View Full Version : Spell Mastery + Headband of Intellect = More mastered spells?

I was researching this spell online, but surprisingly more people than I thought were saying by RAW, having a headband of intellect +6 will increase the number of spells mastered by 3 when you take the feat. Is this true? I always thought it was like skill points, so only your natural int modifier mattered.

Does it say that it's like skill points? No, all it says is "your int modifier", without any mention of how you got that modifier. Maybe that's not the way it should be, but that's the way it is.

Yeup that's the rule as Chronos says. I think that's the way it should be too. It makes sense and isn't broken. RAW you could save your xp without leveling, rent or "try on" a +6 headband and immediately level up before removing it. RAI, I think you should have to wear the headband for most of a level to get the benefits for the feat, to represent how you're learning the feat over time and not only the instant you level up.

3.5 or PF?

3.5 is a clear no, but PF is maybe.

3.5 is a clear no

Would you mind elaborating? I've never seen any relevant rules about this.

It is 3.5, why is it a clear no? 3.5 and PF seem identical for that feat.

It sounds to me that it would be the same as using an item to qualify for a feat or PRC, which I'm pretty sure is allowed. If you do allow that, then by extension, you should be allowed to get more spells for spell mastery (though maybe you can't use them if you aren't wearing the item, just like you wouldn't qualify for the feat).

It isn't the feat that changed, what changed is the way PF handles permanent intelligence increases and items that give an intelligence increase.

As far as I know 3.5 makes no distinction between permanent and temporary bonuses other than saying enhancement bonuses to intelligence don't give more skillpoints, and that fox's cunning doesn't increase the number of spells you can prepare.

In 3.5 you should be able to get more spells from spell mastery just fine.

Thank you magicalmagicman for asking this question. For some reason i thought spell mastery was restricted to 2 spells. Taking this feat a couple times will completely eliminate my wizard's dependence on spell books. Tattoos can be erased or damaged in combat (thus worthless), but this! :D
