Specifically, I was considering multiclassing within Fighter.

Not by RAW, but it should be easy enough to do if you wanted. There's been a few threads with suggestions already.

Ah, thank you. I'll look for them.

Even if you could do it, it would be highly inadvisable. Fighter Archetypes only give features on levels 3,7,10,15 and 18. If you were a Fighter/Fighter multi, then those other levels would essentially be dead levels that offer nothing - wasting two levels just for the minor ability of a third level is a horrible idea and if allowed, would be pretty much one of the only ways to build yourself a character that was too weak to compete.

I would say that the best idea for this would be just porting subclasses to another class, say rogue, and then multiclass with that class.

Say you wanted Champion/Battle Master

Port champion over to the Rogue or maybe Barbarian and take a multiclass with that one.

BM Fighter 3/ Champion Barbarian 3 (or whenever they get their subclass) would work nicely for this effect.

Your critical range increases and eventually your crit die increases and you get some maneuvers.

For EK I would say go rogue with the subclass since arcane trickster already exist and this isn't much different.

Every time I see this, it makes me wish I could find a way to get "Building the Perfect Class" to work for 5e, the way 5e classes are designed.
