View Full Version : How to download entire thread as text file?

I would like to keep a copy of my rp's old OOC thread for posterity and future reference before it gets deleted, but manually saving each of the 50 pages is tedious and the 'Show as Printable' format doesn't allow for viewing spoilers.

Is there a way to render the entire thread into a nice downloadable text file like the option we have in PMs?

I'm not sure how one would do that, but you can go into settings and change the number of posts displayed on each page. It gives you less pages to save, at least. I seem to recall that Rawhide has, in the past, asked that you reset it to forum default after, due to server load, though this is a vague memory and could also be outdated.

Top of the page, Thread Tools -> Show Printable Version. You can then save that page (File -> Save As... should work on most, if not all, browsers), or do a copy/paste from that page into a Word or other document.

in principle it would probably be just a matter a few hours to whip up a javascript thing to fetch every page of a multipage thread, extract the posts, and append them to the post container of the first page. don't have the time now, but possibly later in the week? (if I still remember)

If someone finds a way to do this that would be great. There's a homebrew I've been wanting to download, but only having mobile access makes this tedious at best.

You can use the search engine friendly archive. It shows everything in a search engine friendly format, which means that things such as links and images to links are shown as the URL in plain text, the contents of spoiler boxes are also shown without being hidden. It also shows many more posts per page than normal.

To get to the search engine friendly archive page for a thread, use the following format:

http://www.giantitp.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-<thread_number>.html

The thread number can be located here in the URL of a thread:

http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?<thread_number>-<name-of-thread>

e.g. The URL for this thread is: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?391822-How-to-download-entire-thread-as-text-file, meaning that the thread number is 391822, and the archive URL would be http://www.giantitp.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-391822.html
