Some of you have known Lurk Aleman for many years, others only recently. He is a well known traveling ale merchant. Once a year he comes east from his home in Baldur's Gate to the Dalelands to hawk his special "Fire Snout Ale", which is quite beloved by all, rich and poor. He has made this journey for the last fifteen years. Lurk is escorted by a band of mercenaries from Baldur's Gate to Porskur, where he meets up with local mercenaries and adventurers who aid him in his travels to the Dalelands. Once in Archendale, he once more sheds his guards and picks up a new cadre of friends. From there he zig zags his way across the Dales, hawking his wares and making quite a bit of gold for himself. It was on his meandering journey through the Dalelands that each of the members of the company the Dwarf now keeps joined up. Lurk promised steady pay for reliable work. He is a short, fat, long bearded Shield Dwarf who is far happier telling a good story than he is fighting Orcs or Goblins, which is why he loves to surround himself with six, seven, sometimes even ten guardians. The simple life is his motto and by that creed he lives. Each member of the party has been traveling with the Dwarf for just over a month now. Highmoon is one of his favorite towns and so saves it for the end of his journey. With your services no longer required, Lurk pays each of his "brave guards" fifty gold and hands each a small bottle of Fire Snout Ale ("to remember him by").

From Lurk's wagon, the group heads over to a local pub to have a drink and decide what to do next. A low fire burns in the hearth of this comfortable common room. The tavern, called the Gilded Lady, is empty of patrons except for a lone human man. Not long after you sit down with your drinks, a group of tough-looking humans saunters into the tavern to the center of the room. The man in the corner leans back into the shadows of his booth. However, the seven new arrivals spot him. Four move to the front and back doors, while three cross the room, cornering the patron.

She was the odd person out in the group. At least the half orc and the drow were adults but Maria was only 9 years old. And nothing that really stood out about her differentiating her with most 9 year olds. She was small for her age, standing about a few inches short of 4 feet, and was lean and lanky. She had long, reddish brown hair and hazel eyes and was fairskinned with a touch of sallowness. The girl wore plain, regular clothing consisting of a blue shirt, brown pants, a pair of black boots and a hooded red cloak. She kept her backpack under the table and protectively between her legs.

While she enjoyed her time with Lurk and her adventurous journey with the caravan, she was happy to finally arrive at Highmoon. Even being from the Dalelands and all and being used to the outdoors from time to time, and actually enjoying it as much as she enjoyed libraries and tomes, the constnat bumping and thunping from the wagon was often hard on her backside. And she missed a warm meal and a warm bed. She was not a ranger. The hard earth and daily rations tended to be tiresome after a while. Still given the 50 gold that she was paid it was well worth it. As always she put it in her money pouch which she always kept in her backpack.

Maria took Fire Snout Ale and even tried it. And regretted it immediately. It actually tasted good to a certain extent but it burned her throat and made her cough uncontrollably for a while. She she stowed it in her backpack and decided not to try it again. She drank milk and for had beef stew which felt good in her tummy and a far better meal than rations. For the most part she minded her own business and kept to herself. That is until the tough looking humans arrived. Immediately alarm bells started ringing in her head. She did not need to be an adult or a sage to know that what they were doing meant trouble. Giving Brochdern a slight nudge with her foot under the table to get his attention she gestures her head towards the newcomers.

When Tirel set out to make his fortune he hadn't expected to be dragged all across the Dales. Keeping rations and watches wasn't something he was used to in the comfort of Waterdeep, and he certainly wasn't all that trusting of the ragtag group of "help" the good man Lurk had hired. He had kept mostly to himself along the way, but couldn't resist a chance to join the others in relaxing at the local pub.

Not long after he starts to down his Fire Snout Ale, he notices seven rough and haggard looking men enter the room and sends a glance their way. Men in groups of three or more always seem to be in the mood for mischief. He looks to their body language to determine their intentions.

Insight Check [roll0]

Noticing the stranger seemingly beset upon by these men, Tirel excuses himself from the table - grabbing his Ale on the way - and moves towards the stranger in the corner booth. "Ho there! I believe I owe you a drink. If it weren't for you, those bugbear brigands would surely have made off with all we had. You'll have to show me how to fight like that sometime. This one's on me, as well as a few more if you'd be so kind as to share a few techniques."

Failing to see any issue, Tirel buries himself in his drink and seems to be lost in thought.

Ah, evening in an inn. A time when she could take off her heavy cloak, rest it on the back of the chair and enjoy the stares of other patrons, whether they be of horror or lust. It almost took the fun out of it that there was only one other guy in the bar. But just having that damn thing off was good enough for Valias. Sometimes she wished she could just get that twice damned sun out of the sky. If never seemed to matter all that much back in Luskan. Then again, Luskan was so disease ridden she was pretty sure it created a protective smog from the sun's rays.

Leaning back in her chair and staring at her ale bottle thoughtfully, the drow barely lifted her head when thugs began to file in. She couldn't just drink this, her metabolism didn't work that way anymore. Usually she'd borrow a whore for the evening, get them as drunk as possible and feed off of them, but again they were the only people in the inn right now. She guessed she'd just save it for now. Could make a good bribe later on.

Though she didn't care when the thugs filed in like that, she certainly did care when they blocked the exits. She didn't like being blocked off like this. It made her uncomfortable. Standing up from her chair, Valian pushed it back in before tucking her ale bottle into her discarded cloak and walking over to the thugs standing by their fellow patron. Grabbing a hold of one by the shoulder, Valian forced him to look into her eyes before continuing. "You're disturbing our first night in an inn for some time. You're trying to cut off any escape we have. And you're ganging up on the only other person in the inn I could amuse myself with if I got bored. Explain. NOW."

The newcomers seem quite ruff around the edges. They are definitely up to no good.

The group is spurred into action. Tirel calls out, asking if his "friend" wants a drink. One of the ruffians saunters over to block the Ardent's path. The man's face has contorted into a scowl, while his hand has drifted down to the hilt of the mace that dangles from his belt.

Meanwhile, Thanos asks the thuggish looking men why they are guarding the doors. One of them, a man with slicked back black hair grunts, "Doesn't concern you. Sit down."

Velias stands up and demands a reason for what is going on. The same ruffian that is blocking Tirel's path stops in his track and visibly recoils. After a few breaths to regain his composure, he points his finger at the Vampire and spits, "Shut up you cave elf. We don't take orders from your kind. Sit down and shut up... Or else." The man has firmly gripped the hilt of his mace, ready to use it at a moment's notice if the group causes trouble. Velias notices beads of sweat rolling down the ruffian's face.

The leader of the group, a scarred man in chainmail, leans menacingly over the table of the patron. “You’re the one, ain’t you?” he asks. The other man recoils in the booth, mumbling.

You hear him manage to stutter, “I—I—d-don’t know what you’re talking about.” The scarred man seizes the shirt of the tavern patron, fumbles with the man’s shirt collar, and yanks out a holy symbol.

The holy symbol that the man in the corner wears is made of oak and bears the symbol of a rose. The symbol is that of the goddess Chauntea, a benevolent deity of nature and the harvest.

Velias blinks in shock for a moment, before she begins to snigger. Then she began to laugh, hard enough that she had to bend over and hold her stomach. Tears dotted her eyes as she kept laughing, trying to get it under control. "Oh, oh dear Lolth you're so dead," she panted between laughs, finally calming down as she wiped the tears from her eyes and looked at the thug, still snickering.

Finally getting that under control, the drow grabbed the thug by the shoulders before lunging forward, attempting to sink her fangs into his neck.

Brochdern rested on the bench at the table, his head leaning against the wall, with his eyes shut. He had finished his roast and potatoes and enjoyed two pints of the Fire Snout Ale. Now he was sleepy, but didn't want to retire to his room just yet, especially with the little girl still awake. He hears the rustling of clothing and opens one eye to see Valias' cloak falling to the floor. She sure did enjoy flaunting her assets. Mind the little one Valias, Brochdern says before shutting his eye again. Almost on cue, Maria begins to cough uncontrollably. Brochdern opens his other eye, the storm-grey orb with vivid purple scars radiating from it, and sees the little girl struggling with a flagon of Fire Snout Ale. He snickers, but sits up to take the mug from her, I told you you wouldn't like it. She kicks him and gestures across the room, and Brochdern turns to see seven ruffians enter the Gilded Lady and block the exits.

A few make their way to the only other patron in the place, sitting alone in the corner. Tirel, Velias, and Thanos all act to challenge or hinder the men. Brochdern takes a deep breath and then gives Maria an incredulous look, Elves, he says. Downing the last bit of Fire Snout in an abandoned mug on the table, he rises from his bench and draws his longspear, Stay under cover by the table Maria. If you have to help, he looks around at the Gilded Lady, try not to burn the place down.

When the men grab the lone patron and start harassing him, Velias lunges forward and grabs for the ruffian's throat.

So, the forced of EVIL (capitalization not optional) were active in this town and this man had come to find people to stop it.. despite not being able to handle a few thugs. Or maybe he'd seen that they were getting involved and had decided to let them handle it so he didn't need to display his skills. That would be the optimal move, but that assumed he was talented enough to know what was the case.

"Define 'asserted'," Velian asks. Unlike Grummush or Lolth, Shar tended to be a little less local with her particular brand of religious fervor. On the other hand, it would be hypocritical of her to go in just because they worshiped an evil god when she did the same.

Ever on the lookout for opportunity, Tirel finds that this priest's situation fits in perfectly with his plans. He needed capital and he needed prestige, both of which 'defending a poor village' could assist with. Of course he wished to help the man but he could not do so alone.

Brochdern's ears perk at the mention of Shar. When he underwent the ceremony to become an Eye of Gruumsh, he received a vision, revelation, into the true nature of Gruumsh. Many interpret the scenes as flashbacks into the dawn of time, when the gods were first establishing themselves on Toril. Much work goes into deciphering what has been seen. Many share the same visions, but occasionally an orc becomes an Eye of Gruumsh and claims to see new insights. All of these must be vetted and discussed.

One such vision is of a woman's figure, made up of darkness. Some believe it to be a silhouette of a woman, perhaps a goddess cast into darkness or disgraced. Others think it a shadow of a woman, someone that had passed from that time, or had once been significant but no longer. Others believe her to be the Mistress of Night; Shar, the Dark Goddess. The woman in the vision is significant because she is seen at the time of Gruumsh's fall and the betrayal of the orcs. The few orc scholars and elder Eyes believe whoever the obscured lady is, she is integral to learning the secret of Gruumsh's previous nature and his current state.

Could this be a coincidence? The theory concerning Shar among the New Eyes has gained some momentum. The Dark Goddess has influence over trickery, betrayal, secrets, thieves, and loss. And it is suspected that she gained Gruumsh's confidence and later betrayed him, causing him to lose his legacy and become the mockery of himself that he is today.

As a believer, Brochdern must meditate on his visions and revelations, and follow leads whenever and wherever they present themselves. Could this be one?

Brochdern comes out of his thinking to hear Tirel pose a question, And what reason would anyone have to assist your village aside from their own goodwill?

The half-orc turns his stormeye to his companion, Those of us with the strength to fight have the burden to do so when others cannot. And if this..., he spares a pitying glance at the acolyte, Gevarn is it? Yes, if this Gevarn is who they send when they are in need, well, I think it is clear where the burden falls.

Besides, Shar is selfish and of a single purpose; to further her ends. If her minions are interested in that little town, there must be more there than even they know.

The priest looks overjoyed when Brochdern and Thanos say they will help him, “I thank you all for coming to my aid. Having seen how well you handled yourselves with those thugs, might I beseech you to come to the aid of our beleaguered town? The lord of the town would surely reward you if you manage to find this cult and eliminate it. You would also have the thanks of me, Sister Linora, and the Great Mother if you would lend us your aid.”

I'm truth, he had already resolved to assist the priest. He was happy though that his party was so ready to come to the man's aid. While escorting the traveling ale merchant had been an ordeal all its own, he knew he was capable of more than being a mere hired hand.

Velias really didn't like the idea of charging into a town and uprooting an entire religion just because they were EVIL (capitilization not optional), but she did like the idea of a reward. More importantly, she disliked the idea of being seperated from her comrades. They seemed eager to help the church. Not necessarily the TOWN, but the church. If she wanted to stick with them she'd need to play life and go along with it too, even if she had some misgivings.

"Fine. Maybe this Sister Linora has some more information we can have before making up our minds. Either way just getting to the town seems the first step no matter what," she agreed.

"Thank you, thank you! I just know you will be able to help protect Winterhaven from Shar! We should leave immediately! I will buy provisions from the barkeep, then we will make our way across the East Way, up into the Thunder Peaks and then to Winterhaven." The man stumbles out of the booth and requisitions several supplies from the Barkeep, including four wineskins and one waterskin (the latter for Maria), a backpack full of trail rations, a (very small) basket full of salted pork and three tents.

The priest estimates that the Highmoon is about a hundred miles away from Winterhaven, so the journey will take about four and a half days. The road is well tread (as far as roads go these days). You don't pass many merchants or other travelers, it seems people are avoiding Winterhaven and the Thunderpeaks these days (a fact which does not escape Gevran's notice (and makes him all the more anxious)). On the third night of travel, the party finds themselves sitting around a roaring campfire. The three tents have been set up, the smallest for Maria, a large one for Velias, Thanos and Tirel, while a third for Gaven and Brochdern. The smell of roasting pork permeates the air, its sticky sweet scent makes your mouths salivate with desire.

"Now, now," says the priest, "There is enough for all of us... Well at least for this single meal. It shall be our best meal!" Gevarn looks to his would-be saviors and asks, "We have been on the road for three days now and I barely know anything Winterhaven's newly minted protectors. From where do you hail, what are your life stories?" He turns the stick over to cook the other side of the pork, "Come now, a watched meal does not cook any faster. How did you come to the Dalelands? You seem to have formed a cohesive group before your timely intervention. How came you to be friends, nay, comrades?"

Tirel's stomach rumbles a bit louder than he'd like as he eyes the salted pork wantingly. He hadn't had much to eat along their journey, as his appetite had dropped almost entirely. Striking down the men in the Gilded Lady had been the right thing to do - and he was glad he had done it - but he wasn't sure he could ever get used to the idea of ending a life. It was just so abrupt.

Sitting around the fire he heard the priest's questions. Thinking them fair, he replied after his Drow companion, "How any troupe comes to be is simply a matter of coincidence. We were all in the right place at the right time. Much like how we were there that evening in the Gilded Lady. Regarding my 'comrades' history, you'll have to hear their own accounts as they tell them better than I could. As for myself, I'm from the shining city of Waterdeep", he says sarcastically. He obviously wasn't too big a fan of his home. "Never had much, and haven't done much, yet. I'm looking to change all of that."

Grasping his wine skin, he turns towards his other companions eagerly. Always a fan of personal histories, he could never pass up a good story. And this company he kept told the best stories.

The last few days have been uneventful, but it has given time for Brochdern to continue his studies. Each morning, he warms up with mock combat to keep the edge on his skills, and practices his use of the greatspear. He has come a long way with it, but is not yet comfortable bringing it to bear in combat. Soon though, he thinks he will be able to master it as he has the longspear. In the evenings, he meditates on his visions before retiring each night. So far, he has seen nothing to indicate if he is on the right path. It seems a long shot that he would find anything at this hamlet simply because acolytes of Shar are involved. But then, he had nothing lined up after the caravan job. Until he received a more clear revelation of what he should do, he would help these people against this dark cult, and maybe stumble upon some clues in the process.

It is the third evening, and the group has camped out for the night. The smell of roast pork has pulled Brochdern from his meditations, and after a few fruitless attempts at avoiding the scent, he finally gives in and joins the others around the campfire.

Brochdern listens to the others as they share some of their life story with Gavern. After Maria quiets down, he adds some of his own.

I hail from Many Arrows, in the Spine of the World. It is a very young nation, but though it came out of war, it has done much to bring peace to the area. Not many see it that way though, and I speak as much of the orcs within the kingdom as I do of some of its neighbors. Many of the orcs grow restless in the kingdom. They long for war. They see Many Arrows as a battlement to gather strength and from which to attack. They clash with the rulership, and with supporters of the dynasty. The kingdom was fractured, despite what it showed to the outside world.

My order started nearly a century ago, after the Year of the Blue Fire. The Spellplague's impact was felt all throughout the world, and still in some places its effects linger. Gruumsh's most fanatical followers, his Eyes, are sometimes privy to the Sight. After the blue fire, something was revealed to them. Something only the wisest could understand. I can tell you some of what they saw.

In the beginning, when it is believed the gods first formed of the void, they were equals. They each had the spark of creation within them, and yearned to form matter out of the ether. Much of this you will already have heard. They formed the sphere and named it Abeir-Toril. And they each seeded it with features. But this was not enough. The gods endeavored to make life. And so each set about creating a creature in their own image. Soon after, they laid claims to the lands where their creatures would live and prosper. This is a common belief. Moradin chose the mountains, Corellon the forests, Yondalla the plains and river shores, Garl Glittergold the hills and so on and so forth.

Now this is where accounts differ and where the revelations of the Eyes in the Year of the Blue Fire are revolutionary. The common account is that Gruumsh, made slow to choose by his greed and avarice, grew enraged that no land was left for his orcs to claim, and in a rage he rampaged across the world laying waste to creation and swearing revenge against the gods. We have been led to believe that this was his nature all along, and that this dispute was inevitable. The gods allied against him, and after losing his eye to Corellon he was forced to retreat, taking the dark lands in the caves and pits of the world for his orcs.

But this is not the truth. As I said, the gods were equals in that time, and I do not mean only in strength, but in character and virtue. They all worked together to create the world and its nature. Why would Moradin or Corellon work alongside Gruumsh if he was as we know him to be today? Because he was not that way. He was noble and had honor. When Gruumsh saw that all the lands were taken and he had nothing to claim for the orcs, he offered the orcs to be the protectors of the world, giving them the strength and fortitude to defend all others. To that end, he made no attempt to contest the land claims, instead offering that the orcs would never have a land to call their own, but rather spread into the world throughout to live among the other peoples as defenders. That was to be the role of orcs in the history of the world... Brochdern seems lost in thought at this moment, staring into the flame as if he could see something.

But something... happened. We do not know what. I have seen the visions myself. There, is a woman. But the details of her face cannot be made. Only her shape. She appears like a void, totally black. We see her over Gruumsh, and he is ruined. He emerges from the darkness changed. Enraged. One eye gone. The orcs follow him into battle against the other gods, but they are no match against a pantheon. The rest is... well, history.

We believe that the emergence of this woman was a great portent, and that she somehow changed Gruumsh into what he is today. I think that the events of the Spellplague may have weakened whatever hold that power has on him. Why else would his Chosen be Obould? He is unlike an orc in many ways, displaying a patience and cunning and foresight not known among my people. And a nation that makes peace with its neighbors? Why? To what end? This flies in the face of traditional doctrine. We among my order believe Gruumsh is fighting this taint that has held him captive since the dawn of creation, and now we are aware of the fight.

Brochdern pauses enough to take another bite of his roast and a swig of wine. The order is still new. It had taken some time for the Eyes that had seen the Revelation to meet and discuss it and realize its ramifications. Still, cooperation between orcs was uncommon then. But faith often trumps all else, and slowly more Eyes met to discuss these visions. When Many Arrows was founded, a formal order was born. But it was not favored in the kingdom. The idea of a peaceful nation already rankled many of the orcs. The idea of a peaceful Gruumsh angered them to violence. We were allowed to practice our faith so long as we kept it to ourselves. But even that was not enough. As tensions continued to rise within the kingdom between the monarchy and those orcs that wanted war, Many Arrows was close to being ripped apart. Something was needed to keep the kingdom together.

They called it the Night of Gouging. We were scapegoats. Used by the monarch to pacify the warmongers. He gave them a target, and they came after us with vigor. But we are His Eyes. We had seen a glimpse of the treachery to come, though we did not know the extent. We were ready to fight the tribes that were most outspoken against us, and we made them pay dearly for every wound they inflicted. But even as we thinned the ranks of our enemies, the King's own guards and enforcers were coming to aid them. Then did we know we could not stay in the kingdom.

We fled. Many of us did not survive the night. And in the escape through the mountains we were separated and lost from one another. I eventually made my way into the Lurkwood, hoping my pursuers would not follow me out of the mountains. It is not a place I would soon return to, with dangers lurking around each tree. I stayed traveling west until I found the eastern leg of the Trade Way and made my way south to Longsaddle. From there, I found my way to Waterdeep. That's where I met Velias, or rather, where she spared me the wrath of a tavern full of self-rutting skuts. Remember? I thought you were an affection-peddler when I first saw you.

I did some work in Waterdeep for a time and came to know Tirel as well. Before long, we all had our reasons for wanting to leave. We made our way further south, met Marie and Thanos along the way, and fell in with that hogs-bodied dwarf. And now he we are. Or something like that.

Brochdern takes another bite out of his roast and leaves the floor for someone else to take over.

Gevarn listens intently to Tirel's and Maria's statements. In reply to the former he says, "I have not visited Luskan before but have heard it is a city of sails. Perhaps someday you will return there, fat off the bounty of mercenary work, and impress those whom you left behind?" In response to Maria's curt sentences he merely nods and states, "I would not dream of making you uncomfortable, little one. I do not wish to pry, merely pass the time." Gevarn seems absolutely enthralled by the breadth and depth of Brochdern's tale. "I have never known a follower of Grummsh to have such heretical beliefs. It warms my heart to know such Orcs exist, even if they live at the very edge of the known world. I hope your order grows and grows until one day it becomes the dominant sect of Grummush's faiths. Although I personally can do little to aid your cause (myself being a simple priest), I will tell others of your sect. If we can spread the word far enough, and wide enough, then perhaps we can one day find powerful lords to aid you in spreading your faith to all the Orcs of the south!"

The pork finishes cooking and the priest doles out a large hunk to each member of the party (the largest going to the mage). After a few bites, the party hears rustling in the trees and bushes to the south.

You do not recall anything too specific about the Shadowfel being connected to Winterhaven, although you do seem to remember there being an ancient tower or some other kind of fortification lying a few leagues away from the town. For some reason your brain connects the idea of it and the Shadowfel being connected but you cannot, for the life of you, remember why.

Maria is enjoying her dinner as she keeps to herself. The girl does offer some of hers to the others, not really being the greedy type but will eat what is offered to nonetheless. Still considering the Half-Orc's tale, Tirel is oblivious to his surroundings as he muses on the idea of a protectorate of Half-Orc devotees. It didn't sound all that bad to be honest. He had heard the accusations towards Gruumsh and had no reason to consider them false until now. Brochdern's story left Tirel doubting his own beliefs, and besides he had no reason to lie.

Hearing Maria whisper, "I just saw a back of a tattered boot being pulled through the bushes over there. We might want to be ready for combat." Tirel is put on edge, but he continues to sip on his wine and waits for anything to develop. Eyeing Brochdern and Thanos, he nods towards where Maria is looking and prepares himself to sprint into his tent. He had absentmindedly left his sword laying upon his bed-mat. "I really don't recommend sending out this Grummush nonsense any further," Velias noted, stretching as she covertly kept her eyes on the area in question. Whoever was ambushing them was pretty damn bad at it. "From my experience once you start preaching about a god and not following what they've laid out as their teachings, people get angry. The ones who like the old ways think you're a heretic, and those undecided think you're just tricking them. It doesn't end well. In fact it ends incredibly badly for everyone involved, even more so for everyone you roped into your little cult than whoever set it up to begin with."

That said, the drow had to smirk. "I can tell neither of you have been to Luskan, at least not more than for a casual glance. First, it smells MUCH worst than just rotten radishes. Secondly, nobody goes back to Luskan. 'Luskan doesn't exist, except for the people who live in it'. Once you're out, you're out forever."

He opts to stay at the camp but is on guard in the event that they come bursting through the treeline. As he speaks he sees Velias stalk through the brush in the direction of combat.

One Kobold runs out into the road and takes the long way around to get the flank on the Half-Orc, while two other Kobolds shiftily move in, deftly evading the Paladin's jabs. These two lizard-men take spears (more, sharpened sticks, really) of their own and stab at Brochdern's joints. Meanwhile, the last young-looking Kobold races out of cover, across the road and charges Thanos! At the same time, two heavily armored Kobolds - who were lying in wait - do the same, while a lizard-man with a sling pops out of hiding and shoots a sticky ball of glue at the elf's legs!

More kobolds reveal themselves and Thanos is beset upon. He quickly falls back, loosening arrows as he goes. Brochdern's own attack fails to land on the shifty kobolds and they quickly slink in to surround him, one of them finding a chink in his armor. He laughs at their efforts and strikes back, Pointy sticks? He fends off the two before him with his spear, and slams an armored backhand into the kobold that snuck behind him. He can hear the creature's neck break from the impact as it stumbles backward. Brochdern uses the opening to retreat back to Thanos. He lays a hand on the elf, Do not ignore the pain Thanos, but instead let it turn into fury! Rage at your enemies and keep fighting! He invests some of his divine power into Thanos to help the elf fight on despite his wounds, then he turns back to the kobolds and falls into a battle stance, For the glory of Gruumsh! he bellows.

Brochdern's spear thrust goes straight through the kobold's neck, and the wretched creature collapses limply to the ground just before reaching him. But Brochdern can barely pull his spear out of the corpse before the other kobolds descend on him. A flurry of swords, spears, and limbs batter him down to one knee before he regains his spear and rises back to his feet, bringing it to bear and forcing his enemies to relent for a moment. He'd clear the rabble first to focus on the deadlier threats, but the kobold warriors with the shields press their attacks on him. He is forced to retaliate. Better to have their attention, so that Thanos can disengage and assault the kobolds at his leisure.

With the final Kobold slain, the party breathes a collective sigh of relief. Gevran and Velias eventually tentatively meander up the road once they hear the all's clear signal. The group loots the corpses, finding twenty silver pieces. The rest of the Kobold's equipment has been too too badly damaged to be sold in the markets and/or was made of inferior quality to begin with. Tirel and Thanos stumble upon a partially hidden treasure chest behind one of the rocky outcroppings. Inside they find an ornate, fox fur leather cap, two scrolls and a flower-shaped silver broach.

The priest looks quite stunned at the carnage, "Amazing! You truly are great fighters! Praise be to Chauntea for allowing our paths to cross!" He yawns, "I am going to bed. We still have a long journey ahead of us..."

The campfire smoulders as the party awakens from a restful night of sleep. They gather up their supplies and continue on to Winterhaven. Gevarn is quite adamant about going quickly, so as to avoid any more, "Kobolds, ruffians or other undesirable interruptions." It is fairly obvious that the Priest has been quite shaken up over the last few days. You get the strong sense that he is not one to risk his life often, nor so easily.

The rutted East Way winds through the Thunder Peaks, eventually coming upon the walled town of Winterhaven. The town is nestled in a forested valley in the midst of the Thunder Peaks. The stone walls appear weathered but still manage to support the defensive palisades. Small thatched homes stand around Winterhaven, each fronting a small piece of farmland that’s been cleared of trees. Beyond the farms, to the west and south, are dark woods, and in all directions rise tall mountain peaks.

The party made good time getting here and arrives just after dusk. Two guards stand atop the palisades near the town gate. One of them, a taller man with a thick black beard and a warm cloak yells, "HALT! WHO GOES THERE?"

The Priest eagerly calls out, "It is I, Gevarn! My friends and I need to enter town."

The guard shakes his head, "If it were just you, I might look the other way but we have a strict policy to not open the gate at night, especially for strangers."

The priest looks to the members of the party, yearningly looking for help.

Velias didn't mind the dark. Back in Luskan she'd stayed up all night and slept all day. After leaving it however she'd been forced to adapt her hours of sleep. Most work was during the day after all. It had been a rough adjustment, but it was one she'd finally done. It still left her rather grumpy during the night however, when half of her brain was telling her she should be awake and the other half asleep. As such, being closed out of a town after a journey more inconvenient than it had had to have been really grated on her nerves.

Stepping forward, the drow glared up at the guards on the gate. "Open it. Now," she spoke firmly. "I am hungry, tried, worn out and in desperate need of a bath. I do NOT need a couple of green horns telling an authority figure of the town to take a hike. You are going to open this door. You KNOW you are. You can't keep him out, and the only reason you're even trying is to keep up appearances. Just cut out the middle man and open this damn door before I rip it open."

And while she normally lets the adults talk, she does know that now was not the time for arguments. Although she was not known for her tact as well. Normally she herself was brutally honest and straightforward. So she approached the guards and said in a cultured, polite voice, Sir we really are not a threat to this town and in fact are here to help at Gevarn's request. Please let us in. Do you really want me, a 9 year old girl to spend the night in the wilderness? Especially since we were almost accosted by kobolds a night earlier?

Then Maria pleads with the man.

He sighs. He groans. He opens the gate.

Gevarn strides in confidently, perhaps a bit too confidently given his inept handling of the local constabulary. Once inside the town he turns to the group and says, "Sister Linora is most likely conducting evening prayers. Seeing the walls of Winterhaven made Tirel feel uneasy. It had been years since he had set foot in a small settlement, and the idea of it still made him feel a bit unnerved. To tell the truth, not hearing the bustle of city life along this adventure had been hard for him.

He was glad to avoid too much conflict in getting through the gate and said to his party after they passed through, "I'm going to go look for some salves and poultices to help with your injuries. Make sure you get good rooms. It would be welcome respite from sleeping among the trees. I'll meet you all once I have everything I need."

He wasn't sure if such a small town would have anything in the way of an alchemist, but perhaps he could find an enthusiast. It couldn't hurt to get a feel on who the movers in the town were either. He began asking around.

And considering how colorful our group is, that's probably only going to be half a night if that," she noted wryly.

She was still nervous about this entire situation. Sure it was Shar, but they still had no evidence the cult was doing anything other than existing. It could just be a feud between the two religions, which is not something Vallias wanted to get tied up in. If they were up to something dark however... she wanted to know what they were getting into. If it was too heavy she could still back out, but once they had that meeting in the church and committed there was no going back. Brochdern slowly dragged his feet back to camp. His injuries were numerous and bloody, but he'd survive them. Foolish kobolds. They had no business stalking around the camp that way. Especially when there was no chance of beating the group. Recognizing strength is essential in surviving the world, and if one cannot see strength before them, then one cannot give it the respect afforded to it.

Once back by the fire, he removed his armor and tended to his wounds, muttering a prayer to Gruumsh to honor his fury and determination in combat against his enemies. When he was bandaged up, he fell fast asleep. No one woke him to take watch.

The next morning, Brochdern awoke feeling much better. His wounds were mostly healed, and much of the aches and pains of the previous night were gone. Despite the battle he was just in, he kept up with his practices, performing strikes, thrusts, counters, and blocks with his greatspear. After working up an appetite, he joined the others for breakfast and then they were soon on their way.

They continue toward Winterhaven along the East Way, and make it there with no hassle. The sun is already setting though, and the gatesmen refuse to let them in. Having a way with words is not one of Brochdern's strengths, so he lets the others take the lead here when Gevern fails to acquire them passage. But when Velias demands that the guards let them in, and Maria pleads with them, Brochdern struggles to stifle a laugh. Surprisingly though, the men are swayed by the little girl.

Tirel asks around town and finds out that Bairwin’s Grand Shoppe would be the best place to find some "adventuring" items this late in the day. Beyond that, the town's market will be full of vendors tomorrow morning. Although they specialize in mundane items, they some times have things an adventurer would like.

The Temple of Chauntea is a sturdy structure but only lightly peopled. Sister Linora is the head of the church but she prefers to go out into the farms that surround the town than stay in Winterhaven itself.

Vallias asks around town but finds people are far more worried about the Kobolds who plague the roads than any seemingly mysterious cult. In fact, most go so far as to claim that if there were a cult, they believe it would be outside of town—off in the dragon burial site southwest of town or the old, ruined keep to the northeast. Even so, people find that highly doubtful.

This spacious inn and tavern serves as the public house for the region. Like alehouses everywhere, Wrafton’s Inn offers beer, wine, and, on occasion, spirits. Meals are served for those with the coin, and beds for travelers are available. A crowd of villagers gathers each night to drink, gossip, sing, and play games of chance.

A middle-aged human woman stands behind the bar, she greets the party as they enter the Inn, "Welcome to Wrafton's Inn. I am Salvana Wrafton, the proprietress of the establishment." She looks down at Maria and smiles even more brightly, "I think I have some sweets you can have while your... Guardians and I discuss boring old adult business." The woman disappears under the counter but then reemerges with three yellow Custard tarts, "Here you go my dear." After passing the tarts off, Salvana looks up to Thanos and Broc, "What can I do for you this fine night? A room, perhaps two? Definitely a meal. Some drinks? We have Beer, Wine and... It seemed the cult didn't have much of a presence in town... which meant they probably weren't much of a threat after all. This whole job was starting to look a little bit fishy. Unless of course they were following the 'raise a whole bunch of undead and/or demons outside of town' line of thinking, but that seemed a little too blunt for Shar cultists. Unless they were a fringe group who just paid lip service to Shar while doing things that more mainstream cults would feel was shamefully inefficient...

I will have whatever you have cooking, and some Fire Snout. And a small portion and some water for the little one, in case the tarts do not fill her. We've been on the road for some time.

And how big are your rooms? We have two others joining us.

As the girl woofs down the delicious tarts, she spies an elderly gentleman in a weather-worn outfit sitting alone at one of the tables in the middle of the establishment. He is enjoying a bowl of stew as well as a hunk of cheese (that he greedily picks up and takes large bites of).

A stately man sits at another table, perhaps ten feet from the first. His clothing is much finer, dyed blue. He sits with a stiff back and eats his cheese by cutting pieces off with a knife and using a fork to convey the food from the table to his moth.

A female Elf sits in one of the corners of the room. Her face is emblazoned with a scowl. She nurses a glass of wine. Maria quickly realizes the Elf is discreetly eying the party.

Other guests, farmers mostly, are present. Some sing, others drink. Most look to be having a good time.

The woman nods, "We have three kinds of rooms - cheap, good and great. Judging by your kit, I'd say good suits you best. Each of our good rooms have three beds. Six silver for an adult, three for a child. You say there are five of you? It'll be an extra six silver to rent the third bed in the second room (if you don't rent it, I'll have to leave available for one of these drunk farmers).

Salvana snaps her fingers, two waitresses who are tending to other guests look up, "Five more bowls of pork stew for these two, their kid and their friends." The bar maiden hands the Half-Orc three wooden steins, two filled with Fire Snout Ale and the third with boiled water. "We'll settle up after you finish your meal and have a chance to relax.

The bar is about about three quarters full. Most of the patrons seem to be farmers or townsfolk who are getting an evening meal and having a drink or three. A booth in the far back of the tavern, tucked away in a corner, is open and will have enough room for the whole party.

You walk into the fine establishment and look around. The bar is about about three quarters full. Most of the patrons seem to be farmers or townsfolk who are enjoying an evening meal and having a drink or three. You spot Maria, Broch and Thanos sitting in a booth at the far end of the room.

The owner of the shope, Bairwin Wildarson, hardly has a chance to say "Hello", before Tirel is beseeching him for magical healing. The man fumbles around behind the counter and pulls out two vials filled with a blue liquid, "I have two healing potions, if that is what you are looking for. I hope nothing... Terrible happened to your friend. May I ask how he or she came to be injured?"

That'll do then, thank you Salvana. Broch takes the steins and makes his way to the booth in the far corner. If one of these farmers can pay six silver for a night in a room, I'm an elfin maiden, he mutters under his breath. After fussing with Maria to at least eat some of her potatoes, Broch relaxes in his seat and tucks into his stew. He takes a moment to scrutinize the other patrons, and when Velias arrives, he waves her over to their table.

He pushes a bowl of stew toward Velias, Not much really, we only just got the rooms and sat down. A lot of drunk farmers here. That fancypants is lonely. That vagabond likes cheese. And... "I see. You know I acquired these two potions from a traveler, much like yourself. His name was Velkgodd Suqjem. Strange name, I know. He was a Half-Elf, much like yourself. Part Moon Elf, part Calishiite. He had big bushy silver hair and swarthy purple hued skin. He too fought some Kobolds on while walking the road to town. Been happening a lot lately. Honestly, they have made it a habit to harass travelers on the East Way. And, yes, what was once a minor annoyance has become a very real threat to the commerce of the village. Fewer and fewer travelers come our way these days, and even I have a harder and harder time keeping my shop stocked with the finest goods. I remember a trip I made to distant Vast Swamp, many years ago. The place was literally crawling with kobolds because the people of the area refused to drive them away. I wonder how long before the kobolds grow brave enough to strike the village itself?"

The man trails off for a moment, then continues, "But you probably want to get back to your friends. Normally, these potions are quire pricey - twenty gold a piece - but... I am not without a heart. You can have both for free." He leans in, "Just don't tell anyone, ok? I have a reputation to maintain." He hands Tirel the potions then asks, I, uh, I didn't get your name."

Potion of Cure Light Wounds
Level 1 Uncommon

This potion covers your small cuts and minor bruises in dim silver light, causing them to heal over.

Consumable: Potion 20 gp

Utility Power (Healing) Consumable (Minor Action)

Effect: You drink the potion. If you have a healing surge, you must spend one. Instead of the hit points you would normally regain, you regain 1d8 + 1 hit points. If you are bloodied and don’t have any healing surges, you still regain the hit points. If neither of these things is true, there is no effect.

Would you please bring the lady Ninaran a dark ale? On me. Looking to the others, Broch says, She's a hunter. She may know something about what's going on around here. No harm in asking.

Maria lets the adults talk to Ninaran. There was not much to say to the elf that she wanted to other than what Broc already mentioned. She did however decide to speak to somebody else. There was something nagging in the back of her mind. The Keep. She did not understand fully but something told her that it was important to get more information on the Keep. It was essential. Perhaps it had something to do with the Shadowfell and Shar's relationship with it.

Politely excusing herself from the table and making sure Broc knows that she is going over to Valthrun, she makes her way to the man.

Excuse me sir. May I speak to you about something? I am a scholar and believe it or not a mage who is helping my friends over there,, she says politely to Valthrun, gesturing to her party, ...track down a Cult of Shar rumored to be operating in and around Winterhaven. We were hired by Gevarn to assist Sister Linora in this task. If I remember correctly Shar was responsible for creating the Shadowfell and somehow the Tower located northeast of this town is somehow connected to the Shadowfell in some way. Although I can't remember or not know how. Perhaps you could help me.

The older gentleman sets his fork down and looks down at the little girl, "A scholar you say? Most girls of your age know only of dolls, most are barely literate (same goes for the boys, really, although they prefer wooden swords me thinks). What interest in tomes and knowledge would a child like you have? You have the diction and vocabulary of someone much older than your, what, seven years? Quite pleasant really. Too few of your generation care for knowledge, let alone the active acquisition of it." He takes up his fork and devours a small piece of white cheese. “The keep was built during the height of the Cormyr's golden age, perhaps centuries before the Spellplague befell our fair continent. Some sort of watchtower. I can’t recall what for. Some think it was to guard against gnoll marauders, but I don’t think that’s right. Whatever, the keep outlived its usefulness. It’s been a ruin since before I was born. Probably a goblin lair by this time. But you’ve whetted my curiosity. When I return to my tower, I’ll look through my library. The next time you see me here, I will know more.”

I am actually 9 years old., Maria says with a bit of humbleness. She was not really the show offy type, I love to read and learn. And I find magic fascinating and fun. Besides, it's not who has the power and skills that is important, it is how it is used, regardless of age. Besides adventuring parties last longer with people that use their minds more than they use their muscles or weapons.

For a moment there is a sense of sadness in Maria as she inadvertantly commented something that her father once told her. Shaking it off Maria continues.

I was also wondering, is this town having a kobold problem of late? Salvana sounded like they have been a nuissance here recently. What can you tell me of them?

Dear Lolth this was irritating. All this talk about kobolds and keeps was likely important, but after her frustrations at being unable to dig up any information on the cult or church and the long journey Vellias would much rather be drinking. The problem was her particular type of drinking was not something you did among civil company. Normally she'd just hire a lady or gentleman of the evening to sate her thirst rather than suffering through her fugue or waiting for an isolate victim in the night, but with a young one with them she didn't feel comfortable doing so. Which was bizarre, because she'd done plenty worst in front of her own flesh and blood children. Then again they'd all had drow blood, and drow were born knowing how to lie, cheat, steal, seduce and betray. There wasn't much innocence to ruin there.

"A while. We're meeting company, and until we meet up we can't know for certain how long our stay is. You know how people get when you're at the whim of their hospitality," Vellias interjected.

The party makes their way up to the rooms. They are medium sized, perhaps elven feet long by eight feet wide. Three beds line the left wall for the men's room, while three beds line the right wall for the women's room. A small night stand with a single candle sit between each bed. The beds are fluffy but the pillows flat. It is not the best room you have ever stayed in but definitely not the worst. Sleep finds each of you quickly, especially after the many days sleeping on the cold earth.

Several roosters call out to the rising sun, rousing all from their slumber. Breakfast is a simple affair - smoked trout and watered wine (or apple juice in the case of Maria). Only a handful of guests stayed at the inn, most seem to have devoured their breakfast and dashed out to begin the day. Still she went to bed not long after and it seemed she was the first one up.

He sends a pointed look toward Tirel, Loosening other people's tongues is not exactly one of my strengths... Ah well. I've no doubt we will know more tomorrow.

Shortly thereafter the group retires for the night. Broch sleeps heavily, his body still worn from the encounter with the kobolds. By the time he awakens, everyone else is already up and about. He skips his morning routine to meet the others downstairs. Maria, Tirel, and Velias are at a table, eating breakfast. Thanos is nowhere to be seen. "It still smells like a scam of some kind honestly," Vellias shrugged, somewhat grumpy at having to wear her cloak indoors. Damned morning light coming through the windows... "It could be as simple as scam as exaggerating the danger to get us to come though. I didn't pick up on anything too suspect, so I doubt it's an outright trap either way."

Broc would roll his one good eye if he wasn't so interested in his breakfast. He had to give Vellias a little leeway; she was a drow, and paranoia came easily to them. In fact, from the tales he had heard throughout the mountains, drow don't live long if they haven't developed a robust knack for paranoia. I doubt that too, Vellias, he manages to say.

Maria adds, I don't know about you guys but it seems to me Ninaran last night seemed a bit nosy. Not to mention rude and ungrateful.

Good insight lass. Some folk don't like to be bothered. She may have been trying to shake me off, but she may also have been trying to find out more. It's a small town, and you know how it's been. People don't tend to like seeing an orc and a drow mingling about. Could be that. He finishes his meal and downs the rest of his wine, But don't forget she's an elf. All that time in the trees leaves them with twigs so far up their---, he looks down at Maria, well, let's just say that elves aren't exactly warm and cuddly and leave it at that. Now, who's ready to meet this priestess?

After breakfast, we'll go meet with the priestess.

"Seeing as the average town person around here seems to be as illuminating as an ink stain in the dark it does seem to be the only way we're going to get more information," Vellias agreed. Going in blind was not something she liked to do. But sometimes you just had to take a plunge and trust you were strong enough to deal with any traps that might be sprung.

The party finishes breakfast and heads over to the temple. The town is bustling as it is market day. Many people from the surrounding countryside have come in to hawk their wares. Fresh fruit, fish, vegetables and grain are a plenty, along with small objects, mostly pendants and statuary, made from carved wood. Children run to and fro, excited by the day's hustle and bustle. Donkeys and mules make strange noises, while horses trot about, trying to avoid tramping passers by. Many people walk into and out of the Temple, as it appears to be quite a popular destination in town.

Market days are one of the few days in the week when Sister Linora is actually present in the temple (she prefers to go out into the countryside and help people there). The Temple is dedicated to Chauntea but also includes shrines to several other good-aligned gods such as Shiallia, Mielikki, Silvanus and Ilmater. The tall, stone building towers over all the other buildings on this side of the Inner Gate.

Walking inside, you see services have just ended. Sister Linora is a matronly woman, with long black hair, streaked with grey. Her skin is tanned from all the time she spends meandering across the countryside. Her vestments have been starched and look as fresh as they were the day she puchased them. Beside her is Gevarn, whose vestments are a bit dingier and well worn. After saying good bye to each of the faithful, Gevarn waves the party over. "Hello friends! Thank you for coming. This is Sister Linora, the chief priestess of this temple."

The Sister's voice is regal and commanding, yet as soft as a summer breeze, "I must thank you for saving my friend from the dangers that plague both his quest and the roads. With out you, he surly would have been killed."

The town proves to be busy on market day, and the group is forced to travel through a throng of people moving to and from vendor stands set up all along the way. Broc tries to show his most ingratiating smile at all times, so as not to make the townfolk fearful of a tusked one-eyed half-orc in full plate armor. Vellias generally keeps herself well covered up during the day. As usual, the attractive Tirel and the darling little Maria take some of the edge off their party's appearance.

Once at the temple, the group spots Gevarn alongside a woman they assume to be Sister Linora. They wait while the two finish farewells with some of the faithful. In the meantime, Brochdern walks by the other shrines set up to other of the goodly gods. Chauntea, Shiallia, Ilmater, Silvanus and Mielikki, the goddess that Thanos follows. All were here, to be payed respect to. Brochdern reflects on a time when a shrine to Gruumsh would be seen among this pantheon. We will make it so, he says quietly to himself, and offers up a prayer to the other gods, that they might smile upon him and his quest, in the times that Gruumsh, through his imprisonment, cannot. We only seek to strengthen the host of goodly gods watching over the people of this world, he says, and to right a wrong committed so long ago.

After rejoining the group, Grevarn waves them over and they are introduced to Sister Linora. The Sister's voice is regal and commanding, yet as soft as a summer breeze, "I must thank you for saving my friend from the dangers that plague both his quest and the roads. With out you, he surly would have been killed."

These must be desperate times to send a man out into danger he is ill accustomed to face. Luckily he was under the vigilance of He Who Watches, and we were near enough to lend a hand. I am Brochdern Stormeye, of the Kingdom of Many Arrows.

Across the room Brochdern seems lost in thought for a moment as he walks towards the deities' shrines. It had to be difficult for him being a follower of a deity that the common folk were so hostile towards. He noted to himself that he should learn more of Gruumsh if only to be on equal footing with the Half-Orc.

Just remember Vellias that this seems like a very normal town. Death Cults by nature are not known for their normality. I very much doubt that they would make their presence felt so easily in a town like this. They are more likely to be very discreet. And it was never said that they were actually in the town proper. Maybe in the vicinity of it. I think we should take a closer look at that Keep in the immediate future., Maria said before packing her stuff, including her spellbook which she had been studying while eating.

Once the party headed to the Temple, she noticed the children playing around. She seemed a little distant and longing for a while. Like all children, she needed to be with others her own age. But she knew that she could not. But the longing was there. So she hurried her pace towards the temple as if trying to get this over with and not deal with her emotions.

When they arrive, she waves to Gevarn and says to Sister Linora, I am Maria Fireheart and I am with them. I was wondering, since you are concerned with the Cult of Shar, if you think the Keep to the Northeast of Winterhaven might have something to do with it? I remember reading something about the Shadowfell and that particular Keep being related to it but I cannot remember how or why. Since the Shadowfell is a remodelled version of the Shadow Weave which Shar created, if what I suspect is true then perhaps this Death Cult may be looking into the Keep or even based there,

The Sister pauses as her eyes scan the church for any eavesdroppers, "Mistress of the Night has laid her eyes upon Winterhaven and wishes to turn it into a bastion of her unholy might. Chauntea has spoken to me in my dreams, given me visions of the Disc of Shar looming over the town, casting its fel shadow upon us all... The omen does not bode well for any that live here." She pauses once more as she walks across the hall to ensure the doors have been closed shut, "Anyone could be a cultist. They would not openly say so, obviously. No one will freely admit they worship an evil god and practice the dark ways of such vile religions! You must delve deeper my Champions. The fate of the town rests upon your shoulders."

"But Sister," Gervan asks, "How can these Champions investigate that which the Cultists conceal from them?"

"I do not know... You have asked around with the common-folk, yes? Perhaps... Perhaps Lord Padraig knows more? Sure he has been woefully inept with his handeling of the Kobolds but perhaps the matter of the Cult has not escaped his attention? What of Valthrun, he is old and wise. Eilian speaks for the common people, perhaps he has heard rumblings."

"Any of them could be cultists too! How do we know who to trust Sister?"

"I do not know, my friend... Chauntea was... Less clear as to this matter than I would have preferred."

The woman looks down at Maria and smiles, "Beautiful is the mind of a child. I do not know the specifics either but that keep has been there for centuries. Long since abandoned too. During the times of upheaval, Shar could very well have asserted her control over it but... My vision was clearly centered on the town. That keep lies many miles from here. Perhaps the two are connected, I am not sure.

He spits that name out like it were poisoned mead, "That no good huckster came to town a few years ago with a wagon filled with trash. Literal trash. No sensible person want buy his rusty junk, let alone buy it..." The Dwarf kicks his shop's wall, "Yet the Grande Shop is doing really well for itself. I have appealed to Lord Padraig, but he has neither the resources nor the means to raise a force to fight back. I fear that this is only a harbinger of a disaster to come."

Lord Padraig," Gervan interjects,
"Can be found in the Manor House. Perhaps you can convince him to take the Kobold threat more seriously, as well as the Cultists."

It is strange that Ninarn would not know anything about the Kobolds. She is a hunter by trade, she must have seen them before. Perhaps she worried you were inexperienced adventurers and feared for your safety?"

She is telling the truth as far as you can tell.

Meanwhile, Thanos scouts the Warrior Guild out. You ask around and find out that the Warrior's Guild is the name the townsfolk give to the local militia. They often train on days when the market is not in town.

Bairwin's Grand Shop is a pleasant building. Most of the people who came in from the countryside for the market go into the store but few come out with any items. When you poke around a bit, you hear people comment that he has a nice stock but his wares are perhaps a bit too expensive.

The Lord smiles at the Half-Orc, "A true adventurer I see! Here here, old boy." He unfurls a map of the local area, "Now let's see here. This is Winterhaven," He points to a town symbol in the center of the map. The East Way slithers its way east-to-west, while a second road meanders down from the north. Winterhaven is located at the point where these two roads intersect. "Now," he traces his finger north along the North Road then stops at the symbol of a ruined keep, "That is the old keep that I mentioned." His finger then wanders back down to Winterhaven, then goes directly south, "That is the old Dragon Burial site. I remember Eilian telling me that Douven Staul was headed down there to excavate the area..." He pauses for a moment then continues, "At any rate," his finger travels directly east and stops at a seemingly random spot on the map (far south of the East Way and far south-east of the town), "Here. This is where the kobold lair is." He looks up at the group and smiles even more brightly, "Now you are just the sort of people who could reasonably take these Kobolds out! You may keep anything you find in their lair, as well as one hundred gold coins. Does that seem fair?"

"As for why the villagers don't care, well, that is simple - they do not believe the Kobolds are a large enough threat. I command the Winterhaven Regulars but they only number ten (including their Captain, Rond Kelfem). The militia is much larger, well over fifty souls. The problem is that I can only order the militia to assemble when Winterhaven is directly threatened. They do not believe the Kobolds present a clear danger to the town and so refuse to muster. By tradion, I cannot compel them. So you see I am between a rock and a hard place - the Kobolds are attacking travelers on the road, which makes merchants less likely to come to Witnerhaven. The town will eventually die if we cannot make the roads safe. However, the Kobolds do not harass the outlying settlements enough to rouse the townsfolk into action. It is death by a thousand pinpricks."

He turns to Maria, "If Sister Linora believes there is a threat, then I am willing to hear more. What proof have you that a cult has infiltrated the town and/or has designs on Winterhaven? The thugs could have been after Gevarn for any number of reasons - gambling, offense, debts, etc. If there is no proof, then there is little I can do."

A silvery-white miasma manifests itself atop his shoulders as he plants his feet and slams himself into the Dragonshield nearest him. It was not long on their journey that the group was ambushed by more kobolds. The small lizardmen appeared from nowhere, closing the distance too quickly for Brochdern to react in time. Even as Thanos and Velias spring into action, the kobolds are upon them. Brochdern is immediately assaulted by the warriors, and he does his best to defend himself against their attacks. A couple wings find their mark, and Brochdern lets the battle fury wash over him. He can feel the power of Tirel's healing thoughts take away some of the pain, but his focus is on the enemies before him.

Brochdern can't get his spear to penetrate the trio of shields pressing in on him. He and Tirel try to land a strike but the dragonshields are earnest after their ambush. A couple of arrows whiz by and Thanos manages to drop the kobold before Tirel. Velias vanishes in a cloud of darkness, or was it bats, and engages the priest staying behind. Near as Brochdern can tell anyway, he can't take his eye away from the kobolds in front of him. Predictably, they maneuver to flank him and stab low. He raises a foot to dodge one strike, and parries the other with his spear. Lightning flashes in his eyes. He can't tell if it hurt the kobolds but it certainly distracts them. He makes his move. When the kobold in front of him regains his vision from the bright light, he meets the gaze of Brochdern's Eye of Fury, infecting him with the rage of Gruumsh. Brochdern then shoves off into a spin move away from the kobold behind him and thrusts his spear out to catch it by surprise.

Frustrated at how well the kobolds were blocking his attacks, Tirel sees an opportunity when Brochdern is able to disengage with one of the fiends. They had to close upon the isolated foes while they had the chance. Moving into a more advantageous position he strikes towards the back of the creature with as much might as he can muster. A swirling fog begins to coalesce and shoot forth from his sword, but the attack is batted away along with the grey mist. Exasperated by the resoluteness of the defense, Tirel plants his feet and readies another attack. Hopefully he can at least be a hindrance to the kobold's concentration.

A flash of lightning flies past Tirel as he attempts to follow the kobold circling around Brochdern but he is unable to keep up. In a moment of respite he notices Velias facing off with the lightly armored caster, deftly maneuvering out of the way of an orb of acid while the caster retreats into the concealment of the forest. She seems to be handling her own - and Brochdern seems to be just fine going toe-to-toe with the Dragonshield - so he rushes instead to aid Thanos. He might not fare so well with a bow in the melee. Letting loose a bellowing roar he moves alongside Thanos and brings his sword up for an overhead strike against his opponent.

He manages to get there before the kobold is able to let loose another attack and cleaves through it's defenses. Before the creature even falls to the ground Tirel sets his sights back upon the half-orc's duel.

Bah, they ambushed us. Once that advantage played out, they were finished. I am fine. Lizards do not worry me.

When Maria discovers the symbol of Shar, Brochdern's eyes go wide and he hurries over to confirm, Then Sister Linora's visions are true, the cultists of Shar are about around Winterhaven. And in uncovering them, we can fulfill our contract with Lord Padraig.

So that was the plan then? Slowly take out the kobolds one by one? She liked it, but there were a few flaws... most notably the dragonshield. From their last fight Velias knew that it was going to be impossible to take that thing down in one strike. They could either split up and go around it to try and take out the ones on either side of the main enemy, or they could stick together to ensure whatever they tried to kill died.

Deciding staying together was the better option, Velias silently followed Thanos' lead.

There being quite a number of kobolds in the clearing, Tirel didn't think rushing headlong was exactly the best option. As Thanos and Velias begin to move silently into the nearby thicket, Tirel decides to follow. There was no reason to split up when they were outnumbered and risk getting cut off from each other. Sitting behind the two, he waits for an opportunity to present itself. Hopefully Thanos could get a good shot off.

This is what happened when people who had no business attempting to sneak did so anyway. It was her fault really though. She'd made no explanation that the others should remain behind, and had followed along on a stealth mission she likely should have left to Thanos alone. It was natural the others would get their signals crossed. She was too used to working alone.

Moving to a position that was still in cover but closer to the enemy, Velias attempted to charm the nearby kobold out of their protective position.
