Hi there guys!

I have a character that I would really like a sketch or portrait for. And since I have the artistic ability of a wet noodle... I think outsourcing it would be much better.

Do you guys have any good sources on character portraits? Not the stick figure type that people use for avatars around here. But something more like a portrait? Perhaps somewhere where a guy could commission something custom?

I would appreciate any leads!

I see plenty of portrait-worthy things done on deviantart.com. I think the most you would have to do is message someone there, and wait for a reply..... or search through the billion or so images they already have for display and find something you like.

I did this (http://ravens-cry.deviantart.com/art/Rock-Dwarf-Character-Portrait-283651221) a while back for a fellow forumite , though because I am restricted to a mouse wheel at present, I'd be better at doing something in pencil.

Heromachine can take a while to use, but is pretty darn great. Here's the most recent version (http://www.heromachine.com/heromachine-3-lab/), but I'm more familiar with this version (http://www.heromachine.com/heromachine-2-5-character-portrait-creator/) (and found the interface to be friendlier).

www.Heroforge.com if you want to make a miniature of your character. Try deviant artists, they often take commissions (typically, anybody who is good enough to draw what you want and is not a personal friend is good enough to charge you money for it)

Also try: createyourminis.com which is still in kickstarter. His prices are better if you get on board with the kickstarter. He's also got some sweet options Heroforge doesn't have yet, though it is possible they might get them eventually.

I personally like to do one of the followings:
1) Look for things in Deviantart as suggested (Great resource)
2) Use Google (Type things like "warrior woman"/ "Halflign rogue" or such)
3) Look for portraits from well known games whose art I liked, such as:
Icewind dale (https://www.google.co.il/search?q=icewind+dale+portraits&sa=X&biw=1077&bih=909&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&ei=WHSeVIusAY6xaYCkgdAJ&ved=0CEAQ7Ak)
Baldur's gate (https://www.google.co.il/search?q=baldur+s+gate&biw=1077&bih=909&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=UnaeVMqMJ9LfaoWAgeAF&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#tbm=isch&q=baldur%27s+gate+portraits+)
Shadowrun returns (https://www.google.co.il/search?q=icewind+dale+portraits&sa=X&biw=1077&bih=909&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&ei=WHSeVIusAY6xaYCkgdAJ&ved=0CEAQ7Ak#tbm=isch&q=shadowrun+returns+portraits)
4) One of my players have an ever growing archive of pics. If I'm really stuck, I go looking through them, though that is much more time consuming.

Are you wanting realism (as real as fantasy can get, at least) or something less so?

Thanks for the replies guys!

I took some time to check this out and it's looking good. Thanks!

I may check this out when I get back to my place. Unfortunately I'm on a tablet right now.

Yeah, about as real as it gets.

Have you tried browsing through / posting a request in the Dungeons and Dreamboats threads in the Roleplaying Games section?

I have not. Mostly because I have no idea what you're talking about. *laughs* Where can I find that?

Here you are (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?350310-Dungeons-and-Dreamboats-VI-Because-Breasts-It-s-not-complex&p=18581835#post18581835). That's thread #6, there's 5 other ones loaded with fantasy / sci-fi character pictures. Although it'll take you ages to sift through all that, they're pretty good with requests if you have something specific you're looking for, but are still somewhat flexible.

I appreciate that. If the things I have in process fall through I may just be messaging you.

Thanks! I totally missed that myself.
