If the game starts above level 1, should I let the character begin with items that are crafted using craft reserves from previous levels? Or should they start by draining their current level's reserve?

What's typical of your games? What would you do?

Personally i wouldn't, mostly because artificers are strong enough without it. Chances are that he would have blown most of it on consumables like scrolls anyway.

If a player insists on being that pedantic about it i'd insist that they also obey WBL guidelines. So no using craft reserve XP to make stuff you wouldn't have had the gold for at that point.

I would let them have appropriate items. It's a big part of the class, no sense denying it to them. Just make sure they're items that could actually have been created at that level.
