Um doesnt this feat only work if you are a paladin ranger? Or is that only the first and third paragraph? the second lacks mentioning classes

if you can qualify without being a paladin or a ranger, the feat still works and does as much as possible.

A Druid/Paladin could take the Track feat and use their special mount as their animal companion.

can anyone mix their special mount/animal companion with it or just those too?

Just those with special mount and animal companion as class features. You wouldn't get that benefit if you used Wild Cohort (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) to get your animal companion, for instance.

Except Druids and Paladins have contradicting alignment requirements.

The generally optimized way is to go Paladin 5, Beast Master 1 + Devoted Tracker for the qualifications, iirc.

Not al of those actually get a 'special mount' though. Most of them get some sort of mount, and these are special in the sense that they are 'not ordinary' but the're not called 'special mount' so depending on the DM, devoted tracker might not work for them. Those that do get the special mount class feature, don't get 'smite evil' which is a prereq. for devoted tracker. Again they get some sort of smite (eg. smite law), but it's not 'smite evil' so RAW you don't qualify.

I think the above is why eliminating the Druid's alignment requirements (through eliminating Druid altogether) is the preferred method.
