Tsakáli Traits

The exact origins of the tsakáli are unknown, however some believe they were created in the image of a long-forgotten deity. Despite the occasional wicked tsakáli, most become well-respected shortly after their arrival in a community. While tsakáli often maintain close with between 10 to 30 people, they prefer adventuring alone or with one other person.

Tsakáli appear relatively human-like; their main distinguishing features are the possession of a jackal-shaped head, and a very short, thick coat of fur. Like tieflings, tsakáli have eyes of solid color, often in hues of blue, green, or gold.

All tsakáli have an intricate relationship with life and death. This can manifest itself in many ways: they may pursue the arcane secrets of necromancy, devote themselves to the protection of life, or enforce the balance between.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Age. Tsakáli mature at the same rate as humans but can live for up to a century longer.
Alignment. Most tsakáli are lawful, deeply respecting the natural order of the world.
Size. Tsakáli range from slightly under 6 feet to well over 7 feet tall and have slender, muscular builds. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Tsakáli Weapon Training. You have proficiency with the dagger, sickle, glaive, halberd, and scimitar.

Desert Sun Tsakáli

Desert sun tsakáli are usually varying shades of blonde and copper. Spending much of their history in the scorching heat of the east, desert sun tsakáli have a greater resistance to fire than their siblings.

In ancient times, there was a great tsakáli city, said to have been a meeting place for the various races of the world. Tsakáli merchants would learn many languages, sometimes maintaining up to ten dialects at once, and often be able to decipher others based on context alone. Although this ability has disappeared from many tsakáli bloodlines, desert sun tsakáli have maintained it throughout the ages.

Among adventuring desert sun tsakáli, clerics, bards, fighters, and paladins are very common.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Desert Sun Resistance. You have resistance to fire damage.
Natural Linguist. You can cast the comprehend languages spell once per day as a 1st-level spell.

Urban Tsakáli

Urban tsakáli are defined by their raven-black fur and serene presence. In the past, they were often the caretakers of the dead or expert alchemists, and their long history has granted them both a resistance to poison and a slight influence over the mortally wounded. Today, as their name suggests, urban tsakáli have adopted a life among many others.

Although many adventuring urban tsakáli pursue a knowledge of necromancy, they are rarely evil in nature; utilizing the remains of the dead is not considered taboo in tsakáli society. Family and those friendly to the tsakáli are however treated to a proper burial, and generally forbidden from use in the necromantic art.

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 1.
Urban Tsakáli Resilience. You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.
Weighing of the Heart. You know the spare the dying cantrip.

Quartz Tsakáli

Obsidian Tsakáli

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 1.

Overall I think you have something very interesting. In general they are like Elves but you gave them a slight increase in speed but you deferred resistances to subclasses and even though they are a little better you have fewer magical selection. So all in all nicely balanced, but you need expand upon flavor and add to Darkvision to include: "You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray."

Thanks! Fixed Darkvision. You're right, they are very similar to elves, though I hadn't realized that's how they'd evolved. Originally they were Charisma based, with Strength and Intelligence subraces. I suppose they would've still had darkvision, keen senses, and weapon training in common though.

I'll work on some more flavor today, specifically the differences between the subraces.

Thanks! Just added a bit more description for the base race, and a couple flavor paragraphs for each subrace. Working on a third subrace as well, aiming for it to be more nature-based.
