The wind whispers through the small Imperial Firebase, kicking up plumes of sand as the platoon gathers around their Lieutenant. The base is extremely understaffed, with only a company of the Kokhba stationed where there should be a battalion. Positioned on a featureless plane withing support distance of two critical mining operations and a major trade route, the base and it's occupants have seen more than their fare share of combat, with skirmishes frequently breaking out in the region.

Lieutenant Ariel Bezalel's voice rings out amidst the murmur of the platoon. "Alright lads, we've got us another patrol." The platoon groans in surprising unison. "Yeah, yeah, it sucks. But 1st Platoon is already deployed, and 3rd's Conqueror is still out of action. The machine spirit REALLY didn't like that bomb. Anyway, I've got the latest map for the region." She points towards a stack of laminated maps on a small table. "Finally convinced the powers that be to track the engagements we've had, didn't tell us much more than we already knew though. Every squad gets one anyway. Now go stow your damn kit and mount up, we roll in 10. We make for the MSR first." The Lieutenant turns and walks towards her Conqueror Pattern Leman Russ, her crew following in short order.

The other squads make for the small barracks housing your platoon and quickly re-emerge. Moving towards their Chimera's and igniting the engine's and soothing the Machine Spirits under the wary eye of a Mechanicus Detachment.

The other squads maintain a fair distance from yours, making sure to keep their conversations out of earshot of the Commissar and new Sergeant.

Your driver makes for the barracks, mumbling all the while. "Bloody 'ell, now we're unpopular on top of being stuck with more brass than high command. C'mon Fluffy, let's grab some vittles and our hygiene kits for the trip. He turns and shouts at Rose and Haverley. "Make sure you grab your hygiene kits new blood. We don't like smelly people in our Chimedon." Satisfied he turns back and goes into the barracks with Fluffy.

Rose tilted her head; calling his commandng officer new blood wasn't
that much of an issue but shouting it across the base infront of the
whole platoon moments before deployment was a large one.

Corporal Larak!
She did her best impression of a drill seargent, turning his name into the crack of a whip.
She knew eyes would be on her, not staring but beadilly behind hands and fingers.

She knew Jeffrey was an arse and for some reason still had issue with her despite having
been alongside their squad for some time now. Clearly longer than he had realized.

She walked up to him; her voice returning to a normal level and she smiles.

Dont make me remind you he is your Commanding Officer
again, or you shall be the one using a hygene kit to remove your
beloved bumfluff beard.

Haverley grabs one of the maps, staring at it fixedly as if trying to commit it to memory. He's green, you can see that from his age and the way he bounces around with an enthusiasm and energy that hasn't yet been beat out of him over a prolonged campaign. Despite that, he seems utterly at home here. He's already picked up a lot of grime and dust, and he carries his gear with an easy familiarity. He looks like he belongs here. He grins over at Stubble as the man flips him attitude.

"Make sure you get in a shave while you're in there, Larak. If you've lost your hygiene kit already, I'll lead you mine."

He turns to regard the commissar as she reprimands Larak along the same lines, eyeing her with the same kind of wary appraisal that one examines a poisonous viper that doesn't currently seem to be acting aggressive. When she turns to meet his gaze, the guarded expression drops, replaced by a grin. He moves over to her rapidly.

"Commissar McClaud! I'm Sergeant Haverley. It's good to have you on the squad!" He reaches over and grabs her hand between both of his, grasping it in a a vice-like handshake. He meets her gaze with a confidence that seems out of place on such a young soldier. "Let me assure you now, commissar, that this is the easiest assignment you will ever have. I may be newly promoted, but I've heard a lot about these men and women, and they're fine, loyal veterans, every damn one of 'em. They're the finest squad in the whole damned company, and it is my honour to command them. There won't be any noteworthy discipline problems from my soldiers in the field." His emphasis on that last sentence is a little bit off. It's said as a statement of fact, which could be taken to mean that Rose won't experience problems, or alternatively that if she does ever think there's a problem, it will mean that she's mistaken, and shouldn't even bring it up.

He turns to the rest of his team, leading them into the barracks.

"Alright, First Squad. You heard the lieutenant. Get your gear and board the Chimedon, we move out in ten! Now, I think I know all your names. But you never can tell with a fragging greenhorn, can you? So, why don't you all introduce yourselves to me as you get your gear stowed?"

Elias turned for the barracks, giving the Commissar and her victim a wide berth. As he passed out of the Commissar's field of view, he gave Larak a look of "Are you insane?"

Caden fell in beside him as they went to their bunks. The pair cut quite difference. Caden, a few short months off the parade ground, was in full battle gear as per the regs, and smelled like a grox for it. Elias, seasoned campaigner, had made several concessions to it being forty degrees in the shade. Oh, he had his helmet, lasgun, and the ever-faithful flamer on him, but everything not needed for his day-today duties at the firebase was at his bunk. The pistol and gunbelt hung from one of the posts, not being worth its weight to walk around with. The Krak grenades were in the foot locker because there were plenty of cannons to deal with armor well beyond the range they could be thrown. His greaves were under the bunk because the numerous fighting positions dotting the base's perimeter would protect his legs far better than armoplas could ever hope to. At base, they were unnecessary burdens. But riding in the air-conditioned Chimedons, patrolling where the rebel's activity was highest, bulk mattered less than survival. Except for the pistol, which remained useless, but he was not a brave enough soldier to try pressing the issue with the Commissariat.

As he kitted up, Caden observed, "At least he seems self-aware." "It don't matter what he's aware of now," Elias growled. "What matters is if he can keep his situational awareness when it drops in the pot. If he can't, we'll all end up like Sarge." To the best of anybody's knowledge, he had never referred to the squad's new non-com by rank outside the earshot of an officer or Commissar.

Stepping up to the squad's Chimedon, Caden went first. "Caden McKenzie." "Elias Hawke. Assault team. And main gunner."

Rose accepts his hand, but removes it as quickly as respectfully possible after he places a second.
She prefered her hand shakes short and simple, not particularly fond of her hands getting warm and
sweaty.

It seemed no-one had informed the new sergeant she had prior with his new squad and was not fresh
off the boat as he was.

Your predecessor was a good man ... don't assume the job is going to be easy
just because you believe yourself his equal, if that were true he would still be here.
Rose had a soft spot for the previous sergeant and she was also equally warey of new fish,
she smiled attempting to lighten the mood.

Just do what you were taught and don't try and be a hero.

She slides past and climbs into the back of the Chimedon; she takes her usual seat next
to whom-ever she usually sat next to and starts checking over her chainsword and bolt
pistol.

Pyotr moves quickly back to the barracks to grab his gear, trailing Ivanoivic behind him. In hushed tones he turns to his "assistant" Now there's a bloody important lesson for you. If you're going to mouth off, doing it with you buddies, or at least not in public. Rose is a good sort, but because Larak did it where everyone can see she has to give him a decent dressing down at least. Now run along and grab your kit, and don't forget the diagnoster like last time, I'm letting you use it so you can learn to use it, not is it can gather dust under your bunk.

He then stops at his bunk, grabbing his webbing with grenades and extra ammunition, as well as the squads medkit and a few ration packs. Turning to go, he pauses, then grabs the canteen and the glow lamp, muttering last thing you want is to be caught out all night with no water and no light. Damn rebs would love that.

As he enters the Chimedon, he turns to the new Sergeant. Don't worry too much about Larak sir. He took our last Sarge's death pretty hard. Give him a few patrols and a taste of combat and he'll be good as new. The "if you don't frak up" left unspoken. He smiles, and asks can I see that map for a few? Always good to know the terrain, and nothing more worrying than a new CO with a map.

Turning back to the barracks he shouts WHERE ARE YOU PRIVATE KARSTOV? ON THE DOUBLE, LETS GO!
Right here sir, would you like to inspect my kit?
God emperor no, now get in the 'don.

He takes a seat across from Commissar Rose, and whispers Poor boy still thinks he's on the parade ground, and it's far too easy to mess with him. On that note, what's your impression of the new sergeant?

The commissar simply smiles at Pyotr;
but her eyes say; we have yet to see.
Save the gossip for the mess hall, and no
funny business, ... not outside of the Firebase
walls anyhow.

She turns to Ivanoivic: dryly adding.
You got my water in there lad? I hope you know its a every troopers
duty to carry a canteen for the squad commissar... case I get thirsty in
the heat of battle.

Dammit, the kid is fresher than his gear, it's gonna be along ole drive.

Barbarella gave it a moment as her thought left her silent amongst the squad. She looked around, catching eye contact several members of other squads. She shook her head slightly, watching their smiles and mock signs of enthusiasm.

Teo
Sir

Without thought, Barbarella had slapped Private Malakai Teodor on the back of the head, his helmet and her gloves absorbing enough energy that his head gently rocked forward

How many times, Teo, I ain't an officer, lose the sir. Did you already load my tube?
Yes si...Barbarella, your launcher and three rounds frag are already in the back.
Excellent, we'll make a soldier out of you yet. Let's go get the rest of our toys.

Approaching the Rebel's Hell and their new Sergeant with their recently fetched packs, Barbarella brought herself to a halt. She saluted with the energy expected from a pair of senior officers greeting each other, just enough effort to convey the meaning of the sign without attempting to sprain muscles in her arm or knock herself out.

Private Barbarella Wintre, heavy weapons operator and forward gunner, sir. You need something recently deceased and scattered over a wide area, I'm the person to call.

Malakai appeared beside her, his halt and attention covering his newly cleaned boots in a layer of dust and sand. He ignored it, saluting with an enthusiasm present only in those whose biggest foe was still the drill instructor.

"Private Malakai Teodor, heavy weapons loader, Sir.
Unless there is anything else, sir, we'll get embarked.

Giving Sergeant Haverly a fair chance to respond, Barbarella broke off, inserting herself into the forward section of the Chimedon with her backpack, somehow cramming it all into a space which looked barely big enough for her. Following her lead, Malakai climbed into the back of the transport, positioning himself under the missile launcher strapped to the side of the wall.

Haverley blinks in surprise at the Commissars reply, momentarily thrown for a loop by her response to his challenge. He’d heard that she was strict, which he’d taken to mean that his squad would be balanced on a knife’s edge- or more accurately, against a bolt pistol’s barrel- but it looks like her priorities aren't what he would've assumed. Suddenly, he’s not sure how to handle her any more. He frowns as she moves away, but then banishes the momentary expression of doubt as the squad files in.

“Hawke. Good to know you. You’re main gunner? Yeah, I’m not going to be switching that up any.”

He slaps the weapons specialist on the shoulder as the man moves past him towards the turret, and turns to Pyotr.

Haverley nods to Pyotr as the man quietly reassures him. "Larak doesn't worry me any. Nunyer do. I didn't know your last sergeant. But from the way his squad moves itself, I like 'im already.” He grins at the comment about the map, and then passes it over. “Course you can, trooper. Remind me, do you hold the map so the ‘N’ on the compass is at the bottom, or the top?” he asks in a deadpan voice, as he hands it to Pyotr upside down.

He greets Barbarella in much the same way as the others. "I’ve heard that about the two of you, Wintre, Teodor. Good to have you both on the squad. Always nice to have a tread feather to hand.”

He glances over and shakes his head at Stubble, still grinning. “Thrones, corporal, you need a better razor, or a new face, or both. Alright, in you get. So long as you can still reach the steering wheel through the beard.”

Last of all is Trooper Jaiz Zimm, trailing behind the rest of the squad. He’s still packing gear in his backpack as he meanders towards the transport, and glances up with an insolent ‘so what’ sort of expression.

“Sorry I’m late, Sarge. Had to shake hands with a one eyed man, know what I mean?” he drawls.

Haverley is impassive, but 'there's always one' is written all over his face. "That's a relief. I thought you'd pussied out on me, private. Come on, nothing to worry about. It's only a patrol." He reaches out and grabs the younger man’s arm, making a show of supporting him into the transport.

Zimm scowls, but is unable to think of a retort particularly quickly, steeled as he was for a fight and not banter. He’s even younger than Sergeant Haverley, but slightly less green, having joined the squad shortly before the last sergeant died. Zimm’s a hiver punk through and through, but he had a grudging respect for the former squad leader- a respect which clearly hasn't transferred to a replacement barely older than he is.

Once the last guardsman has embarked and stowed their gear, Haverley turns to the assembled. "Alright, first squad. Anyone need to hit the head before we set off? Long drive ahead, kids. No? Take us out when ready, corporal."

A small figure approaches the APC in a speedy hustle. For the observant this will not be the first view of the robed individual. His hunched body was seen scurrying about the briefing area and once they were ordered to move out, he would have been seen trying to keep formation much like a goose amongst swans.

Sigismung was not new to the platoon life, but greatly unaccustomed to it. Taking 1 step for every 3 the Tech priest took was the pale hulking machine-man Simon. At first it seemed heavily modified, but closer observation would reveal it was overloaded with baggage, more specifically Sigismund's ill packed gear.

"Be quick Simon, your lateness is an embarrassment!"

"Affrimativvvve"

The Enginseer almost runs past the Chimedon. "Ahh yes, your excitement reverberates in my auditory receptors." His frail hand strokes the armour affectionately.

He then rips his hand from the tank and gives a brief look around and only then notices the crew inside the tank.

He gives a very awkward salute that changes facing every 3 secs as though failing to find it's target.

"This one is Tech-Priest Sigismund ready able and fully functional. Speak and I will whisper your command to the Minitorium Beast. I also possess the ability to make our weapons spit harder at our foes and our explosive embrace fuller."

He then pauses for a second optical eye bouncing around to see who is listening, flicking away when he sees the Commissar. "But I dont do that..."

He proceeds to push the Servitor into the carriage, leaving Simon at the door and takes a seat, Sigismund's massive and almost over encumbering Manipulator Mechadendrite clamping on to secure him.

Pyotr looks blankly at the sergeant for a fraction of a second, as if trying not to choke, then breaks into a slight smile. I think we might do well enough sir. Now lets try not to meet in a professional capacity for at least a while yet, shall we? He then pauses for a moment to examine the map, plainly trying to remember as much detail as possible.

Once he and Ivan are seated in the Chimedon, he turns to Barbarella. What's your guess for this one, dead quiet or contact every couple of clicks?

Checking through his medkit one last he time, he slaps the drivers compartment and says Good to go on my end.

Deciding to roll intelligence to see how much of the detail of the map I can memorize, or if I can discern any real pattern. Probably unnecessary, but it can't hurt, and I feel it fits Pyotr's idea of over-preparation. No clue what the target number should be.

"I like a man who can laugh at himself," Caden observed. "Yeah. Kills me," said an unimpressed Hawke, unslinging his pack and pressing it into Caden's arms. Caden dutifully set about stashing both troopers's surplus kit while Elias negotiated his way through the troop compartment.

Hearing Pyotor's comment as he passed, he said, "It's been what? A week since the last one? We're about due. Hawke had put down for 9 days in platoon pool, but he was not going to mention that with Rose sitting in his bad breath zone. She was chill, as far as Commies went, but Larak had just demonstrated there was nothing to gain by needlessly antagonizing a grox, no matter how docile.

"I figure that's about how long it takes the Emperorless scum to forget how bad we trounced 'em last time." Elias chuckled, then resumed his advance on the Chimedon's fighting compartment. He climbed up into the turret, and began the supplications to Conqueror cannon and the assorted mechanisms that supported it.

Rose shrugs as she considers answering the question posed
to the squad; disguising it as rolling her shoulders when she
realizes its probably best not to answer.

Last time they went out they came back one man short;
but mentioning that couldnt do anyone any good.

How about we get this play-kart going before these boys and

I'm going with contacts, but you know I'm an optimist like that. Barbarella responded, facing Pyotr with a smile while instinctively checking the forward guns systems for readiness. Rose's chainsword bangs coincided nearly perfectly with the illumination of two slight pale lights from the weapons 'ready' and 'safe' readouts.

Ready to roll, although I'll still want to test this thing when we clear the compound. TP's said they fixed it, but I want sure after last time. No reason Mr Hawke up there should have all the fun again.

As everyone stows the last of their stuff on the Chimedon and Larak turns on the engine muttering the suitable ignition prayers the Lieutenants voice comes through the platoon's vox channel. "Alright first squad, you were last in so you get to be first out, Diamond formation on the Conqueror, 1st is on point, 2nd takes the right, third takes the left, and fourth is the rear. Let's do this patrol properly. Oh and first squad, if you stick someone out the top to spot, remember to give them goggles, sand getting in your eyes is a damn stupid reason to have to stop for a medic, right third squad?" You hear an embarrassed affirmative over the vox. Larak lets out a chuckle as he gives it a little gas and the Chimedon lurches forward and heads out the Fire Base gates. In the personnel compartment Solomon pipes up. "So who's going up first? The goggles on are that hook next to the turret hatch."

SlyJohnny
2015-01-07, 05:59 PM
Haverley glances up at the hatch and over at the goggles, but doesn't appear to be too eager to stick his head into the sandstorm "I'll stick my head up top if I need to see, but for now, let's put our sharpest pair of eyes up on that pintle gun?"

He glances to where Barbarella huddles behind the sights of the hull-mounted heavy bolter. "That'd be you, Wintre. Let the cog head on that heavy bolter. You rated on vehicle weapons, Sigi?" He scoops up the goggles and hands them over to her.

Even though Sigismund has cybernetic senses and Barbarella has a slightly better BS, My logic is that Sigismund and his Ocular Sight bonus will do well on the heavy bolter, and Barbarella's the only one with (a) Awareness, and (b) a half decent Perception score, so it makes sense to switch it around and have her up top.

Aww, Sarge, here was me thinking you were going to ride with the wind in your hair! Barbarella joked while she maneuvered through the tank, apparently running into (or stepping on) as many people as possible. Changing her voice to do a bad impression of some Lieutenant, Sergeant or Commissar long since departed, she continued You are mouse, when you should be man!, her mocking entirely clear of any malice. Restowing her gear in the turret with the same magical abilities as up front, she untangled a shemegh from the side of her pack, wrapping it around her nose and mouth before placing the goggles on, re-strapping her helmet to hold everything in place and activating her microbead.

Top gun comms check, confirm. Sig, that front bolter suffers no fools trigger side, think you can handle it?

Merrill frowns heavily at the techpriest's observation.

"Good work, Sigismund." he says, leaning into the drivers cabin and reaching forward over Stubble's seat to tap the "transmit" rune on the chimedon's vox-caster.

"Command tank, this is Haverley aboard the Rebel's Hell. My tech-priest has spotted signs of light vehicle tracks along our route. Lots of 'em. Please confirm there are no friendlies operating in our AO?"

Pyotr frowns darkly when Merrill orders Barbella up the hatch. Frakking greenhorn doesn't want to stick his head out of the hatch? That bodes well, by the Throne. Seeing the Commissar's smile, he pauses. Maybe he actually know the squad, and that Barb's the only one with decent eyes? Pyotr settles back into his seat fractionally, resolved to try and hold back judgement till he saw the man in combat.

Sigismund, how deep were the tracks? Any guess how long ago? Sergeant, I think we should try to take a closer look. I'd hate to run into whatever the reb's are using for armor without warning. Standing up and walking to top gunner hatch, he slaps Barbella's leg and shouts How much wind is there up there? Enough to mess with tracks?

The enginseer turns his head slightly to the commissar, only the side of his hood showing and the lights of his occular implants shining form under the shadowed face.

Rose looks at the Enginseer confused, on their last patrol Rose had been forced to assume command due to their sergeants demise... Did he for some reason believe her to still be the acting CO?

You too shy to tell your new sergeant your skill set wothout using the commissariat as a medium trooper?

Enginseers were generally not seen as comrades by the guard, usually as annoying requirements with no sense of humour... But it payed to try and keep a tight squad, even if some bolt bags took trooper as an insult it reminded the rest of the squad they were all on the same team.

And if you call me Roseline ever again this squad will need another replacement!

"Stow the chatter back there. Keep alert. Maybe a contact soon." Haverley says, slightly distracted by the vox-caster and not hearing the specifics of the argument.

While he waits for the lieutenant to reply to his vox-message, he examines the terrain they're in from what he can see near the drivers seat, considering the wisdom of getting out to examine the tracks and thus halting the column (or possibly just his own chimedon and requesting that another squad replace them on point). How far out are they from the firebase now? Is this a suitable site for an ambush? He turns towards Rose, and crooks his head, motioning her over to him.

"Commissar McClaud, you know this AO and these rebels better than me, whatcher make of all this? If we halt the column, will they hit us? Is that what they want?"

Command: Inspire [roll0] vs 71 , mostly targeted on Rose but also on all the occupants of the tank because why not.

Stubble cackles. "Yeah this is the road, only really exists on paper though, this stretch of the desert is hard and flat enough that you can roll anything from Baneblades to autocabs on it fine. Excellent ground to practice maneuvering in formation."

The Lieutenant's voice crackles in on the vox. "Column halt! First squad confirm just light vehicles? Any friendly convoys should have at least PDF Chimera escorts. See if you can't figure out which way they were headed too."

"Yes sir. First squad is halting to disembark and examine vehicle tracks. Stand by." Haverley replies on the vox. He turns to the others, his puppy-like enthusiasm showing through in the way he relays the instructions.

"Awright, Sigismund, Elias, show us what you know. Examine the tracks to determine vehicle type and probable heading. Everyone else, stay on them, keep them covered."

Haverley doesn't give specific orders about who should cover from the vehicle guns and who should move out with Elias and the tech-priest, leaving it to the initiative of each individual. He's curious to see who favours the guns, who's eager to stretch their legs and who would rather hang back in the carrier. Personnel reports only tell so much, when they're detailed at all.

Command: Inspire [roll0] vs 71, on everyone. If successful, +10 to your next rolls. Anyone who hasn't rolled since the previous Inspire attempt still has the +10 waiting, regardless of whether I succeed now.

In a voice low enough to avoid being picked up by his microbead, Elias hissed to Pyotr, "I'm trying to see what he'll come up with on his own without being led by the nose."

In his normal voice, he said, "As soon as Barb gets out of the way." With a practiced ease, he collected his lasgun from the corner of the turret and waited for the gunner to vacate the cupola so he could get out. He then sort of skipped down the Rebel's Hell's glacis plate, making sure not to let bare skin come in contact with it-in the desert sun, armor plate got hot enough to fry whatever sad substitute the munitorum passed off as eggs. Then he went and squatted by the tracks.

So low he practically has to lip read, Pyotr says to Elias Well that's the difference between us. Lets hash it out over a drink back at base, okay?

Visibly switching modes of thought, Pyotr sits up straight. Yes sir. Covering the specialist. Follow me and grab the diagnoster private. We won't need it, but...

Pyotr heads for the rear assault hatch, and pops it open. Waiting for half a second so as to avoid catching a round from a jumpy sniper remember the lessons you heard from the Tranch War vets... No need to be an object lesson myself... He pops out and quickly into position to best cover Elias as he examines the tracks.

Rose doesn't particularly like the whole lets leave it to the troopers approach, they arn't here to
think about the ins-and-outs and not specifically stating for someone to replace the gunner on the heavy
bolter would most likely lead to no one replacing them.

She also notices the men don't look particularly inspired by the sergeants little speech and attempts
to finish what he intended.

"And for Emperors sake someone replace the gunner, and don't walk over the tracks as you spread out to set a perimiter!"

Command: Inspire [roll0] vs 55, on everyone. If successful, +10 to your next rolls.

Well; what can be expected... first potential combat with new CO and hes leaving them to make their
own decisions.

Rose steps out as soon as it is her turn to disembark, her greatcoat is a sandy brown and so only her
understated red berret and sash particularly stand out from the overarching brown of the terrain.

She rests her hands on her weapons, seemingly doing it to look casually unphased by the situation but
is actually readying an action to draw them. She has heard stories of desert worlds before of creatures
that roam under the dunes like sarachorcas1 under open water and she never did like open
water.

She doesn't take up a position but instead loiters with intention near the tracks, waiting for the sergeant
and engineseer to make their decisions as to how to proceed.

Jumping top, maintaining cover Barbarella notes as years of experience demonstrate themselves, Barbarella pulling herself out of the top of the tank using one hand and both feet, simultaneously keeping her other hand guarding the trigger and her eyes keeping watch. It's not an ideal position, and she wastes no time in putting herself back in the tank the moment Elias is clear and sliding down the hull. She scans the horizon, wheeling the primed Bolter round the frictionless mount as she goes while ignoring the sweat accumulating on her head, the motion of the vehicle no longer exerting it's somewhat cooling effect.

Meanwhile, Malakai pops out of his seat and takes a covering position around half way up the side of the tank, kneeling on the hot sand with gun up and examining the rolling desert before him. Training alone had guided him to this position, while training and loyalty both continued to make him hold position as be began to become aware of the rapidly rising temperature of his right leg.

Making an Awareness roll, not for any particular reason, more a fluffy 'keeping watch' roll. Never know, might spot something :D

Finally, he set his bead to the platoon channel. "Corporal Hawke from 1st squad reporting. There's no sign of tracked vehicles, say again, negative for heavy armor. The tracks are inconsistent with a Tauros too, so at worst it's technicals. At least four vehicles moved north along the supply route within the past day." He wondered if there were any convoys due south today.

Forgoing the microbead, a shout calls down from the turret, loud enough to be heard clearly over the rumbling engine of the tanks

Malakai, what did I tell you about separating from the launcher?
You said...
...the launcher is either in my hands or within your reach. This ain't a sightseeing opportunity, and it certainly ain't a comfort break, now get back in the tin!

As Malakai walked back into the rear of the vehicle, Barbarella went back to using the comms equipment, talking with the rest of the squad.

8 technicals, certainly sounds like a raiding party, one we should be able to easily deal with. Does that mean... Barbarella briefly paused for a quick look around, before continuing, a mix of anticipation and excitement permeating her voice ...we get to go hunting?

He confirmed the LT's orders with a simple "Roger," as he stood and hustled back to the track. It was already open, so he took the back door into the troop compartment rather than the somewhat more athletic route of climbing onto the IFV. As he settled back into the gunner's seat, he patted the cannon's breech affectionately. "Hear that? We are going to bag us some heretic today.

Haverley is relatively quiet and subdued as the squad returns to the IFV and sets off in pursuit of the rebels. He responds to questions and breaks up any minor squabbles, but otherwise seems deep in thought.

He does take the time to painstakingly explain to the experienced soldiers around him that they are in a potential combat zone and should all keep alert. He occasionally asks Barb or Hawke if they've seen anything, just to check that they're still awake. It's a little annoying, but it helps to keep the gunners and the driver from zoning out.

In between Haverly's check-ups, Elias turned off his bead, and nudged Barb's leg. "Hey!" he hollered up, fairly confident of privacy because without the bead transmitting into the vehicle's intercomm because AFVs moving at speed were not exactly known for beign quiet, inside or out. "If freshmeat doesn't have his ass up in the cupola by the time we make contact, screw the chain of command and just feed me targets, alright?" Targeting auspexes were not exactly famed for their broad fields of view, so vehicle gunners traditionally relied on their commanders and their superior vision to point out targets and give them range bearing cues so they knew where to look. But the current commander was riding in the troop compartment with an even worse view.

Smaller autocars with cargo beds in the back and larger vehicles with large canvas covers over their rear section. As you get even nearer the size of the convoy becomes visible, 15 vehicles, 5 of the smaller make and 10 of the larger. The roaring noise of the Chimedon's engine is then eclipsed by a thundering voice, the Lieutenants, apparently the Laudhailer is working. Even those inside the Chimedon can hear clearly through the armor, and loudly enough to cause most everyone to grimace and cover their ears. "This is Lieutenant Bezalel of the 1063rd Hatikvah Motorized, you are ordered to shut down your engines and disembark your vehicles. Failure to do so will be seen as a hostile action." The response is almost immediate, the vehicles start to scatter off into different directions accelerating hard, and several firearms extend from the cabs of the vehicles or the canvas coverings and start firing towards the Imperial forces. "TAKE THEM DOWN BOYS" the Lieutenants voice roars across the desert. Then the vox opens up. "All units are free to fire, disable those vehicles, Squads 2 through 4 pursue the fleeing targets, 1st squad, you're on mop up duty. Hang back see if you can't find a live one after we kill their wheels, I want a prisoner."

The rest of the platoon opens up with their cannon, only 4th squads Chimedon makes a hit however, and while it punches through the canvas of the larger vehicles, the detonation doesn't disable the vehicle, though the desert immediately around it gets a red paint job and the small arms fire from behind the canvas covers ceases utterly.
