For the wizards of my world I thought it would be nice to include some mage-guild type institutions where wizards could find ritual components spell formulas and the like. My solution was wizard houses, large families of wizards that support their members an example of one could look something like this

House name: Gygaxia

Main city: Greyhawk

Other cities: Azure city, Hogwarts, Cario

the main city would be where the main library and head of the family would live while other cities would hold branches of the family. In addition each house would have a special ability. So a less joking approach might look like this

House name: Korvikkia

Main city: Tonac

Other cities: see special sub

Special: there is a 2-in-6 chance of an outpost being found in each village
3-in-6 chance in a small town
4-in-6 chance in a large town
5-in-6 chance in any city
Background: The Korvikki family was once the most powerful in all of Aon. The sheer number of cousins and relatives that claimed to belong to the house was at one time estimated to be as high as 1/6 of Aon. All of this was ruled by arguably the most powerful wizard Aon had ever seen. Alexander Korvikki II had literally wrought an empire out of a defunct house of wizards and pure magical might. Unfortunately Master Korvikki died without naming an heir and his three sons fought a six year long civil war over who would ascend to the throne during which time other wizard houses and ordinary nobility took much of the land and wealth of the Korvikki family. They are still by and large the most widespread wizard house around but they are but a shadow of their former might.

any suggestions for house names and special abilities would be appreciated as well as thoughts on the system

This seems like a neat idea. Did you want playgrounders to make a couple of houses? Or just comment on those you have?

Both of these things would be wonderful but their is really only on actual serious house to comment on.

Heh. Sure. Perhaps you could drop some background details? Who are the Korvikkian Wizards?

And just so I can say I contributed:

House Name: Farseer (The Diviners' House)

Located: Main Guild Hall is secreted behind numerous wards, past innumerable dungeons, and some claim it to be held within a demi-plane hidden in an egg hidden in a turtle hidden in a duck hidden in an oubliette hidden in a chest hidden in the eye of a needle hidden in a desert hidden in the ocean hidden on another demiplane that is entirely made of oceans containing deserts containing needles containing chests containing oubliettes containing ducks containing turtles containing eggs containing demiplanes. There is a backdoor for members.

Secondary locations: Exactly where it would be most convenient for them to be. Often right under the noses of their enemies, and just around the corner from their friends.

The Diviners' House, as Farseer is sometimes known, is a Wizard Guild exclusively for Divination specialists and all those who seek knowledge for knowledge's sake. They explicitly know everything and not!everything in every universe and out of every universe. This knowledge is restricted to a need-to-know basis, and advancement in the guild is dependent on learning these and other mysteries. They will always set up shop where a member will need them moments before being needed, and will always disappear before potential enemies can find their locations.

Knowing everything is their business. In fact, Knowledge, as an objective, measurable force is used as currency and Rank amongst the guild. In some cases they have been known to distill knowledge into a fine liquor, or a collection of coins, or grains of sand, and use these as physical trade items. They work as information brokers, and they do not play favorites (although they do play the horses).
