty good job heading off that Crusader group on the road, earlier. I wonder if they're connected...?"

Jhafaer's eyebrows knit together. "Cleanse? Purge? I thought 'murder' meant something like 'to kill while experiencing a sense of enjoyment.' Isn't that correct? Hrmmm ... human language is so imprecise when it comes to death. The Silver Folk would call this sekreth: to kill unnatural things out of necessity, but nevertheless with a sense of quiet satisfaction."

She watches Lev'vara's reaction to her fellow soldiers, hand resting lightly on the hilt of her sword in case the corpsepickers take exception.

His eyes glaze over as though practicing arithmetic tables in his head and when he finally snaps out of it, a grin splits his tanned face. "Or, we could use the explosion as the breath and strike as the tail. She chuckles. "I like the idea of taking the high ground, strange as that might be coming from one of the Silver Folk. We generally prefer death from below, but in this case, I think death from above will have to do. Sergeant, can you take a rope up with you and lower it down to the rest of us?"

Steel Jaguar finds the wall more treacherous than initially expected, but in the end he manages to reach the upper floor and aid the rest of you to climb up.

You find yourselves in a large room with a lagre table in the middle and walls mostly covered by bookcases and maps. The floor looks and feels strange under your feet-a soft dark grey substance seems to have replaced most of the stone on the floor and the walls up to thigh level. The door is wide open. With a quick glance you notice five other rooms on your level, the stairs leading to the level above, the stairs leading to ground level, the four armored figures and two fidgeting crimson fleshed demons standing guard near the main gate and the big hole in the ground at the other sidel.

Iron Jaguar and Knobby search the rooms on your level.

The first one has been vandalised beyond all recognition. What hasn't been covered by the strange substance is now splinters or rags.

The second one, originally a bedroom, was used as feasting ground-there are crunched bones everywhere, although the demons made sure to devour all flesh.

In the third room you see the corpse of an armored woman pierced on the wall with spears and halberds. Her blade lies on the floor, soaked in black blood. Her insignia identify her as the castellan's personal bodyguard. The demons eleced not to feast upon her, but made special effort to desecrate, befoul or vandalise any symbols, idols, keepsakes or other item that might have been of value to the woman.

The fourth room was presumably a bedroom for guests, its luxurious furniture and fabrics now utterly destroyed.

The fifth room was the castellan's office. The man had an eye for art...and so did at least one fiend, mocking and befouling everything it could see. As for the castellan himself, he stands at the far wall, held by some sort of coccoon around the upper part of his body. He has been brutally used and savaged-indeed, the emaciated horned figure around him is still cutting small pieces from the bloated flesh that once was the castellan's left hip.

Knobby identifies it as a babau demon, not grown to its full stature. It never saw Iron Jaguar's attack coming. Three seconds later it drops on the floor with a broken neck.

This level is secured. You have a full surprise round against the demons whenever you choose to attack.

It felt good to be working with professionals. When Iron Jaguar casually reported the brutal work of the demons, the wizard could not help but to think on the units he'd served with in the past that would have simply fallen apart on seeing the sights the Scarlet Stripes took in stride. I'm still not happy to be stuck serving here, but at least this lot won't get me killed.

Well, so much for a proper surprise attack. Direct to destruction, instead. Calling to forth the words of power, the hissing syllables that allowed magic to flow straight through his veins, Bazu leveled his wand at the unengaged demon. "By the blistering winter of the great White, I call death down upon you, foul flamespawn!" And then, in almost a completely different voice, his throat coughs up words that almost seem to pain him as he speaks. "Vashlaroon sesmyth" A sound like a frozen lake cracking rings out through the hall and Bazu is enveloped in cold fog while a stream of pure cold lashes out to strike at the demon.

Your group now descends below Windgate proper. Every surface from this point on is covered by the soft, dark grey substance while distant inhuman cries and shrieks echo across the tunnel. The hole eventually leads to a large cavern lit by green pyres. There are groups of pods hanging from the walls on your left and right which spawn small wretched creatures.

These foul slimy hunchbacked dretches push, bite and fight their own in order to avoid finding theselves in the middle of the room where a massive apish figure devours those unlucky to get in its reach. A few try to escape to the exit opposite to your direction but a pair of cackling imps zap them back. The orange-furred brute has been heavily wounded. Its flesh has been slashed and pierced, seared and blasted. You can't fail to notive that with every dretch eaten, a tiny part of its wounds is healed. Bogart stares at the scene, a questioning look overtaking his initial disgust."What could have dealt those wounds to the big one? It's a shame these demons can't tell us what happened here, I feel like we're still missing a lot of the story."

As his allies plan to launch there attack, he interjects "You said these things were weak of will? The big one is wounded, perhaps if I could get closer to him, I could confuse him and get him to kill the smaller ones off for us. He already seems to want to, I would just need to push him to be a bit more... active"

Jhafaer considers Knobby's suggestion, then nods. "The imps would seem to be the strategically the best point of attack. If they're removed, that allows the dretches to scatter, which would then deny resources to the large demon." She grimaces. "Later on, cleaning up the little pests will be a headache, but I don't think we can worry about that at the moment. Try to kill the imps, then the barglura, then the pods. Specialist, if you have magics that would incapacitate the barglura, spend them at your discretion. Otherwise I'll try to keep it occupied."

Jhafaer pauses and looks on with amusement as the demons offer to negotiate. "You're trying to bargain? Now? Really?" She shakes her head and chuckles. "First of all, you and your kind are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of our fellow soldiers, so we're not particularly inclined to resolve this peacefully. Second, the only thing that we want and that you can offer is the castle ..."

She pauses, and smiles sweetly at the black imp. "... but unfortunately for you, we've no need to bargain for that, since we can simply take it." Still grinning from ear to ear, she punctuates her reply by disemboweling a nearby dretch. "Troops, wipe them out. Trying to negotiate with a dark elf from a position of weakness. Pfah. I'm almost offended."

OOC
There's no way that Jhafaer is going to negotiate with demons, in part because of Imperial honor, but mostly because she's a dark elf and smells blood. Pressing the attack.
