Hey there playgrounders!

If there's any one thing that's the best part of D&D, it's building your own character with enormous freedom. However, coming up with a truly great character backstory/personality can be tough sometimes. That's why this thread marks the beginning of subsequent threads dedicated to coming up for great concepts built around a specific class. Tonight's special is the humble fighter.

So, tell your fellow forum-goers great ideas you have about what a great fighter character's personality and backstory could be. It could be an idea you've used/seen in a previous game, or it could be something you just came up for this thread. Try to include both backstory and personality. Also bear in mind that even if you have a beautiful, long backstory about how your character came to her/his current situation, it might not come up much in an actual D&D game. So try to keep it as succinct as possible without watering it down.

Example:

Backstory: Erick the Bloody was a notorious Half-Orc bandit leader who terrorized the countryside. However, after years of causing wanton bloodshed, he saw the error of his ways and left banditry behind. He turned to adventuring to provide for himself while working towards redemption. Unfortunately, Erick is also a terrible liar and often states his full name and nickname when asked who he is. In a feeble effort to cover up his old identity, he now calls himself Erick the Bloody Nice Guy.

Personality: Erick is loathe to talk about his old status as a bandit chief. His first reaction is to solve problems with violence, but nowadays he restrains himself quickly when he's mad. He often depends on putting his bloodlust towards useful purposes to prevent violent outbursts. Loves torturing devils, demons, and other such evil creatures when given the chance, as he knows it is acceptable to cause truly evil creatures to suffer. His grammar is poor. Erick has a tendency to jump into fights when not needed.

Anyway, I can't to see what you all post!

I feel like that fits more of a barbarian background

Luc was a simple farmboy who lived with his aunt and uncle. In his teens he met with a band of roving traders and bought two constructs from them to help with work around the farm. Little did he know that one of these constructs was carrying an encoded message from a beautiful priestess, whose kingdom was a sworn enemy of the ruling emperor. Luc's farm was attacked by the emperor's forces while he was away, his aunt and uncle killed, and the farm put to the torch. With nothing left but the plea for help from the priestess, he set off with the help of a wizened old sage to the local township, a wretched hive of scum and villainy where they enlisted the aid of a roguish ship's captain to transport them to the emperor's fortress to rescue the priestess.

There, got the 4 classes (fighter, rogue, wizard, cleric) and a marketable story hook.

Ragnar always wanted to become a housecarl and escape the impoverished surroundings of his father's farm. The land his father owned was cold and his harvests poor so every helping hand was needed to keep the family alive. Quick to anger Ragnar's father Bornir often lashed out at his wife. So Ragnar knocked out his father and fled taking his mother Olava and a few belongings with him to join a mercenary group in town.

He was promptly trained to fight bandits, packs of wolves and worse and has now chosen to leave the companionship of his fellow mercenaries behind to lead a life full of adventuring, alcohol and many riches.

This way you'd also have a rival NPC named Mathilda ready to go.

Goodman Games' PC Pearls book has some awesome background seeds, but I'm pretty sure it's copyrighted material so I won't copy any of it here. Try to find a copy, though; it's got some great ideas.
