So, I just read a threat about someone wanting to become a Worm that Walks. I personally don't think that I would allow any of my PCs to be one, but then again, I've never DMed an epic campaign. On that thought, I realized that, inspite of having the ELH, I couldn't figure out how the spell Gathering of Maggots (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/wormThatWalks.htm) would work. The casting time says 7 days. I've read the rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/spellsIntro.htm) in the ELH, but I still have doubts regarding spells with such a long duration and rituals.
Does the spellcaster continuously cast the spell over 7 days?
If yes, is he allowed to do anything else during the day?
If no, can he be relieved by another spellcaster; and if that's so, who will make the spellcraft check?
Does this work like crafting where you have to make a check every day? Or is it just one check after the 7 days?
Obviously a spellcaster of such high a level could find means to sustain his/her body whilst casting a spell with a long duration. But is that an unintended effect of the rules system or was it purposely made this way to make casting such spells extremely difficult?
